Taylor’s Sparks Reflective Dialogue through “Table Talk”

SUBANG JAYA: Taylor’s has revealed its yearly Chinese New Year festive film. Staying true to its tradition of presenting insightful content that prompts reflection on different aspects of society, the film, titled 'Table Talk,' features typical Chinese New Year conversations with varying perspectives. It shines a spotlight on disagreements amidst the celebration, adding depth to the festive narrative.

Within Malaysia's diverse cultures, including the Chinese culture, various topics ignite discussions without a straightforward populist stance. Common conversations on schooling, career opportunities and marriage frequently delve into nuanced and multifaceted issues. The contrasting perspectives between the younger and older generations underscore the depth and complexity of societal viewpoints, reflecting the dynamic nature of cultural discourse in Malaysia.

The film opens with a poignant table conversation in the kitchen as an aunt and niece prepare dumplings. The aunt advocates for sending the child to a Chinese school, citing the advantages of learning Mandarin and in a Chinese school setting. In contrast, the niece leans towards a mainstream school for greater community diversity. The niece believes it's crucial for her son to interact with various communities, but the aunt counters, pointing out that even Malays and Indians now choose Chinese schools.

The choice between sending children to mainstream schools and vernacular schools sparks diverse conversations and considerations among Malaysian families.

Such conversations extend beyond the Chinese community. As noted by former Education Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Jidin back in 2020, there has been a surge in Malay students’ enrolment in Chinese vernacular schools, reaching 33% in 2020 from 9.5% a decade ago. This data suggests a trend of choosing Chinese schools, but it also shows that some parents still favour national (Kebangsaan) schools. The kitchen conversation, symbolic of broader educational discussions, mirrors a dynamic landscape where diverse school choices reflect the evolving preferences of Malaysian parents.

In another conversation between an uncle and his nephew, the uncle questions why the nephew chose to return to Malaysia rather than pursue better opportunities abroad. The nephew responds by expressing concern about the impact of everyone leaving for work overseas, emphasising the importance of people staying to contribute to Malaysia’s development.

Interestingly, a 2022 report from Kuala Lumpur-based independent think tank EMIR Research sheds light on the scale of this phenomenon. Approximately two million Malaysians currently reside overseas, with around half a million of them being individuals above 25 years old, a demographic more likely to be employed. The report ignited a debate about Malaysia’s brain drain situation – an issue characterised by the departure of skilled and talented individuals from the country.

The film highlights a conversation about Malaysia’s brain drain situation - an issue characterised by the departure of skilled and talented individuals from the country.

Another poignant exchange between two cousins delved into the timeless topic of marriage. The elder cousin, noting the younger cousin’s age, inquired about her plans for marriage. The younger cousin, resolute in her career focus, expressed no immediate intention to marry. The elder cousin countered, suggesting concerns about future care in old age, traditionally associated with children. The younger cousin firmly asserted that having children solely for caregiving expectations is not ethically justified.

The discussion escalated as the elder cousin conveyed the aspirations of the younger cousin’s mother regarding having grandchildren, and the younger cousin challenged the prioritisation of personal dreams. This discourse encapsulates a broader societal debate on the expectations imposed on women regarding marriage and motherhood, an ongoing and deeply rooted conversation that spans decades.

Recent controversial comments from an opposition member of parliament and compelling 2010 Census data, revealing a staggering 4.8 million unmarried women aged 30 and above, highlight financial concerns as the predominant factor influencing 56% of those choosing not to marry. Additionally, 18.5% cited difficulties in finding suitable partners, while 9.4% opted to remain unmarried due to career considerations. These figures vividly depict the multifaceted challenges women navigate within societal expectations, calling for nuanced discussions and understanding.

This scene discusses a societal debate on the expectations imposed on women regarding marriage and motherhood, an ongoing and deeply rooted conversation that spans decades.

In the midst of these persistent conversations across diverse cultures, the film seeks to underscore the idea that there’s no universally correct opinion on certain topics. Decisions are intricate, shaped by numerous factors, rendering them neither unequivocally right nor wrong. The film compellingly showcases the art of participating in respectful conversations, championing an “agree to disagree” mindset, and fostering a culture that encourages exploring and understanding the other side of the coin.

“The film embodies a celebration of diverse dialogue — the capacity to converse, debate, and dissent signifies the vitality of our society. Despite our differences, the film beckons viewers to acknowledge that common ground is always within reach. It calls for the embrace of varied perspectives, fostering conversations that cultivate unity and understanding. Rooted in Taylor’sphere philosophy, the film showcases our commitment to nurturing students’ intellect, creativity, and practical wisdom through purposeful learning,“ shared Ben Foo, Taylor’s Group Chief Marketing Officer.

At its core, the narrative unfolds with the brilliance of open communication, robust debate, and respectful idea exchange, making this cinematic journey a captivating exploration of education’s transformative power, Foo further explained.

The film showcases the art of participating in respectful conversations, championing an “agree to disagree” mindset, and fostering a culture that encourages exploring and understanding the other side of the coin.

Bathroom expert: Know your toilet-to-be

THE toilet, undisputedly one of humankind’s greatest inventions, is of immense convenience to our lives. In choosing a good toilet, consumers need to know a few things.

Self-proclaimed “bathroom expert” Jamban Kin Sdn Bhd director Wong Foo Ei lists down the basic qualities of a good toilet.

- Durability, quality: “High-quality toilets are typically made of high-temperature ceramics, a sturdy and durable material that is not easily worn,” says Wong. “This means you don’t have to frequently replace toilets, as they can maintain good condition for a long time, reducing the frequency of repairs and replacements, saving you time and money.”

- Hygienic convenience: Wong adds that toilet surfaces are usually treated specially, smooth and resistant to dirt. “This makes cleaning easier, allowing you to maintain hygiene more quickly and reducing the hassle during the cleaning process.”

- Multi-functional design: Some toilet designs can adapt to different usage needs, accommodating both squatting and sitting positions. Wong points out that such versatility allows users to choose based on their preferences and cultural habits, enhancing comfort and flexibility in choice.

- Reduced leakage risk: The compact design of integrated toilets reduces connecting components, lowering the risk of leaks. “This design not only enhances product reliability but also reduces the trouble and cost of maintenance,” says Wong.

He adds that quality toilets not only ensure quality but also accommodates user comfort and practicality. “By providing durability, easy cleaning and flexible design, they bring convenience and comfort to our daily lives, allowing us to focus more on other meaningful things in life.”

ZUS COO credits HELP University with his success

KUALA LUMPUR: Sometimes one comes across individuals who are entrepreneurial in spirit and are willing to take the plunge into a new business or activity that they’re passionate about. It’s even more difficult when one is a student studying full time at university, having to juggle studies, social life, and yet find time to launch a business, and make it a success.

Meet one of HELP University’s successful alumni Venon Tian, who embraced the resilience required to be a successful entrepreneur and Chief Operating Officer of ZUS COFFEE. Like many, he felt the weight of parental and peer expectations pushing toward studying for a law degree at HELP University. However, Tian took the plunge despite his true passion lying in the realm of entrepreneurship. But Tian’s story is not just about conformity; it's about the resilience to follow his own path.

While reflecting on his time at HELP University, Tian warmly recalls how the support of his lecturers helped him transition from pre- medical studies to Law. These college years, though challenging academically, became the best days of his life.

While studying, Tian ventured into the world of e-commerce, selling laptop skins and stickers on eBay. The passion for entrepreneurship did not stop, leading him to start a laundry chain 2 years after being in the corporate sector. He used the profits to create EPIZOD, a laundry locker business in 2017.

Tian’s journey took another turn when he joined ZUS COFFEE, a move that would eventually make him its Chief Operating Officer. Navigating through the challenges of a global pandemic and two lockdowns, his coffee chain not only survived but thrived, creating thousands of jobs and becoming a prominent coffee chain in Malaysia.

But Tian is not content with just success; he sees it as a checkpoint in the business' growth. The evolving landscape of home-brew cafés inspired him to focus on the mass consumer market, envisioning his coffee chain to be the biggest in South East Asia.

In his eyes, your current academic pursuit doesn’t dictate your future. “It does not matter what you are studying right now,“ he advises. “The journey toward a degree doesn't have to define your career.”

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Tian emphasises the importance of diversifying skills, understanding different perspectives, and debunking the myth that success requires a specific formula.

In the world of Tian, being open to change, embracing diversity, and following your passions are the keys to creating a future beyond the confines of societal expectations and academic choices.

Astro: Live Sports key to growth for F&B outlets

EATING out in restaurants and watching TV dominate the lives of Malaysians, with 95% of them eating out weekly and watching TV while dining-in.

Of interest to food and beverage (F&B) outlet owners, customers stay much longer during peak sports season; up to 86% of customers in bar, bistro and pub give their full attention to live sports and stay twice as long – up to four hours, while in Indian Muslim and Indian restaurants, up to 77% of customers are glued to live sports and stay twice as long, up to two hours.

This insight is revealed by Kantar, “a global leader in data, insights, and consulting services” in its survey “Malaysian Consumer Behaviour on Out of Home Consumption & Opportunities”, which provides valuable perspectives on consumer behaviour and market trends.

Astro chief sales and marketing officer Tai Kam Leong said the insight from Kantar affirms that F&B outlets with Astro’s entertainment service can boost business revenue and profitability, as more customers stay longer while dining in.

“Sports contents are successful in capturing consumers’ attention the most. Key sporting events like Liga Malaysia, World Cup and Premier League help in increasing not only footfalls from new customers but also repeat visits and more time spent at the outlet.

“With these insights, Astro introduced the new BIZone pack for F&B outlets to further enhance and simplify its offering. With BIZone, all F&B outlets can offer 100% legal, high-quality and full range of live sports coverage to their patrons.”

The new pack, said Tai, offers significantly more value in terms of content for all F&B outlets, at an attractive entry price point, depending on different types of businesses and seating capacity. To further facilitate ease of doing business, BIZone’s contract period has been halved to 12 months, from 24 months in previous packages.

With BIZone, all F&B outlets, including the small and mid-sized ones, can leverage Astro’s full live sports coverage to take their business growth to the next level.

“The all-new, game-changing single pack for the F&B sector BIZone, aims to empower F&B businesses with a diverse range of entertainment options including a full suite of live sports coverage. The new pack boasts 15 sports channels, 25 non-sports channels, eight free-to-air channels and offers fair and transparent pricing depending on different types of business and seating capacity,” said Tai.

The same survey by Kantar also indicated that when the football league is in season, table with patrons in bars and pubs increased by 50% while for non-bars & F&B outlets, the impact is even greater at 58%.

Kantar Malaysia country head insights division general manager Paromeeta Mathur Banerjee said: “Kantar’s survey shows that entertainment, especially live sports, can be considered as one of the key offerings by any F&B outlets, as it is what customers want the most.

“F&B outlets that provide Astro entertainment have a high reach, especially in the Klang Valley with an estimated unique customer reach of over 4.2 million. Live sports further amplify the impact and reach of F&B outlets in attracting customers and drawing them in to stay longer during each visit.”

In conjunction with the introduction of BIZone, Astro on Jan 10 organised an industry talk “Beyond the Menu: Score with More Customers in 2024” for its F&B clients. The session brought together panelists sharing their insights on market trends and strategic approaches that drive success for F&B businesses.

The panel included Tai, Paromeetha, Astro Malaysia customer experience & digital director Cynthia Seow and industry experts such as Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (Presma) president and Restoran Ali Maju Sdn Bhd founder Datuk Jawahar Ali, Persatuan Pengusaha Restoran India (Primas) president J. Govindasamy @ Suresh.

F&B outlets that sign up for BIZone will stand a chance to be selected to host a Watch Party event worth up to RM100,000. Hosted by Astro, the Watch Party will take place at the winner’s establishment beginning March 2024 onwards.

The party will feature various activities for walk-in customers, including an exclusive meet-and-greet session with local celebrities alongside international and local athletes, and complimentary meals and drinks.

The winning establishment will also receive an advertising package, leveraging Astro’s media platforms. Terms and conditions apply.

AstroBiz Watch Party was introduced in 2023 to raise awareness and promote local F&B establishments with Astro’s live sports. To date, Astro has successfully hosted more than 20 watch parties for AstroBiz customers nationwide.

A new milestone: Pioneer of gifts market blends convention in AI technology

WELCOMING 2024, the year of Dragon, Eu Yan Sang wishes everyone “a head start on the year of abundance of opportunities and personal progress”.

The company remembers that every progress that it achieves is based on kind-heartedness, or ren in Mandarin Chinese, and with a humane and caring attitude, a set of rituals or li is the guidelines of its behaviour.

“We are kind-hearted because we have others’ well-being in mind, and we follow rituals in our actions. Such attitude laid the foundation for EYS’s century-old business model to serve the motto of Caring for Mankind and to promote Gift of Gratitude,” said EYS Malaysia managing director Eric Chiu during the launch.

He added that looking back in history, rituals do change in different era and the company makes adjustments every now and then when there are changes in its roles and circumstances. What remains unchanged is the company’s attitude to show respect and gratitude.

“Year in, year out, EYS harnesses sincerity, convention and innovativeness in its design work displayed in hundred types of hampers and gifts. And customers find the combinations to be appropriate for various occasions.”

Eu Yan Sang has always been the outstanding player in gifts market. Since year 2000, EYS broke fresh ground by combining stage play and modelling in presenting hampers and gift boxes.

In 2022, EYS marked another new milestone to be the pioneer in 3D creation of hamper clusters.

In 2024, other than modelling, EYS also makes good use of AI technology to create a little AI Dragon to present Chinese New Year songs during the celebration of festive season throughout Malaysia.

The different types of gifts are created by AI technology, which also helps present EYS’s charity videos of each year to celebrate the happiness of reunion during the lunar new year.

In addition to creating new styles in gift giving, EYS is also actively playing its role in charitable cause.

A Bucket of Gold 2024 Programme aims to raise funds for Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Istimewa Hulu Langat (PKKIHL). The centre was founded in 1995 and they are raising funds to build an activity centre to cater the needs of more children with special needs.

“PKKIHL provides education for all, irrespective of background. We believe that any possibility is feasible. We’re running this centre with such belief,” said Shirley, dean of PKKIHL, during an interview.

“These children must not be taken lightly. They might have a more difficult start compared to others. Given the correct education and opportunities, they will be able to improve their capabilities and strive for limitless possibilities,” she added.

The children attending PKKIHL and their parents are handling their challenges positively. Through this fundraising campaign, such attitude represents the message of encouragement from EYS to fellow Malaysians who are also working hard to make a living. Needless to say, the goodwill traces back to mission to initiate A Bucket of Gold programme in the earlier years.

From now on until 24 February 2024, customers from all walks of life are welcome to visit any EYS store to purchase A Bucket of Gold. Part of the profits will be channelled to PKKIHL. A donation box to receive cash or cheque will also be available in every EYS store.

Employer’s guide to maternity leave in Malaysia

EXPECTANT mothers go through a huge life transition when welcoming a new member to their family, especially when such women are also part of the workforce. Therefore, maternity leave plays a pivotal role in supporting them as they cope with all the changes.

As an employer or human resource (HR) professional, it is crucial for you to be well-versed in maternity leave policies so you are clear about your legal obligations and can provide expectant employees with the essential support they need. The following is everything you need to know.

What is maternity leave?

Maternity leave is a type of paid or unpaid absence from work that is granted to employees who have recently given birth. It provides them with the necessary time to recover from childbirth, bond with their newborn, and address the various physical and emotional demands of motherhood.

It is a crucial workplace benefit that acknowledges the unique needs of expectant and new mothers, enabling them to place their professional lives on hold temporarily, while they deal with a significant life transition.

Maternity and paternity leave difference

Maternity leave and paternity leave are both types of leave granted to employees to support them during significant life events related to parenthood. However, they are designed for individuals in different roles and with different responsibilities.

Maternity leave is typically granted to female employees who have given birth or are about to give birth. Paternity leave, on the other hand, is granted to fathers or partners of individuals who have given birth. Its purpose is to provide fathers or partners with the opportunity to actively participate in the care of and bonding process with their newborn child.

Paternity leave recognises the importance of a father’s involvement in the early stages of parenting and encourages shared responsibilities in childcare.

Maternity leave tends to be longer than paternity leave due to the physical recovery and breastfeeding considerations for mothers. Paternity leave is often shorter but still vital for promoting family bonding, gender equality and work-life balance.

The specific duration and terms of both maternity and paternity leave also vary depending on company policies – some companies might choose to offer a longer period of maternity or paternity leave than legally required.

Are Malaysian employers legally obliged to provide maternity leave?

Yes, there are provisions for maternity leave for (female) employees under the Employment Act (EA). With new amendments made to the EA via the Employment (Amendment) Act 2022, there have been a few changes to maternity protections.

How many days of paid maternity leave do employees get?

The length of paid maternity leave has been increased from 60 consecutive days previously to 98 consecutive days now. However, it shall not commence earlier than 30 days immediately preceding the mother’s confinement, or later than the day immediately following her confinement.

In the context of maternity leave in Malaysia, the term “confinement” refers to the period of time following childbirth, where a mother takes time off from work to recover and care for herself and her newborn.

In Malaysia, the confinement period is culturally significant, and there are various traditional practices and customs associated with it.

Nevertheless, an employee may, with the consent of her employer, commence work at any time during the maternity leave – if she has been certified fit to resume work by a registered medical practitioner.

Maternity allowance (regular monthly salary)

During the maternity leave period, employees are entitled to receive maternity allowance, which is typically calculated based on their average monthly wage. This allowance is paid by the employer or the Social Security Organisation (Socso), depending on the circumstances.

Employers are required to pay maternity allowance to an employee, if she has been employed for:

- At least 90 days during the nine months immediately before her confinement; or,

- She has been employed at any time in the four months immediately before her confinement.

However, maternity allowance is only provided for the first five children of eligible employees – if a female employee has more than five children, she shall not be entitled to any maternity allowance at the time of her confinement.

Based on the EA, a female employee is required to notify her employer of the expected confinement period and maternity leave start date within 60 days prior.

Failure to do so or commencing maternity leave without any notice to the employer will cause her to lose her entitlement to maternity allowance.

Termination of a pregnant employee

If a female employee is pregnant or is suffering from an illness arising from her pregnancy, the employer may not terminate her employment, or give her a notice of termination of employment, except on the grounds of:

- A wilful breach of a condition of the contract of service;

- Misconduct; or,

- Closure of the employer’s business.

For cases in which a female employee is terminated under the aforementioned conditions, the employer bears the burden of proving that the female employee’s termination from employment was not on the grounds of her pregnancy or an illness arising from her pregnancy.

How many days of paid paternity leave do employees get?

Although there was no statutory requirement previously for employers in Malaysia to provide paternity leave to new fathers, thanks to the Employment (Amendment) Act 2022, married male employees are now entitled to seven days of paid paternity leave, which must be taken consecutively.

To qualify for paid paternity leave, married male employees must be:

- Employed by the same employer at least 12 months immediately before the commencement of such paternity leave; and,

- Have notified his employer of his spouse’s pregnancy at least 30 days from the expected confinement or as early as possible after the birth.

Can an employer refuse maternity or paternity leave?

Employers are not allowed to outright refuse maternity or paternity leave to eligible employees. They are protected rights that help support the wellbeing of employees. The EA now covers all employees, regardless of wages – which means that maternity and paternity leave are statutory provisions that employers must provide to employees.

Of course, there are certain conditions and requirements that employees need to fulfill to be eligible for maternity or paternity leave. If an employer were to refuse maternity or paternity leave to an eligible employee without proper justification, that would be in gross violation of labour laws, and could potentially lead to legal issues, complaints or disputes.
