Reducing environmental impact through solar energy

Carbon neutrality solutions provider, NEFIN Group announced its partnership with global snacking giant, Mondelēz International (Malaysia) to install solar panels on the roof of its manufacturing plants in Shah Alam, Selangor and Prai, Pulau Pinang. Having pioneered several industrial rooftop solar systems for multinational companies across Asia Pacific, the partnership is set to accelerate Mondelēz’s sustainability efforts by reducing its environmental impact through renewable energy.

“These manufacturing plants in Shah Alam and Prai are NEFIN’s first two photovoltaic installation projects with Mondelēz International in Malaysia, after our first successful partnership with Mondelēz International (Thailand) in Lad Krabang. Talks for other similar projects in Southeast Asia are underway, and we are working closely with Mondelēz to achieve sustainability in their manufacturing plants,” says Mr Chong Bor Hung, NEFIN Group’s Head of Business Development and Managing Director (Malaysia).

Ms Narmeen Khan, Managing Director of Mondelēz International for Malaysia and Singapore, commented, “We have transparent sustainability goals to achieve by 2025, and are committed to scaling up our sustainability efforts to deliver meaningful change. Following the project at the Shah Alam plant, we have also just awarded the solar panel installation project for our manufacturing plant in Prai to NEFIN for the next phase in Malaysia. This partnership with NEFIN is progress towards our goal of creating a sustainable future for snacking and will help us reduce our end-to-end absolute CO2 emissions.”

As a global leader in snacking with operations in more than 150 countries, Mondelēz International is paving the way to a new more sustainable future, by creating snacks the right way for both people and the planet to love. In Malaysia, it owns two manufacturing plants – a chocolate plant in Shah Alam manufacturing Cadbury Dairy Milk, and a biscuits and salty snacks plant in Prai manufacturing Twisties, Jacob’s, and Chipsmore.

The project with NEFIN in Malaysia further builds on Mondelēz International’s existing targets set in 2020, developed to contribute to combatting climate change. The installation of 1,266 solar panels at the Shah Alam plant and 1,754 solar panels in Prai aims to offset 29,000 tons of CO2 over the next 25 years, equivalent to planting around 146,800 trees. Accumulatively, the plants are estimated to produce 1.8 million kWh of energy in the first year alone, with the company potentially saving up to RM11.18 million over the 25 years period.

In addition to their energy-saving initiatives, Mondelēz International (Malaysia) is also a founding member of the Malaysia Recycling Alliance (MAREA) have collectively pledged to recycle a minimum of 25% of their members’ packaging volumes by 2025. Through both of its manufacturing plants in Malaysia, Mondelēz also reported a combined reduction of water consumption by 18.6% and waste by 11.3% in 2021 over the previous year.

For multinational companies with a presence across the Asia Pacific region, NEFIN’s broad network of local partners across the region is positioned to simplify the process of delivering solutions across borders. This has contributed to its success in delivering over 3,000MW of utility-scale, commercial, and industrial rooftop solar systems regionally in its combined portfolio.

REDtone, a company that lives by its core values

ONE company that is putting its values into practice is REDtone Digital Bhd. Established in 1996, the company has a knack for attracting employees. And, it has a proven track record in retention too, with most managerial staff staying for 15 years or more.

Hence, it’s no surprise that REDtone is one of Malaysia’s most respected and leading home-grown providers of integrated telecommunications and digital infrastructure services for organisations. It has a dedicated workforce of more than 350, half of whom are skilled staff such as engineers, research and development, technical and customer service personnel.

CEO Lau Bik Soon says at the heart of REDtone are its three core values – Learn and Innovate, Flexibility, and You Can Count On Me. Together, they illustrate the relationship it has built with employees and clients.

“Learn and Innovate means we cultivate growth and innovate mindsets. We invest in our employee’s career development and well-being. Each of them has to complete 40 hours of training, which makes up part of their key performance index (KPI).

“We fostered innovative thinking and creativity in our workplace. We created a ‘chill room’ with a garden theme that allows our employees to discuss new ideas in a more relaxed environment,” Lau says.

Where “Flexibility” is concerned, it is all about being responsive in business decisions and customising solutions. Speed is key. REDtone’s office set-up consists of an open workplace with island workstations to foster a collaborative working environment. This allows teams to sit together from project planning to the end of deployment.

“Even our pantry is designed with fewer fixtures and more space for festive celebrations, training and meetings. REDtone believes since our employees work hard, they need some fun too – whether it is a round of ping pong during lunchtime, or participating in badminton, bowling, futsal or teambuilding after office hours,” he says.

As for “You Can Count On Me”, Lau says it epitomises the very core of the company’s accountability to colleagues, customers and stakeholders. Taking the Customer Care Department as an example, he says the team consists of highly trained frontliners to meet the service demands of customers 24/7.

“With our state-of-the-art, in-house developed network monitoring and ticketing reporting systems, we can mobilise technical support for our nationwide enterprise customers, as well as engineering services for the large-scale government projects that we have successfully implemented over the past 10 years for the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission, state governments and service providers,” he says.

REDtone recently received the Highest Growth In Profit After Tax Over 3 Years and Highest Return On Equity Over 3 Years awards at The Edge Malaysia Centurion Club & Corporate Awards 2022. These prestigious awards are a reflection of its strong culture ad resilience.

Lau says: “We could not have received the awards without our employees and customers as they are the focus of our businesses. We are excited at our continued growth, so our “people first” culture is here to stay. Business success is all about people. We will continue to invest in talent retention and development while welcoming young talents to join our big family.”

MSU widens access to higher education

Lifelong learning refers to the process of gaining knowledge and learning new skills throughout your life. Many people continue their education for personal development and fulfilment, while others see it as a significant step toward career advancement.

As one of the national Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) centres, Management and Science University (MSU) offers breakthrough ways for working adults wishing to further their studies. A wide range of programmes is offered with the student’s convenience as well as their educational and professional backgrounds in mind.

With ten locations including Sabah and Sarawak for potential candidates to take the APEL Aptitude Test as the non-conventional pre-qualification for entry into higher studies, MSU currently offers APEL (A) and APEL (C) at T-3 (Certificate), T-4 (Diploma), T-6 (Bachelor’s degree), and T-7 (Master’s degree) levels.

Introduced and approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), APEL widens access to higher education for adult learners who are richly work-experienced yet lack academic qualifications.

APEL (A) or Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning allows working professionals with a direct pathway towards higher education without prior formal educational qualifications. It is a systematic process that involves the identification, documentation and assessment of prior experiential learning to determine the extent to which an individual has achieved the desired learning outcomes, for access to a programme of study and/or award of credits.

Otherwise, APEL (C) or Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning via Credit Transfer allows the assessment of credits against matching modules in a programme of study. The APEL C pathway provides credit transfer for entry into diploma programmes right up to PhD. Once an APEL C applicant’s competency level is determined, those credits can shorten his or her entire study duration considerably, saving time and money.

An applicant presenting only SPM for university entrance application, for example, would usually qualify for diploma studies only. With APEL C, it’s possible to pursue a bachelor’s degree directly.

Another flexible option for the adult learner to pursue their education is a micro-credential programme. Its offer offers industry in-demand programmes that provide flexible and made easy learning assessments that shall fulfil his or her needs for comprehensive education in preferred areas of study. These stackable programmes will allow for exemptions into academic programmes at MSU.

MSU APEL Centre is managed by the MSU Continuing and Extended Education Centre (CEdEC). It was established with the aim to excel at providing continuing education in tandem with society’s current needs. Promoting lifelong education, CEdEC offers programmes that suit best those in need of flexibility in the scheduling and overall conduct of the teaching and learning experiences.

As professional adults in the working world or self-managed professions, the demands to balance work and study are an everyday struggle, be it financially, personally, or professionally. Keeping up with the pace of the industries’ evolving scenarios, MSU is providing opportunities by offering flexible learning modes and programs.

Blending technical vocational education and training (TVET) with traditional academic curricula, MSU enhances competencies with industry internship, community and creative entrepreneurship, as well as global exposure; empowering MSU graduates with the well-roundedness desired and sought after by employers.

Among the best in the region, the University’s programmes of study are meticulously crafted to enhance graduate potential, producing graduates that are a popular pick among employers.

MSU comprises the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, the Faculty of Business Management and Professional Studies, the Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering, the International Medical School, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Education and Social Sciences, the School of Hospitality and Creative Arts, the School of Graduate Studies and the Graduate School of Management.

For a full range and information on flexible programmes offered at MSU, please call 03-5521 6868, email enquiry@msu.edu.my, or visit www.msu.edu.my

A commitment to sustainability

Built on the foundation of sustainability and doing well by doing good, Sunway Group has ensured that its entire ecosystem, including Sunway Malls are key drivers of its mission to protect the earth and build a sustainable future.

In conjunction with the Global Day of Action for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) on 25 September, Sunway Malls together with Sunway REIT is raising awareness on the importance of upholding its commitment to its six sustainability initiatives, namely green leasing, sustainable operations, green procurement, waste management, community building and urban farming. With the initiatives, Sunway Malls is able to embrace and adopt the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework in line with its aspirations and goals of making the world a better place for future generations.

From 10 Sept to 2 Oct 2022, Sunway Malls will run the ‘Together for Good’ campaign to further reiterate its commitment to environmental and social UN-SDGs for the betterment of society. During the campaign, shoppers can participate in various on-ground activities and workshops that promote eco-friendly living and later carry out these sustainable practices in their own homes and daily lives.

As one of Southeast Asia’s leading conglomerates and a market leader in the shopping malls industry, the Group and Sunway Malls recognize the unique position we are in to make a lasting impact on the lives we touch. We communicate our commitment to sustainability to all our stakeholders and involve them in our journey towards building a sustainable future for all. At its launch, HC Chan, Sunway Malls & Theme Parks CEO shared that the malls had a holistic approach to involving its partners, employees and consumers in their sustainability journey. “Sustainability is not only the responsibility of one but all.

By making the right choices in our daily lives, we are making the right decision for a sustainable future. We envision a future for Sunway Malls that is not only green but also a model of smart sustainable development so that the world is a better place for future generations.”

Currently, Sunway Malls have identified eight specific UN-SDGs that they can actively contribute in, namely Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being; Goal 4: Quality Education; Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation; Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy; Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities; Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production; Goal 13: Climate Change and Goal 17: Partnership for the Goals.

Sunway Malls acknowledges the need to work hand in hand with all parties to bring about change that matters and has thus ensured that sustainability is practised across all its retailers, stakeholders and encourages it amongst consumers as well. This includes a continued focus on six key initiatives of sustainability.

Green Lease and Green procurement

Sunway Malls is the first amongst all malls in Malaysia to adopt green leasing as part of its commitment toward more eco-friendly implementations that benefit not just the shoppers, but also the environment. This includes aligning with Malaysia’s Green Procurement to catalyse sustainable consumption and production of green technology-based products and services. Deploying Green Lease uses a 3E approach: Educate, Encourage and Enforce. Sunway practices responsible sourcing and procures goods that encourage sustainable habits – beginning in 2023, Sunway will select suppliers, contractors and vendors who share similar values to be its business partners in the coming years.

Waste Management

Sunway Malls practices and promotes recycling, food composting and also deploys SDG-compliant fittings for lighting and water to ensure that there is little to no wastage of resources. Rainwater harvesting is practised to supply water across Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, and Sunway Malls has embarked on partnerships with organisations such as Kloth Cares that promote the usage of excess fabric to be turned into everyday items. The malls have committed to reducing single-use plastic in all areas, and also ensuring 30% of all festive decorations must be fashioned from recyclable materials. With the Food CPR initiative, Sunway Malls has been composting 500L/500kg of food waste daily, encouraging a circular economy and diverting waste from landfills and reducing greenhouse emissions. The malls are also working closely with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to reduce paper wastage.

Sustainable Operations

Sunway Malls is committed to transforming into low-carbon sustainable malls that includes having green building, renewal energy source, able to reduce emission and many more. Hence, over the years, the malls have adopted and adapted various innovative practices to increase efficiency, productivity and save cost in order to operate sustainably. This includes efforts such as launching a cashless and contactless Sunway Smart Parking system, the first Internet of Toilets system in Malaysia, as well as the usage of solar panels to generate clean energy instead of relying on coal-generated energy.

Community Building and Urban Farming

Shopping malls are an integral part of the community, and Sunway is always looking for ways to give back. When the COVID-19 vaccines reached our shores, Sunway offered various amenities rent-free to carry out vaccinations to support the nation’s goals of herd immunity. To battle food insecurity, the Food for Thought Programme encouraged members of the public to donate food items was carried out across the malls. Food banks and donation drives have also been carried out to support the B40 community and flood victims.

Furthermore, the autism community and their caregivers can also make use of the Autsome rooms and areas when they visit selected Sunway malls. The recent launch of The Farm, an urban farming hub in Sunway Pyramid and its accompanying green bazaar provide shoppers with even more sustainable living choices. There will also be an upcoming initiative to help the underprivileged have better reading accessibility through the Sunway READ Library Project.

Shoppers can continue to look out for even more sustainability-related initiatives led by Sunway Malls in the remaining months of the year, as the malls look ahead to ensuring a sustainable future by walking the talk in this area.

Protecting the environment

MagnumCares held a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Tree Planting campaign involving more than 80 Magnum employees with a commitment to improving environmental conservation efforts. Magnum empowers its employees through Volunteerism as a responsible corporation. As a responsible corporate company, Magnum has been advocating the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices with our staff participating in various programs to better serve the community.

This CSR activity, led by Mr Krian Upatkoon, Executive Director of Magnum 4D Berhad and Datuk Chan Chee Fai, Magnum Group Chief Commercial Officer, was made successful by the active participation of Magnum employees who had planted more than 200 plant seedlings along the borders of the 12-hectare public park at Pantai Eco Park, Kuala Lumpur.

Datuk Chan added, “To ensure the success of this CSR program, MagnumCares will collaborate with Malaysia Nature Society (MNS) to monitor the trees’ growth and survival over the years. This is our first of many collaborations with MNS, an NGO that has pioneered in making a difference through habitat conservation and environmental education since 1940.”

The issues of greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide emission are becoming increasingly severe in recent years. Planting trees will help Mother Earth to mitigate such negative impacts and aid our environmental sustainability.

“We hope this initiative will bring in other NGO partners to protect our environmental heritage for the generations to come. We are proud to say that with our employees’ participation, we have helped to revitalize the park’s surroundings with greenery.”

“MagnumCares aims to plant up to 600 trees at the same place by the end of 2022, in hopes of conserving the planet through planting more trees for a better environment. We are glad to contribute to the national tree-planting campaign and we look forward to future initiatives supporting the cause,” he said.

Magnum Group’s CSR wishes to further advocate the concept of environmental conservation, which will inspire various socio-economic development opportunities such as networking and educational activities for the betterment of our society and the environment. It is also part of Magnum’s commitment to enabling social sustainability projects in supporting our cause to give back to the community.

Celebrating legends

Carlsberg has once again scored high in celebrating and hosting football punters at an adrenaline-filled football viewing party and autograph session with two Liverpool FC legends in its recent Carlsberg x Liverpool FC LEGENDary Experience held at Plaza Arkadia. Charting its stand as the beer of choice for every football occasion, Carlsberg had gone the extra mile to deliver on its promise of bringing the heart and soul of football to life.

With the longest-standing partnership in Premier League history, Carlsberg and Liverpool FC celebrate the spectacular energy of sports and camaraderie in conjunction with its 30th anniversary since 1992. This milestone was commemorated globally, and in Malaysia, local Liverpool FC fans were awe-struck by the exciting introduction of the coveted Carlsberg Liverpool FC Legends Edition exclusive 6-can pack, depicting the jersey designs of six of Liverpool FC’s phenomenal icons, who are Ian Rush, John Barnes, Sami Hyypiä, Robbie Fowler, Jamie Carragher and Luis Garcia.

The Carlsberg x Liverpool FC LEGENDary Experience was an evening memorialised forever. Footies were treated to a slew of activities where they had their face painted, got their airbrush and sticker tattoos of the club symbols as well as action photos taken at the 360 spin-cam. They also showed off their fancy footwork at the ‘Kicks of Glory’ and ‘Golden Glove’ game stations where winners bagged themselves the Carlsberg Liverpool FC Legends Edition exclusive 6-can pack and Carlsberg Liverpool FC money-can’t-buy jersey. The clincher however was the fact that Kopites were given the opportunity to watch a game between Liverpool FC and Bournemouth FC alongside the team’s legends, Sami Hyypiä and John Barnes, who had once commanded the roars of fans around the pitch themselves.

“There is something very special about the bonds of football and Carlsberg. Leveraging on Carlsberg’s global partnership with Liverpool FC, we, here in Malaysia, have been looking forward to celebrating our commitment to football fans by providing the best experiences for every football occasion. Through the Carlsberg Liverpool FC Legends Edition cans, the special appearances of two living legends of the game and with today’s stadium-replica live football viewing showcase, we are confident that we continue to animate the passion of football, especially for Liverpool FC fans,” commented Stefano Clini, Managing Director of Carlsberg Malaysia.

Like every great football party, the evening kicked-off with throngs of fans streaming in early to get ready for the excitement that was about to hit the big screen. The courtyard of Plaza Arkadia, which reflected a sea of red, was decked out in true Anfield match-day style with game booths and loads of Liverpool FC fans clinking their cans of Carlsberg Danish Pilsner and Carlsberg Smooth Draught in the air.

The event soon rolled into high gear with dynamic vocals from SAB Acappella & Friends, which then erupted into applause and cheers as football icons Sami Hyypiä and John Barnes made their way to the stage.

Carlsberg-cum-Liverpool FC fans then quickly gathered as they were rewarded with a meet and greet and photo-taking session with the LEGENDS before the curtain raised on the first match of the evening.

The atmosphere at Plaza Arkadia replicated a close representation of the football fever that typically engulfs the stadiums of the Premier League, as Carlsberg continues to deliver the best viewing events in town with immersive activities, entertainment and matches, ticking all the boxes of a football enthusiast. The getup, such as the overall décor, game stations and locker room replica will also continue to be housed at Plaza Arkadia from 28 August to 3 September 2022 for football lovers to enjoy.

For those who could not pop over for the recent Carlsberg x Liverpool FC LEGENDary Experience held at Plaza Arkadia, you can still stand a chance to win the limited-edition keepsake cans when you purchase six full pints, 10 half pints, two buckets or one tower at your favourite bar or when you spend a minimum of RM20 at convenience stores or RM30 at super and hypermarkets and 99 Speedmart on either Carlsberg Danish Pilsner, Carlsberg Smooth Draught or Carlsberg Special Brew.

Consumers can also get the set for free when they buy RM300 worth of Carlsberg Danish Pilsner, Carlsberg Smooth Draught or Carlsberg Special Brew at super and hypermarkets and 99 Speedmart, official Carlsberg’s online stores.

Sarawak woman hits RM13.59m Magnum 4D Jackpot

A lucky woman from Sarawak has just won Magnum 4D Jackpot 1st Prize amounting to RM13.59 million. The homemaker has always been purchasing random lucky numbers according to her institution and lucky inspiration in every draw. She learned to play Magnum 4D Jackpot in 2016.

The lucky winner played the 4D Jackpot by purchasing a System-10 ticket. The winning numbers 9933 (2nd Prize) and 6190 (3rd Prize) were inspired randomly by her intuition. “I personally do not fancy any specific numbers when I go to purchase the ticket. I always buy numbers randomly, for example, receipts, signboards, RM notes serial numbers, random car numbers; but what makes me have a strong sense to purchase the numbers is when it comes into my mind repetitively.”

A regular Magnum customer for over 20 years, this is the most prosperous winning experience in her life. “I am the only family member who buys lottery numbers, and I always like to switch different types of Magnum products every week. On that day, I decided to buy Magnum 4D Jackpot. During the result day, I browse through Magnum 4d website and initially, I thought I won only the 2nd prize. Later, I cross-check, only to realize that the number 6190 that I purchased also come out as 3rd prize number. This is when I realized that I have won the Jackpot!

I asked my daughter to use MyMagnum App to scan my tickets, to confirm the total amount that I have won. When I realized that I have won RM13 million, I was in disbelief till I could not sleep throughout the night.” said the lucky winner.

“Finally, I asked my daughter to contact Magnum Careline for confirmation and verify the draw results on my winning. Only then, did I realize that I have become a multi-millionaire! Ironically, I do not think my dream has come true till the moment I collect the cheque from Magnum office,” the winner said.

“For my future plan, I would have my shares among my family members. My children will be using partial of the fund for my grandchildren’s education funds. I also believe in doing good deeds as I have always been helping those who are in need. Therefore, I will donate some of the money to charitable projects, as a contribution to society. Finally, I will still live my normal life and enjoy my retirement plan, thank you Magnum for changing and improving my life.”

A statement by Magnum 4D representative: “We were always feeling happy for our customers. There were a few lucky streaks with continuous winning stories for the past few draws from our Magnum 4D Jackpot and Magnum Life respectively, Magnum 4D congratulates all winners and hopes that the prize money would bring positive change to their lives. It is easy to play with Magnum 4D!”

Aside from this winning, we have also another 4D Jackpot-1 winner from Pusat Perniagaan Alma, Bukit Mertajam, Penang, who won at RM2.56 million on 27 August 2022. In August 2022, there were 5 Magnum Life 2nd Prize winners, all Magnum Life lucky winners are taking home RM1,000 every day for 100 days.

Magnum is now having [Kungfu Stampcard Campaign] from 22 August till 16 October 2022. Customers may play and stand a chance to win over RM1 million worth of prizes.
