Salt, stress & stroke: A lethal combination

MANY Malaysians are unaware of the impact of salt in their diet. The British Heart Foundation in their “Heart Matters” magazine believes that salt could be sabotaging your health due to its high sodium content. It consists of 40% sodium and 60% chloride but the sodium content, if not managed carefully in our diets could lead to health complications.

Salt is needed by the body but not much. Currently, the recommended salt intake for adults is less than 6gm a day but more is consumed daily, people regularly consume 9gm, not realising the increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and vascular dementia.

Cardiovascular Institute of Northwest Florida cardiologist Dr Bussie Evans believes more can be done to bring down the level of salt consumed.

“Ideally, home-cooked food instead of packaged and tinned food can make a huge effect in salt consumption. And when cooking at home, avoid salt and instead use herbs and spices for flavour, instead of salt.

“Also, for example soy sauce and barbecue sauce can really add on sodium intake to the body and people are advised to read the level of sodium or salt in the food labels,” he said.

Another side effect of high salt consumption is its effect on stress, as studies by the University of Edinburgh have shown that high salt content in the body elevates stress levels, and more research needs to be carried out to see the co-relation between salt and stress levels in the body.

Salt and stress are a dangerous combination for those with hypertension (high blood pressure). To check on one’s blood pressure and heart health, a regular monitoring system has to be put in place, not only at clinics and hospitals but at home. Did you know that a simple habit of regular home blood pressure monitoring can significantly reduce your risk for stroke by 54%?

Regular checking can reveal abnormalities, as the normal reading is 120/80, but to ensure accuracy, blood pressure can be taken at regular intervals, using a good blood pressure monitor and OMRON Healthcare’s Japan-imported blood pressure monitors are clinically validated and meet the highest standards of precision and reliability.

OMRON Healthcare sets the standard as its range of connected devices also linked with the OMRON Connect mobile app, which automatically records and keeps track of blood pressure readings anytime, anywhere. These readings help with monitoring trends and changes, giving valuable insights about your blood pressure, and can be programmed to give reminders for medication times as well. One’s health data can easily be uploaded, stored and shared with loved ones and doctors, ensuring that you will always have the information you need at your fingertips.

In return for the trust placed in OMRON, the HealthGift digital rewards programmes awards points (collected in the form of HealthCoins) for health prevention activities such as the regular measuring of one’s blood pressure.

These HealthCoins can then be redeemed for vouchers such as Shell, Touch ’n Go, Family Mart and much more. Additionally, HealthGift users can also participate in the monthly or quarterly bidding to win exciting prizes such as Dyson home appliances, iPads and more!

Thus, through regular monitoring OMRON aims to build a community of health conscious individuals, so action can be taken at the right time for those with heart conditions and other related heart conditions.

Zero accident policy: A safety revolution

KUALA LUMPUR: The Alliance For A Safe Community (Ikatan) organised a groundbreaking three-day training programme for occupational safety and health (OSH) coordinators last Monday.

The initiative took place simultaneously at two strategic venues, a public class in Ikatan’s headquarters at Bukit Bintang City Centre, and in Segamat (Johor) where two SMEs were actively engaged.

One hundred free seats were provided to employees from SMEs for the three-day programme as part of Ikatan’s corporate social responsibility to employees and their right to a safe working environment.

Ikatan chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye in his opening speech said safety is a basic human right of any employee.

“It is for an employee to go to work and return home safely. It is the collective responsibility of employees, employers and the government to reinforce the importance of safety at work.

“Workplace safety must be treated as an investment instead of an expense. Organisations will benefit from OSH practices in terms of productivity, because accidents can cause a total work halt.”

Frederick Charles, who received a free seat in the training programme, is very thankful to Ikatan for hosting the session.

“Organisations with five or more employees must have an OSH coordinator, based on the amendments to the OSH Act.

“This training is good for organisations that want to take the first step in implementing OSH in the workplace.”

Charles, who works at a medical employee benefits organisation, said the practice of OSH is extremely important for the workplace.

“Overall safety is critical for employees. The perception is that safety is more important for construction, manufacturing or industrial work. But even administrative work needs safety.

“Sometimes, a person needs to handle appliances and moveable parts at work and if he does not have a good understanding of workplace safety, a simple job can turn into a hazardous situation.”

Charles said he has witnessed workplace injuries, which motivated him to gain more knowledge on the issue.

“I find OSH very important because I have worked in construction and have seen negligence to the extent of serious injuries and fatalities at the work site.

“If there had been the same kind of enforcement on OSH as there is now, many injuries and fatalities could have been prevented.

He added that injuries could be avoided if correct practices are put in place.

“Safety is a top priority. Life is not cheap and once an injury occurs, it takes time to heal and sometimes, one may have to live with a permanent injury.

“We should not take safety for granted and try our best to avoid workplace accidents to the best of our ability.”

Another participant, Marco Chaw Swee Ming, said he and his colleague joined the training programme because of his commitments to his workplace.

“My company intends to form a safety committee because we have over 50 employees. But we lack knowledge of OSH, so this programme would benefit us.

“We wanted to attend to the needs of our employees by providing benefits in terms of safety and health. Besides, it is important to abide by the new amendments to the OSH Act 1994 that require organisations with over five employees to appoint an OSH coordinator.

“This programme will serve as a preventive measure to decrease the chances of workplace accidents.”

Chaw, who is Academy of Safety and Emergency Care human resources and development manager, said he only expected to learn how to form a safety committee, but he gained much more from the training.

“We learned how to create standard operating procedures, safety policies and hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk control (HIRARC).

“My mindset on safety has also changed. It should not be out of compliance but out of care for our employees.”

Chaw said the knowledge gained at the programme will be used to influence his bosses and colleagues.

“Safety is everybody’s responsibility. Safety officers and employers hold some responsibility but employees are also responsible for adhering to guidelines and policies set. To spread awareness of OSH, it is important for me to share what I have learned here.”

Chaw said trainers at Ikatan share important information based on their own experiences regarding OSH.

“The basics can be learned from the internet but what trainers provide is their personal experience on OSH.

“The real-world experience they provide is more valuable than the theories that can be studied and it is a more practical style of learning.”

Ikatan OSH coordinator trainer Engku Nasir Said Mohammad said OSH coordinators must advise their higher-ups on safety issues and manage occupational safety and health at their workplaces.

“The training that Ikatan conducts as allowed by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health helps OSH coordinators achieve their goal with knowledge on OSH issues. The programme focuses on SMEs because they lack the resources to certify themselves.

“Their duties are to advise their managers when faced with safety issues at work, conduct inspections and perform HIRARC management at their workplace.

Nasir urged employees from SMEs to participate in OSH coordinator training because many people are either unaware or negligent on matters of safety.

“There are around half a million SMEs in Malaysia. If we can guide one coordinator in every SME, we hope to reach a perfect zero-accident policy.”

Another trainer, Prame Kumar, who led the training session at Segamat, stressed the holistic approach.

“Throughout the programme, participants grasped the necessities and consequences of safety. From HIRARC, they learned vital workplace safety measures.”

“We emphasised individual exercises and group work, crucial for future OSH coordinators. It is about mastering self-care before aiding others, reflecting in our 11-module Ikatan training.”

While praising participants, Prame said: ”They exceeded expectations in theory and practice, displaying full commitment. With OSHA/AKKP 2022, a positive shift in Malaysia’s workplace safety is imminent.”

In addition to the paid training classes, Ikatan will be continuing its 100 free-seat offer for the OSH-C training programme from September to December on a first-come first-served basis.

For more information on Ikatan and the programmes it provides, visit https://ift.tt/5Ak0eal.

To join and benefit from the OSH-C training programme, small companies that meet the criteria are encouraged to contact Ikatan through email at tnc.ikatan@gmail.com or call 03-21100236.

Propelling student triumph: Harnessing soft skills and purposeful learning for success

By Dr. Wong Siew Chin

Head of School for School of Pre-University Studies, Taylor’s College.

PETALING JAYA: In our rapidly changing world, the concern for the 'skills gap' has taken centre stage. Many prominent voices in the industry, notably the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF), have consistently drawn attention to the issue of skills mismatch, especially among fresh graduates.

This misalignment between job seekers' expertise and industry requirements often forces graduates into roles that underutilise their skills, perpetuating skill-related underemployment.

To confront this critical issue, stakeholders have advocated for a comprehensive solution that transcends technical competencies.

President of MEF, Syed Hussain Syed Husman has stressed the urgency of equipping graduates with essential skills and knowledge. While proposals to foster closer partnerships between employers and higher education institutions gain traction, there is another crucial facet deserving equal consideration: the development of soft skills.

While response to this challenge mandates acknowledging the evolving parameters of success, it’s increasingly apparent that a well-rounded skill set encompassing technical prowess and essential soft skills is indispensable for navigating the complexities of the modern era.

While academic excellence retains its significance, the future belongs to those who meld soft skills with a resolute sense of purpose. These attributes are pivotal not just for personal growth, but also for excelling in the professional realm. Consequently, educational institutions hold the key to shaping individuals who can harness their full potential and metamorphose into purpose-driven leaders of tomorrow.

Soft skills, often termed non-cognitive skills, span a broad spectrum of attributes that surpass academic knowledge. Effective communication, critical thinking, empathy, problem-solving, adaptability, collaboration – these bedrock soft skills empower individuals to shine across diverse spheres of life. In the cutthroat job market, these skills have assumed unprecedented importance.

While a robust academic foundation in 'hard skills' will always have its place, our educational approach must seamlessly integrate soft skills. Our curriculum must meticulously nurture these pivotal attributes, guiding students on a path of self-discovery and goal attainment. This approach bequeaths students not only technical proficiency but also a comprehensive skill set that harmonises with their innate talents and aspirations.

Cultivating soft skills in students won't just equip them with career-relevant knowledge; it will also mould them into well-rounded individuals who are in sync with their passions and ambitions – a voyage towards discovering their true purpose.

The notion of purpose emerges as an influential impetus for achieving excellence in life. A clear sense of purpose serves as a beacon, shaping decisions, propelling actions, and fuelling unwavering determination to effect positive change. Purpose-driven individuals emanate a distinct focus, resilience, and dedication that empower them to navigate future uncertainties with unparalleled conviction.

Our educational philosophy should extend beyond academics, embracing the transformative power of purpose-driven learning. Through a diverse array of subjects and extracurricular endeavours, students are encouraged to explore their values, passions, and interests.

In doing so, they unveil their individual purpose, aligning academic and career trajectories accordingly. Our commitment to fostering student attributes should extend further through community engagement, where students can recognise their capacity to contribute positively to society.

For instance, at Taylor’s College, our purposeful learning experiences exemplify our dedication to effecting positive change, marking the inception of transformative learning journeys.

Our programmes like “Start It Right” and various developmental workshops in mental health, personal development, and leadership, coupled with community engagement initiatives like “Toy Library Malaysia” and “CAREbinet by The Risers,“ allow students to actively cultivate effective communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and community involvement. This holistic approach lays the groundwork for academic success and compassionate, purpose-driven citizenship.

Through this purpose-driven approach, our goal is twofold: to nurture soft skills and tangibly transform lives, enabling students to gain invaluable real-world experience.

As we stand on the precipice of an evolving professional landscape, it's imperative to recognise that addressing the skills gap goes beyond technical proficiency. The fusion of soft skills and a resolute sense of purpose will not only equip individuals for professional success but also empower them to lead purposeful lives that make meaningful contributions to society. By prioritising these attributes in education, we embark on a journey toward a future brimming with holistic achievers and purpose-driven leaders.

With over 20 years of experience in the private education sector, Dr. Wong Siew Chin has held a variety of academic and management positions throughout her career. After spending 14 years at Cempaka International School, where she served in numerous roles, she was eventually named the Principal of Cempaka Schools (National and International Schools) at the Cheras campus.

In 2017, she became the Founding Principal of Sri Bestari International School, a subsidiary of Land & General Berhad, and has played a key role in its growth and development.

Dr. Wong holds a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science, a Doctorate in Management & Education Policy from the University of Malaya, and a Master of Business Administration from Monash University.

As a teacher at heart and a mother of two, she believes in encouraging students to stay true to themselves and actively work towards building their own identity, discovering their calling in life, learning how to excel at it, and creating value in the world.

Lotus’s Malaysia shows supports to SMEs with sixth ‘Buy Malaysia’ campaign with Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living

Lotus’s Malaysia has launched its sixth ‘Buy Malaysia’ campaign at its Cheras outlet.

A strategic retail partner to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, this campaign aims to raise the marketability of Malaysian brands, boost consumer interest in purchasing local goods, increase patriotism amongst Malaysians, raise awareness on the affordability and quality of Malaysian goods and help local Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) market and exhibit their products.

Lotus’s Malaysia has partnered up with 112 local SMEs that offer more than 900 product lines, of which 90% are certified Halal.

The launch featured product samples from 17 local homegrown brands and three social enterprises and local NGOs that will exhibit their products and services. Customers will be able to sample and support from today till Sunday, Aug 20 at Lotus’s Cheras.

Lotus’s has also awarded its ten best performing SMEs for the year 2022 and announced 12 new suppliers who have joined the Lotus’s SME network for the year 2023.

“For us, the spirit of #KitakanJiran drives us to continue our commitment in carrying out our responsibilities in supporting, transforming, improving and promoting the capacity and capabilities of local SMEs through our B2B programme”, said Azliza Azmel, Lotus’s Malaysia Corporate Services Executive Director.

The retailer has also given SMEs access to its resources, expertise and distribution network that will help them to innovate in product development, as well as to create job opportunities and contribute to the overall economic growth in Malaysia

Besides that, Lotus’s SME Support Team is working closely with MDT and various government agencies to further raise the marketability of Malaysian made products.

Last June, the retailer invested RM50 million through its #LotussLebihMurah campaign to help Malaysians cope with the rising cost of living.

This is in addition to its ongoing campaigns to give consumers the best value for their ringgit spent such as Segar & Murah, Hari-Hari Harga Rendah, Purchase with Purchase (PWP) and Weekly Promotions.

“In reaffirming our support toward local SMEs, 90 per cent (3000 products) of our Lotus’s Own Brand products are sourced and manufactured by local partnering SMEs, and many have become household favourites.

“With the rising cost of living due to inflation, our house brands offer consumers an alternative, 15 to 20% cheaper in pricing and quality at par with national brands,” added Azliza.

Lotus’s also provides a free My Lotus’s Loyalty programme where customers can earn reward points for every purchase at its physical and online store, and this includes its food courts.

Further savings can be enjoyed when customers redeem these points for discounts, vouchers or as payment for their next purchases with the retailer, in stores or on Lotus’s Shop Online.

Additionally consumers can look forward to Lotus’s RM 5 Menu RAHMAH meals at all its 59 food courts. In fact, food operators offering RAHMAH meals can enjoy a 10 per cent price reduction in key ingredients.

In her speech, Azliza also spoke of the retailer’s success in providing 10.4 million meals to more than 120,000 under resourced families through its daily Food Surplus programme, and its aspiration to be more than just a shopping destination but a brand that supports the needs of local communities and Malaysia’s sustainable growth.

[Design Story] Inspire, Create, Unfold: The world of Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5

Ever since the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold pioneered the foldable smartphone experience, the Galaxy Z series has led the market with breakthrough products that highlight the pinnacle of technology and design. To this day, the series’ designers are deeply committed to refining foldable devices. This ongoing innovation not only showcases a profound understanding of users’ lifestyles but also demonstrates the dedication to enriching daily lives.

In line with this vision, Samsung Electronics’ latest foldable lineup opens even more possibilities for users. The Galaxy Z Flip5’s new Flex Window unfolds new opportunities for expressing yourself, and the Galaxy Z Fold5’s improved wide display experience gives you the tools to create your own masterpiece. You can embrace a new world with the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5, where your days become a canvas for expression and creativity.

Where Design Meets Technology

Smartphones are always in our line of sight. From the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed, your smartphone likely catches your eye throughout the day. This is why both form and function are crucial when it comes to smartphone design. Smartphones inspire us to express ourselves, so our devices should have a strong sense of visual harmony. With this in mind, the designers ensured the aesthetics of the Galaxy Z series could be appreciated from any angle.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 captivate users with balanced and meticulously crafted designs. The seamless fusion of advanced technology and artistic expertise creates flawless forms that evoke both futuristic elements and current trends — leaving lasting impressions.

The Art of Symmetry

The design identity of the Galaxy Z series starts with the symmetry of a foldable phone. While staying true to its iconic form, the new Flex Window on the Galaxy Z Flip5 provides ample opportunity for you to display your personal style. Furthermore, the Galaxy Z Fold5 has been refined with even more detail. The essence of the Galaxy Z series’ iconic grid design is embodied in the perfectly proportionate balance between the device’s display and structure as well as the well-polished exterior.

Progressive Changes in Form

With the new Flex Hinge, the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 now feature a more aesthetically balanced design when folded. The overall depth and weight have been slimmed down, boosting usability and comfort. This enhancement allows these folded devices to be more stable and occupy less space, making them even more portable than before.

Fill Every Moment With Color

The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 are available in a range of colors based on the concept of “Future Nature.” These colors represent an appreciation for nature and hope for the future, meant to inspire us in our daily lives. The back panel’s glossy finish and the metal frames on the side further amplify the aura of these colors. The Galaxy Z Flip5 comes in Mint, Graphite, Cream and Lavender, and the Galaxy Z Fold5 comes in Icy Blue, Phantom Black and Cream. Mint is the newest addition to the Galaxy Z Flip5’s lineup, bringing a refreshed energy to the device. The Galaxy Z Fold5’s newest color, Icy Blue, is inspired by the blue shades found in ancient glaciers.

Four additional colors — Gray, Blue, Green and Yellow — inspired by the concept of “Modern Nature” will be exclusively available for online purchase. These four sleek yet natural tones are paired with a matte, graphite metal frame to fuse modern aesthetics with organic elements.

More Ways To Express Yourself

The Galaxy Z Flip series combines portability and style, creating a whole new smartphone experience. With its compact design, you can easily tuck your entire smartphone into your pockets. What’s more, the expanded Flex Window tears down the limits of expression and usability with more diverse customization options and access to productivity features. Showcasing who you are is now as simple as setting your Galaxy Z Flip5 down on a table for the world to see.

Bigger Canvas, Bolder Expression

With more space, simple layouts and bold objects make a stronger statement. The Galaxy Z Flip5 provides ample space on the Flex Window to empower you to unleash your creativity. You can also match the style of the Flex Window to your Galaxy Watch6 watch face, coordinating a look across your Galaxy devices.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 is capable of so much more when it comes to highlighting your personality. You can customize the Flex Window by choosing from a variety of graphical clocks or frames or by adding widgets to access the information you need quickly and easily. With the new Flex Window, every inch of your screen can be dedicated entirely to you.

Snap, View, Like or Delete

The Galaxy Z Flip5’s selfie capabilities have been upgraded as well. You can access the camera app directly from the Flex Window to take, review and even delete your photos on the spot. It’s easy to switch through camera modes and timers, set dimensions or decide which photos to keep — all through the Flex Window. Picture this: you snap a selfie with portrait mode, zoom in on the small details and mark your favorite shots without ever opening your phone.

All-in-One

The Galaxy Z Flip5’s expanded Flex Window can also streamline any daily routine. On top of the usual Flex Window capabilities, such as checking notifications or accessing quick settings, you can now browse your call and chat history. The full QWERTY keyboard enables you to do more than send suggested replies and emojis. Your whole mobile experience can start and end from your Flex Window.

Complete Customisation

The Galaxy Z Flip5 series’ expansion is more than just customizing your screen. On top of protecting your device, the all-new Flipsuit Case supports a changeable NFC card that lets you match your Flex Window and case designs for more personalization. You can now change your device’s design from front to back, inside and out.

Create Without Boundaries

The Galaxy Z Fold series opened new ways to maximize productivity. For instance, if you frequently travel for work, you can jump on a quick conference call or edit documents on the go without a laptop. The Galaxy Z Fold series has pioneered everyday productivity through robust, big-screen experiences, and now, it’s driving user experiences even further by expanding its features. In particular, the Galaxy Z Fold5’s new design enhances the series by improving its multitasking and widescreen usability. This device is the ideal companion during your otherwise mundane subway ride to work. With Multi Window, you can make the most of your commute by catching up on daily news while simultaneously jotting notes. You can also take advantage of the new multi-touch feature to easily attach files to emails with two-handed Drag and Drop — helping you get things done, wherever you are.

Improved Multi Window Experiences

One of the most powerful features of the Galaxy Z Fold series is Multi Window, which has been enhanced for better productivity. The experimental features offered through Labs in the previous version — Pop-up view, which lets you turn an app into a pop-up window by dragging down the upper right corner, and Split Screen View, which splits your screen when you swipe with two fingers — have now become official One UI features starting with the Galaxy Z Fold5. For instance, if you want to take notes while reading, simply use two fingers to open a Multi Window with a notepad. You can conveniently write down your ideas with easy access to two side-by-side windows on a single screen.

Create Easier and Faster

The Galaxy Z Fold5 also introduces the innovative two-handed Drag and Drop feature — a remarkable addition that elevates multitasking on the big screen. You can use one finger to hold an object and another to interact with other features, delivering a whole new level of efficiency and convenience. For example, press an image in your gallery with one finger and simultaneously use a different hand to bring up a new window and attach that image to an email. When moving an app to another page, just hold down the icon and use your other hand to swipe through the home screen to place it just where you want it. This multi-touch upgrade unlocks huge potential for productivity on the Galaxy Z Fold5.

These efforts to boost productivity have led to even more ways to multitask. Up to four most recently used apps can now be added to the Taskbar, allowing easy transitions between apps. While switching to a different app, you can open the pop-up window to multitask across apps and windows more conveniently than ever before.

Style Meets Comfort

The all-new Slim S Pen Case features a design that improves your experience with the S Pen Fold Edition. The sleeker and slimmer S Pen holder not only helps your phone lie flat, making it effortless to take notes on a table, but it also ensures that you’re able to write with a more comfortable grip. In addition, there is a toggle feature that lets you conveniently attach or detach the S Pen Fold Edition.

The Slim S Pen Cases come in three colors — Icy Blue, Sand and Graphite. To make a bold style statement, Icy Blue and Sand Slim S Pen Cases have been paired with Lime and Apricot S Pen Fold Editions, respectively.

In 2019, the Galaxy Fold revolutionized the smartphone market by pioneering a brand-new category of foldable phones. Every iteration in the series refined foldable technology, captured the essence of the modern era through its design and unfolded new and innovative user experiences.

In 2023, Samsung unveiled the next step in the evolution of the Galaxy Z series and its iconic design identity. With a perfectly balanced grid, a flawless form factor and colors inspired by nature, the design of these new foldable phones raises the bar for all. Now, you can create with passion, express with purpose and fill your life with endless possibilities using the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5.

New mentor on the block

ALAN LIM, a branding and creative veteran who also founded an advertising agency today, has a new mission in life. As a newly-appointed mentor at Saito University College, his mission is to ensure that what is taught is relevant to the industry.

“The business world changes every minute. Our students are taught to hit the ground running. I myself, during the course of my work as creative director, employed a Saito graduate, but he was so in demand that within a short while, he was offered higher pay and left,” said Lim, who believes relevancy is the key word.

“You need a bridge from the University to the workplace. That’s my role as mentor,” added Lim, who recently joined Saito as mentor.

Director of the newly revamped K2 School of Business and Design at Saito University College, Jonson Chong, said, “With all the rapid changes taking place in technology and society today, I believe the future that Saito graduates face is highly unpredictable and more complex and challenging.

“Hence, our mission at K2 School of Business and Knowledge is to make all our graduates future-proof by combining business and design. This is why our programmes are not only designed to equip our graduates with the business know-how but also with the creative skills and courage to take on whatever challenges they may face and come up with innovative solutions confidently,” said Chong, who believes in the quote by the former Vice-Chair of General Electric in America, Beth Comstock.

“What business needs now is design. What design needs now is to make it about business.”

Chong feels it is important to guide Gen Y and Z, who represent the new age of millennials, to embrace knowledge of both disciplines in one degree, and Saito’s Foundation in Business, Diploma in Business Management, Bachelor of Business in Digital Marketing, and Bachelor of Business Marketing incorporate design subjects in the foundation, diploma, and degree business programmes.

“As the gig economy grows, these inter-disciplinary skills are important as millennials these days prefer to either freelance or start their own businesses, having design as well as business management skills is important to succeed in the new world out there,” he said.

Even Lim, who set up his own agency after nearly 30 years in the business of advertising and branding, winning international and local awards, said it was time to build a bridge between graduates and industry, making them more relevant and better prepared in the employment sector.

“The main reason for the re-vamped syllabus is for students to experience the power of two degrees in one degree; it prepares students with the skills of the future by incorporating functional, key elements of both streams to nurture holistic graduates.

“So whether Saito students are aiming to be a driver of innovation, owner of a creative agency, or leader of business and social change, the degree from K2 School of Business and Design will equip them with the necessary skills to succeed,” he said.

Lim is fully aware of the importance of industry exposure, and students at K2 experience both, learning from both lecturers and industry experts.

“At the K2 School, different Hubs have been created, and one such example is the Technology Hub with industry partners, where students are trained by industry partners and learn the tools and tricks of the trade in broadcasting, video-making, digital learning, as well as building online business platforms,” explained Lim, who, as a mentor feels this aspect is one of the most important of the programmes.

Chong feels that with more and more millennials opening up businesses, especially digital-based ones, it is important for them to anticipate critical trends that impact businesses. This is possible with the Sustainability Hub.

“With the growing focus on ESG, the Sustainability Hub is designed to develop diverse perspectives and problem-solving skills and keep climate change and social issues in mind,” added Chong, who had seen the most talented graduates not be able to run successful businesses due to a lack of awareness of current issues and trends.

For those who signed up at Saito University College, the students would be entitled to attend a “Kursus Tiktok Influencer’” at no cost, where they would be trained to join the world of social media as successful TikTok Influencers.

Unlocking SME growth under Belanjawan 2023

PETALING JAYA: In presenting the first budget of his Unity Government in February themed Developing Malaysia MADANI, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government is committed to protecting the livelihood of the rakyat, upholding integrity, and enhancing a caring and compassionate society.

“Belanjawan MADANI reflects the principles of accountability and a pure value system that can address current challenges, including the highly uncertain global economic situation,” he said.

Micro and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), among the hardest hit during the Covid-19 pandemic, came under the spotlight as the government announced a raft of measures to nurse them back on their feet.

“There is great importance placed on micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) and how they contribute to the people, therefore the government continues to support the viability of businesses and their potential to grow,” said Anwar who is also the Finance Minister.

“The government is aware that there are still businesses that are affected by the pandemic, especially MSMEs. Belanjawan 2023 will ensure local MSMEs are once again competitive and able to increase their business capacity because various facilities will be made available to support them.”

The government has set out a comprehensive list of measures to help encourage business owners and entrepreneurs to increase capacity and provide relief.

As one of the many incentives for MSMEs, the government lowered the rate of taxable income to 15% from 17% for the first RM150,000 in revenue. The rate for the remaining taxable income will be maintained at 17% and 24% respectively.

This would benefit more than 150,000 MSMEs and involve tax savings of up to RM3,000 per business to ease their financial burden.

MSME entrepreneurs will be provided with access to financing facilities through Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) and Tekun Nasional (TEKUN), with funds totalling RM1.7 billion.

The funds will be used specifically to benefit women and youth entrepreneurs from underprivileged backgrounds.

For SMEs, BNM is providing almost RM10 billion to reduce the financial burden they face and to encourage their business development.

Funds under BNM are aimed to provide financing at reasonable costs for SMEs in all economic sectors. Some funds have also been enhanced to provide relief and to support the recovery of SMEs.

The assistance will be channelled through participating financial institutions comprising banks, prescribed development financial institutions and the Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia Berhad (CGC).

Along with the RM10 billion provided by BNM, Syarikat Jaminan Pembiayaan Perniagaan Berhad (SJPP) will guarantee up to RM20 billion in SME loans.

In the spirit of inclusivity under Malaysia MADANI, SMEs in all economic sectors will be able to secure government guarantees of 80% to 90%.

Any credit company with a valid money lending license under the Ministry of Local Government Development will be eligible to participate in the scheme and, it is open to any cooperatives registered with the Malaysia Co-operative Societies Commission (SKM).

The decision to expand guarantees to financing by non-banking financial institutions is made to specifically benefit small businesses that lack the funds to apply for loans.

Small and medium businesses that are struggling are urged to seize the opportunity to benefit from the financial schemes in Belanjawan 2023.

Interested individuals who wish to gather more information or apply for benefits can visit belanjawan.mof.gov.my/manfaat/.

Belanjawan 2023 provides countless benefits to support SMEs who suffered throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Other than tax reductions and guarantees on loans, the Government has implemented subsidy schemes for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to help them compete again post-pandemic.

The subsidy programmes will be monitored by the Unit for the Implementation and Coordination of National Agencies on Economic Stimulus Package (Laksana).

The government has always prioritised the interest of MSMEs and one way of achieving this is through subsidies. They are important to help MSMEs get back on their feet and be competitive post-pandemic.

Through Belanjawan 2023 and other programmes, the government will provide various types of subsidies to a wide range of sectors.

The first subsidy provided will be targeted towards exporters through the Exporters’ Development Incentive Scheme (SIP2) which subsidises financing rates by 1.5% for financing of up to RM 10 million for a tenure of seven years.

Wages and training fees are mostly subsidised for employment-related and upskilling and reskilling programmes. Programmes like Kerjaya Madani and Program Daya Kerja will offer wage subsidies and incentives for differently abled persons, the hardcore poor, paroled individuals, and other targeted groups.

There will also be incentives given to employers who have hired graduates from technical and vocational education and training (TVET) backgrounds through employment transition (Kerjaya TVET).

An electric bill subsidy will be implemented, which maintains the current electric tariff for all domestic users and SMEs, but large corporations other than those in the food and agriculture sector will be increased.

A subsidised diesel control system will be implemented by the government to reduce leakages, and there will be increased enforcement efforts by government agencies and industry players.

The implementation will be carried out in stages and focus on ensuring an affordable cost of living, especially for those in the B40 group.

The government will continue to upgrade the cooking oil stabilization system (eCOSS) which will manage the subsidy quota and monitor sales of cooking oil across all supply chains.

Furthermore, the Malaysian government devised a comprehensive strategic plan which focuses on strengthening communications infrastructure, cybersecurity, and fostering the growth of the digital economy.

The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) under the Ministry of Communications and Digital will be at the forefront of driving Malaysia’s digital economy forward and its purpose is to accelerate the country’s digital transformation.

Through Malaysia Digital (MD), a national strategic initiative launched in 2022 to succeed Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) Malaysia, we have identified nine promoted sectors presenting high growth potential, opportunity, and importance in driving Malaysia’s next transformation in the digital economy.

Cybersecurity is recognized as a vital tech enabler and MDEC has prioritised “Cybersecurity and Data Privacy” in the formation of MDEC’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Roadmap.

Cybersecurity plays an important role in Malaysia’s digital economy development, especially in fostering trust, driving innovation, and sustaining the growth of the digital landscape.

The digital economy contributes 22.6% to the country’s GDP and is projected to grow to 25.5% by 2025. Cybersecurity failure will derail the objectives of the national Digital Economy blueprint.

It is crucial to approach this holistically at the national level via the Malaysia Cybersecurity strategy.”

MDEC will take Malaysia’s Digital Economy forward by drafting four initiatives to develop the Malaysian cybersecurity industry.

These initiatives include nurturing home-based cybersecurity companies, driving SME awareness programmes, creating a cybersecurity workforce, and collaborating with key stakeholders of the digital economy by formulating progressive policies and industry best practices.

To nurture home-based cybersecurity companies, MDEC, in collaboration with National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA), will initiate the National Cybersecurity Innovation Challenge Programme (Cyber100).

Awareness is also provided by MDEC through programmes such as Digital Up, a reskilling and upskilling incentive, and Let’s Learn Digital, an initiative that provides free training for digital skills.

Benefits from Belanjawan 2023: No woman left behind

KUALA LUMPUR: In a progressive and inclusive society, women’s empowerment plays a pivotal role in driving positive change and fostering sustainable development.

Recognising the significant contributions of women in all aspects of life, the government has taken a momentous step by introducing measures under Belanjawan 2023 that focuses on uplifting and safeguarding the fairer sex, especially those in the B40 group in urban and rural areas.

The wide range of measures tailored to support mothers and single mothers aim to provide relief to the needs of women who are the cornerstone of Malaysia.

The core of Belanjawan 2023’s objectives is to ensure women empowerment and protect their rights and welfare.

Whether it is providing financial relief, enhancing safety, offering professional training, or promoting entrepreneurship, the government is dedicated to uplifting the lives of women nationwide.

The initiatives introduced under Belanjawan 2023 have already begun making a positive impact on the lives of women.

One of the key measures is to encourage women to return to work after giving birth by amending the Social Security Organisation (Socso) Act to allow for a grant equal to 80% of the insured employee’s salary.

A total of RM290 million per year have been allocated under this policy and rough estimates show that over 130,000 women who return to work after childbirth will benefit from this grant.

The government’s further commitment to fostering women’s entrepreneurship is evident through initiatives like the women’s business financing fund.

The fund will enable women micro-entrepreneurs to apply for up to RM235 million (cumulative total) in financing from Bank Rakyat, Bank Simpanan Nasional, Tekun Nasional and Majlis Amanah Rakyat.

Building Safer Communities

Belanjawan 2023 also took a strong stand against gender-based violence and harassment at work, public places and the home.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the Tribunal for Anti-Sexual Harassment is part of the advocacy programme to empower women to fight against harassment and abuse and ensure justice prevails.

A fund of RM10 million went to the establishment of the tribunal while RM8.3 million will be used to open one-stop Local Social Support Centres.

These centres will help address domestic violence and social problems by offering guidance, counselling sessions, immediate relief to those in need.

Even the police is establishing a specialised unit under its D11 unit (Sexual, Women and Children Investigation Division) to be more aggressive in investigating sexual abuse cases involving women and children.

In addition, the government recognises the invaluable role of mothers in shaping the future generation and will extend financial support in the form of tax reliefs for medical treatment expenditures.

Starting from the assessment year 2023, the tax relief limit for medical treatment expenditures will be raised from RM8,000 to RM10,000.

In addition, the scope of this relief will also be expanded to cover the cost of intervention treatment for children with developmental disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome and specific learning disabilities, up to a maximum of RM4,000.

There will be additional tax incentives for employers who establish childcare facilities within their premises and tax relief for childcare centre fees.

These measures reduce the financial burden on mothers and encourage a nurturing environment for their children.

Belanjawan 2023 further demonstrates its commitment to women’s health by subsidising mammograms and cervical cancer screening programmes, aiming to enhance early detection and prevention.

The subsidised mammograms will be offered to women aged between 35 and 70. Households with total incomes of less than RM10,000 will enjoy a full subsidy while those with more than RM10,000 will receive a RM50 subsidy.

Women aged between 30 and 65 will also receive free HPV DNA test screening kits at selected Klinik Nur Sejahtera and National Population and Family Development Board outreach programmes.

These measures in Belanjawan 2023 stand as a testament to the government’s dedication to women’s empowerment and the advancement of gender equality in Malaysia.

By creating awareness and encouraging women to utilise the initiatives, it is hoped that no woman will be left behind in the journey towards a more inclusive and prosperous society.

The application process is also user-friendly and hassle-free, to ensure eligible women can quickly access the aid they require.

Women who have yet to tap the initiatives are urged to seize the opportunities provided.

#LotussLebihMurah campaign targets to cut prices

KUALA LUMPUR: The rising cost of living has impacted Malaysians and their ability to buy household groceries at affordable prices, either due to higher logistics expenses, labour costs or even geopolitical situations. In view of this, Lotus’s Malaysia has stepped in to give Malaysians more value when they shop at their stores.

At the launch of the #LotussLebihMurah campaign at Lotus’s Kepong Product Assessment Centre, Lotus’s Malaysia customer executive director Vivian Yap said: “In an effort to provide customers with more choices for affordable and quality products, Lotus’s has slashed prices of over 3,500 grocery items, branded and as well as Lotus’s own brand, by up to 37% and the total investment of RM50 million would be absorbed by Lotus’s.

“The campaign, which includes many necessities among Malaysian household groceries, includes rice, cooking oil, instant noodles, canned sardines and mackerel, seasoning sauces, coffee and tea, margarine and butter, cheese, yoghurt, icecream, frozen food, snacks, biscuits, chocolates, diapers, children milk formula, feminine hygiene care and even pet food.

“What previously could be acquired for RM50 before may not be sufficient now, in view of rising prices.

“Lotus’s own brand will be 15% to 20% cheaper and all products were tested at the Product Assessment Centre by trained experts to ensure that quality and the halal standard of their products is maintained,” said Yap, adding that sustainability was a strong factor in the manufacturing process of Lotus’s products.

Yap said customers would be able to enjoy all these cheaper prices at all 66 Lotus’s stores nationwide, in addition to Lotus’s Shop Online and also Lotus’s official stores on Lazada, Shopee, foodpanda and Grab.

With the purchase of groceries at Lotus’s stores, customers will be rewarded with My Lotus’s points, that can be used to pay for their shopping anytime, either in-store or online, to help reduce the cost of groceries.

At the same time, Lotus’s food courts located across the country will be offering a selection of Menu Rahmah meals at the price of RM5, so shoppers can dine at affordable prices.

Yap added that Lotus’s also offers food court operators that are offering Menu Rahmah a 10% discount on all key ingredients, so their prices could be kept low and affordable for their customers.

“The campaign is in line with the government’s initiative to bring quality and affordability to Malaysians, at a time when it is most needed.”
