Malaysians shopped value-based this Ramadan and Hari Raya

KUALA LUMPUR: Shopee continues to observe an upward trend towards value-based shopping behaviour throughout Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri with a 2 times increase of searches containing keywords such as ‘eco-friendly’, ‘Halal’ and ‘sustainable’ in 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

Halal-related terms were the most popular searches with keywords such as ‘Halal’, ‘buatan Muslim’ ‘Muslim made’, ‘Halal product’, and ‘Muslim Halal product’ searched over 671,000 times on the platform. This was over a 100% increase in searches compared to last year when the same keywords were searched over 325,000 times throughout Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Value-based shopping behaviour was also observed in gifting and when users were preparing their homes for Hari Raya. Given that gifting is a common culture during Hari Raya season, searches for more traditional gift wrappers also saw a 1.9 times increase. Keywords such as ‘bakul rotan’, ‘kain batik’, ‘sarong cloth’, ‘kain sarong’ and ‘batik cloth’ were used over 61,000 times in 2023 compared to the previous year. This is aligned with the batik-inspired Raya gift boxes trend that started in 2021 and continued to be even more popular this year.

Kenneth Soh, Head of Marketing at Shopee Malaysia said, “Value-based shopping is about supporting Made in Malaysia products in underserved communities, and oftentimes rural sellers who are authentic and provide great services. Many times, it’s about paying close attention to what a seller stands for and does, and checking out what the influencers and affiliates say about the brand, to ensure an alignment of values. At Shopee, we continue to innovate, making online shopping personalised, engaging, hyper-localised and easily accessible through in-house technology and data.”

With Malaysians being hospitable in nature and open houses being a popular culture, Shopee users chose smarter home appliances to make their homes more comfortable for visiting guests. However, this year, comfort is also associated with energy-saving when keywords such as ‘inverter aircond’, ‘LED bulb’, ‘mentol LED’, ‘mesin basuh jimat air’, ‘eco-friendly washing machine’, ‘eco-friendly fridge’ and ‘peti sejuk jimat elektrik’ being searched 76.8% more than last year.

Evidently, searches for cleaning products also increased in line with the demand for more natural solutions. Search terms such as ‘Natural cleaning’, ‘natural cleaner’, ‘eco friendly house cleaner’, ‘eco friendly detergent’, ‘eco friendly floor cleaner’, ‘homemade cleaning supplies’, ‘homemade cleaner’, ‘chemical-free house cleaner’ and ‘chemical-free cleaner’ rose in popularity this year by 1.3 times.

The search for Halal and value-based products went hand-in-hand as users were more supportive of local sellers outside the big cities. The top five cities are Hulu Langat, Selangor; Gombak, Selangor; Seremban, Negeri Sembilan; Kinta, Perak; and Melaka Tengah, Melaka based on items sold, showcasing the true #ShopeeSapotLokal spirit.

During the holy month of Ramadan, over 80,000 Shopee users came together to support the Bakul Rahmah initiative under Shopee Gives Back through Shopee Farm in their efforts to give back to society. With this, Shopee was able to donate 20,000kg worth of rice to The Lost Food Project and Kechara Soup Kitchen. This effort has supported a total of 4,000 underserved families across Kuala Lumpur and Pahang.

MGB strong bounce in Q1FYE2023

SELANGOR: MGB Berhad (“MGB” or the “Group”) (a subsidiary of LBS Bina Group Berhad), a construction and property development solutions provider, today announced its first quarter (Q1) results for the financial year ending 31 December 2023 (“Q1FYE2023”).

For the quarter under review, MGB registered a revenue of RM 177.76 million with profit after tax of RM 12.24 million as compared to RM 6.81 million in the preceding year corresponding quarter.

The strong results were mainly attributable to the steady contribution from several sizeable projects such as Residensi Bintang and Mercu Jalil at Bukit Jalil as well as Ritma Perdana and Melodi Perdana at Alam Perdana whereby the projects are targeted to be completed by FYE2023.

To add on, the Group successfully closed and finalised accounts for completed projects previously with major subcontractors at a further competitive price which then improved the overall project cost and added to its earnings.

The construction and trading business segment remained as the Group’s key revenue stream which contributed revenue of RM168.64 million.

The segment Profit Before Tax (“PBT”) for the current financial period was RM13.40 million as compared to the preceding year corresponding quarter of RM10.91 million.

Leveraging on our in-house well-developed and matured Industrialized Building System (IBS) precast production, thus allowing us to reduce the reliance on labour, which is now at scarce and high cost, MGB was able to continue to report better margin.

It is worth highlighting that our manufacturing of precast concrete products business has performed well with an internal revenue of approximately RM14.26 million for this quarter and having 5 projects on-hand to complete.

The improved performance is also attributed to the property development segment.

The newly launched of Idaman Melur, Cybersouth totalling 1,448 units, as well as rapid progression of phase 3 and 4 of Laman Bayu, Batu Pahat are the catalysts for the segment’s good showing, which contributed a revenue of RM 9.12 million as compared to RM4.58 million in the preceding year corresponding quarter.

The segment’s PBT for the current quarter was recorded at RM3.06 million as compared to the preceding year corresponding quarter RM0.67 million.

MGB Executive Vice Chairman Tan Sri Ir Lim Hock San, commented, “We are delighted to kick-start 2023 on the right footing. This is the strongest quarter performance for MGB since the company’s establishment.

With 20 on-going projects from both our construction and property development segment, we are in steady ground as MGB’s top line seeks to generate revenue of approximately RM4 billion in the coming years. This is on the back of our outstanding construction order book which stands at a healthy RM1.78 billion and an estimated Gross Development Value of RM2.36 billion under our property development segment.

Looking ahead, we will focus on the execution of our projects to deliver on-time and in a cost-efficient manner while maintaining its quality. The response to our Rumah Idaman MBI projects have been very encouraging and we are eager to launch the remainder of the projects in the upcoming months.

Notwithstanding that, we expect a healthy replenishment of construction projects to keep us busy and will continue our momentum in securing more Rumah Idaman MBI development projects through collaboration with Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) (“MBI”).

We are cautiously optimistic of our performance for the remainder of 2023 as we are wary of the effect of external factors, such as interest rate hikes. However, it may not significantly impact our financial performance because of our low net gearing ratio of 0.11. We are confident in our ability to mitigate any adverse impact which may arise from potential external factors and continue to deliver sustainable growth in the coming years to our shareholders.”

Ensuring Safety from Mosquitoes: Protecting Homes, Kindergartens, and Schools

The danger being faced in homes by young children, adults and senior citizens is increasing.

Mosquitoes are not only invading homes, but all the most popular habitats of human beings.

Why are they so dangerous?

Mosquitoes are the carriers of diseases and their most popular habitats are schools, homes, kindergartens, offices and they are not easily eradicated because they are tiny, and can fly and hide anywhere.

Today they are the new scourge, as they infect humans with the Zika virus, yellow fever, dengue, malaria and other diseases. Especially today, dengue is on the rise in Malaysia, with the Ministry of Health (MOH) reporting an increase of 212% in the number of dengue cases, in comparison to last year.

The most at risk are young children as they are unaware of the danger.

“Mosquitos are perhaps the most dangerous animals in the world,” said Omar Akbari, PhD, an assistant professor of entomology at the University of California, Riverside in the US.

Mosquitoes are hard to fight and the use of high level insecticides and other chemical based pesticides are bad for humans and so a more effective method of attracting and trapping mosquitoes is needed.

Today, a breakthrough solution may be made available; SHARP AIR PURIFIER WITH MOSQUITO CATCHER can prevent or reduce the danger of mosquito-borne diseases in kindergartens, offices and even schools.

The new 3 in 1 SHARP AIR PURIFER WITH MOSQUITO CATCHER exhibits 3 outstanding features, which guarantee your purchase is value for money, it emanates a UV light which attracts mosquitoes which die, as they are caught on the glue sheet, a natural mosquito catcher in the PURIFER!

Why is it value for money? It NOT only destroys mosquitoes but also eliminates odors and destroys allergens and moulds in the air, especially viruses which can infect and cause health problems.

This new technological breakthrough will make a difference in the lives of not only children but adults craving for a good night’s sleep, and apart from a good night’s sleep, children can also focus on their studies, without fear of being bitten.

This is especially important for young children, with high allergies and lung related problems, who can now breathe easier and be at ease, with cleaner air.

This clean air ensures a more conducive environment for those who live in small apartments and condominiums, children in kindergartens, schools and classrooms as the air will circulate faster and better.

What are the outstanding features of SHARP AIR PURIFER with an inbuilt MOSQUITO CATCHER?

• Advanced PLASMACLUSTER ION Technology emitting positive and negative IONS, which suppresses bacteria, viruses, allergens, and molds

Join the Heineken Ghosted Bar experience

Heineken is on a mission to encourage Malaysians to stop ghosting their friends. This is why the brand recently launched ‘The Ghosted Bar’, a campaign encouraging Malaysians to #WorkResponsibly. Based on a recent YouGov survey commissioned by Heineken, it was discovered that 41% of employees in Malaysia have ‘ghosted’ their friends due to work obligations, whilst 91% of Malaysians believe that having a good social life helps with managing stress levels at work.

The campaign is brought to life through a series of ‘Ghosted Bar’ outlet experiences, in which Heineken hopes to encourage Malaysian employees to prioritise a better work-life balance. The outlet experiences will be taking place at selected bars across Malaysia for a month-long period. At the experiences, Heineken offers engaging activities that bring to life the #WorkResponsibly notion while allowing friends to reconnect with one another.

Upon arriving at the participating outlets, guests can use the Ghosted Bar Command Centre to invite a friend that has been ghosting them to come to the outlet. If the friend accepts, they will receive an exclusive #WorkResponsibly Grab code for the ride over. In the meantime, at the bar, guests can monitor their friend’s ETA and approximate location via the Command Centre. Upon arrival, the entire group gets to enjoy a complimentary bucket of Heineken as well as a unique Heineken serving ritual experience.

The excitement doesn’t end there, as they will also be entitled to take part in the Heineken Live Draw where they stand to win a variety of prizes worth a total of RM100,000. Speaking of prizes, ‘Good Vibes Festival Squad Goals’ tickets, exclusive Heineken Dining experiences and even exclusive Heineken Private Birthday Party experiences, are up for grabs! What’s more, guests and their ‘unghosted’ friends can also capture their experience at the Unghosted Moments photo booth, and even share it on social media.

“Heineken wants to encourage working responsibly by reminding employees to not to ‘ghost’ their friends because of work. We hope that this campaign inspires employees to clock off on time and prioritise their social life. With the month-long outlet activations, the brand aims to get fans to reach out to ‘ghosting’ friends to share the Heineken ‘Ghosted Bar’ experience together,” said Willemijn Sneep, Head of Marketing at Heineken Malaysia Berhad.

Honours for Malaysian siblings at 2023 Desaru Coast Multisport Festival

PETALING JAYA: The increasing mass appeal of triathlon in Malaysia was showcased through the 2023 Desaru Coast Multisport Festival (DCMF), which witnessed over 1,250 participations from more than 50 countries who turned up over the weekend.

The three-day Multisport Festival featured a host of events for beginners to seasoned athletes who participated in various events, including the IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast, 5150 Triathlon Desaru Coast, Desaru Coast Sprint Triathlon and the IRONKIDS Desaru Coast.

This year’s event was made even more appealing by the fact that there were 55 qualification slots to the 2023 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Lahti, Finland (26 & 27 August 2023).

25 of those slots were reserved primarily for women, which highlighted the intent of the organisers to encourage participation amongst budding female triathletes.

With so many world championships slots to offer, the IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast race on Sunday was hugely engaging, with nearly 900 participants starting out on a 1.9km swim from The Westin Desaru Coast Resort. They soon transitioned to a 90km bike course along the long straight, shaded roads before finishing off with a 21km run that culminated with the finish line back at The Westin Desaru Coast Resort.

Malaysian siblings Daniel John Chen and Esther Joy Chen, who had only just recovered from a Covid-19 bout last week, dominated the course as the fastest Malaysians.

Esther, the 2022 SEA Games Triathlete who beat her older brother with a finishing time of 05:03:09, admitted she didn’t know what to expect on her debut IRONMAN 70.3 race. “I couldn’t have asked for a better performance in my first race. I didn’t expect to do this well and to outrun my brother, especially after recovering from Covid-19 a week ago.”

Daniel meanwhile finished with a time of 05:03:44.

Harry Sinclair was crowned the overall fastest male finisher after the Australian turned in a strong and consistent performance to cross the finish line in first place under scorching conditions in Desaru. The 26-year-old said this was the most challenging race he’d ever endured.

“This was a big mental game and I had to keep grinding. I am glad I got it done, this is the hardest race I have ever done. It was a tactical race, I was at the front and I had to keep pushing to get the win,” said Sinclair.

Choo Ling Er meanwhile continued to make Malaysia her happy hunting ground. The Singaporean who won last year’ IRONMAN Langkawi 70.3 came out tops in Desaru as the fastest overall female finisher with a time of 04:49:52

“It was a good day for me. The plan was to swim steady, go hard on the bike and hold on to the run for the win. The weather was brutal, but I’m from Singapore and the last three weeks we have experienced a heatwave so it was a good acclimatization for me,” she said.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast oldest female finisher was Michiyo Sekiya, 62, from Japan who finished at 07:12:13, whereas the oldest male finisher was Japan-based Michael Turoczy, 70, with a finish time of 07:54:25.

Another notable participant included 2023 SEA Games Duathlete Tahira Najmunisaa who finished 3rd in her age group of 30-39 with a finish time of 05:31:11

While the IRONMAN 70.3 delivered as the marquee event, the fringe events such as the Sprint Triathlon and 5150 Triathlon also proved a valuable experience for participants who wanted to get a first-hand IRONMAN experience.

The Desaru Coast Sprint Triathlon started out with a 750m swim, before transitioning to a 20km bike and finishing off with a 5km run.

The 5150 Triathlon Desaru Coast provided a more challenging experience with a 1.5km swim, before participants headed out on a 40km bike ride and completed with a 10km run.

For this Olympic distance category, former national triathlete Thiang Choong Yoong finished as fastest overall male finisher and fastest Malaysian with a time of 02:19:28, while Australian Leanne Szeto finished as the top female by clocking 2:24:13. Effarezan Abdul Rahman meanwhile took home the honours as the fastest Malaysian female with a time of 3:13:50.

The IRONKIDS also provided plenty of fun for more than 70 kids who participated, with a comprehensive crew of marshals and security personnel ensuring a safe zone for the children to swim, bike and run.

This year’s Desaru Coast Multisport Festival also served up an array of side activities for the 1,200 plus participants to enjoy throughout the weekend. It included the Milo x Wavvy Hub Surfskate Clinic, 5 Club Speed Golf and the Desaru Coast Festival Village for the weekends’ festival go-ers.

IRONMAN Asia Managing Director Jeff Edwards said yet another successful series in Desaru only highlights the significance of this venue as a pivotal race in the IRONMAN calendar.

“The success of back-to-back IRONMAN races here in Desaru Coast shows what an important event this is not just for Asia, but globally as well. We saw a great representation from not just Malaysians, but also triathletes from all over the world and it is an indication this race will only grow bigger and more successful,” he said.

Desaru Coast Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Roslina Arbak pledged the venue’s commitment to hosting the IRONMAN.

“Desaru Coast had the immense pleasure to host this three-day international sporting gala at our integrated destination resort for the second time. It was heartening for us to watch guests enjoy not only the races but also the festivities and activities throughout the three days.

“For this reason, we are determined to continue growing the festival. In continuing our commitment to host the Desaru Coast Multisport Festival presented by IRONMAN we hope that in the years to come Desaru Coast and the state of Johor become synonymous with the IRONMAN brand in the international circuit, making sports tourism a collective pillar of success for us,” said Chief Executive Officer, Roslina Arbak.

ACCA remains top choice worldwide for a career in accountancy

KUALA LUMPUR: ACCA retains its popularity as top choice for aspiring accountants seeking a professional qualification, recognized internationally for its quality, which can be completed through self-study or in a college.

Apart from its international recognition, the Chartered Certified Accountant qualification attracts high salaries, and equips the individual with all the competencies required of professional accountants and auditors.

As one of the oldest accounting bodies, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), founded in 1904, achieved a milestone of 700,000 members and students worldwide in 2017, including 503,000 students in 178 countries.

Why do students aspire to qualify as Chartered Certified Accountants?

Apart from the high salary packages offered for fully qualified accountants, especially those with professional certification, the other advantage of being ACCA qualified, is the ability to work in other areas of finance, banking, auditing, financial accounting, taxation and law as well as business management.

ACCA, as a unique professional accounting body, supports its students and members with unique pathways to help chart their career path through the ACCA Career Navigator. The specialist skills needed are highlighted in the Career Navigator portal, such as audit and assurance, advisory and consultancy, financial reporting, risk management, among other skills.

These skills can be continuously updated via Continuous Professional Development (CPD), for which points are awarded annually. These CPD and development opportunities are made available on the ACCA portals.

ACCA also supports CPD for its professional accountants as well as those who have joined other fields in finance, law or tax in the form of work based learning, research, project work, consulting with experts, studying for additional qualifications and online learning.

This further adds to the long term employability of ACCA graduates.

Other support provided to members can be accessed through ACCA Careers, a global employability site connecting ACCA members with potential employers, also webinars and Professional Insight reports to keep accounting and finance professionals informed of local, regional and global trends, one of the most recent being the Global Talents Trends Survey 2023.

Being one of their largest studies conducted across the accountancy profession, the new annual Global Talent Trends Survey 2023, provides a unique and vital view of how people feel about working as an ACCA professional.

Over 8,400 professional accountants from 148 countries, including Malaysia were asked about their concerns regarding work in the future as well as their aspirations for their careers.

The survey also addressed and assessed key workplace issues such as employee engagement, wellbeing, and attitudes to technology adoption.

ACCA’s Global Talents Trends Survey (GTTS) 2023 revealed that a career in accountancy remained a smart choice for those seeking long term career prospects and possibilities to continually acquire new skills.

The survey also indicated that ACCA as a professional qualification was attractive and in demand due to cross-sectoral and international mobility. As an in-demand qualification, it provided job security in turbulent times.

ACCA is largely recognized by top major international organizations such as the United Nations, World Bank and other major finance institutions worldwide.

“Career development and remuneration are the top two attraction factors to an organization, yet they are also the two areas that have the most influence on employees’ decision to leave,” said Jamie Lyon, Head of Skills, Sectors and Technology ACCA.

The security, reward and opportunities for ACCA qualified individuals remain highly attractive, with long-term career prospects for accountancy and finance related careers.

Andrew Lim, Portfolio Head, ACCA Maritime South East Asia said,

“Attracting the next generation of talent to Malaysia’s accountancy profession is vital to healthy economies. This survey ensures the voices of those studying and working in the profession are heard, and that the profession helps create a working environment where today’s professionals thrive and where tomorrow’s talent wants to be,” he said.
