Our emphasis on innovation and quality goes beyond just producing great beer. The Somersby 0.0 alcohol-free beverage gives us the opportunity to deliver new revenue by venturing into an untapped market. It also enables us to be a committed brewer in advocating responsible consumption,” added Clini.

Alibaba brings back LiveNOW programme

Alibaba Group (Alibaba) announced the return of its LiveNOW Training Programme, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative dedicated to the Malaysian community. An extension of the inaugural LiveNOW programme in 2020, the 2022 edition will be remodelled to upskill and reskill more Malaysians, including the B40 group and other underserved communities, and help them unlock potential opportunities in the interactive e-commerce world.

Designed for individuals who are interested in exploring a career as a KOL live-streamer or online video producer, LiveNOW 2022 is also relevant for business owners, especially micro-entrepreneurs, who are keen to host their own livestream or produce their own e-commerce videos to deepen consumer engagement.

Fully sponsored by Alibaba, the training will be conducted in three languages across three Saturdays – 25 June for English, 2 July for Bahasa Malaysia, and 9 July for Mandarin. All training sessions will be held online to accommodate more participants across the country.

“The rise of a mobile-first reality in recent years means that consumer engagement formats such as livestreaming and online videos are increasingly intertwined with commerce,” said Jess Lew, Country Manager, Tmall Taobao World Malaysia, the Alibaba business unit supporting the LiveNOW programme. “Encouraged by the positive response we saw in 2020, we are excited to bring back our LiveNOW CSR programme this year to open the door to potential opportunities in interactive e-commerce wider for Malaysians, as part of Alibaba’s commitment to enabling access to the digital economy for all.”

In addition to the original module about KOL livestreaming covered by LiveNOW 2020, this year’s training will be upgraded to include an online video production component given the increased use of short videos as marketing means in recent years. Participants will be able to learn from expert guest speakers, including coaches from Taobao Malaysia and Lazada Malaysia, as well as KOLs who will share their first-hand experience and insights.

Building on the inaugural LiveNOW training, which successfully incubated 200 livestreaming KOLs, this year’s Programme aims to train up to 300 participants in collaboration with MODEN KOL Academy and with the support from Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), MYNIC Berhad, Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec) and Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC).

Jerry Hang, Founder of MODEN KOL Academy, said: “This year, in addition to livestreaming skills, participants will also learn what it means to be an authentic KOL and how it differs from being an influencer during our full-day programme. Furthermore, with consumers demanding more video content and research showing that the majority of them are convinced to buy a product after watching a video, we will incorporate training in e-commerce video production to build participants’ fundamental knowledge in this field.”

This year’s Programme has also been optimised to create more post-training opportunities for participants to put what they learn into practice. Those who complete the training are welcome to join the LazTalent Community – Lazada’s pool of grassroots livestreaming KOLs. Additionally, they can join Lazada as a Marketplace seller and enjoy the benefits and hands-on support under Lazada Malaysia’s Hari-Harimau New Seller Kickstarter Package. They will also receive an official digital certificate in recognition of their participation.

Online registration for the Alibaba LiveNOW Training Programme 2022 (https://bit.ly/livenow2022) is now open for all Malaysians aged 18 years and above. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

For more details about the training content, a replay of an introductory webinar held today is available on TV3’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUUNs0KA7YM

Get Up, Get Moving and #DoTheLifebuoyFresh

Malaysia’s transition to the endemic phase allows us to return to a near-normal life after combating the pandemic for nearly two years. In our readjustment, the responsibility falls on the nation to implement the lessons learnt during the pandemic, to be health-conscious while maintaining good hygiene practices. In light of this, Lifebuoy Malaysia launched their #DoTheLifebuoyFresh campaign to remind Malaysians to keep active, fresh and germ-free.

The National Health and Morbidity Survey 2019 found that 25% of Malaysians are physically inactive, while previous studies have placed Malaysia as the most obese nation in Asia. The prolonged national lockdown has given rise to sedentary lifestyles, suggesting that physical inactivity may have increased even further among Malaysians.

Considering these staggering numbers, the world’s number one hygiene soap brand, Lifebuoy Malaysia, aims to champion a more physically active lifestyle. Studies have shown that just 30 minutes a day for five days a week of moderate to vigorous exercise gives a good start in leading a healthy lifestyle. In a time when we’re battling an infectious virus that has robbed countless lives globally, we must take charge to play our part in ensuring a safer nation.

Exercise can improve your health and reduce the risk of developing non-communicable diseases like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Furthermore, recent studies have suggested that Covid patients who regularly exercised were the least likely to be hospitalized, admitted to the ICU, and die due to their illness.

Siti Suhaila Abd Hamid, Marketing Manager, Skin Cleansing, Unilever Malaysia, shared that “The prolonged nationwide lockdown has impacted the country’s economic progression and the people. The data has shown that the prevalence of sedentary behaviour in Malaysia is relatively high, with 1.7 million Malaysians living with all three major risk factors of non-communicable diseases. Hence, Lifebuoy conceptualized this campaign to advocate for Malaysians to be active and healthy while maintaining good hygiene practices that keep you feeling refreshed.”

This campaign launch kicked off with a TikTok dance challenge featuring Aaron Chia and Cik Manggis. Aaron is leading Team Lemon Fresh, while Cik Manggis heads Team Cool Fresh. “Malaysians who want to join the challenge need to post a video of them doing the TikTok dance or work out and which team they’d like to join. The first 1,000 participants will stand a chance to redeem an e-voucher worth RM20 for their sports equipment. We hope that this friendly competition adds an exciting factor to the movement challenge, and we look forward to seeing many Malaysians partake in the campaign,” shared Siti Suhaila.

Cik Manggis, Malaysian singer, dancer and actor, explained that “Exercise doesn’t have to be a dreaded task, as it’s often perceived to be. I find that dancing is one of the best workouts as it involves upbeat and fun movements. It also involves music and rhythm, which adds to the thrill of the activity. After completing my dance routine, I opt for Lifebuoy Cool Fresh to help me feel fresh, clean, and ready to start my day. So, if you are feeling ready to take on Team Cool Fresh, join me as I have an exciting dance routine lined up!”

Aaron Chua, Malaysian National Athlete, shared that “As an athlete, I am frequently exposed to heavy sweating and crowds, especially during training and tournaments. That is why I opt for Lifebuoy Lemon Fresh, as it revives and re-energizes me instantly, allowing me to stay fresh and germ-free even with my rigorous lifestyle. Join Cik Manggis and me in this TikTok dance challenge. Not only do you get to have fun, but this could be the first step to leading a healthier lifestyle.”

“As a company, Lifebuoy Malaysia has and will always prioritize working towards the betterment of our planet and society. Unilever’s Sustainable Living Brands communicate a strong environmental or social purpose with products that contribute to achieving the company’s ambition of halving its environmental footprint and increasing its positive social impact. This campaign is another step in the right direction for us in realizing this goal,” concluded Siti Suhaila.

International Café & Beverage Show 2022

The International Café & Beverage Show (ICBS) 2022 will be opening its doors to the Malaysian café and coffee industry (and coffee connoisseurs) from the 19th to 21st of May at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. ICBS is one of the first international exhibitions to return to Malaysia in the wake of the pandemic, reflecting the organiser’s faith in the resilience and vibrancy of the Malaysian coffee and café industry.

Over 150 brands from seven countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom will be exhibiting at the event which is focused on speciality coffee, drinks, F&B products and café lifestyle, as well as furniture, design and technology related to café operations.

In addition, to the exhibition element, the organisers have teamed up with the Malaysia Specialty Coffee Association (MSCA) to host the semi-finals and finals of the 7th edition of the Malaysia National Coffee Championship (MNCC) at the event. The newly crowned ‘national champion’ baristas (in three categories) will go on to represent Malaysia at the World of Coffee Championships (WCC).

Despite a relatively short history of competing on the world stage, Malaysian baristas have already won gold and silver medals at previous editions of the WCC, highlighting the passion and world-class standards that Malaysian baristas are displaying not only for the judges, but also Malaysian coffee enthusiasts.

Mr Christopher McCuin, Managing Director of Montgomery Asia, the show organiser, said, “We are delighted to be one of the first international events returning to Malaysia in the wake of the pandemic. Coffee is one of the ultimate ‘pick-me-ups’ and we hope ICBS will have the same effect on the Malaysian café and coffee industry, as it steams back to life after a few tough years. We are currently expecting over 5,000 visitors representing all elements of the Malaysian café and coffee industry and we look forward to welcoming them all while ensuring they leave the show with freshly roasted insights and ideas from around the coffee world, which they can hopefully deploy to great success in their own businesses.”

“One specific initiative we are very proud of at ICBS is the new ‘Roasters Pavilion’. The Roasters Pavilion has been designed to provide a cost-effective way for many smaller Malaysian coffee roasters (a relatively niche and specialist part of the business) to showcase their unique coffee flavours to as many people as possible during the show – something they probably could not have done without this initiative. We hope that our visitors, will take advantage of this opportunity to try some really creative and innovative coffee roasts produced by homegrown Malaysian businesses,” Christopher concluded.

Ms Yip Leong Sum, President, MSCA, added, “As the national trade association championing speciality coffee, MSCA is very excited to be a part of this event as a strategic partner. The dedication of ICBS to going the extra mile to help Malaysia’s coffee industry is perfectly in line with the vision of MSCA when we first launched Malaysia National Coffee Championship (MNCC), a platform designed for young professionals to showcase their talent, skill and creativity in the speciality coffee industry.”

ICBS 2022 will also play host to the ASEAN Coffee Federation (ACF) Board Meeting on the 19th of May. This mini-event will welcome delegates from Laos, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Myanmar, the Philippines and Australia – thereby playing a small part in helping the recovery of Malaysia’s business events industry in the aftermath of the pandemic.

ICBS 2022 has received strong support from both sponsors and exhibitors. Sponsors include Dankoff Coffee Specialist, Dutch Lady Profesional, Coffex Coffee, Gruppo Cimbali, ChungHo Nais, Vitasoy, Monin, Hario, Marco Beverage Systems, Cafetto, Mugged, Farmskin Malaysia, Staresso Malaysia, Ghostbird Coffee and MONTiGO. Exhibitors will include Bidfood, Starbucks, Global Coffee Resources, London Tea Exchange, Morino Asia, Kikkoman, 103 Coffee Roasters, Stallion Creation, Remedy Drinks, Westrock Coffee, Coffebot and many others.

Other partners for the ICBS and MNCC include the Malaysia Specialty Coffee Association (MSCA), Café Culture, Food Marketing Hub, Artisense Digital and Newsav. The organisers would also like to acknowledge the support of the Malaysian Ministry of Tourism, The Malaysian Convention Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) and the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) for their help and support in ensuring the event proceeded, despite the extremely challenging circumstances over the past few years.

The third and final day (Saturday 21st May - 10am to 5pm) will also be open to consumers who can enjoy a true treat for their tastebuds.

The event is being held in Halls 4 & 5 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. For further information please visit www.Intl-cbs.com.

One step at a time

ASTRO Kasih is raising awareness on education inequality in the country by organising the Walk for Education on May 28, 2022, a 5km walk where participants will carry backpacks through a specially designed trail in Taman Wetland Putrajaya to simulate a student’s journey to school in the remote areas of Sabah and Sarawak every day.

Astro Group CEO Henry Tan explained: “At Astro, we believe that every child has the right to education, and we are committed to use our platform, reach, content and resources to give our children equal access to education for all.”

The walk is inspired by the journey of students living in the interiors of Malaysia, who wake up before sunrise and begin their journey to school on foot. Some even remove their shoes for fear of getting them dirty with mud. Many often leave their school bags behind because they do not want to get them wet when crossing rivers or from any unexpected weather changes.

Helley Jodir, a Bahasa Melayu and Mathematics teacher at SK Magandai in Kota Marudu, Sabah shared some of her students’ morning journey to school.

“Sometimes, I see kids step into the school compound with cuts on their feet and leeches latched onto their skin. Actually, traveling to school on foot is nothing to these students because they are used to it. It only becomes too dangerous for them when it rains. The jungle floor turns slippery and the river rises so the kids have no other choice but to stay at home and miss school.”

Supporting access to education is nothing new for Astro. Astro Kasih, the sustainability arm of Astro Malaysia has been championing education via its Kampus Astro in School programme where over five million students nationwide can access Astro’s learning content.

The Group has also invested over RM126 million since the launch of the programme, to create quality learning programmes such as Tutor TV SK, Tutor TV SMK, SPM Pro+ and more to ensure every child has equal access to education.

Tan said: “We embarked on our journey over 10 years ago, to equip every school with a decoder and TV so that every student would have access to our learning content. Since then, we have built three hostels and last year we worked with Starfish Malaysia Foundation to equip five of their hostels and one youth centre with our services. These hostels have helped the students save over 190,000 hours of daily school commute. Furthermore, whilst staying in the hostels, the children can spend more time on their studies and lesson revisions. We have seen academic improvement of the students in all three hostels with an average increase of 39.4% across all subjects in the UPSR exam from 2010-2019.”

Astro’s unique position gives them the ability to be the voice for good and champion for change and equality for different communities in the country.

Walk for Education promises a fun-filled day for the whole family, including games and activity stalls, as well as mini concerts featuring Timah, Wani Kayrie, Masya Masyitah, Abigail, Irfan Haris, Lil J, Ara Johari and Dem Lepak Boyz.

Celebrating Responsible Gaming Week with Magnum

MAGNUM Corporation is celebrating their annual Responsible Gaming (RG) week from May 9-15, 2022, as part of the company’s annual advocacy campaign in championing healthy and harmonious gaming habits.

In only its second edition since the inaugural RG week, last year, Magnum has committed in providing training with annual self-assessment practices to all their employees, agencies, and operators to ensure they are fully aware and informed with first-hand information about Responsible Gaming. Magnum ensures the entire workforce understands the importance of educating and providing all our players with the most accurate information about Responsible Gaming and the potential harms of gambling addiction.

In conjunction with their RG week awareness, Magnum will distribute and display various RG-related materials in all Magnum outlets, to promote healthy playing habits. Magnum has also ensured all RG information are readily available at all their digital touchpoints including its website, social media platforms, and online app to educate their players better.

In 2021, Magnum had introduced a self-assessment tool to help our players to understand their gaming habits and how to take corrective action where needed, in hopes of reducing excessive gaming habits. This year, they have designed another informative RG tool, which is the Gambling Calculator. This calculator is to help players to understand their own frequency and spending when playing Magnum games, so they can play within their limits.

Furthermore, Magnum has also engaged with Gamblers Rehab Centre (GRC) in Kuala Lumpur which specializes in providing rehabilitation treatment to provide the necessary assistance for the excessive players in Malaysia.

“Recently, we had created a great milestone by being the first and only number forecast operator (NFO) in Malaysia to achieve the level 3 RG certification from the World Lottery Association (WLA). We will continue to uphold our RG commitment and also lead the industry to discharge best practices in Responsible Gaming in Malaysia. Join us to celebrate this RG week by learning more about Responsible Gaming and how to play within your limits. Remember, the bigger play is to play responsibly,” said Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Lawrence Lim Swee Lin.

Magnum is committed in providing a safe and entertaining environment that encourages a harmonious lifestyle for all our players and stakeholders. For more information about Magnum’s RG week, visit the Responsible Gaming section on Magnum4D website.
