Envoy: Algeria-Malaysia ties to be intensified, new opportunities explored

THE Algerian ambassador to Malaysia Abdelhafid Bounour recently announced that efforts are underway to raise awareness among Malaysians about the various aspects of Algeria, showcasing his country’s many opportunities and strengths.

This is due to the fact that since his arrival in Malaysia over six months ago, Bounour has observed that Algeria is not well known in Malaysia.

In this regard, he underscored the importance of developing relations between Algeria and Malaysia in key areas such as trade, investment, tourism, education and culture.

During a meeting with local journalists held at his official residence in Kuala Lumpur, Bounour expressed a desire to strengthen ties between the two “brotherly countries” and explore new opportunities for co-operation.

He listed down some key highlights of Algeria and also emphasised various aspects of Algeria, highlighting its numerous potentials in all fields:

- Strategic geographic location: Algeria is the largest country in Africa and the Arab world, covering an area of 2,381,741 square kilometres and sharing borders with seven countries. “Algeria offers unique investment and partnership opportunities due to its strategic geographic location. Its proximity to Europe, at a short distance from European countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea such as Portugal, Spain, France and Italy, further enhances these prospects.”

- Natural and energy resources: “From oil and natural gas to minerals and rare materials, Algeria has long been perceived as a land of wealth. Algeria produces iron and steel, precious metals like gold and silver, industrial minerals including barite, bentonite, cement, crushed stone, gravel, gypsum, helium, limestone, marble, nitrogen fertilizers, phosphate, pozzolana, quartz, salt, and sand in various forms. It also has significant untapped mineral deposits, including diamond, manganese, crystalline quartz, rare earth minerals, tungsten, and uranium.

- The Sahara: Bounour said the world's largest hot desert gives Algeria advantages in the fields of renewable energy and desert tourism. “I invite Malaysian companies to explore these promising sectors.”

- Major natural gas exporter: “Algeria is the top provider of natural gas to Europe, supplying natural gas to the continent through two main entry points: the two Medgaz pipeline to Spain and the two TransMed pipeline, which transports gas to mainland Italy,” said Bounour.

- Diverse Climate: With its four seasons, Algeria boasts a variety of landscapes that allow for different climatic experiences and varied scenery, ranging from Mediterranean beaches to snow-covered mountains, forests, and vast desert expanses. This climatic diversity, said Bounour, offers investment opportunities in agriculture, tourism, and renewable energy.

- Dynamic population, rich culture: Bounour also said that Algeria's dynamic and diverse 48-million population constitutes an attractive market.

- Education, research: Algeria's universities, numbering over 100 with 1.6 million students, enjoy a strong reputation, he said, adding that opportunities for educational partnerships and research collaborations are being considered.

- Transportation infrastructure: “Algeria possesses modern transportation infrastructure, including the metro and tramway, paving the way for closer commercial partnerships between the two countries. Algeria plans to open a direct air route between Algiers and Kuala Lumpur in June 2024. Citizens of both countries are exempt from entry visas to each other's territories,” Biounour said, adding that more information on the air route to be revealed next year.

Other facts and figures on Algeria include:

- Maritime facade of 1,622 km, with 51 ports for commerce, hydrocarbons, fishing, and recreation.

- 51 airports, including 20 international ones. The largest is the Algiers airport with a capacity of over six million passengers per year. Air Algerie is the national airline.

- Railway network spanning 4,695 km covering the north and south of the country.

- Road network of 918,140 km, including 1,408 km of highways and 10,227 km of the trans-Saharan road in the south (African Unity Road), of which 3,766 are on Algerian territory. The “African Unity Road” traverses six countries – Algeria, Tunisia, Niger, Mali, Chad, and Nigeria.

Bounour, who also mentioned that “significant progress” has been made in the fields of health, education, and housing, contributing to the country's social achievements, also briefly explained some facts about Algeria’s public health system, education, housing programmes, social security, food subsidies, economy and the equal status for men and women.

The ambassador reaffirmed his commitment to “intensify exchanges and strengthen co-operation between Algeria and Malaysia”, encouraging Malaysian companies to explore investment opportunities in Algeria and expressed confidence in a fruitful future for bilateral relations.

Bounour also advocated for strengthening cooperation in the tourism sector, encouraging the creation of specialised agencies or organisations to develop bilateral tourism. He concluded the meeting by saying that his objective is to enhance cooperation opportunities and promote cultural exchanges, thereby paving the way for exceptional tourism cooperation between the two countries.

Also present at the meeting was Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association president Uzaidi Udanis who looked forward to more tourism-related initiative by Algeria in Malaysia, such as a physical tourism “centre”, in the near future.

He stated that an Algerian tourism centre will be very useful to serve as a cultural bridge between the country and Malaysia, inviting Malaysians to explore the rich tapestry of Algerian culture, while at the same time promoting Malaysia to Algerians as a preferred tourist destination.

“With citizens of both Algeria and Malaysia enjoying visa-free travel, such the centre can be a conduit for meaningful people-to-people connections, fostering a spirit of friendship and mutual understanding.”

Discover Iwate, the ‘Golden Land’

THE Embassy of Japan in Malaysia and Japan’s Iwate prefecture jointly organised the “Discover the Golden Land: Iwate” reception yesterday.

The reception, held at the residence of the ambassador of Japan to Malaysia Katsuhiko Takahashi, featured cuisine and beverages made from Iwate’s specialties as well as introductions to tourism spots and an exhibition of traditional crafts.

Takahashi delightfully announced that Iwate is his hometown, welcoming his “long-time friend” Iwate prefecture Governor Takuya Tasso to the event and “to promote the charms of Iwate prefecture”.

“The popularity of Japanese cuisine has surged globally. In the context of Malaysia, exports of Japanese food products to Malaysia have tripled over the past five years and exports of sake from Japan increased 5.4 times over the past decade. In addition, the number of Japanese restaurants in Malaysia has shown a significant increase, with approximately 1,900 establishments in the country,” said Takahashi.

“Under this trend of increasing popularity of Japanese cuisine and sake, we have a good reason to expect Iwate’s presence to increase in Malaysia in this field.”

Takahashi pointed out that Morioka city, the capital of Iwate, was selected by the New York Times this year as the second top city to visit out of 52 cities worldwide, after London. “Many of you may be wondering why, but if so, Iwate should be next on your travel list. It is already crowded with foreign visitors, but it is not too late.”

Besides Morioka city, Iwate has many other attractions – in addition to its beautiful nature, said Takahashi, Iwate has three Unesco World Heritage Sites such as the temples and historical monuments in Hiraizumi.

“I hope that all of you will be fascinated by the charms of Iwate and will be excited if you start to pay extra attention to Iwate's products and to think about visiting Iwate.”

Ayam Brand campaign empowers 1,065 children for a Better Future

IT is estimated that up to 5.6 million school-going children in Malaysia face the double burden of malnutrition*, says Ayam Brand, the “131-year old Malayan heritage brand famed for its wide range of quality, preservative-free, no added monosodium glutamate (MSG), healthy, convenient and Halal-certified canned food”.

The company adds that the double burden of malnutrition is defined as the coexistence of both undernutrition and overnutrition in the same population across the life course**. “In short, malnourished children run the risk of becoming obese adults.”

“Worryingly, vision issues are also on the rise among Malaysian children with myopia prevalence among children at age seven at 9.8%, rising to 34.4% at the age of 15***. While some eye problems are inevitable for various reasons, others can be attributed to a lack of proper care.”

To assist with these issues, Ayam Brand yesterday held its “Community Care Campaign 2023”. Themed #AyamBersamaMu with the concept of “Tambah Sihat Bersama Ayam Brand”, it is expected to reach out to 1,065 children from 25 non-governmental organisations across six states, to provide a two-months’ supply or approximately 35,028 healthy meals.

Going beyond the contribution of its products, Ayam Brand is collaborating with the KPJ Healthcare Group, which will be running nutrition workshops to educate those children on healthier dietary choices, following the 3S (“Suku-suku Separuh”) Malaysian Healthy Plate concept.

To address vision issues among these children Ayam Brand is also working with Focus Point Vision Care Group Sdn Bhd to provide free eye health screening and prescription glasses to children from those homes who require them.

Ayam Brand says each of its participating home products are high in protein, calcium, Omega-3 and fibre including its Ayam Brand Tuna Mayonnaise, Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce and Soya Flakes Spread.

All Ayam Brand products are on the JAKIM (Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia) whitelist of Trusted Halal Food Brand.

“The risk of double malnutrition and myopia among Malaysian children requires action from all parties who can assist including organisations such as Ayam Brand. This is why we stepped up to help. Ideally all children should have good nutrition from birth,” says A. Clouet (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd marketing manager Teoh Wei Ling.

“Ayam Brand has a long history of contributing our healthy and nutritious products to communities, and we are continuing in that commitment. However, we believe that while providing our products is an immediate solution, over the long term, educating children on making healthier food choices is the key.”

She adds that Ayam Brand fish products are high in protein, calcium, Omega-3 and DHA, among other vitamins and minerals that children need for good health, including eye health.

“Studies conducted by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) found that Ayam Brand Sardines in Tomato Sauce was shown to have 7.1 times more Omega-3 compared to home-cooked locally caught fresh sardines, and Ayam Brand Mackerel in Tomato Sauce contains a whopping 7.6 times more Omega-3 compared to an equivalent serving of home-cooked locally caught mackerel.”

Teoh also adds that the Ayam Brand Community Care campaign which is now in its 16th year has contributed more than 2.1 million healthy meals for charity, providing nutritious food to more than 27,293 people from 610 charity homes and NGOs”.

At workshops held in each state, children learned about making healthier dietary choices from experienced dietitians including through informative and engaging sessions, including with KPJ Tawakkal Kuala Lumpur Specialist Hospital’s Nabihah Hannan Razaleigh.

She shared about the Malaysian Healthy Plate, with an introduction to the importance of Omega-3 for children’s eye health.

Next, each child put their new knowledge into practice by preparing themselves a healthy snack following the Suku-suku Separuh concept, guided by the KPJ and Ayam Brand team.

“Proper nutrition is important for children’s overall well-being, especially the consumption of protein for growth and development. One of those good protein sources is from fatty fish like tuna, saba, sardine, and mackerel, with good sources of Omega-3, which is vital for children’s brain development and eye health.

“Since our body cannot produce Omega-3 on its own, we need to obtain it from the foods we eat. One should consider consuming at least 2 servings of fatty fish weekly.”

The children also participated in memory matching and ball toss games, which allowed them to practise their visual recall and hand-eye coordination to reinforce what they had learned at the workshop. Members of the winning team each received a medal, while all participants received gift bags.

The team from Focus Point was on-site to provide eye health checks to all children. Those who require them will receive their prescription spectacles soon after.

Representatives from the charity homes expressed their gratitude for Ayam Brand’s continued support, and for the transformative impact it will have on the lives of the children.

Rumah Kasih Harmoni Paya Jaras supervisor Jamaluddin Wahab said the home always look forward to the Ayam Brand Community Care campaign.

“Ayam Brand products are delicious, nutritious, and a nice change from our usual meals and we are grateful for this support. We also look forward to the program itself because it is fun, educational, informative and fires up the children’s interest and passion for being healthy and eating well.

“The addition of prescription spectacles is very welcome, as some of the kids have myopia but glasses are expensive. This contribution will help them see a better future!”

‘Happiness can be found D’Sini’

D’SINI Residences was launched in Setia Alam, Shah Alam recently, “to bring forth an essence of enduring happiness in every corner that is inspired by the soothing embrace of Scandinavian design”.

The 1.45ha freehold development comprising two towers with a total of 500 units is spearheaded by Spectrum 88 Sdn Bhd – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Golden Land Berhad.

‘Hygge’ life

The company says that according to the World Happiness Report 2023, Scandinavian countries such as Finland, Denmark and Iceland are ranked the top three happiest countries in the world, while Sweden and Norway are placed sixth and seventh respectively – showcasing the region’s high levels of happiness.

“This is why the concept behind D’SINI Residences draws inspiration from the Scandinavian ethos “hygge” (pronouced hyooga), which refers to ‘a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being’.

“Taking a cue from the happiest countries in the world, D’SINI Residences embodies this recipe for happiness with the seamless blend of nature, technology, comfort, work and play – for a lifestyle where everything you need can be found di sini (“here” in Malay).”

Nature and play

The company adds that D’SINI Residences aims to create a balanced lifestyle for its homeowners to enjoy life’s simple pleasures, be in tune with nature and technology, foster a profound sense of relaxation, engage in communal bonding, and savour unparalleled convenience.

The development features a sprawling 0.4ha podium featuring green facilities, with numerous children’s play areas and nature-inspired amenities inspired by the hygge lifestyle.

The infinity pool deck offers a serene oasis with picturesque views for residents to unwind. At the same time, the Scandinavian-inspired Sunken Lounge and barbecue deck provide idyllic spaces for social gatherings and relaxation.

“The Scandinavian inspiration doesn’t end there; the podium boasts three distinctive streams, offering an array of experiences, each with its unique charm. The tranquil ambience of the Serene stream is the perfect place to dip your toes in and de-stress, while children can have fun in the Play stream.

“The Eco stream with its graceful dance of fish and gentle sway of water vegetation is where residents can foster a deeper connection with nature. Little ones can frolic in the designated water playground and children’s playground areas as well.”

But it isn’t all about entertainment and playfulness as there is plenty of places for residents to chill and unwind, such as the Hammock Garden and Zen Garden.

Residents also have access to various fitness amenities and facilities including an outdoor fitness area and a gymnasium that overlooks the Serene stream.

There will be a co-working space which also acts as a library, where residents can get a little change of environment when they work from home.

Goodnite Embraces the Importance of Sleep for Malaysians

KUALA LUMPUR: The fast-paced nature of contemporary life can make it difficult to take breaks and relax. It may make consistently getting a restful night’s sleep seem like a dream.

But just as vital to overall health as diet and exercise is sleep. Your mood, health, and cognitive function all improve with adequate sleep. Frequent sleep deprivation increases the risk of numerous illnesses and disorders. These include dementia, obesity, and heart disease, as well as stroke.

Goodnite International Sdn Bhd, the biggest mattress manufacturer in Malaysia, has launched its latest campaign, “Sleep Well, Live Well”.

According to Mr. Teo Yek Ming, Managing Director of Goodnite Group, the primary goal of the “Sleep Well, Live Well” campaign is to inspire individuals to lead healthy lives in addition to getting enough sleep.

“We constantly strive to offer our clients higher-quality goods and services. We are aware that the secret to restful sleep is a quality mattress. We’re dedicated to enhancing people’s quality of sleep,“ he said.

As a commitment to this effort, Goodnite has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Malaya (UM) on Sleep Research to enhance the company’s comprehension of consumer demographics, sleeping habits, and mattress recommendations. Through this partnership, academic rigor and industry expertise will come together to solve mysteries related to sleep patterns and biomechanics and provide customized recommendations for the best mattress choice for a range of age groups.

UM’s research title for this initiative is “A Comprehensive Study on Sleep Patterns and Personalized Recommendations for Optimal Mattress Selection across Different Age Groups.”.

According to Teo, the MoU represents a significant turning point for the company since it calls for research and development to create new products that satisfy consumer needs and demands.

“This is our first collaboration with UM, whereby they will conduct the research and analysis to gain a deeper comprehension of the kind of mattress that would be best for our clients. UM will provide us with valuable insights into customer sleep patterns and the best types of mattresses for various demographics.

“This collaboration is not merely about the union of two entities. It is about synergy, innovation, and a shared commitment to enhancing the quality of life,“ he said.

“Historically, people have associated us with making mattresses. Few people are aware that we sell household goods. In addition to mattresses, we produce and market a wide variety of furniture through Goodnite Outlet.

In light of this, he stated that Goodnite intends to expand the company’s product lines in 2024 and aim to revolutionize its customers’ sleep and living experiences.

“For instance, a lot of people are not aware that mattresses eventually gather dust mites, dead skin, dirt, and other debris over time. Here’s where our Mattress Cleaning Service can help, saving our customers time and energy and ultimately encouraging healthier and more restful sleep.

“Furthermore, Goodnite is actively developing a Smart Sleep System that will offer valuable insights into sleep patterns and potential health issues. We are thrilled about the positive impact it will have on our customers’ lifestyles,“ Teo said.

Goodnite also has plans to add a few new line-ups for the product range: a bedding collection, decoration items, and curtains. “Our focus extends beyond offering quality furniture; it brings a sense of belonging and infuses vibrancy into homes,“ said Teo.

To elevate the customization experience, Goodnite also employs fully automated assembly machines from Germany for custom-made cabinets. This is to provide its customers with a home transformation with a wide variety of ready modular designs in an easier and faster way, while maintaining a commitment to affordability.

“Goodnite hopes to continuously add quality choices and products for a complete home offering. After all, with a comfortable home, we get to rest well and live well with our loved ones,“ stated Teo.

“We are expanding our product line, and the ultimate aim is to establish a one-stop furniture outlet, making it easy and convenient for people to shop under one roof,“ Teo stated.

Teo said that the company is providing up to 36-month payment plans so that everyone can benefit from premium goods without having to fork over a large sum of money.

Goodnite’s mission is to provide high-quality furniture and services to enhance everyone’s life, he said.

“By the end of 2026, we hope to operate 60 one-stop furniture outlets, maintain 500 dealers nationwide, have 20 units of Goodnite signature shops in shopping malls, and expand our projects, exports, developers, and corporate sales to serve a larger market. I think we’re prepared to take a bigger chunk of the mattress and home goods market with our installment plan and new product lines,“ he remarked.

There will be a grand opening at Goodnite Outlet Petaling Jaya from December 15–17, complete with a lion dance performance, ribbon-cutting, and a complimentary halal buffet. During the course of the three-day event, a cash giveaway worth RM17,999 will take place with every purchase.

Dusit Hotels and Resorts to manage ASAI Gamuda Cove

DUSIT Hotels and Resorts, the hotel arm of Thai-based Dusit International, has a management agreement with Gamuda Land, to manage the ASAI Gamuda Cove hotel.

Dusit International is one of Thailand’s leading hotel and property development companies, while Gamuda Land is Malaysia’s leading property developer.

ASAI Gamuda Cove will be the former’s first hotel job in Malaysia and the first hotel development by the latter.

Slated to open in the first quarter of 2026, the hotel is situated next to the Paya Indah Discovery Wetlands within the Gamuda Cove township.

Spanning 619.2 hectares, Gamuda Cove will also include residential and commercial areas to complement a range of eco-friendly tourism attractions, such as the already operational SplashMania Waterpark and Discovery Park.

Gamuda Land says that the Kuala Lumpur International Airport is only 20 minutes away by car, and the city centre can be reached in just 40 minutes. The strategic location caters to both domestic and international travellers, enhancing the overall accessibility and appeal of the destination.

Operating under Dusit’s distinctive locally focused lifestyle brand, the 280-key ASAI Gamuda Cove hotel enjoys the distinction of being the first hotel signed under Dusit’s expanded “ASAI Tropical” model, specifically tailored for “properties located in areas of outstanding natural beauty”.

Like Dusit’s operational inner-city ASAI Hotels in Bangkok, Thailand and Kyoto (Japan), ASAI Tropical hotels will feature thoughtfully compact rooms delivering a distinctive blend of thoughtful essentials, such as plush beds and invigorating showers, complemented by an inviting communal space and locally inspired dining experience.

“What sets the model apart is the provision of a broader range of facilities. In this case, an infinity pool, more dining venues, expanded event spaces, and a wider variety of room categories, including spacious, family-friendly options,” says Gamuda Land.

“Strategically situated in the southern region of the Gamuda Cove development, ASAI Gamuda Cove will be designed to forge a sense of community by integrating local identity into its design language. Surrounded by lush greenscapes, the hotel will blend seamlessly with the adjacent wetlands and a sprawling 90-acre Wetlands Arboretum, accessible directly from the hotel.

Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) CEO Datuk Wira Arham Abdul Rahman emphasised the significance of Gamuda Land's launch of ASAI Gamuda Cove, marking their first hotel project in collaboration with Dusit International in Selangor’s vibrant hospitality scene.

“This decision stands as a testament of the growing positive business sentiment among investors in Malaysia’s tourism sector. The establishment also symbolises our country’s progressive move towards sustainable development, notably integrating with the intracity e-tram network in alignment with the government's aspiration towards ESG principles.

“In harmony with the tenets of the National Tourism Policy 2020-2030, our dedicated focus on attracting high-value, innovative investments is paramount to elevating Malaysia's tourism industry competitiveness and driving socio-economic development. Aligned to this, MIDA stands committed to supporting the realisation of Gamuda Land's vision, poised to unlock the full potential of this transformative project,” he added.

Further highlighting Gamuda Cove’s green credentials, an e-tram network – the first of its kind in Malaysia – will seamlessly link guests to hotspots within the development, such as Discovery Park, SplashMania Waterpark, and a pedestrian-only commercial hub, helping to limit the use of motorised vehicles and reduce carbon footprint.

Regular community-based activities and events will give guests a unique taste of local culture and experiences while highlighting the importance of responsible tourism.

ASAI Gamuda Cove is set to cater to both domestic and international tourists who will visit Gamuda Cove’s host of eco-tourism activities, such as SplashMania Waterpark, Discovery Park, and Paya Indah Discovery Wetlands – attracting a targeted 1 million visitors annually.

Gamuda Land chief commercial officer Eusoffe Chua said Gamuda Cove is a mindfully-planned township development offering exciting eco-friendly tourism activities including adventure and water parks. The masterplan comprises residential and commercial elements, including schools, universities, medical centres, vibrant retail spaces and offices with convenient access to Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, and Kuala Lumpur.

“In our collaboration with Dusit, we are thrilled to align with a strategic partner that shares our unwavering commitment to creating interconnected spaces where everyone can seamlessly integrate their living, working and recreational experiences.

“The ASAI brand, with its focus on delivering unforgettable local experiences, precisely caters to the evolving needs of today's local and international travellers. We eagerly anticipate a synergistic and enduring partnership as we invite guests to immerse themselves in the wonders of Gamuda Cove.”

Dusit International chief operating officer Gilles Cretallaz said: “To be entrusted with the management of the first hotel within the dynamic Gamuda Cove development truly is an honour, and we are delighted to partner with Gamuda Land to help bring their vision for their first-ever hotel project to life.

“With its stunning location and sustainable credentials, Gamuda Cove perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the ASAI brand, and we look forward to delivering a unique and unforgettable hotel experience that immerses guests in the diverse cultural tapestry of Malaysia and the natural beauty of the wetlands, all while contributing enduring value to our esteemed partners and the community we serve.”

Dusit’s property portfolio currently spans 19 countries and comprises 56 hotels operating under Dusit Hotels and Resorts and approximately 240 luxury villas under Elite Havens. More than 60 Dusit Hotels and Resorts are in the pipeline worldwide.
