Magnum 4D attains WLA’s Level 3 Responsible Gaming Certification

MAGNUM Corporation Sdn Bhd has reached another milestone by becoming the first Malaysian lottery corporation to achieve Level 3 Responsible Gaming certification from the World Lottery Association (WLA).

Magnum takes Responsible Gaming seriously and submitted its application to the World Lottery Association to ensure global best practices are being executed and strictly adhered to throughout the Organisation for customers, partners, stakeholders, communities and employees.

Recently, the WLA International Advisory Panel for Responsible Gaming Certification vetted through Magnum’s application and evaluated all the items submitted as required under the RG Level 3 Framework and found that Magnum had indeed complied and put in place the appropriate controls, procedures and initiatives to warrant the Level 3 certification endorsement.

A statement by the World Lotteries Association reads: “Responsible Gaming is the lottery sector's most critical element of Corporate Social Responsibility. As such, it is essential that WLA member lotteries not only grow their sales and returns to good causes but that they facilitate responsible play. In 2006, the WLA adopted the Responsible Gaming Principles and a Responsible Gaming Framework aimed at protecting lottery players around the world. This effort and commitment ensures not only that our public is protected but also that revenues are sustained for the public good.”

A key element in the RG Framework is to provide annual training to all employees, sales operators and agencies to ensure the alignment of Responsible Gaming practices are well-integrated throughout their business operations. Magnum ensures the entire workforce understands the importance of educating and providing all players with the most accurate information regarding Responsible Gaming to avoid harms of excessive playing habits in the community.

Apart from that, Magnum also launched its inaugural Responsible Gaming (RG) week to promote RG awareness amongst players. In conjunction with its RG week which will be held in May every year, Magnum will distribute and display various RG-related materials in all outlets and practise promoting healthy playing habits. For better awareness, RG information will be made available at all digital touchpoints including its website, social media platforms, and online app.

To educate players better, Magnum has specially designed a self-assessment tool to help them to understand their gaming habits and how to take corrective action where needed. To assist the community, Magnum has engaged with Gambling Rehab Centre (GRC) in Kuala Lumpur which specialises in providing rehabilitation treatment to provide the necessary assistance for excessive players in Malaysia.

Magnum Corporation Sdn Berhad Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Lawrence Lim Swee Lin said: “Magnum is committed to provide an environment which encourages a safe gaming experience to all our players. We have studied other notable worldwide lotteries and are committed to elevate our gaming experience further for the safety of our community. As a private corporation, we are proud to be the first lottery in Malaysia to achieve this Level 3 certification and will continue to lead the industry to discharge best practices in Responsible Gaming in Malaysia.”

Magnum encourages players to continue enjoying a responsible gaming experience. Seek more information from the MagnumCares Facebook page.

Sharing is caring

MR DIY Group (M) Berhad (MR DIY) once again turned to social media to ensure underprivileged communities were not left behind during the recent Chinese New year festive season.

Malaysia’s favourite home improvement retailer activated its popular “You Share, We Donate” campaign, urging Malaysians to like and share its Chinese New Year webfilm entitled ‘Family’ on the MR DIY official Facebook page. The 3.5-minute ‘Family” webfilm depicts the story of three multiracial friends, who remained faithful to the values they were taught at the orphanage they were brought up in, and how they returned to the orphanage to celebrate Chinese New Year. The “You Share, We Donate” effort commits to channel donations equivalent to the number of shares the webfilm generates, to different charity organisations.

The webfilm inspired a total of 1,380 shares on Facebook and received more than 11.8 million combined views on Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok, prompting the retailer to channel a total donation of RM4,140 in cash vouchers (RM1,380 each) to three children’s homes - House of Love, SHELTER - Home for Children, and BRDB Rotary Children Residence. Apart from the cash vouchers, each home received nasal, saliva, and whistle COVID-19 self-test kits, as well as face masks. The MR DIY team also conducted self-testing tutorials and educated the children on how to properly wear face masks.

The “You Share, We Donate” donation was an addition to the MR DIY’s nationwide effort, which saw the retailer distributing more than 1,000 test kits to 23 charity homes across the country recently. Commenting on the initiative, Alex Goh, Head of Marketing, MR DIY Group said, “Every festive season, MR DIY produces a webfilm designed to inspire Malaysians to think of others during the celebration. As a homegrown Malaysian brand, we want to celebrate the unique traits that make us a true community. The “You Share, We Donate” initiative helps spread this message of #kitajagakita. By committing to donate for every share, we also ensure our most vulnerable communities are not left behind.

“We thank Malaysians for supporting this annual cause. Initiatives like this “You Share, We Donate” campaign help ensure more Malaysians have access to pandemic essentials,” added Goh.

Goh added that the retailer was also supporting the national pandemic effort by ensuring the sufficient supply of a variety of pandemic essentials and personal protective equipment at “Always Low Prices”, including nasal, saliva, and whistle test kits, hand sanitisers and face shields.

The “You Share, We Donate” initiative was launched in 2020.

School holiday programmes from The Actor’s Studio Academy

This March school holidays, The Actors Studio Academy at klpac invites children to take flight from their own living room, learn how to be little weather experts and dive into the world of acting with three different programmes for ages 4 upwards starting from 3 March 2022.

Much-loved Preschool Speech and Drama teacher, Vicky Ang, is back with her all-time popular themed holiday programmes for little ones aged 4 to 6 conducted online via Zoom. Learning has never been so fun with these brand new themes that are both interesting and educational. Our days often begin by looking outside to check out the weather. As kids, we were taught to sing “Rain, rain, go away, come again another day...” but is rain really bad? It is never too young to start learning about our climate and weather as well as how it impacts us and our daily lives.

Teacher Vicky’s first programme, “Whether the Weather is...”, will be happening from 3 to 4 and 7 to 8 March 2022, where our little eco-warriors will embark on a mission to do fun activities based on different weathers to complete their mission from the comfort of their living room. If your child was captivated by the story of Peter Pan and Tinkerbell flying off to Neverland, then maybe Teacher Vicky’s “Take Flight!” from 14 to 17 March 2022 will pique their interest. Whether it is in fairy tales, engineering or the animal kingdom, flying has always fascinated us. This creative thematic journey includes activities of taking a flight of various forms, flying of sorts and an escape from magical imprisonment.

A long-time teacher at The Actors Studio Academy at klpac, Teacher Vicky’s passion for nurturing young creative minds is evident by the fantastic energy and creativity she brings to her classes. Through the programme, they will explore and learn various drama and English learning concepts such as pantomiming, poetry appreciation, basic acting skills, reading with expression, play script and writing work.

For teenagers and adults, the Academy will be having a 4-week acting workshop entitled “Acting 101 - Theatre Workshop: The Fundamentals” by Nicholas Alphonso Pereira which will be conducted face-to-face at klpac. For those aged 13 to 18, classes will be from 8 to 11 March 2022 whereas for those aged 18 and above, classes run from 6 to 27 March 2022.

Teacher Nicholas started as an English teacher for poverty-stricken youths back in East Timor and went on to teach woodworking for kids and adults in Penang. He is also a performer with a penchant for dramatic, and bold subject matters. Some notable shows include Jungle Book: The Musical, Forkbeard: A Viking Musical Odyssey as well as multiple roles in a variety of plays by Fa Abdul; Once Upon A Time series of works, Leela Jhansi and Entropy. This full-time workshop will emphasise the basic elements of the craft of acting using the entirety of the human body; expressions, movement, speech and props & theatrics.

The workshop brings everyone to the same level very quickly, beginning with the fundamentals while also filling in the gaps in the understanding of those with and without prior experience. School holiday programmes aside, the Academy’s year-round programme continues to run.

Those interested may register for Semester 2 of its Preschool Speech and Drama Programme for 3 to 6-year-olds and Speech and Drama Programme for 7 to 18-year-olds which begins in May.

Sending Love & Care

Oxy in collaboration with PINTAR Foundation and Watsons have successfully raised RM50,000 through its “Sending Love & Care” campaign to support the education of the underprivileged students in Klang Valley.

Through the month-long campaign, RM0.50 from the sales proceed of every Oxy product sold at Watsons outlet nationwide was channelled towards the education fund that will be used to sponsor extra classes and provide learning materials to the group of 55 B40 students at SK Bukit Pantai in Jalan Chanderai, Taman Bukit Pantai.

PINTAR Foundation’s General Manager Norzalina Masom said she is glad to have collaborated with Oxy to reach out to the underprivileged students amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“These students who are shortlisted for the programme have been struggling to cope with their studies due to many factors including the lack of technological resources such as computer or mobile devices that have hindered them from gaining access to online learning,” she said.

“Now that students are allowed to return to school, we are hopeful that the after-class tuition programme funded by Oxy will help the students gain back their momentum in learning the curriculum and improve their academic performance, especially in the core subjects including English, Mathematics and Science,” added Norzalina.

The after-class tuition programme, which is scheduled to kick start in April 2022, will have students attending a total of 14 sessions per subject held throughout the school year. Additionally, funds raised from the campaign are also used for the setting up of a mini library at the school to promote good reading habits among students.

Speaking at the cheque presentation ceremony, Lim Mei Yuen, General Manager of Rohto-Mentholatum (M) Sdn Bhd said the after-school tuition programme is the first for OXY, but the company hopes to continue extending help to more underprivileged students through a similar programme in the future.

“Education is crucial in helping one to open up multiple windows of opportunities for an individual. OXY together with PINTAR and Watsons through this programme will help the underprivileged children to improve their academics so that they can excel in school and eventually secure a brighter future,” she said.

The ‘Sending Love & Care’ campaign is also part of a regionally consolidated effort from The Mentholatum Company that is aimed at giving back to society.

“This campaign would not be a success without the support from the public. We would like to also extend our gratitude to OXY customers for supporting the brand and this campaign,” added Lim.

Rootbeer & Coffee

The Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Dato’ Seri Haji Aminuddin Bin Harun, commemorated the opening of the newly refurbished A&W Seremban Drive-Thru outlet on Feb 17, essentially giving Seremban residents something truly new and unique to experience in their own city.

Paying homage to A&W’s long-standing presence in Malaysia, the outlet – which has been an iconic landmark in Seremban, creating memories amongst its residents since 1978 - has been invigorated a retro-themed concept featuring a modern take on chic retro design for the outlet.

The new vibe of the restaurant overlooking the beautiful Seremban Lake Garden has been designed to appeal to a new generation of discerning consumers while staying true to the brand’s rich heritage and legacy in Malaysia, dating back to 1963 when A&W became the first fast-food restaurant to be established in the country.

“As generations have changed over the decades, so do consumer behaviour and trends. In this regard, it is only natural that A&W continues to innovate and evolve. We have been on a mission to rejuvenate the brand to make it more relevant and appealing to consumers today, especially the younger generation, who are more astute and discerning than ever before. This modern-retro concept is a product of this new direction, which is not limited to aesthetics alone, but incorporates a total revitalization of our offering to consumers,” said Sophia Ch’ng, Director of A&W Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.

In a historic development in keeping with the inclinations of the younger generation, particularly the trending coffee culture, part of the refurbishment will also include the new world-famous coffee brand Jamaica Blue owned by Inter Mark Resources. This makes the outlet the first in the country to have both an A&W restaurant and a Jamaica Blue.

Drawing inspiration from the vibrant and rich tones of the Jamaica Blue Mountains – one of the best coffee-producing regions in the world - Jamaica Blue will serve patrons of A&W Seremban Drive-Thru with its own specialized selection of coffee beverages, created by a dedicated team of experienced and knowledgeable baristas.

“Together with the incorporation of Jamaica Blue, A&W Seremban Drive-Thru will bring something totally new, unique and refreshing to residents here. Ultimately, our aim is to create the perfect setting and atmosphere for the community here to truly enjoy and call their own, building on an already iconic landmark in Seremban,” said Ch’ng.

Commenting on the move, Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Seri Haji Aminuddin Bin Harun said the newly refurbished A&W outlet with its modern-retro look and incorporation of Jamaica Blue Coffee will further add to the appeal of Seremban as a vibrant city, which is known for its unique food offerings.

“Seremban has always been renowned for its food offerings. I know there are many that make day trips here from all around the country, just to enjoy the food here. And A&W has truly added to this diversity of food offerings with their legendary menu items. I truly congratulate the management for their entrepreneurial and innovative spirit to constantly deliver inventive new offerings and concepts to consumers. I would like to implore other businesses and organisations in Seremban and Negeri Sembilan – especially F&B outlets – to use this strategy of entrepreneurial innovation and creativity to truly make this city and state a renowned food haven,” he said.

Since its introduction in Malaysia in 1963, A&W has etched itself into the hearts of customers young and old who have enjoyed its classic menu items, including flavourful Coneys, tantalizing waffles and the refreshingly iconic A&W RB floats. In more recent times, younger Malaysians have also built a fond affinity with some of newer signatures including the Mozza Burger and A&W’s Golden Aroma Chicken, all made from fresh ingredients to ensure the highest levels of quality.

The introduction of the revitalized A&W Seremban Drive-Thru outlet is just part of ambitious plans for the brand moving forward, which targets to have over 150 outlets all over Malaysia by the end of 2025. Indeed, having served Malaysians for more than half a century, A&W is looking poised to be an entity loved by Malaysians of all ages and walks of life for decades and generations to come.

Learn the culture, history, and pride of Lai Chi Wo

UNWIND in the enchanting historic Hakka village of Lai Chi Wo, flanked by the lush ‘fung shui’ wood and mangrove forest near the New Territories’ northeast coast. The walled village of more than 200 picturesque hillside homes – auspiciously arranged in rows when built more than 300 years ago – is one of Hong Kong’s oldest, largest and best-preserved rural settlements.

The village won UNESCO’s prestigious 2020 Special Recognition for Sustainable Development award for promoting cultural heritage conservation. Stroll along tree-shrouded Lai Chi Wo Nature Trail, home to many species of mammals and butterflies, and take selfies beside a dramatic mangrove forest and stunning coastal scenery.

The Guidebook to Lai Chi Wo

· Lai Chi Wo Cultural Hub

Lai Chi Wo serves as a model of rural revitalisation in Hong Kong. The achievements of its villagers and volunteers, which have been recognised by UNESCO, are recorded at Lai Chi Wo Cultural Hub, inside a restored village house.

Restored farmland is now growing crops including organic rice, turmeric, winter melon and roselle. The hub’s exhibits of old rock specimens, farming tools, household items and traditional Hakka attire, offer visitors a better understanding of the local ecology and history.

· ‘Fung Shui’ Woods

Enclosed at the front by a gated wall, the village’s traditional Hakka homes are flanked by a dense forested area, called ‘fung shui’ woods. Villagers planted the trees, in accordance with the feng shui philosophy of living in harmony with nature, in the hope it would bring them good luck and greater wealth. The restful crescent-shaped woodland is home to over 100 native plant species. Look out for some strange-looking ancient trees, including the century-old Hollow Tree (or Sweet Gum), with numerous holes in the centre of its trunk, the giant Five-Finger Camphor, and the Stangler Fig.

· White-flowered Derris Boardwalk

In the woods near the coastal mangroves forest, you will see giant, python-like vines criss-crossing on the ground. Some hang from trees and form arches. These are white-flowered Derris (Derris alborubra) climbing shrubs, with stems measuring up to 30 cm in diameter, which have taken hundreds of years to grow to this size. The area around Lai Chi Wo is home to an estimated 112 freshwater insect species, and an important habitat for many different birds, butterflies, dragonflies and reptiles, including the endangered Yellow-Breasted Bunting songbird and the rare White Dragontail butterfly.

· Coastal Heritiera and Mangroves

Follow the stream leading out of the village until you come to a freshwater wetland area, which is one of the largest and most biologically diverse in Hong Kong. All eight mangrove species native to Hong Kong can be found in the area, including Coastal Heritiera (Heritiera littoralis) mangroves, some growing to 15 metres in height, which are the city’s largest. The species’ impressive, interweaving buttress root network ensures it thrives in the slippery wet environment. The wetland mudflat areas are also home to beds of seagrass species such as Zostera japonica and Halophila ovalis, which are valuable food and shelter habitats for young coastal creatures including fish fry and crab and shrimp larvae.

· Lai Chi Wo Village

The once thriving and affluent Hakka village of Lai Chi Wo was built more than three centuries ago. Its more than 200 houses, laid out in precise horizontal and longitudinal rows according to geomancy rules, and protected by rustic walls, were home to over 1000 residents, before a sharp drop in population beginning in the 1960s. But it has gained a new lease of life as part of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark and is now a popular destination for hikers and ecotourists. Farmers are back growing rice and vegetables and grazing cows, and some old homes have been transformed into shops and visitor centres. At weekends or on public holidays, you will find village stores and stalls offering a variety of Hakka foods and dishes, such as salty chicken, braised pork and omelettes with preserved radishes, dumplings and chicken congee.

A true sign of prosperity

WITH Chinese New Year still fresh in our minds, it is time to take stock of what is most important in life, and that is our family. So much emphasis has been placed upon the idea of “prosperity” during the festive season, but the word stands for more than just monetary wealth. In truth, love is the greatest prosperity that we can ever attain.

Throughout our lives, we have been enriched by the love and sacrifice shown to us by our family members: our parents, who gave us life and raised us to become who we are today; our siblings, who supported us and shared in our joy and pain; and our significant others, who stood by us through thick and thin.

All of them have played a huge role in shaping our character and helping us to achieve success in our own dreams, and it is now up to us to show our gratitude for all that they have done.

One way that we can reward them for all their effort is by giving them a chance to finally own their dream car. And thanks to Carsome, there is no better time than now to present them with a new set of wheels.

Carsome has a large selection of Carsome Certified cars, which means that they are inspected and professionally reconditioned for quality assurance to give that like-new feel, making them the perfect gift for your loved ones as a way for you to show your gratitude.

Each Carsome Certified car comes with the Carsome Promise, which begins with a stringent 175-point inspection to ensure that it is free of major accidents, as well as frame, flood or fire damage.

In addition, all cars on the Carsome website are listed with a fixed price, meaning there are no hidden fees.

The price includes the road tax, Puspakom inspection fee, ownership transfer fee and loan application fee. This level of transparency ensures that there are no surprises while you make your purchase.

For further peace of mind, Carsome also offers a five-day money-back guarantee on vehicle purchases. You can return the car within five days for a full refund if you change your mind.

Not only that, you also get covered for the first year of owning the car, with a one-year warranty to ensure that every drive is roadworthy.

Heineken Malaysia Berhad (HEINEKEN Malaysia) has continued its winning streak at the Putra Brand Awards 2021 by seizing three outstanding accolades. The company raised their glasses for yet another triple win as Heineken and Tiger Beer won Gold, while Guinness achieved Silver.

These new wins bring the total awards tally to 36 since the inception of the Putra Brand Awards. Commenting on the achievement, Roland Bala, Managing Director of HEINEKEN Malaysia said, “A huge thanks to all our consumers for their amazing support to our brands. Despite the challenges, we continue to invest behind our brands and our people as well as stay connected with our consumers whilst adapting to the new normal. Our achievements were made possible by the team at HEINEKEN Malaysia and our business partners who demonstrated resilience, courage, commitment, and passion to ensure we delivered the best to our consumers. Indeed, we are guided by HEINEKEN’s purpose, which is to brew the joy of true togetherness to inspire a better world.”

Pablo Chabot, Marketing Director of HEINEKEN Malaysia added, “We are proud to once again be recognised at the prestigious Putra Brand Awards, further demonstrating consumers’ trust and preference for our winning brands. At HEINEKEN Malaysia, by putting our consumers at the centre, we enable the creation of innovative, meaningful, and relevant campaigns. The pandemic challenged existing norms and pushed us to be more creative as we strived to connect with consumers whilst delivering premium, world-class experiences just as we’ve been known to do.”

During the year, Heineken was the proud official beer partner of UEFA Euro 2020, which took place from 12th June to 12th July 2021. Through the ‘Enjoy the Rivalry’ campaign, fans were invited to the virtual Heineken Rivalry Stadium to challenge celebrity opponents and outsmart their match predictions to be in the running to win exclusive prizes.

Additionally, with many working from home in the new normal, Heineken® encouraged consumers to work smart and drink smart through the launch of the ‘#NowYouCan’ campaign by giving away 10,000 units of Heineken 0.0 4-can packs, sent straight to consumers’ doorsteps for a refresher while working from home – minus the guilt and minus the alcohol.

Tiger Beer, Malaysia’s No. 1 Beer, started 2021 with a big bang by introducing the ‘Bring on the ONG’ Chinese New Year campaign featuring limited edition festive Tiger Beer and Tiger Crystal cans while enjoying an abundance of ‘ONGSOME’ promotions and giveaways worth more than RM1,000,000.

As a brand that has always championed local street food culture, with roots that go back to being a brand born and raised on the streets of Asia, Tiger Beer launched the ‘Xperience the Xtraordinary’ virtual street food festival, championing local businesses by introducing an innovative experience for digital festivalgoers to purchase limited-edition streetwear and enjoy street food paired with refreshing Tiger Beer - all conveniently delivered to their doorsteps.

Guinness, Malaysia’s favourite and the World’s No. 1 Stout, rolled out a month-long St. Patrick’s celebration. For 31 days in a row, Guinness spread joyful St. Patrick’s spirit to its fans with the Guinness St. Patrick’s Celebration Kits, curated exclusively for fans to catch up on their missed celebrations.

When the lockdown was lifted, restaurants were finally able to welcome guests back for dine-in. Guinness gave family and loved ones an opportunity to reconnect post lockdown through its ‘Ready When You Are’ campaign.

Guinness brought back the renowned STOUTie machines to selected partner restaurants and bars where consumers can print their selfies on top of a cold and creamy glass of Guinness.

HEINEKEN Malaysia is a strong advocate for responsible consumption, and constantly encourages consumers to enjoy responsibly and to not drink and drive through its commercial and marketing activities.
