Lotus’s Strategy in Mitigating Climate Impact

KUALA LUMPUR: Lotus’s Malaysia, one of Malaysia’s leading retailers, realises the risk and impact of climate change which is likely to intensify. For this reason, they are determined to play a part in reducing the impact it’s operations have on the climate.

Towards this aim, Lotus’s is determined to align with its’ parent company, Charoen Pokhphand Group’s (CP Group’s) ambitions to become carbon neutral by 2030. Driven by this ambition, Lotus’s aligns it’s climate related efforts with not only United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also other globally recognised standards, such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the Paris Agreement.

These globally recognised standards allow Lotus’s to initiate strategic measures and track their progress towards achievement of climate goals by 2030.

Lotus’s environmental management strategy aims to enhance energy efficiency to reduce environmental impact. This multi-pronged strategy ranges from the selection of efficient and high-performance operational equipment in their stores, right up to the increase in clean energy mix via solar panel installations.

Kathleen Teh, Energy Manager at Lotus’s said, “My job as energy manager includes the implementation of our energy efficiency strategy, driven by our purpose of moving towards carbon neutrality while saving operational costs.

“Our milestones include a 20% increase in efficiency in our refrigeration units and a reduction in refrigeration down-time, allowing us to benefit from cost savings and operational resilience.”

Overall, Lotus’s Malaysia has achieved a 40% reduction in carbon emissions, contributing to CP Group’s carbon neutrality targets by 2030.

According to Sanjay Menon, the Sustainability Manager at Lotus’s, the company is diligently working towards aligning its overall sustainability strategies with internationally recognised standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD)

“In the long term, the aim remains to operationalise sustainability within the organisation in line with the company’s aspiration to be recognised as a sustainable brand, creating value for our stakeholders through positive environment and social impact.

“Increasing our renewable energy mix helps Lotus’s reduce carbon emissions. This puts us on a clear path towards our mid-to-long term aspiration of achieving recognition for our climate related efforts from international bodies such as the CPD, formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project,” said Sanjay.

In the long-term, Lotus’s has recently entered a 20 year Power Purchase Agreement with Altervim Co Ltd to install an additional 22 solar photovoltaic panels across it’s stores in Malaysia, further strengthening it’s position as a sustainable retailer.

Gardenia bakeries spreads the blessings of Ramadan

KUALA LUMPUR: In upholding its philosophy of “Always With You”, Gardenia Bakeries (KL) Sdn Bhd, through its Cahaya Ramadan programme, is distributing 25,000 loaves of its flagship, Gardenia Original Classic 400g white bread at 20 mosques across the peninsular.

This programme represents Gardenia’s third annual campaign since 2021, with newer locations each year.

The Gardenia Cahaya Ramadan programme with its slogan “Sinar Keberkatan Dalam Setiap Kebaikan”, was initiated to lighten the load for the underprivileged, particularly during Ramadan.

The pandemic has left a damaging impact, leaving in its trail financially strapped people. More than 20% from the M20 group are struggling in the B40 category. In light of this, Gardenia Bakeries is taking every possible step to always be there for Malaysians and this programme is one such initiative.

The Gardenia Cahaya Ramadan programme culminated at a “buka puasa” event in SMK Seri Pantai in Bangsar South, with the families of 50 underprivileged school children. In addition to receiving RM200 duit raya each, they were also presented with RM200 worth of groceries such as rice, nasi himpit, milk, sugar, kuih raya, other festive treats and much more. Gardenia Bakeries hopes that by providing the cash assistance and provisions, they can bring more joy to this group especially during the upcoming Syawal celebrations.

The funds for these groceries were raised from the sale of the Gardenia Always With You RM1 Sandwich, at LRT stations in the capital city in the first quarter of 2023. 10,000 sandwiches were sold during the campaign. There were also cash contributions from Gardenia Bakeries.

Magnum’s community support program provides financial aid to needy individuals

KUALA LUMPUR: Magnum’s commitment to supporting the needy and less fortunate in society is demonstrated through its “Magnum Cares” Community Support program, which responds to the needs of disadvantaged individuals in the communities it serves.

Recently, Vice President 2 - Regional Head, Selangor and East Coast, Lim See Chin, handed over donation cheques totaling RM4,500 to three beneficiaries from Kuala Lumpur to alleviate their financial burdens.

The program provided RM1,500 in aid to each recipient: Thien Ka Yen (55 years old, from Kepong), Nirmala S. Sangaralingam (44 years old, from Jinjang Utara), and Karuppiah Vellaisamy (71 years old, from Jalan San Peng).

Ka Yen was left with a nerve injury in his upper limbs and has been using a wheelchair for transportation since a car accident in Sabah in 1988, while Nirmala and Karuppiah are both receiving weekly dialysis treatment due to end-stage renal failure.

Joint health care ambassador GLY has successfully launched a “Let’s MOVEON GLY 3v3 Badminton Showdown”

THE 3V3 badminton tournament, “Let’s MOVEON GLY 3V3 Badminton Showdown”, coorganised by Malaysia’s food technology brand “Wellous” and sports resource website,

“Wellsport” was successfully launched on April 15th 2023 at Vanity Atrium, in Sunway Velocity Mall.

The focus was on joint health and promoting parent-child communication, and the organiser, Olympic silver medallist Goh Liu Ying said that it was the second time a 3V3 badminton tournament had been organised.

Goh said holding such an event in a mall held many challenges, as the uncontrollable lighting and wind direction made the game more challenging as it affected the player’s ability to maintain concentration.

“It is a rare sporting event, and it is a badminton tournament that combines singles, doubles and 3V3 forms,” said Goh, who had been involved in a variety of badminton activities since her retirement from competitive badminton.

Even though 3V3 had not entered international professional badminton tournaments, Goh said she was enthusiastic about the tournament and current national badminton players, Ng Tze Yong, Goh Jin Wei and Shevon Jemie Lai had participated in the event at Sunway Velocity Mall.

At the media interview, Goh said she was optimistic that Chen Tan Jie and Toh Ee Wei, members of the young mixed doubles team would be given the opportunity to compete and qualify for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.

“Currently, three or four mixed doubles teams in China, who are co-operating to qualify for the Olympic Games and foster healthy competition throughout the Paris Olympic points cycle. This is a positive development, perhaps everyone will do better as a result,” she said.

In relation to upcoming major tournaments, Including the Cambodian 2023 South Asian Games, Goh believed that it would not be easy for the Malaysian badminton team to achieve the results they desired due to strong competition from Indonesia.

In addition, Goh claimed that many professional athletes had been involved in the “Road to Gold” initiative by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to win Malaysia’s first Olympic Gold medal.

Goh also reminded the public to pay attention to joint health and to communicate and enjoy the time with their children.

“These days people are more conscious on their health, especially joint health and lack of exercise is one of the causes of joint health. Therefore, the organisers of the GLY 3V3 tournament hope to encourage all Malaysians to improve their joint health with the theme, “Let’s MOVEON.”

Arvia Interactive Smart Board Enhances Digitalisation Efforts in the National Education System

KUALA LUMPUR: The initiative to enhance digitalisation in education will witness the introduction of the interactive smart board in teaching and learning in schools nationwide.

Early efforts were initiated recently through the cooperation between renowned smart board technology Arvia provider Israk Solutions Sdn Bhd (Israk Solutions) and the Putrajaya Federal Territory Education Department to create an innovative and interesting teaching experience.

In line with the cooperation, Arvia will formulate continued training through the ‘Arvia Certified Educator’ programme to help teachers and users effectively integrate smart board technology into their teaching.

According to Israk Solutions Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Ahmad Najib Habeb, the programme will equip teachers with skills required to optimise the use of the technology involved and, at the same time, create dynamic and interesting teaching.

“The cooperation between Arvia and the Putrajaya Federal Territory Education Department is aimed at enhancing digitalisation efforts in education.”

“Integration of the smart board technology can revolutionise the current education delivery system.

“The Arvia smart board technology was created to provide an interactive and interesting experience for students to allow them to study in an enjoyable environment,’’ he said.

Representing Putrajaya Federal Territory Education Department’s Educational Technology Resources Division, Padli Saed said a training workshop had already been conducted on March 22, 2023, with the attendance of teachers from several schools around Putrajaya, whereby the session involved the introduction and exposure about the Arvia smart board.

The event, which involved the introduction and exposure to the Arvia smart board, was attended by teachers from several schools around Putrajaya.

“This is to ensure that representatives from schools that are interested to learn about the usage of the smart board have seen and experienced handling it (Arvia smart board) by themselves.

“At the moment, the smart board is only available at the Putrajaya Federal Territory Education Department,’’ he added.

According to him, this effort will be continuously carried out by Israk Solutions and the Education Department to explore and feel the experience of handling the smart board. It will enable both parties to collect feedback and opinion from school representatives involving any matter (issues) faced by the schools (them).

Padli also said the Putrajaya Federal Territory Education Department was excited to work with Arvia in introducing the smart board technology to the department as well as schools in Putrajaya.

“This cooperation (between the Education Department and Israk Solutions) is also aimed at helping teachers identify and utilise the technological abilities of the smart board to help themselves as well as their students in the daily learning process,’’ he said.

Padli added the cooperation between the two parties played an important role in digitalising education in Malaysia.

Teachers in Putrajaya as well as nationwide, will be able to upgrade the learning experience for students and prepare them to face the many challenges of the digital era, through the usage of the smart board technology and continued training programme.

The launch of CUCKOO’s Ramadan-Raya campaign is done with the release of a festive brand film titled “Menyelamatkan Kampung Bersama Bintang Pujaan”. The film begins with a sombre note set in an apocalyptic- like backdrop where the main character, Ayu (Ellyza Azizi), is seen returning to her hometown, Kampung Lesu, with something feeling amiss. Including her father, Pak Jalil (Aziz M Osman), the people around her has become zombie-like, except for Nur (Nik Farin) who she realises was ‘normal’. Suspecting the kampung’s shortage of meat supply as a possible cause of the mysterious phenomenon, a determined Ayu then sets out on a mission to uncover the kampung’s mystery and find a cure.

Carefully scripted and paced, the film on the edge with mysteries, adventures, and comedy, as they journey together with Ayu on her quest to save her kampung (or lawan lesu with CUCKOO). Keeping the film entertaining also are comedic scenes with Samsol Zombie (Aloy Paradoks) who is ultimately saved by CUCKOO S.I.H.A.T.

Lotus’s moves towards sustainability

KUALA LUMPUR: Lotus’s Malaysia, has entered Phase 3 of the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on the rooftops of 21 of its stores nationwide, including Its Ambient Distribution Centre in Bukit Beruntung, Selangor.

Lotus’s Malaysia enters into a 20 years Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Altervim Co. Ltd (Altervim) until year 2042, beginning 30 March 2023.

“Once the installation is completed in September 2023, the solar PV panels will collectively generate 20,000,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy per year, which is equivalent to lighting up more than 3,500 houses annually. The clean energy generated will offset a total of 9,585 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere”, said Lotus’s Malaysia President, Kenneth Chuah.

Altervim will fully invest in the 22 solar PVs which include the design, installation, operation and maintenance of the solar PV systems.

Plus Xnergy Sdn Bhd has been appointed as the local Clean Energy Specialist for this project.

Besides the Ambient Distribution Center in Bukit Beruntung, the 21 stores which will be fitted with the solar PV panels through the Lotus’s – Altervim PPA are in towns located throughout Malaysia, including Perak, Johor, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan and Kelantan.

Lotus’s Malaysia entered into its first PPA with NE Suria Satu Sdn Bhd (NESS), a joint-venture company of PETRONAS and NEFIN Group in 2020.

It involved the installation of solar PV panels on 15 of its stores. The retailer then went to its second PPA with with NEFIN Group in 2022, to install solar PV panels on another 13 of its stores.

The total cost of conversion to solar panels for 22 stores is in the range of RM38 million but Lotus’s is committed to green energy in line with sustainable development goals (SDG) set by the United Nations.

“Through the Lotus’s-Altervim PPA, this makes Lotus’s Malaysia the largest commercial solar PV installation in Malaysia to date,” Chuah further added.

Lotus’s Malaysia currently operates 65 stores and two distribution centres in Peninsular Malaysia. With the first, second and the current PPA combined, the retailer will now have a total of 49 stores and 1 Distribution Centre, making 75% of Lotus’s facilities powered with solar by end 2023, reinforcing the company’s commitment towards its carbon neutral goal by 2030.

NCT Group Breaks Ground on Malaysia’s first Certified Managed Industrial Park

SELANGOR: NCT Group of Companies (NCT Group) today marked a significant milestone with the ground breaking ceremony of Malaysia’s first certified Managed Industrial Park (MIP) of its kind, NCT Smart Industrial Park (NSIP), which took place at Movenpick Hotel and Convention Centre KLIA. Officiated by Selangor Menteri Besar, YAB Dato’ Seri Amirudin bin Shari and accompanied by YB Tuan Ng Suee Lim, State Selangor Speaker, the project is set to spur the State’s industrial property sector and contribute to the economic growth of Selangor.

As a key project of IDRISS, NSIP will feature advanced infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) technology, state-of-the-art data analytics, and various other latest advancements in digitalisation and automation. By harnessing the power of digitalisation, NSIP aims to create intelligent, connected systems that enable seamless operations while streamlining end-to-end process flows for its investors, as NSIP becomes the hub for electrical & electronic (E&E), semiconductor, smart logistics and transportation and 4IR-inspired industries.

Comprising a total of three phases, the first phase of NSIP will consist of 101 units and 27 plots featuring semi-detached factory, detached factory, link-detached factory, and industrial plots ranging from up to 50 acres. Anchored on its digital capabilities and leading the way as Malaysia’s First Certified MIP, the expected gross development value (GDV) of NSIP is approximately RM8 billion for all three phases of the development.

As an Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Industrial Park with GreenRE certification, NSIP will be fully equipped with solar-ready factories, rainwater harvesting systems, and water and waste management systems, aimed at reducing industrial and commercial carbon footprint and promote sustainable business practices, enabling its tenants to maintain their competitive advantage in the market.

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian woman has won the jackpot prize of RM16,318,043 in the Magnum 4D Jackpot game, thanks to a recurring dream she had.

The 54-year-old business shop owner kept seeing the number 5785 in her dreams and decided to purchase a System Bet-8 at a Magnum 4D shop.

“The lucky number 5785 kept showing up in my dreams, and I just had to try my luck to purchase this number. I usually buy the Magnum 4D Classic game but as the Magnum 4D Jackpot amount was the highest, I decided to try my luck with that game instead. I was on my way to visit my relatives in Banting, and while on my journey, I also saw the same car plate number 3887 reappearing. We decided to stop and buy some fruits for my relatives, and there was a Magnum 4D shop right next door. My instincts told me to go in, and I decided to purchase the System Bet-8, giving eight sets of numbers to increase my chances. I’m so glad that I followed my instincts. This is really a dream come true for me,“ she said.

“It was truly exciting to watch the draw results on the Magnum 4D website. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the first number, 3887 displayed and then the number 5785 was also revealed. Just for assurance, I got my son to check the ticket by scanning it using the MyMagnum 4D app”, she explained excitedly.

She plans to use the winnings to buy a dream house, take a vacation with her family, and donate to charity. Magnum 4D hopes that the win inspires others to play responsibly and dream big.

Keeping your blood pressure in check during Hari Raya

The week before Hari Raya Aidilfitri is usually a very busy time for Muslims. After a month of reflection and prayer during Ramadhan, many look forward to being able to celebrate with family and friends, and to feast upon the various traditional delicacies that make their appearance during this time of year.

But although food plays a major role in our Raya celebration, it’s important to remember that the health choices we make during this festive season may be carried forward to the rest of the year. Therefore, we should focus on making the right decisions when it comes to nutrition and exercise, in order to ensure that we can enjoy a better and healthier Raya for many more years to come.

Eat in moderation. One of the many blessings of living in Malaysia is the wide variety of food that is available to us. However, we should try not to overindulge, particularly with dishes that are laden with fats or sugars. An easy way to practise portion control is by simply measuring out a meal using your hands. Each meal should include:

Protein such as chicken, fish or beans: a palm-sized portion for women or two palm-sized portions for men

Vegetables: a fist-sized portion for women or two fist-sized portions for men

Carbohydrates such as rice or starchy vegetables such as potatoes: a cupped hand portion for women or two portions for men

Fats such as oil or peanut sauce: a thumb-sized portion for women and two thumb-sized portions for men

You can also consciously choose to sit closer to healthier options around the table to avoid the inclination to overindulge.

Exercise more often. After a full month of fasting and reducing rigorous physical activity, the days following Hari Raya would be a great time to start thinking about getting back in shape. While it may be tempting to only focus on food and festivities during this period, you can also take the time to schedule some exercise, or simply make an effort to keep moving. Even if you are not able to start with a workout routine, you can stay active by walking more and keeping up with house chores. After all, what better way to burn off those extra Raya calories.

LBS inks MOU with SANY Group to collaborate on property and port projects worth RM11b

PETALING JAYA: LBS Bina Group Berhad (“LBS” or the “Group”), a renowned property developer in Malaysia, today announced that it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) with SANY Group Co., Ltd. (“SANY Group”), a global leader in the engineering machinery manufacturing industry, ranked by Forbes as the 468th largest company in the world.

Based in China, SANY Group is the world’s second largest heavy equipment manufacturer, known for their innovative and high-quality products. SANY Group is a leading high-end equipment manufacturer principally involved in general construction activities with over 20 R&D centres, automobile manufacturing, port machinery, new energy industries, architectural design, industrial internet, and the manufacturing of precast concrete products, with service networks in over 150 countries.

Under the terms of the MOU, LBS and SANY Group are to collaborate to (a) jointly explore SANY Group’s latest structural system for the development of 10,000 units of properties across Asia, with a total project value of approximately RM3 billion; and (b) jointly explore, research and plan for an intelligent deep-water port in Malacca and build a One-Stop Industrial 4.0 Hub Port in the Malacca Waterfront Economic Zone (M-WEZ) comprising of free trade zones, and oil and liquefied natural gas industrial park and other port-related businesses using SANY Group’s expertise, that will amount to a total investment value of approximately RM8 billion.

The signing of the momentous MOU took place in China World Hotel Beijing, with esteemed LBS Executive Chairman, Tan Sri Lim Hock San signing on behalf of LBS. Representing SANY Group was the distinguished President, Mr. Tang Xiu Guo.

The ceremony was elevated by the presence of several distinguished guests, including the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Transport Minister, YB Tuan Anthony Loke, the Local Government Development Minister, YB Tuan Nga Kor Ming, the International Trade and Industry Minister, YB Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, the Science and Technology Minister, YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang, the Foreign Minister, YB Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir, and the Tourism Minister, YB Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who all bore witness to the historic signing.

This MOU shall be effective from 1 April 2023 and valid for a period of one (1) year with an automatic extension for a further period of one (1) year, unless extended or renewed by mutual agreement of the Parties in writing.

LBS Executive Chairman Tan Sri Lim Hock San said, “We have had a long-standing fruitful relationship with the SANY Group, tracing back to 2017 when we entered into a joint venture with them to kickstart our IBS precast concrete plants. We are pleased to continue to collaborate with SANY Group to explore our synergies in both property development across Asia and industry and port development in Malacca.

We aim to work towards becoming a leading developer across the region which we hope to achieve through the use of IBS precast concrete. In addition, there is plenty of potential in Malacca and we are optimistic we would be able to contribute towards growing the economy within the state through the development of an industrial port.”
