MagnumCares, MNS plant 700 saplings at nature park

IN committing to environmental corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives and environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices, MagnumCares, the CSR arm of Magnum 4D Berhad, in collaboration with the Malaysian Nature Society collectively planted 700 trees at the Kuala Selangor Nature Park recently.

The initiative was led by Magnum 4D executive director Krian Upatkoon and executive vice-president and group chief commercial officer Datuk Chan Chee Fai, to “mark a significant milestone in Magnum's commitment to environmental conservation and protection”.

Magnum 4D stated that as part of its continued dedication to the United Nation Sustainability Goals (UNSDG), MagnumCares leverages the power of volunteerism to champion ESG practices to ensure Malaysia’s flora and fauna is well flourished and protected.

Over 50 Magnum employees participated in the initiative, planting over 700 tree saplings sourced from local communities and the indigenous Orang Asal from RPS Banun in Gerik, Perak.

“Whilst preserving the environment, the impactful endeavour also aims to empower our indigenous tribes in their efforts towards environmental stewardship,” said Upatkoon, who emphasised that MagnumCares firmly believes in empowering its employees to make a positive impact.

“This CSR activity reflects our dedication to fostering environmental sustainability, and we are proud to have engaged our employees in preserving the environment and accelerating towards combating climate change.

“Our employees embody the spirit of sustainability and their collective effort in planting 700 trees is a testament to our commitment to a greener future. This aligns with our broader ESG goals, fostering a harmonious balance between business growth and environmental responsibility.”

Chan added: “In 2022, MagnumCares planted 500 trees and is continuously taking steps of environmental protection with many of our CSR initiatives. This year, with the helpful collaboration of the Malaysian Nature Society, we increased our efforts by planting 700 trees in Kuala Selangor Nature Park to drive our efforts further in habitat conservation and environmental protection.

“Our aim is to foster a legacy that goes beyond business and extends to the preservation of nature for generations to come.”

Magnum 4D pointed out that Kuala Selangor Nature Park provides refuge to diverse wildlife and habitats and has attracted more than 150 species of birds and an estimated 100,000 wading birds, passing through during their annual migration.

The company added that by revitalising the park with numerous various types of tree saplings, MagnumCares is contributing to the conservation of multiple flora and fauna.

Beyond tree planting, in 2023, MagnumCares also pioneered a broader impact via the introduction of its digital CSR platform – Project Magnum Hearts, available on its MyMagnum 4D app.

“Project Magnum Hearts empowers our customers to gain ‘Hearts’ on their purchases to support a selection of charitable projects in Malaysia, reflecting our efforts in making a lasting positive impact to address diverse societal needs. Previous supported projects include reducing food wastage and championing educational support for underprivileged communities.

“MagnumCares looks forward to more future initiatives and innovative means that will further our mission of environmental and social stewardship while addressing societal challenges. The collective efforts of MagnumCares with the support of the community at large exemplifies a comprehensive and holistic approach that is establishing a commendable precedent to CSR, ESG and sustainable practices, achieved when corporations and communities unite for a sustainable future.”

Experience ‘My Christmas Story’ with Sunway Malls

TO celebrate the jolly festive season, Sunway Malls collectively launched their unifying Christmas theme “My Christmas Story” at the Sunway Velocity Mall on yesterday.

The launch marked the start of the mall group's month-long campaign across its seven physical mall and one digital mall.

The celebration began with a welcome speech by Sunway Malls & Theme Parks CEO HC Chan, followed by an official campaign launch with the various Sunway Malls centre managers.

The opening gambit saw Chan and the managers waving “magic wands” to bring the giant “My Christmas Story” book to life, accompanied by the lighting-up of the centrepiece “Threads of Tale” Christmas tree, a majestic 40 feet upcycled fabric Christmas tree at the mall's Main Atrium.

The launch also witnessed the 12.2-metre (40ft) tree certified by The Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) as a national record for the tallest upcycled fabric Christmas tree.

Also present at the event were partners L’Occitane, llao llao and Sunway College & STYLO, Fashion Design Technology Hub.

The creation of Malaysia's tallest upcycled fabric Christmas tree saw a public donation drive over two months, which resulted in the collection of 1.7 tonnes of unwanted fabric from the various Kloth Cares recycling bins in Sunway Velocity Mall.

The unwanted fabrics were then passed on to Life Line Clothing Malaysia for sorting and processing. Suitable fabrics were selected, cut and sewn to build the upcycled Christmas tree.

Additionally, hand-made fabric ornaments by the students of Sunway College & STYLO, Fashion Design Technology Hub were also added in.

The core structure of the tree and vine stripes made from recycled paper were also used, making it an entirely sustainable project. The group said the decoration inspired from “Jack & the Beanstalk” was a testament of relentlessness in finding solutions in every situation.

“Sunway Malls has endeavoured to incorporate the reuse of materials or source from sustainable sources for our festive decorations. This is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in which Sunway is a staunch advocate,” said Chan.

“As a leading mall group with 26 years in business, we take cognisance of the importance these opportunities offer to serve and create wonderful moments for our surrounding communities.”

Sunway Malls “My Christmas Story”’ pays homage to storybooks and storytelling. The mall group has recreated different experiences with different stories coming to life at all its malls with giant book displays in story town-themed décor.

Shoppers will be able to walk into books or experiential room hidden in a book and discover a variety of stories. Shoppers are also encouraged to share their own unique stories and #sunwaymalls on social media.

Sunway Pyramid

“Be mesmerised by Snowy's Winter Wonderland at Sunway Pyramid,” said the group. “Step into LG2 Blue Concourse to see a giant snowman crafted from a myriad of books. Complemented with an experiential winter wonderland room, shoppers will be adorned with snow which is perfect for a memorable photo session with their loved ones.

“Don’t miss out the Joyful Snow Time at Orange Entrance, Ground Floor, featuring a magnificent 9.1m (30ft) Christmas tree with a special snowing experience scheduled every Friday through Sunday at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm, transporting visitors into a whimsical winter scene.”

Sunway Velocity Mall

The group also reminded the public to visit Sunway Velocity Mall to witness “Threads of Tale”, the tallest upcycled fabrics Christmas tree in Malaysia. “It is said the tree was made from cloths collected by Coco the Red Cardinal, who is determined to bring joy back into the courtyard. Coco’s generous love was felt by the town and together, they transformed the courtyard into a magical wonderland.

“This act of love and community brought warmth and togetherness to the town, just like the 40ft ‘Threads of Tale’ came to life through the collective effort of the Sunway Velocity Mall and the neighbouring community, symbolising a shared commitment to sustainability and environmental consciousness.”

Shoppers can still participate in this ongoing fabrics-donation drive, by donating their recyclable fabrics to Kloth Cares Bins or crates at various locations in Sunway Velocity Mall, from now till Jan 1.

Shoppers can also get a surprise gift for their donation at Concierge Counter, Level 1 (near Brands Outlet).

Sunway Putra Mall

Starting this Christmas to next year’s Chinese New Year, Sunway Putra Mall and their partner The Salvation Army has made a pact to make a difference in their neighbouring community.

With the aim to raise funds for the upgrade of The Salvation Army's kindergarten located at Taman OUG, Kuala Lumpur, shoppers are encouraged to do good this season and contribute to the cause - through books donation at Basement 1 near Carpark Entry B; or by donating funds via cash at the Concierge Counter at Ground Floor, or via SunwayPay.

“More than a mere display, ‘My Christmas Stories’ is also celebration of Malaysia's cultural mosaic, offering a joyous glimpse into shared stories that bind us together during this festive season,” said the group.

Sunway Giza Mall

Quitting corporate job to help less fortunate

PETALING JAYA: After quitting his corporate job, Justin Cheah decided to join an NGO, Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK). But little did he know that he would end up as its marketing director.

Cheah said he took the job after being inspired by the vision of KSK’s founder, Tsem Rinpoche.

“Rinpoche’s vision is to improve the lives of the homeless by building a centre where they can live off the streets.

“I was inspired and felt KSK is the right NGO to join as it gives free food and provides other assistance to help the homeless.”

Cheah said joining KSK has added meaning to his life as he shares core values and beliefs that align with its mission and goals.

“I was working in a foreign bank before quitting to run my own business. I found out about KSK in 2007 and volunteered for about a year before eventually becoming their first full-time staff.

“A lot of my friends also believe that I have found my true calling. I see myself being able to spend the rest of my life living meaningfully and waking up each morning knowing that I can do something to benefit the community.”

Cheah said showing kindness and care for the less fortunate is one of his core beliefs. And it aligns so well with KSK’s vision. “Giving time to help others empowers them to break their problem cycle.”

He said he was initially worried about the challenges when transitioning from a high-paying job to working for an NGO.

“I was mainly worried about my ability to make ends meet and pay all my bills.

“I also worried about my career path, especially when I was still in my early 30s at the time and felt some pressure from society’s expectation to build a career.

“But once I decided to join KSK, I let go of my insecurities and just poured myself into the work at hand. I believed things will turn out well for me.

“It’s been 16 years since I made that fateful decision to quit my corporate job and join an NGO, but I have no regrets.”

Cheah said the best experience he has had working at KSK was seeing people he has helped return to show their gratitude.

“I feel so gratified when I see someone I previously helped return to KSK to say hello. In the end, it’s all about touching lives and making it better for them.”

Cheah said there was a lady who was going through the last days of her life after battling cancer. We traced her family and found her brother who told us about her life.

“Handling such emotionally charged situations is not easy, and I have to be in the right state of mind when working.

“I must always remain neutral in the cases that I deal with. Becoming emotional will affect our ability to make informed decisions, and this won’t be fair to those we are serving.

“Professionalism has to be there, just like a surgeon operating on a patient.”

Cheah said working at KSK has made him a better person. The most important value society must have, he said, is to bring about positive change to the less fortunate through empathy for our fellow men.

“I learnt that my problem isn’t that big at all compared with those we serve. It helped me to be more humble.

“We must always look out for one another because, without empathy, I wouldn’t have existed till now.”

Subang Jaya grows into dynamic city

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s newest city, Subang Jaya, exudes irresistible charm and vibrance with its diverse community.

The city is today one of the most desirable places to live, work and visit, thanks to its many malls and eateries.

The community spirit, coupled with the efforts of its state assemblyman Michelle Ng Mei Sze and the dedication of its residents, has transformed the city into a dynamic one that continues to thrive and evolve.

Ng was elected in the 2018 general election. At just 28 years old, she was one of the youngest candidates to stand for public office in Selangor at the time.

Speaking about the city’s success, Ng said one of the key factors is its robust economy.

“Subang Jaya is home to numerous multinational corporations, bustling business districts and a booming entrepreneurship scene.

“Because of this, we have a steady influx of job opportunities, which further attracts local and international talent to the city.”

Ng said with its extensive network of highways, efficient public transport systems and modern facilities, the city provides ease of accessibility and convenience for residents and visitors alike.

The city’s innovative and well-planned infrastructure also contributes to its growth.

“We take great pride in Subang Jaya’s green spaces and commitment to environmental sustainability, which boasts numerous parks, recreational areas, and eco-friendly initiatives that encourage a greener and healthier lifestyle for its residents.”

As a result of these elements, Ng said Subang Jaya has become a desirable place to live, work and visit.

However, Ng’s journey towards community development has not been without its fair share of challenges.

As she reflected on these, she said: “During the Covid-19 pandemic, like other assemblymen, the team and I faced immense challenges trying to balance public health and safety with the need to effectively represent my constituents.

“It was not an easy time, considering the impact on local businesses and the economy with the imposition of lockdowns, restrictions and punlic safety protocols.”

Besides these, the rapid spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories during the pandemic also raised much concern among her constituents.

“My team and I had to combat the spread of false information and ensure that accurate and reliable information was communicated to the community.

“With social distancing measures in place, adapting to the virtual or hybrid methods of engaging with the constituents was particularly challenging.

“The team also struggled with maintaining open lines of communication and holding virtual town hall meetings and public hearings to address concerns and gather feedback,” she recalled.

On the economic impact of the pandemic, Ng said it resulted in job losses and financial struggles for many individuals and businesses in her constituency.

As a result, she had to work hard on advocating and implementing relief measures to support those affected.

Despite the challenges, she said she was grateful to be able to juggle multiple responsibilities and adjust priorities to support her constituents.

“Navigating through the difficult times by balancing emergency response efforts and addressing the psychological toll the pandemic placed on my constituents was challenging as it needed quick decision-making.

“We had to put in place initiatives to support mental health and help individuals cope with the stress and anxiety caused by the Covid crisis.

“But everything turned out well in the end, thanks to the understanding of all parties, especially my constituents who remained patient despite the hardships they faced,” Ng said.

She poined out that the city also faced an additional challenge in the form of excessive rainfall, leading to repeated floods.

“USJ1, which is beside the Klang River, was badly affected by the 2021 floods. Excessive rainfall used to happen once in 10 years.

“But now, it is happening every year. Climate change remains an issue that needs to be actively addressed.”

Ng said these floods presented numerous challenges to the people. Many lost their homes and were displaced. They were also short of food, had limited resources to fall back on, lacked necessities and suffered emotional trauma.

“My heart went out to those affected by the floods. My team and I were committed to providing relief and support to the affected residents. We had to ensure their safety and well-being.

“Although much progress has been made since then in terms of community development, there are still obstacles to overcome,” she said.

However, with unwavering determination and the support of residents, Ng said, Subang Jaya has managed to prevail over all obstacles and flourish into the thriving city that it now is.

On her current challenges, Ng emphasised the need for stakeholder consensus and coordinated action to drive meaningful change in communities.

She said ensuring the long-term sustainability of community projects should be prioritised as this will help secure a lasting impact.

“Through more collaborative efforts, we engaged the community to participate in sustainable initiatives.

“With this, the township will continue to progress and achieve our community development goals.”

By focusing on leaving no one behind and creating opportunities for growth and empowerment, Ng said Subang Jaya will continue to thrive and provide a better future for all its residents.

Vegetarian feast for devotees during Nine Emperor Gods Festival

PENANG: The Nine Emperor Gods Festival or “Kao Ong Eah” in the Hokkien dialect, is a tradition that has roots in Taoist tradition. This year’s festival started on Oct 15 and devout Taoists, including Buddhists, believe this to be an auspicious time to undergo a nine-day spiritual cleansing and transformation journey.

They immersed themselves in prayer and adopted a strict vegetarian diet. This age-old custom, which begins on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese Lunar calendar, has been passed down through the centuries and is engrained in the Taoist way of life. Coincidentally, from Oct 15 to 24, the Hindu community in Penang also observing a 10-day vegetarian diet in conjunction with the Navarathiri Festival.

Many stalls were set up near Sien Chye Tong Temple to cater to devotees who observed a full or partial nine-day vegetarian diet.

As Taoists and Hindus ushered in the two major festivals on the same day, big crowds flocked to the vegetarian stalls.

To provide an insight into these captivating festivals, we spoke with local stall owners and observers who shared their experience.

“This year, I ran my vegetarian stall at Block D of the Rifle Range flats. Although the prices of vegetables have gone up, we try to maintain our cheap prices, largely due to the senior residents in our area. We do our best to uphold the tradition as this is a time for spiritual reflection and doing good deeds,” said Ann Neoh, a familiar figure in the community.

Apart from vegetables, vegetarian dishes feature soy, beancurd, tofu and gluten flour as these ingredients are incredibly adaptable and can take on various flavours. Tofu, a versatile favourite, works well in curries, soups, and stir-fries.

Like meat, beancurd skin can be crispy, and soy and gluten flour “meat” provides plant-based protein. Vegetarian cuisine has expanded greatly in recent times, with an array of plant-based meat options and amazing recipes that are simply too tempting to resist.

Indeed, vegetarians have a wide array of choices that cater to their culinary preferences.

However, in line with Taoist monastic traditions, vegetarian food can sometimes be quite bland as devotees abstain from the five “pungent plants” that are said to negatively impact mindfulness.

These are Chinese chives, garlic, onions, coriander and rapeseed plants. To maintain mental clarity or attachment to strong flavours, the chef also avoids making the dishes too spicy or flavourful.

The Sien Chye Tong Temple, located at Hye Keat Garden in Air Itam, offered complimentary vegetarian meals during the festival. After dining, visitors were free to make a donation of any amount to the temple.

“In Buddhism, we believe in collecting merits by doing good deeds and committing ourselves to vegetarianism, even for nine days, as this aligns with one of the five precepts of Buddha’s teachings, which is to refrain from taking lives,” said Sien Chye Tong Temple youth chairman Loh Choon Teik.

He said although the Nine Emperor Gods Festival is mostly a Taoist event, many Buddhists also celebrate it.

Along Jalan Air Itam was a vegetarian stall organised by Low Kim Shing, who said: “We have been setting up stall here for the past 30 years or so, and we have volunteers from all over the world who come to help out. Our chef cooks between 50 and 60 dishes daily to cater to the crowd.”

Willam Khoo, a lawyer by profession and volunteer at the Low’s stall who has been observing the nine-day vegetarian diet all his life, shared: “As a devout Taoist, this festival means a lot to me and my family. It’s a time when we cleanse our bodies and minds through a strict vegetarian diet, and practise kindness, generosity and benevolence.”

The origins of the celebration are rooted in Taoist folklore, in which the Nine Emperor Gods are celestial entities linked to the stars in the Ursa Major constellation. Seven of the deities correspond to the Big Dipper, a constellation composed of seven brilliantly shining stars. Polaris and Vega represent the other two deities. These stars serve as significant celestial landmarks, particularly in the northern hemisphere, guiding travellers and sailors. The mythological importance of the Northern Dipper also resonates with cultures worldwide.

Legend also tells the story of Dou Mu, a devout Taoist whose nine sons were involved in a plot to overthrow the Qing Dynasty.

Dou Mu then adopted a strict vegetarian diet to protect her sons. She is also known as the Goddess of the Northern Star.

In addition to the nine-day vegetarian diet, this story also inspired many Chinese to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle on the first and fifteenth day of each lunar month, known as “Chiak Jeh.”

“Although I’m not a Taoist or Buddhist, I’ve always found Penang’s Nine Emperor Gods Festival to be fascinating.

“It is a unique cultural experience. Sometimes, we can even see mediums in a trance, other than the colourful processions and festive atmosphere. I like to see how our community comes together.

“Besides, going vegetarian is really good for health,” said Rebecca Ng, who was dining with a few coworkers.

On the eve of the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, devotees of Dou Mu dressed in white congregate by a river or beach to receive the nine celestial beings.

The deities are then carried in nine sedan chairs in a magnificent procession to temples, where over the course of nine days, joyous festivities are held in their honour.

Sometimes, representatives of smaller temples visit larger temples to pay their respects to the deities, and they arrive with full fanfare.

On the last day, the deities are ceremoniously sent off, and it is believed that rain always falls on that evening, signifying blessings from above.

The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is observed in many Southeast Asian countries, such as Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Myanmar and Indonesia, but its distinct Penangite flavour gives this long-standing custom a unique twist.

The Nine Emperor Gods Festival in Penang is a cultural event that brings people together to celebrate spirituality and heritage, rather than solely being a religious tradition.

This unique experience in Penang fills the air with anticipation and brings the streets to life as they resonate with the sounds of Taoist mythology and local legends.

Chinese children’s book galore in KL

PETALING JAYA: The first ever Chinese Children’s Picture Book Exhibition in Malaysia on Nov 18 and 19 at Wisma CL, Bukit Damansara in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 18 and 19. The exhibition opens from 10am to 4pm.

Organised by the Malaysian Public Library Research and Development Centre, the exhibition will feature 164 lively and imaginative picture books from 24 publishers in China for readers aged four to 12.

Event organiser Wong Tuck Cheong said the exhibition is an initiative of the Confucius Institute at SEGi University as part of its mission to promote Chinese culture, language and literature in Malaysia.

“Organising an exhibition that is devoted to the children’s book genre is unique and the first of its kind in Malaysia,” he said yesterday.

“There is an increasing demand of Chinese children’s books in the global market. Many countries and regions are eager to learn about Chinese stories and culture.

“However, these books are not generally well known or easily available locally. We aim to introduce these children’s books from China to Malaysians who are not familiar with them.”

Wong said the children’s books, which feature interesting plots from Chinese perspective and ingenious character designs, are award-winning books.

“These books have been recognised by the Hans Christian Andersen Award, Feng Zikai Award and Xinyi Awards,” he added.

The award-winning books have made appearances in major book fests around the world such as in Frankfurt in Germany and Bologna in Italy.

“Among these award-winning titles are Daisy Doll by Cao Wenxuan and illustrated by Zhao Lei, Ding Bean is Going Home, written and illustrated by Huang Lili, and Dancing Cranes written by Bao Dongni and illustrated by Xia Jinghan.

“These fan favourite books can improve the readers’ standard of knowledge, literacy and culture,” Wong said.

He said the children’s book industry is booming in China, which led to many high-quality books being published.

“The book publishing industry is facing fierce competition among publishers who are competing for sales and awards, thus raising the quality of the books. Famous children’s book publishers in China will be featured during the event.

“Among the featured publishers are People’s Education Press (PEP), Children’s Publishing House, and Tomorrow Publishing House,” Wong said.

Aside from its main exhibition of children’s books, there will be storytelling sessions and calligraphy classes.

“Through these activities, we intend to attract parents, teachers and children to visit the exhibition,” he said.

Wong also said the exhibition represents the highest level of children’s picture book production in China.
