Now that the situation is back to normal, the organizers and the title sponsor REDtone are happy to see the tourney picking up momentum and riding high as can be gauged from the number of entries received.

The 14th edition has received 821 entries surpassing the 800-mark barrier, just like the previous edition. Total entries for 2019 were 860.

However, the number of countries dwindled from 20 previously to 14 this time around. Wales are making their debut. The others comprise regulars from Singapore, India, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, China, Pakistan, Eqypt, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia and hosts Malaysia.

The bulk of the participants come from Malaysia who will be represented by 664 players from all the states including the elite coming from SRAM Bukit Jalil Sports School. Selangor are highest with 176 players followed by Negri Sembilan (64) hosts Kuala Lumpur (55) and Penang (53).

REDtone Group chief executive officer Lau Bik Soon said he was happy that this edition marks the 9th time REDtone has been the title sponsor for the prestigious event.

“It is especially meaningful for us as we emerge from the challenging period whereby the Covid-19 pandemic has forced most sporting events to be suspended since early 2020.

We are also happy to note that the tournament remains as one of the biggest junior events in Asia, a distinction it has held since 2013,“ said Lau, adding that he was happy working with the Squash Racquets Association of Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur partnership.

“We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to SRAFTKL for their steadfast commitment and determination in making the 14th edition a reality,“ said Lau.

“For the 4th year, it has become the Platinum event after being the biggest in Asia (Gold event) since 2013. We hope to see it grow further, added Kwan.

The tournament has made an impressive impact since 2014. Between 2014-2016, it broke the 600 mark while in 2017 & 2018 it smashed the 700 mark. Now for the 4th consecutive time, it has become a platinum event. The tourney which is sanctioned by the Asian Squash Federation (ASF) is the biggest event in Asia and second in the world after the US Junior Open.

A new milestone in sustainable dining

In line with the current trend emphasising health, well-being and sustainable eating, Berjaya Penang Hotel has made a conscious effort by transforming its Berjaya Cafe (formerly known as The Café) into a vegetarian restaurant starting from 1 November 2022.

Modelled after the Berjaya Cafe at Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, this restaurant will be the first fully vegetarian restaurant within major hotels in Penang. In 2020, Berjaya Cafe at Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur took the honour of being the first fully vegetarian restaurant among major hotels in Malaysia. The idea behind the transformation is inspired by Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun, Founder and Chairman of Berjaya Corporation Berhad (“BCorp”), who upholds the belief that “Every individual can play a role to help Mother Earth, even in a small way, by being a vegetarian”.

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Vincent Tan also shared his personal experience being a vegetarian and how it helped in improving his overall well-being. He said: “I became a vegetarian seven years ago. I was surprised that there was almost an immediate change after I completed my first full vegetarian weekend. I decided from then on to continue being a vegetarian”.

“We must not kill just to satisfy our cravings for food and bring suffering to the livestock like cows, chickens, goats, lambs and sea creatures like fishes, prawns and other living creatures,” Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Vincent Tan added.

Embracing vegetarianism goes beyond just switching to a vegetarian diet but it is also about caring for our own health, the environment and our earth to reverse the negative impact of global warming as well as preserve nature. Master Cheng Yen, Founder of Tzu Chi, said: “Eating vegetarian is not just a wonderful way for us to show our love for all living creatures—it is also good for our own health and spirit”.

Tan Sri Dr Lim Wee Chai, Executive Chairman of Top Glove Corporation Berhad, is also a strong supporter of vegetarianism and he once said: “Turning vegetarian completes my 5 wells of clean well, eat well, work well, exercise well and sleep well”.

The transformation of Berjaya Cafe into a vegetarian restaurant is one of the many examples of sustainable eating championed by BCorp’s food retail business segment. Other plant-based brands under BCorp include Sala, Simply Good Food, Kelava vegan ice cream and Kusa Japanese vegan restaurant.

Berjaya Cafe, Berjaya Penang Hotel is open from 6.30am to 11.00pm daily. Currently, the restaurant offers a 10% discount on its menu plus free flow of coffee and tea. In conjunction with International Meatless Day on 25 November 2022, it will also be offering a special promotion with a 4-course set meal priced at RM45 nett per person.

Team ‘Kungfu Chicken’ from SMK Tinggi Batu Pahat took home the championship title and was awarded RM5,000 cash prize.

PHYGITAL: Artworks with a digital twin

NFTAPIR is making concerted efforts to bridge the intersection between traditional art collectors and NFT collectors by offering a brand-new perspective on how artists and collectors can leverage the power of NFTs and be relevant in today’s world and essentially ready for the metaverse.

Aligned with this aspiration, Malaysia’s first PHYGITAL exhibition, themed PHYGITAL: Artworks with a Digital Twin – featuring more than 25 artworks by Malaysian artists – will be exhibited until Nov 19, 2022 at Hall 1, G13 Gallery in Kelana Square, Petaling Jaya. There will be artworks in different mediums, including oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas, woodcut on plywood, graphite & charcoal on paper and acrylic & gloss gel on canvas.

Expect to see artworks by Caryn Koh, Fawwaz Sukri, Gan Tee Sheng, Haziq Syawal, Hisyamuddin Abdullah, Hug Yin Wan, Khairudin Zainudin, Marvin Chan, Nik Shazmie, Ong Cai Bin, Sofia Haron, Sukor Romat and Wong Ming Hao.

All artworks will be on sale and payments will be accepted in-gallery via cash & credit card as well as USDT for the more tech-savvy/crypto-ready collectors. Interested collectors can browse the artworks either online (published during exhibition dates) or by visiting the gallery.

The certificate of authenticity traditionally issued in paper will be fully digitised and will exist as part of the NFT that collectors will receive in their crypto wallet address.

The digital certificate will also include the artwork’s provenance in its entirety tracing back to the creator’s/artist’s address to the ownership transfer to the collector that is archived immutably on the Ethereum blockchain.

Artworks exhibited will also have an NFC tag affixed on the back of the item that links it to the provenance.

Kenny Teng, G13 Gallery Owner & Curator said: “By adopting NFTs into our gallery we are now able to bring more value to our collectors by offering a refreshing experience while relevant in today’s digital era. Through a digital presence, we can elevate our position in the region as a gallery that can breathe new life into many fine arts that we showcase by working with our group of artists to develop a digital twin with NFTs for better preservation of value, heritage, and legacy”.

Zang Tan, NFTapir.com Founder said: “It’s been a privilege to partner with a prominent gallery like G13 to present the country’s first exhibition that focuses on the digitisation of fine arts that will enable a widened aperture for all parties in the art ecosystem – from artists, collectors and gallerists – to benefit from the growing global movement in NFTs”.

Sarawak man wins life-changing RM14.3m Magnum Jackpot

A lucky Sarawakian struck the Magnum 4D Jackpot Grand Prize of RM14.3 million on 29 Oct 2022. He said winning the fortune was unexpected and let out a cry of joy and happiness the moment he found out he had won.

The 66-year-old lucky man who bought the ticket in a betting station in Kota Sentosa, Kuching, Sarawak, usually played 4D Jackpot by purchasing system5 bet lines for RM20, but the winning numbers 8239 and 3336 numbers have a story to tell.

“I used to work as a technician for many years, renting a kampong house from an old couple, who owns both houses next to each other. Due to the couple’s old age and illnesses, they sometimes require assistance. Noticing they were all alone, being kind and compassionate, I decided to take care of them like they were my own parents. They have an old car with the number 8239, and I feel lucky to have bought the number.

As for 3336, I went to a Chinese temple in Kuala Lumpur a few years ago, and I was blessed by a holy entity where that gave me this lucky number based on my Chinese astrology. With my story, I think we now believe that being brought good fortunes by holy deities is possible.”

“I am an ardent supporter of Magnum 4D for the past 40 years, started buying the classic 4D numbers when they were using the handwritten system. When Magnum launched Jackpot games, it was easy to place my bet as I will just pair up my usual classic 4D numbers. I love Magnum Jackpot and normally I will play 10-15 numbers each time,” the big winner shared.

After winning one of the biggest jackpots in history, the winner was extremely happy as he had never won such a big lottery amount before. “During the result day, I was watching the live results through the Magnum 4D app. The moment I saw both numbers were at the top 3 prizes, I was in disbelief and kept checking the result a few times. My heart leapt up for joy after realising that my dream had indeed come true. It’s been a tough year. This is life-changing,“ he said.

When asked how he will be spending his prize money, the winner said that he will share the windfall with his family members, allocate some donations to charity organisations, and enjoy his life by arranging his finances accordingly.

This is the 127th Magnum Jackpot winner since launched. Magnum would like to congratulate all winners and hope that the prize money will bring about positive changes to their lives. It is easy to play with Magnum 4D.

The ultimate Tiger Street Food Festival is back!

After two years, the Tiger Street Food Festival is back on-ground, this time with maze-like alleyways and curated experiences for fans to enjoy an elevated street food experience. Tiger has gone all out to provide an authentic but innovative experience leading up to the festival beginning with the launch of the Hottest Hunt microsite in September. Fans came together to recommend the hottest street food spots and contributed to creating a directory of bold street food dishes to try with approximately 1,000 pins dropped to date.

Some of the local favourites from the directory will be featured at this year’s Tiger Street Food Festival kicking off for two weekends – 28th to 30th October and 4th to 6th November, from 4pm to 12am at Factory 19, Seksyen 19 in Petaling Jaya. Guests will be able to check out four different areas - Wai Sek Kai, Lucky Lok Lane, Spicy Alley, and The Basement - each with its own set of unique street food vibe personalities and activities.

Wai Sek Kai will have a variety of classic street food dishes with an innovative twist. Fans hanging out at the Wai Sek Kai area can also take up dance challenges and stand to win ice-cold Tiger Crystal. The Lucky Lok Lane is where the iconic Tiger Crystal Fire Truck will be parked alongside various other vendors. Fans will not only get to enjoy lok lok, but also redeem vouchers to sing their hearts out in a private karaoke room.

The Spicy Alley within the venue will feature the hottest street food for fans to sample, and even set their tastebuds on fire by taking up the Spicy Wheel Challenge. Fans will also get to enjoy Tiger with a vintage pouring ritual, served in bowls at the Spicy Alley. Finally, the Basement will feature a unique vibe with open mic karaoke as well as stand-up comedy, all while fans enjoy Tiger Crystal Somaek.

To commemorate their street food experience in style, fans can also elevate their social media game with the various Instaworthy spots at the festival. They will also be able to purchase exclusive street food-inspired merchandise from local designers, available at the Tiger Merchandise Store located at Wai Sek Kai.

“After all our fans’ hard work of dropping pins to the hottest street food spots, we are excited to kickstart the long-awaited Street Food Festival with even more culinary adventures and curated experiences. Tiger has continually elevated the street food experience, and this year is particularly special because fans had a big role to play in recommending and trying dishes suggested by fellow foodies,” said Joyce Lim, Marketing Manager of Tiger Beer Malaysia.

At the launch of the festival, the brand unveiled Tiger Stripes, a long-term project to award deserving street food vendors for their bold street food flavours. The brand is encouraging fans to continue to drop pins on the microsite throughout the Tiger Stripes project. Then, a judging panel of restaurateurs, chefs and food personalities will sample and evaluate the top 100 pins that fans have recommended from the Hottest Hunt directory.

“We are excited to take the local street food scene to the next level with the launch of Tiger Stripes. This platform aims to be the hallmark of street food excellence by recognising the best local street food. This could not have been done without the help of our fans and the directory created by them. This process and the announcement of judges will begin in January 2023, so fans can stay tuned for more exciting updates,” Lim continued.

Fans can continue to drop pins to recommend their favourite street food spots and bring their favourite street food vendor a step closer to being awarded Tiger Stripes. Fans who want to be part of the festival can register at hottesthunt.tigerstreetfood.my to join in on the fun. The full list of vendors participating in the festival can be found on the website too.

For a better society and environment

WCT Holdings Berhad (“WCT” or “the Group) an investment holding company with businesses in engineering and construction, property development as well as investment in and management of retail malls, hotels, and business aviation, today announced the launch of its new proposition, ‘WCTGives’ as a pledge to commit to its CSR programmes and as an extension of the Group’s sustainability effort to contribute to society and environment.

The newly launched sustainability and CSR proposition, ‘WCTGives’ encompasses three pillars, namely #WeCareTogether, #EducationforAll, and #AGreenerTomorrow; each of which focuses on various programmes that aim to enrich the lives of the community, provide education support to the underprivileged, as well as to preserve the environment.

Peter Chow, Deputy Managing Director of WCT Holdings Berhad said, “At WCT, we acknowledge the importance of striking a balance between profitability and doing good to bring equal values to its businesses and society. ‘WCTGives’ is in line with the Group’s purpose of ‘Building Sustainable and Thriving Communities’ and reflect our ongoing commitment towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (“UN SDGs”) through our streamlined CSR programmes”.

Under the new proposition, WCT will continue to allocate 0.2% of its total annual revenue to fund its various CSR programmes across all business divisions. The total contribution made in FY2021 for charitable causes stands at RM2.8million.

WCT Kickstarts ‘Feed the Needy’ in conjunction with Deepavali Celebration

To mark the launch of the proposition, WCT kickstarted its first Group CSR initiative under the community pillar – ‘Feed the Needy’ in conjunction with the Deepavali celebration. WCT employees, together with the assistance from Women of Will (WOW), have successfully reached out to 50 Indian families belonging to the B40 community in PPR Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur with the distribution of 200 packets of meals and savoury snacks prepared by the Group’s hotels, namely Premiére Hotel, Klang and Le Méridien Petaling Jaya. To add to the festive cheer, the Group also supported the B40 women entrepreneurs from WOW’s Community Kitchen by purchasing cookies, which were then distributed to the Indian families.

“We understand the plight of the underprivileged B40 community who are looking for support to alleviate their burden of putting food on the table, hence this Festival of Lights, we want to keep the underprivileged in mind and we hope that the celebration will be more vibrant and livelier for the community with our support,” added Chow, who also expressed his gratitude to the NGO partner and employee volunteers who joined in the effort.

WCT Supports the Local Communities

Among other notable community support initiatives that were held this year include donations to ease the burden of the 2021 flood victims, the annual distribution of Bubur Lambuk, Buka Puasa events with the underprivileged families in Klang, and donation to Persatuan Hakka Daerah Ranau, Sabah in view of the Ramadan and Hari Raya celebration, as well as contribution to Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Foundation’s annual fundraising event, the Laksamana Run. These initiatives by and across Group’s business divisions were in line with WCT’s sustainability goal of Enhancing Livelihood and supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (“UN SDGs”) 1 and 10 on No Poverty and Reduced Inequality.

WCT Provides Support to Educational Institutions

On top of that, WCT is also actively providing educational support to the local community surrounding its development. In July 2022, WCT’s Property Development division donated RM14,300.00 to Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Indah, OUG KL to fund the school’s activities and programmes under Aktiviti dan Program Pembangunan Kecemerlangan Sekolah for the year 2022/2023. Prior to that, the division also sponsored ten desktop computers to equip the school with a fully functional computer lab.

WCT Commits to Environmental Protection

Separately, WCT’s commitment to environmental protection is supported by the Group’s long-term waste segregation initiative, WCT’s Landfill Waste Reduction Programme. Introduced across WCT’s various offices in 2020, the programme aims to create awareness among all employees on good recycling habits and the importance of waste segregation.

The programme has successfully diverted 11.08 tonnes of waste from being sent to the landfill. With 10.5 tonnes of papers collected and recycled, WCT has also prevented about 179 trees from being cut down. At present, the Group is collaborating with its official partner, Tzu Chi Foundation (Malaysia) to meet its sustainability goal of reducing waste sent to landfill by 10% by 2026. In conjunction with World Clean Up Day 2022 recently, WCT also donated RM5,000.00 to the NGO to support its environmental and charitable mission.

WCT Receives Recognition at the Sustainability & CSR Malaysia Awards 2022

In August 2022, WCT was awarded for the second time the Company of The Year Award under the Engineering, Construction & Property Development Category at the Sustainability & CSR Malaysia Awards 2022. The notable honour was in recognition of WCT’s involvement in community initiatives throughout FY2021.

Chow concluded, “With our continuous effort of integrating sustainable development goals in all our economic endeavours, we are certain that the Group will be able to drive collective economic growth and at the same time build meaningful relationships with our communities as well as to uphold environmental stewardship.”

A STUNNING live performance of classical music took place at the award-winning all-suite resort-style hotel, The Haven Resort in Ipoh, Perak, leaving the audience with a mesmerizing night of unrivaled musical bliss.

The event was held over three nights, from Oct 27-29, at the resort together with the collaboration of the Selangor Symphony Orchestra (SSO) and supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture.

Without a doubt, The Haven Musical Extravaganza is the world’s first to feature a ‘Sensurround’ musical performance that combines the resort’s unique natural acoustic setting with cutting-edge technology for a truly immersive experience.

Situated on the outskirts of a virgin forest, with an ever-flowing lake and a magnificent 280-million-year-old preserved limestone rock and 15 minutes from the city centre of Ipoh, The Haven Resort is indeed a luxurious resort consisting of 150 suites with lavish facilities, including a clubhouse, helipad, jogging track, and specially built seahorse-shaped 5-section swimming pool.

This resort truly has something for everyone, and it is a paradise for people wishing to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, with activities for families, couples, outdoor lovers, foodies, and more.

The live classical music performances were scheduled to begin at 8pm after dinner, with the audience seated in a specified location under a beautifully lit tent in the garden by the lake, facing music director and conductor Eugene Pook, who is also the founder of SSO.

The symphony orchestra was set up on the floating stage, and as part of the first-of-its-kind ‘Sensurround’ experience, the music emanating from the lake will be further enhanced through the strategic placement of musicians around the resort, at the edge of the forest, and at various levels within the three blocks.

Hence, audiences can choose to enjoy the concert from the garden by the lake, the Amphitheatre, or even the balconies of their suites, making it a really unique and unforgettable experience.

The performance by Dr. Hyungi Kim, a renowned international violinist from South Korea, and Jiayao Sun, a renowned international mezzo-soprano from China, astounded everyone present, including myself, considering that it was unusual to witness such talents performing in such a natural setting, bringing melodies such as The Four Seasons, Ombra Mai Fu from the opera Serse and more.

Additionally, the performances of Ayraf Farhan Adi Zairi, who performed a song by Anuar Zain, and the young singers from the Estee Pook Academy, who presented the popular song You Raise Me Up, also genuinely touched the hearts of the audience.

Personally, it was the best musical experience I’ve ever had, along with the resort’s ambiance that I couldn’t obtain any place else. Anyone who attended this musical performance, including me, would undoubtedly want to see another one in the near future.
