Towards a better future

Protecting the environment is becoming a priority for many companies as they pledge support for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG).

Carlsberg Malaysia managing director Stefano Clini said the company is setting up a roadmap to achieve net zero carbon emissions across the entire value chain by 2040, from the barley in the fields to the beer in the hand.

He said this is part of the company’s new Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) programme, Together Towards Zero and Beyond.

“Together with our UN pledge and ESG programme, Carlsberg has made strides in delivering its commitment, including a 73% reduction in carbon emissions and 31% reduction in water use per hectolitre of beer brewed this year against 2015.

“The company has also achieved over 1,300 days of Lost Time Accident-free over the last three years.”

He said Carlsberg is focused on achieving six zeros, Zero Carbon Footprint, Zero Farming Footprint, Zero packaging waste, Zero Water Waste, Zero Irresponsible drinking and Zero Accidents Culture. Clini said the company is also pledging its support towards Malaysia’s Net Zero Emissions ambition by 2050.

Clini pointed out that Carlsberg is attempting to leave the smallest carbon footprint possible.

“We will leave no stone unturned, from the grains and water that the company brews, to the recycling of empty bottles and cans for the benefit of the company and society.

“To achieve this ambition, the company has made green investments including purchasing electric forklifts to replace diesel-powered and LPG units which will give a potential carbon emissions reduction of 194,000kg/year,” he said.

Clini said the company is using natural gas and biogas for its wastewater treatment plant. He said the company is also on target to achieve zero waste to landfills via recycling its spent yeast, wastewater sludge and kieselguhr, which is a form of diatomaceous earth used in various manufacturing and laboratory processes, chiefly as a filter.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals are a global call to action to end poverty, protect the earth’s environment and climate, and ensure that people everywhere can enjoy peace and prosperity. These are the goals the UN is working on in Malaysia.

Refresh your music

HEINEKEN has teamed up with world-famous electropop duo The Chainsmokers to launch its “Refresh Your Music, Refresh Your Nights” campaign in Asia. The cross-genre, cross-culture platform allows fans of different cultures, tribes, and music preferences to come together to expand their music tastes.

In collaboration with The Chainsmokers, the campaign features four local artists – two from Vietnam and two from Malaysia who will refresh The Chainsmokers’ hit songs in their own distinctive style.

Representing Malaysia is Yunohoo, a trilingual rapper with deep roots in hip-hop. She will perform alongside singer-songwriter NYK, whose experimental approach and diverse taste in music have helped him create the unique and versatile sound that he is known for today.

“We are thrilled to be a part of HEINEKEN’s Refresh Your Music, Refresh Your Nights campaign. We have always believed that music has the power to break any barriers, and that is why this campaign resonated with us. We are excited to perform with some of the most well-loved artists from the region and introduce people to new genres of music” says The Chainsmokers.

By refreshing these popular songs, HEINEKEN hopes to introduce more fans to broader musical genres. As the campaign’s grand finale, The Chainsmokers will headline a pair of concerts in Asia for fans along with the four local artists. The Malaysian edition will be held on 9th December in Genting Highlands, where the local artists, NYK and Yunohoo will perform their refreshed renditions alongside The Chainsmokers.

Yunohoo shares, “I am beyond excited to be a part of Heineken Music and can’t wait to see how I can work my own artistry to a track by The Chainsmokers! Throughout my years in the industry, I have had the opportunity to explore many different avenues, and I look forward to bringing a refreshing new take on how fans can enjoy music through ‘Refresh Your Music, Refresh Your Nights’ this year.”

NYK adds, “Exploring different music genres has always been a huge part of my creative process – I am often inspired by different sounds, beats and arrangements that help me see this art of sound in a new light. Being a part of ‘Refresh Your Music, Refresh Your Nights’ is exciting to me as I will be able to add my own flair to well-known tracks by The Chainsmokers so that it can be heard in a new light.”

Refresh Hub - The cross-genre platform that offers music fans elevated experiences

Fans in Malaysia can experience the HEINEKEN Playlist Refresher on Spotify hosted on https://ift.tt/ULhJZau, which allows them to co-create a playlist with a friend to discover new genres of music.

From 19th October onwards, fans can also register on the event page here to receive exclusive invites to the Heineken Refresh event taking place in Genting Highlands on 9th December featuring The Chainsmokers, NYK, and Yunohoo, alongside local DJs BATE, Blink and Julian. Exclusive invites to the event will be given on a limited and first-come, first-served basis.

In November, fans can vote for their favourite refreshed rendition by the local artists on the Refresh Hub. By voting, these fans also stand to win VIP passes to the Heineken Refresh event (Contest Mechanics and Terms & Conditions Apply).

“With the Refresh Your Music, Refresh Your Nights campaign, we want to echo HEINEKEN’s belief that life tastes better with an open mind, whether it is in social situations or music tastes. We are very excited to have The Chainsmokers and four equally talented Asian artists come together to create this music experience for HEINEKEN fans,” says Rajeev Sathyesh, HEINEKEN Brand Director (APAC).

Guinness Perfect Pour 2022 champ crowned

Heineken Malaysia Berhad’s (HEINEKEN Malaysia) Star Academy celebrated the Guinness Perfect Pour grand finale at Makhan by Kitchen Mafia last Thursday. From August to October, the Guinness Perfect Pour programme successfully trained bartenders nationwide to uphold the standards of serving Guinness while in search of the number one Guinness bartender. Upon completion, the celebration event gathered the best of the best bartenders across Malaysia for an award ceremony to crown the 2022 champion. This year, Richard Jugie from The Sarawak Club has earned his place as the nation’s top Guinness bartender, walking away with an all-expenses paid trip to the Home of Guinness in Dublin, Ireland.

Launched in 2017, the Guinness Perfect Pour programme aims to elevate the standards of service in the food and beverage industry by training bartenders nationwide to uphold the serving quality of Guinness. This year, 670 bartenders from 233 bar outlets participated in the Guinness Perfect Pour training programme that was held in six states across Peninsular and East Malaysia. During the training, participants with stellar performances stood a chance to earn their place as the nation’s best Guinness bartender. Participants who joined the programme also underwent a theory and physical test, with their product knowledge and bartending skills put to the test and graded accordingly. Upon completion, two finalists from Kuala Lumpur and one finalist from Sabah, Sarawak, Johor, Penang, and Ipoh respectively joined the award ceremony at the grand finale celebration.

In the opening remarks, Roland Bala, Managing Director of HEINEKEN Malaysia said “We at HEINEKEN Malaysia take pride in the distinct taste of our premium brands. Our commitment to serving the best quality beer goes beyond the brewery, as we believe that bartenders too play an important role in ensuring that our consumers get to enjoy their favourite beers. Therefore, we introduced training programmes such as the Guinness Perfect Pour to ensure that consumers in Malaysia can enjoy the perfect taste of Guinness, just as it was intended. After bracing two years of a challenging pandemic, I am pleased to gather physically once again with the best Guinness bartenders across Malaysia and witness the emergence of this year’s champion bartender.”

The grand finale saw HEINEKEN Malaysia crown Richard Jugie from The Sarawak Club as Malaysia’s Guinness Perfect Pour 2022 champion. Ang Ai Keow from Souliquid Puchong has also earned the first runner-up title. Both winners have successfully mastered the perfect pour and will soon be on their way on an all-expense-paid trip to the Home of Guinness, where Irish brewer Arthur Guinness first started brewing the world-renowned stout over 250 years ago.

Richard Jugie, bartender at The Sarawak Club and Guinness Perfect Pour 2022 champion said, “I am extremely grateful to be part of this year’s Guinness Perfect Pour where I got the opportunity to hone my skills and master the perfect pour. It is indeed a unique experience as I’ve got to train alongside my fellow bartenders where we challenged ourselves in serving and delivering Guinness’ distinctive taste.”

Vasily Baranov, Sales Director of HEINEKEN Malaysia added, “We want to ensure that our premium brands are served at the highest quality. Hence, through our annual Guinness Perfect Pour training programme, we work alongside our partner outlets to serve and showcase our Guinness beer - as the work of art it is. We are very impressed with this year’s participants as 670 passionate bartenders strived to master the perfect Guinness pour and served only the very best to consumers. By maintaining excellence through proper bar training, it is a promise to all our fans, that across Malaysia, everyone can enjoy a perfectly poured glass of the World’s No. 1 stout.”

During the celebration event, attendees had the chance to participate in exciting activities alongside a live band to amp up the celebration. Attendees also had their very own mini perfect pour challenge, where event guests had a hand in trying out the unique six-step Guinness Perfect Pour and learned how to bring out the perfect Guinness flavour, aroma, and presentation. The competition was intense as the event attendees gave their best shot at breaking the high score and winning exclusive premium gifts.

Start your career in nutrition science

Nutritionists play an important role in the prevention of non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Balanced nutrition is essential to healthy living and overall well-being. Globally, the prevalence rate of obesity and overweight is steadily increasing. According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey (2019), 1 in 2 Malaysian adults are either overweight or obese. The Ministry of Health Malaysia has identified increasing the number of competent nutritionists in the healthcare workforce as one of the key strategies to combat the nutrition-related health issues and reduce the healthcare expenditure of non-communicable diseases.

An understanding of essential nutrients required by the body is vital to enable the general population to stay healthy, active and fit. If you are interested in educating and promoting a balanced diet and overall health and wellness to the public, then studies in human nutrition at Monash University Malaysia will provide you with comprehensive knowledge and skills that tap into the multi-faceted discipline of human nutrition. You will be trained to become a work-ready, competent nutritionist upon completion of the comprehensive 3-year nutrition program.

The Bachelor of Human Nutrition program at the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences covers the broad scope of food in society, in-depth knowledge of nutritional and biomedical science and links the role of nutrition in health and disease prevention. The three-year program will introduce students to the fundamental concepts of food, nutritional and biomedical sciences. The inter-related units will assist students in understanding the human body and subsequently comprehending critical principles in human nutrition and food science. Students will be able to determine the social and behavioural aspects that affect individuals, communities and populations at large, by considering the broad aspect of religion, culture and political belief within a community from a nutritionist’s perspective. Students will also be exposed to a greater understanding of specific groups’ nutritional needs and issues while learning about the roles of nutrition in the context of human health and in disease.

During the first two years of the program, students will be taught the scientific basis of nutrient requirements and healthy eating, with significant reference to nutritional physiology, biochemistry and immunology. Their studies will be intertwined with practical elements such as assessing dietary intake, food chemistry and composition, and complex regulatory requirements relating to food and nutrition.

In the final year, students will have the opportunity to undertake nutrition research and obtain work-integrated learning experience. Students will be learning from and working with professional nutritionists and researchers who specialise in dietary intake and metabolism, public health nutrition, functional foods, sports and exercise nutrition, food science, body composition, hunger and satiety, as well as maternal and child health, as they work on their nutrition research project. For the real-word work experience, students will have a wide selection of placement sites, including public or private community hospitals or clinics, non-governmental organisations, the food industry, sports, fitness and wellness centres, media companies, and healthcare-related corporate companies. This experiential training would make the students more competent and readier for the future workforce.

“Food is the best medicine – A nutritionist is a trained healthcare professional who can help the public to understand the myths and facts about the various food choices and supplements via interpreting and translating scientific knowledge into practical information. A nutritionist plays an important role in the healthcare field by contributing to a healthier nation,” shares program coordinator and senior lecturer, Dr Tan Seok Shin.

Students can also select elective units from other programs and schools on and across campuses, giving them a cross-campus and international experience. The program has embedded inter-professional (IPL) learning activities where students from the nutrition program learn together with students from other health professional courses like Medicine and Pharmacy. IPL prepares the graduates to work collaboratively and confidently with members from other healthcare professions in the development of an integrated approach towards disease prevention; thus, contributing to the building of a healthy community and nation.

A Bachelor of Human Nutrition degree will prepare graduates to pursue careers in diverse health-related settings. These include the food industry, nutrition research institutions, government and non-government agencies, health clinics and hospitals, digital health, sports, fitness and wellness centres, food service companies, media industries, scientific and regulatory advisory bodies as well as food entrepreneurship. With further study, students can pursue a career in the higher education sector and become a nutrition researcher or academic.

Do you have a passion for food and nutrition? Find out more about the Bachelor of Human Nutrition program offered by one of the top-ranking universities at this LINK.

Celebrities’ smiles that went from 0 to 100 real quick

Your smile possesses many superpowers; among them is the ability to make you feel and appear younger and look smaller while also making you feel more pleasant and confident. Unfortunately, not everybody has a flawless grin. Despite the fact that it would seem as though these celebrities had it all, this is rarely the case, as before their dentists could salvage their teeth, they truly did not look their best. Unquestionably, with the help of a reputable dentist, you too could have the same stunning smile as one of these celebrities. Here are five celebrities you wouldn’t even recognise if they hadn’t gotten their teeth fixed.

1. Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise is renowned for his good looks and ideal smile. He was among the first in his field to have veneers and undergo cosmetic dentistry. He had to get his teeth fixed in order to get a role in Hollywood movies!

2. Cardi B

Before getting her teeth corrected, Cardi B was constantly thinking about it. The brilliant rapper debuts her new smile during episode 2 of the seventh season of Love and Hip-Hop New York. Lucky for her, she also managed to lock in multiple modelling gigs and photoshoots after this quick change.

3. Matthew Lewis

Here we have Harry Potter's nerd-turned-hero, Neville Longbottom. Yes. It's Neville. Matthew allegedly always wanted to have his teeth fixed, but the movie studio persuaded him to wait until the Potter films were finished and they would pay for it. Sounds like a fantastic deal, but I'm sure it wasn't easy to go through years of bullying just because of his teeth but what a worthwhile glow-up.

4. Morgan Freeman

When he changed his smile, Morgan Freeman appeared to be years younger. To maintain his smile's best appearance, Freeman had cosmetic dentistry done to whiten and straighten them. They also filled the space between his two front teeth that had grown. Long after undergoing surgery, Freeman was still able to get movie jobs.

5. Mike Tyson

The history of Mike Tyson as a heavyweight boxing champion will always be well known. Knowingly, his career had taken a toll on his grin, necessitating considerable dental operations to undo the harm. Thankfully, with the aid of dental work and a smile makeover, Mike Tyson was able to close his noticeable front tooth gap and switched his gold teeth for tooth-coloured crowns. Thus, showing his new smile, which was acquired since he gave up boxing. Which, in the end, aided his acting career.

You're far closer to achieving the smile you've always desired than you believe. Affordable and top-quality corrective dental procedures are more readily available than you might think, so why are you still waiting? Act quickly and get your stunning bright smile back, as it’s finally time to start prioritising yourself.

The evocative, mystifying art of the Durian

FEELINGS and thoughts surrounding the durian are an enigma, Lim Siang Jin, a self-taught artist, believes. To adequately represent them in his art, he resorts to combining painting, working on the computer and writing in a manner that enhances the integrated wholes. In this way, he also bridges the digital-analog gap that is now prevalent in art.

Called Evocative Durian, Mystifying Durian, this series comprises acrylic-and-ink original paintings with “derivative” prints. The latter are the result of work with, among others, Adobe Photoshop and photography.

The series is one of nine at Lim’s exhibition titled Restart 2020: Continuation & Change, Biographical Expressions by Lim Siang Jin. It will be held from 21st to 30th October at A Place Where by APW in Bangsar.

In creating the “derivatives”, Lim uses props such as glass, translucent plastic, and chicken wire netting. These are the “analog” aids to help him distort the various segments of the paintings, to render the artworks subdued yet powerful, intense and mystifying – emotive elements that represent Lim’s thoughts and feelings surrounding the fruit.

With titles such as Bickering Over Durian, The Gaze Among Thorny Distractions and Above The Fray, one would be drawn to decipher the illustrations that evoke and mystify the heart and mind.

Besides the Durian series, another noteworthy digital-analog experiment can be found in Back to Black. It involves rectangles that are the amalgam of three elements: black-and-white small rectangular doodles; photos of rain tree canopies; and colours from a masterpiece, e.g. by Picasso. The resultant forms are then put together to form a Warhol-like piece.

Visitors to the exhibition will be able to appreciate these finer details when viewing the pairings of original paintings with their digital-analog prints.

All the other series at this exhibition stand equally attractive to the young and old with their interesting doodles, vibrant colours, gimmicky lines, and abstract shapes of ordinary day-to-day items and scenes. The Unconnected series would entice a visitor to figure out what the pot-bellied man is doing, for example.

This exhibition showcases the continuation of Siang Jin’s journey in art after a 30-year break. It also embodies a series of changes that have come along since his restart.

“In early 2020, a rather serendipitous act of picking up some old sketches and unfinished works reignited my enthusiasm. I kept going since and have produced about 200 paintings and digitalanalog creations including nine series showcased at this exhibition,” said Lim.

The first three series – Restart 2020: Continuation and Change (the title which this exhibition takes after), Excerpts from a Doodle and Schticks are the “continuation” arising from old doodles and sketches that have been refreshed and brought to new life. The subsequent six series – Unconnected, Adventures with Acrylics, Exaggerated Stills, Fear and Hope in Covid Times, Back to Black and Evocative Durian, Mystifying Durian represent the “change” where new ideas were formed, resulting in newer creations, especially the digital-analog pieces.

Holding this inaugural exhibition at A Place Where by APW, formerly a printing factory, also holds significance for him as a former production person and writer in the media and publishing industry using the services of the then Art Printing Works (APW).

Ee Soon Wei, CEO of A Place Where by APW, said: “I am thoroughly glad to be given an opportunity to present Siang Jin’s first solo exhibition as an artist. There are many layered connections – from space, people and work itself – to see how APW as a space continues to push boundaries creatively and collectively. Siang Jin’s work integrates this likely persona very well – deep in curiosity with his thoughtfulness in narrative. I’m grateful to be doing this together after coming out from the long extended pandemic. This exhibition brings meaning and importance of “purposeful togetherness” -where both space and art intersects.”

8 smart money moves to make in your 20s

While no one wants to bring up challenging topics like spiralling student loan debts, costly housing, or depressed job markets, people enjoy discussing the spending patterns of 20-somethings. However, keeping money in the bank might be a strategy for achieving your financial objectives. Millionaires have been known to criticise millennials for living carefree lives and eating avocado toast while the economy is at its worst since the Great Depression. While most people aren't aware that your 20s are the most crucial decade for your future financial stability. Here you'll discover 10 crucial strategies that will direct you to long-term financial independence!

1. Start Early

These emergency funds serve as your financial insurance if and when unanticipated life circumstances arise. For instance, if you experience a sudden job loss, medical emergency, or appliance breakdown. The stability of your work, your salary, and any debts you may have will all affect how much money you save in your 20s. The ultimate goal of your emergency savings should be about three to six months' worth of living expenses. Set a modest goal for your savings, such as allocating 2% of each salary to emergency savings for a period of six months. Always remember to save in a liquid, low-risk investment vehicle like a savings account to start. There are applications to aid you and provide earning interest on your savings account no matter how much you have deposited.

2. Get out of debt early

Make a list of all of your debts as a first step. Make sure you understand your student debts', credit card amounts, rates of interest, and minimum payment deadlines. When you have calculated how much you can realistically contribute to extra debt payments, go over your budget again. Keeping track of repayments when you have multiple debts of different sizes, banks, due dates, tenures and interest rates can be strenuous. A debt consolidation loan is great for simplifying multiple debts into a single facility. You can repay them at a lower interest rate and longer tenure to save on monthly instalments and have more disposable income.

Try this personal loan calculator to help you compare interest rates and monthly loan repayment. https://go.shopple.co/spbh0y

3. Shop Sales

The holiday season is the ideal time to purchase new home, office furniture or many other supplies. Everything is on sale, including apparel, laptops, and furnishings, and never overlook the clearance racks. Try using coupons, vouchers, cash-back options, e-wallets or even holiday deals to drastically cut your purchasing expenses.

Check out the best online shopping deals at https://go.shopple.co/sp9g4l

4. Budget, Budget, Budget!

Set aside time each week to analyse your finances, manage your budget, and create a plan. You should pay your bills (although the majority should be set up for auto-pay), update and check your budget, then attend to any other financial matters during your money date. You can start by adding a fun, exciting element to your financial life to help you stay engaged over the long term by referring to this designated time with your money as a “date.” This is to associate budgeting with something more positive, as it may be challenging initially, but good things always take time.

5. Eat more home-made meals

Eating out is expensive, but did you know that small purchases like coffee and pastries can have a significant negative impact on your entire spending plan? Imagine all the different ways you may cut costs from your food budget when you consider that the average person spends 20 ringgits on a cup of coffee in Kuala Lumpur, adding up to more than 1000-ringgit yearly. Even on lazy days, many inexpensive, 4-ingredient dishes can be made in advance. You may save a tonne of money on food each month by making even these minor improvements.

6. Start a side job/hustle

One of the key determinants of long-term wealth accumulation is income. After all, it is very challenging to save for your financial future if you don't make money. Therefore, if your salary level prevents you from saving as much as you would like to, concentrate on finding ways to eventually raise your earning capacity. There are numerous free online courses available, and anyone can learn new skills by just viewing YouTube videos as knowledge is priceless. An additional approach to this, is through side businesses. Find a side hustle to earn additional income besides your 9 to 5 job, this could be by freelance writing, grab deliveries, online marketing and many more.

7. Get creative when travelling

If you know how to manage your money, know visiting exotic locations does not have to be expensive and you don't necessarily need to win the lottery to travel the world either. Here are just a few suggestions on how to travel on a budget, including avoiding peak travel times, choosing accommodations wisely, planning ahead for flights, or even taking advantage of the public transportation there. Take risks! Remember if you do take the time to plan your trip, estimate your expenses, download a virtual wallet of money-saving apps, and also take the extra steps using points or cash back rebates to lower your out-of-pocket costs. Most importantly, enjoy yourselves.

8. Do NOT overspend

While “wanting it all” is perfectly acceptable, problems can occur when you “want it all now.” This one might seem obvious, but spending more than you have is simple, especially when sweet payday arrives and the desire to shop for everything is strong. However, living paycheck to pay check is dangerous because it’s almost a guarantee that your car will break down or that you’ll incur a significant unforeseen medical expense in the coming months. Since you can never really predict what the world will throw at you at any time, being frugal when you do have the money will not harm anyone.

The House of Guinness revolution

Guinness Malaysia grabbed the attention of fans from all walks of life with the launch of House of Guinness back in July. The one-of-a-kind event introduced Guinness Draught in a Can into the Malaysian market, in a fully immersive and experiential way. Lovers of the brew got to discover the magical innovation behind the latest entrant of the Heineken Malaysia Berhad portfolio, all the while taking their usual drinking experience to the next level.

When fans arrived at the location, they had to earn their taste of Guinness Draught in a Can by successfully completing three missions. After learning about the history and evolution of Guinness, guests were sent off to complete their first mission with the hint ‘The Widget is the Key’, where they had to grab the right widget in a blower room. This is where the nitrogen widget – a white plastic ball filled with nitrogen gas inside each Guinness Draught in a Can - came to play.

They were then ushered to their second task, ‘Activate the Widget’ - a highly Instagrammable mission - evoking the magic of this innovative product with a light show representing the widgets and nitrogen. Lastly, the ‘Release the Nitrogen’ mission saw fans stepping into a giant Guinness Draught in a Can. Within the can, they had to release the nitrogen to experience the iconic surge and settle that gives Guinness its cold, creamy head. In the end, those who successfully completed all three missions were awarded the title of Guinness Innovation Expert and their first sip of Guinness Draught in a Can.

In the span of eight weeks, the House of Guinness saw a total of 14,580 visitors, including members of the media, influencers, and lovers of Guinness coming together to celebrate and welcome the brew into the Malaysian market. Their attendance has set Guinness Malaysia on fire across various social media platforms, with a total of 6.6 million reach. The campaign’s PR efforts also garnered earned media coverage with a score of 97% on the Media Quality Index (MQI), and 77 million PR impressions to date.

“We invited Guinness lovers as well as new drinkers to immerse themselves in the House of Guinness with its unique experiences. Through this call to adventure, fans learned about Guinness Draught in a Can in a playful way, and visually got a taste of why this product is so innovative. The experience was curated to resonate with the passion points of Millennials and Gen-Z of the legal drinking age. The amazing response and turnout are a testament to the brand’s ambition,” said Shaun Lim, Marketing Manager of Guinness Malaysia.

With the collaborative effort from all stakeholders and agencies, including Sambal Lab, who was the key driver for the concept, strategy, design and build, creatives, and implementation of the House of Guinness, the brand was able to introduce Guinness Draught in a Can to the Malaysian market in a disruptive way. The good news is, this is not the end as Guinness Malaysia will be back with even more reasons to celebrate in conjunction with International Stout Day 2022. Look out for more updates in the coming weeks.

All activities at the House of Guinness were conducted in full accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures set by the government. Levi’s Gets Scary With Universal Monsters For Fall 2022

WHAT would Halloween be without something to give you a few goosebumps? A spine-tingling monster or two is exactly what’s needed during the scary season. And Levi’s has just the thing thanks to a new collaboration with Universal Monsters, the collection of original horror films from Universal Pictures that brought you Frankenstein (1931), The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), and The Mummy (1932), three legacy films that inspired an entire cinematic genre.

For Fall 2022, the icons of horror meet icons of style in a brand-new collection that celebrates some of the greatest monsters to ever appear on the silver-screen. The Universal Monsters x Levi’s collection features a lineup of denim, tees, sweats, tops & accessories that combines classic Levi’s silhouettes with archival graphics & text from the original posters of these iconic Universal Pictures films. It’s a collaboration that’s as memorable as the movies that inspired it.

Essentials from the collection include a black rinse Levi’s Trucker with a back graphic of Frankenstein’s monster, a white Chore Coat covered in images from all three of the films, a black Crew Sweatshirt with a graphic of the original poster for The Bride of Frankenstein, and a hoodie with an all-over print featuring all of the Universal Monsters. There’s also a white Stay Loose Carpenter pant with Monster graphics, an all-over print Jogger, plus a black rinse 501 jean with a giant graphic of The Bride of Frankenstein. Finishing off the collection are a range of tees and accessories—including a Beanie, a Bucket Hat, a Tote, and a Levi’s Sling bag—featuring graphics from the films.

Each piece in the collection mixes a color scheme of black & white, along with some pops of neon yellow & green. Highlights include clean lines, sharp graphics plus surprise details like glow-in-the-dark prints & sundries that come alive at night! As an ode to the silver-screen trifecta, co-branded elements include a special-edition back patch in black & white, a black & white Levi’s tab, plus a black & white woven neck label—all which glow-in-the-dark.

Almost a century after their release, these three cinematic masterpieces are still a chilling adventure for any Halloween movie night. And, as it turns out, a perfect graphic approach for the ultimate dedication to Hollywood’s golden era of horror, made modern.

The Universal Monsters x Levi’s collection launches in Malaysia on October 3rd and will be available for purchase at the following stores:

● Levi’s KLCC

● Levi’s The Gardens

● Levi’s Pavilion KL

The tradition of Kabuki theatre inspires two new Presage creations

Ever since its introduction in 2020, the creative combination of Japanese culture and modern design has been a central feature of the Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series. Today, two new creations join this series and pay homage to the enduring longevity of Kabuki, a Japanese form of theatre that has its roots in the 17th century Edo period and is still popular today.

These watches have been designed in collaboration with Ebizo Ichikawa, one of Japan’s most prominent and influential Kabuki actors.

Reaching back into the history of Kabuki

The two new creations express the artistry of Kabuki in every detail. The dials incorporate the Japanese hemp leaf pattern known as Asanoha, which has been used in the fabric of Kabuki costumes for centuries. Partly thanks to the popularity and influence of Kabuki actors, the Asanoha pattern has long been highly favoured in Japanese fashion and design.

The dial’s reddish-brown persimmon colour is known as Kakiiro and is a traditional Japanese colour that originated with the Ichikawa family who first used it generations ago in their Kabuki costumes. Still today, Kakiiro remains a Kabuki favourite. The dial edge is a darker shade so that the gold colour hands and indexes stand out clearly.

The watches are offered with a leather strap whose back is also Kakiiro. This is a subtle nod to the Edo period when it was forbidden to wear vivid colours in public and so they were only used on the reverse side of garments.

A sharp and modern execution

Both watches share the same crisp and angular case design that gives the series its distinctive and modern look. The indexes are textured on the top and polished on the sides so as to create a sharp and contemporary feel. The hour and minute hands are coated generously with Lumibrite to enhance legibility even in dark conditions.

Both watches are powered by Seiko’s high-performance 6R series movements. The first offers Caliber 6R21, which has day, date and power reserve indicators at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions respectively. The second offers Caliber 6R35, which delivers a power reserve of 70 hours. The crystal glass is a sapphire with an anti-reflective coating and both versions are 10 bar water resistant.

The new creations will be available as limited editions of 2,000 from October 2022 at the Seiko Boutiques and selected retail partners worldwide.
