Catch Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations livestream

THE rapid spread of the Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus has led to the cancellation of most large scale New Year’s Eve countdown celebrations in order to prevent mass gatherings of people.

While everyone understands the need for such precautions, most people couldn’t help but feel disappointed that they would not be unable to watch the traditional New Year’s Eve fireworks at shopping malls, as in previous years.

However, if you find yourself having to stay home tonight, there is still a chance for you to catch some bright and memorable New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Hong Kong – which is in the same timezone as Malaysia – will ring in the New Year with a dazzling light art extravaganza, featuring radiant lights along the entire Victoria Harbour waterfront, a performance by the city’s flagship Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New Year countdown lights on the recently opened M+.

Best of all the Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations will be livestreamed on the Discover Hong Kong’s Facebook page and the Hong Kong Tourism Board’s Youtube channel.

Just tune in at 10pm tonight to see the magic, and ring in 2022 with a bang!

More than a hobby

Fifty-eight-year-old hobbyist and collector Mohammad Ruslan Hussein @ Ruslan Tagan finds fulfillment in his collection. From his diecast car models, restored car, action figures and denim pieces, the retiree’s face shines with pride every time he gets the chance to speak about his finds.

A seven-year journey

The proud owner of a fully-restored Toyota Celica TA27, 1973, Ruslan shares that the entire process took him seven years. He first saw the Celica when he was in secondary school, and set his sights on owning it. “It’s very very difficult to get. In 2007, a friend said he saw a Celica in an old furniture factory in Puchong. So I went to take a look. At that time, it was covered in thick dust. I approached the owner and asked him if he would sell it.” The original owner initially planned to refurbish it for himself but at the time, he also needed the money to get married. Thus, Ruslan got lucky and quickly purchased the car. That same year, he began looking into the restoration process. “I sent the car to the restoration centre and it was quite hard to get the parts, but I managed to get them all. I sourced for parts from Japan, for collectors who sold them to me, and looked for some parts locally.”

Describing the procedure, Ruslan explained that they scraped the paint off the car until the metal was exposed, sandblasted it, removed all parts and wiring down to the shell before moving on to the bodywork. The restorers then began the painstaking process of putting everything back together piece by piece. After seven long years, the project was completed.

“I feel like it is akin to the struggle of climbing a hill – it’s difficult, but when you get up there, the view is fantastic,” he said of the restoration process.

“Now, I use this car as my breakfast car. Every morning, I drive it out. I do not drive it like a regular car because I’m worried people might steal the trimmings – it’s very precious to me.”

Every time he drives the car out, there are people who show his car some form of admiration, be it by taking photos or by showing him a thumbs up. “I am really proud of it. I am really happy,” he reiterates.

However, it was not just a shopper’s impulse that drove Ruslan to purchase the car. “When I bought it, I had it in mind that if I bought a new car, the value would depreciate. On the other hand, the value of this restored car would increase. Also, not many own this car. When I’m on the road, I’m probably the only one driving it. I want to have what not many can have,” he chuckled.

He is also in the midst of restoring a 1964 Mercedes Batman 220S. “That will take quite some time to complete,” he shared.

While others invest in property or shares, Ruslan says he would rather invest in classic cars.

Not just toys

Moving on to his collection of diecast cars, the dedicated collector shared that he still holds a little more than 10 pieces belonging to his father. “The tyres have melted off so I’m in the midst of looking for the parts now. I already got them resprayed,” he said with a slight hint of regret, adding that he should have left the colours as they were to showcase the patina of the models.

“When I was small, I saw my dad owning Dinky’s diecast car models, which were made in England. I liked playing with those cars. When I grew older, I played with Matchbox cars (now Hot Wheels) and I began my own collection”.

When asked how he decides which cars to collect, Ruslan said he looks for iconic pieces from selected car makers in countries renowned in the automotive industry when he travels. Illustrating his point, he explained that he collected Ferrari models from Italy, Mercedes models from Germany, and Jaguar models from England. There are several other models from Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand, to name a few. Some pieces could not be found locally, and he fondly recalls visiting physical stores in different countries and carrying these precious models home in his hand luggage because he was afraid of any damage that might occur otherwise.

“It’s different now - people can order these things online,” he shared. “With my action figures and diecast car collection, my house feels like a toy store sometimes,” he laughed, estimating he now owns over 100 units. “The first 1:18 scale model that I got was a Ferrari. I bought it for RM60 in 1993. Now, some of my pieces are worth more than RM1,000. Now, I can sell off my Mercedes collection for RM 50,000. But if I were to sell it off and get that money, what are the odds that I can ever own these items again?” the dedicated collector said, drawing his joy from knowing that he is the owner of a limited item that is unique to him only.

“The most interesting model to collect is the Mercedes line, because of the interesting design, look and feel. Each model is quite distinctive as well, unlike the Ferrari ones, which look similar.” The Mercedes Batman diecast car is his favourite, as it is the exact model of the car that he is currently restoring. “To me, cars, especially like Mercedes, are a statement,” he says. “It does not necessarily have to be brand new or expensive. It is an icon”. When it comes to upkeep and maintenance, Ruslan says he cleans his collection with makeup brushes. As for storage, the diecast models have to be kept away from direct sunlight and cannot be kept stagnant so he takes the cars out and moves them around from time to time.

An escape

His love for his assortment of treasures clearly shine through when asked how important this passion project is to him. “In life, especially during the working years, you go to the office day in and day out so you need something to take your mind away from work. That is why you need a hobby. This is my escape and it has grown into an investment”.

Being a homely individual, Ruslan finds contentment from being surrounded by the assortment of models he has at home. “I think I would be empty without this,” he muses. “Every night before I sleep, I look at my collection and can fall soundly asleep.”

“These are memories to me, and the items will last forever. I really hope that whatever I have in my collection will be appreciated by my children,” the father of two concludes. Taking a final look at the carefully curated collection, it is not difficult to understand why these items are so precious – the models hold irreplaceable memories of experiences for this passionate hobbyist.

The importance of protein

THERE are about 600 muscles in the human body, each with a specific function like pumping blood throughout your body, keeping the body warm and helping you lift heavy groceries.

Around the age of 30 however, our body begins to gradually lose its muscle mass in a process called sarcopenia.

Because even the most vigilant amongst us often let exercise routines and good diet fall by the wayside as other priorities take precedence, it is easy to chalk our fatigue, dwindling strength and decreased activity level simply to the inevitability of age.

But, do you know that muscle loss happens gradually, often going unnoticed until a major hiccup happens in our health – such as hospitalisation or sickness? The good news is, losing your muscle mass and strength as you age is not an inevitability.

“Maintaining our muscle health is one of the most important things we can do and doing so doesn’t mean hours in the gym. It’s much easier than most people realise. Because protein is a muscle-friendly favourite, start analysing how we consume our protein first,” shares Dr Nina Mazera Mohd Said, Medical Director (Nutrition) at Abbott Malaysia.

The “Pro” in Protein

It is recommended for adults to consume around 30 grams of protein at each meal.

“Since muscle strength and muscle function are correlated, not getting enough protein in our diets can cause our body to tire faster and demotivates people from leading a healthy lifestyle,” says Dr Nina.

While this would give most of us plenty of motivation to fill our plates with poultry, eggs, beans, and other protein heavyweights, it is important to realise; not all protein is created equal.

Eating more protein-source food doesn’t necessarily mean you are getting the good protein in the right amount for your body.

Moreover, older adults need to consume more protein-rich foods than younger adults due to the aging process and spread these intakes across their meals to maximise the benefits of protein.

Protein Matters but Don’t Neglect Other Factors

In addition to protein, good nutrition is the real key to healthy ageing. To ensure there are enough nutrients to meet our bodies’ needs, we need to consume a balanced and varied diet with nutrient-rich foods.

Adequate intake of Vitamin D for example, is extremely important to help reduce the risk of falls and fractures in adults. So, when you take a morning walk next time, don’t be afraid to bask in a little bit of sunshine!

With our body is filled with good nutrients, exercise is equally essential to building and maintaining muscle and strength as we age. An ideal exercise plan includes both aerobic like going on walks and resistance or strength training.

Staying physically active daily by walking or carrying grocery bags is also beneficial. Of course, the more active you are, the more reason to increase your protein that builds and repairs your muscles.

Ultimately, making the moves early can be the best way to have really good health down the road.

“Even if you think you may not need it now, you’re going to need it at some point. Aim to be in your best possible shape and health throughout as early as now, and don’t wait to start the right diet and exercise only when your body starts giving the warning signs,” she concludes.

Animation for adults

Growing up does not mean you have to give up watching animated films. In fact, there are several adult-oriented films that use animation to depict topics that can inspire and provoke thought. Foreign adult films, in particular, add a different quality to the medium, offering a different perspective from what we may be used to. Start popping the popcorn – here are some that are truly worth a watch.

I Lost My Body

I Lost My Body follows a severed hand through the streets of Paris to find its owner, a young immigrant named Naoufel. Equipped with a sentience and consciousness which could rival that of an empath, the hand brings viewers through childhood flashbacks and various obstacles on its way to its destination. We also see the struggles of its owner, who has already been beaten down by life (like most of us past 21), trying to cope with the physical loss of his appendage. The haunting visuals and beautifully-told story make this a film that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

Loving Vincent

This stunning biopic tells the story of 19th century Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh through his artwork – think oil paintings brought to life. Commissioning thousands of oil paintings from 165 artists, the team behind this production helps the audience to relive van Gogh’s life through this tale of crime and mystery. It follows the journey of detective Armand Roulin, who investigates the tormented artist’s death.

Persepolis

Adapted from a two-part graphic novel, this black-and-white animated feature is an elegant coming-of-age story about a young girl, Marjane, growing up in Iran in the 1970s. The daughter of wealthy secular leftists, her parents and their equally liberal friends initially embrace the revolution. However, things quickly change when they realise that the Iran they know is now a hostile place and it is now an Islamic state swarming with moral police. Worst of all, there is a particular group they discriminate against – women. Marjane furthers her studies in Europe, where she experiences first hand condescension and misogyny. She eventually returns to her home country, which is no longer the home she remembers.

Yellow Submarine

Described as a psychedelic tour de force, this animation features dazzling visuals and a rather wholesome storyline. The film explores a paradise called Pepperland, a place of beauty, happiness, and music. All hell breaks loose in Pepperland when it is invaded by the Blue Meanies, an army of music-hating beings, who metaphorically represent everyone bad in the world. The Beatles swoop in to the rescue, making peace with the Meanies and bringing music and colour back to the world with splashes of humour thrown in.

The Secret of Kells

Heavily influenced by Irish folklore, this Oscar-nominated animation marries colours and details together in one enchanting package. It tells the tale of young Brendan, who lives in a remote medieval settlement that is under attack by barbarians. A master illuminator comes from foreign lands with an ancient, unfinished book that holds many powerful secrets. Attempting to finish the book, Brendan sets out on a mission that brings him into the enchanted forest full of mythical creatures. Containing religious tension and paganism, this film explores determination and friendship.

The Triplets of Belleville

The film shows the story of a young boy and his dog who live on the highest floor of a crooked little house in France. His grandmother, Madame Souza, trains him to be a dedicated cyclist. The young man grows up to join the Tour de France, but he goes missing during one leg of the race, with evidence indicating that he was kidnapped. It soon turns out that he and two other competitors were kidnapped by a group who want to employ their skills for criminal reasons. Determined, Madame Souza sets out to look for her grandson with his pet dog Bruno. The duo eventually befriend three elderly women - the formerly renowned jazz trio, The Triplets of Belleville. Enthralling and dark, this is a beautiful tribute to French cabarets and jazz.

Waltz with Bashir

Searing, devastating and disturbing, this animated film relives the moment thousands of civilians were massacred in Palestinian refugee camps during Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon. A Christian militia was responsible for the deaths, and the Israelis did not stop the massacre despite being in control of the militia. Told through the eyes of witnesses, this tale opens with a recurring nightmare described to the director, Ari Folman, by his friend. Folman, who also wrote the film, interviews Israeli army friends who were present, and reconstructs the slaughter through memories, thoughts, the past and the present.

Grave of the Fireflies

This story follows two homeless children from the city of Kobe. Their homes destroyed by bombs, their mother a bomb victim, and their father in the Japanese navy, this film is more of an emotional experience. Profound and thought-provoking, the concept is a simple one - survival. The audience feel for the characters through introspective shots and a look into private moments, making this much much more than a simple animated film.

Carlsberg Malaysia celebrates Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in its business

Embracing diversity is creating an inclusivity in the workplace that enables employees to celebrate each other’s differences in culture, habits, lifestyle, and opinions.

The clock has begun ticking for companies to start advocating equality and ensuring that diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) become an organisational priority. In fact, companies are paying much greater attention to equity and inclusion, even when they are relatively diverse.

Carlsberg Malaysia believes in championing DE&I to better take care of tomorrow and ensure a healthy and thriving organisation. This ties back to the brewer’s founder J.C. Jacobsen’s vision of brewing for a better today and tomorrow, striving to brew better beers with quality, innovation and pride that stand at the heart of moments that bring people together.

“Operating with a diverse workforce has proven to be more crucial for Carlsberg Malaysia’s success today, especially in the depths of the pandemic. Our broad range of ages, backgrounds, cultures, and views allow us to think differently, offer fresh insights and ideate problem-solving in creative new ways,” said Carlsberg Malaysia’s managing director Stefano Clini.

“DE&I is one of the strategic priorities that we aim to bring to life. We believe in the need for collective ownership at all levels in attracting and engaging a diverse workforce for higher innovation, collaboration and performance,” he shared.

The company ensures ongoing communication, awareness and training to embody DE&I at the top of its employees’ mind. Carlsberg Malaysia’s human resources director Pauline Lim shared that the company has outlined and successfully conducted several awareness campaigns and learnings, including unconscious bias awareness and women leadership forums.

“In a traditionally masculine industry, to-date, 63% of the management team are female at Carlsberg Malaysia, from 25% in 2016, which showcases the brewer’s commitment to promote inclusive leadership with diverse representation at all levels right from the top,” Lim noted.

Carlsberg Malaysia is also proud to be a member of the 30% Club Malaysia, a local chapter of the global business-led campaign focused on building an ecosystem of organisations that promote DE&I with emphasis on gender balance within boards and C-suites.

In an effort to balance gender diversity at Carlsberg Malaysia, the Company has introduced a DE&I referral program to further incentivise employees who referred a successfully hired female candidate, on top of the existing referral incentive. This year finds that 36% of all employees recruited through referrals are female, versus 20% last year.

Lim also highlighted that the company has looked into enhancing its Inclusive Policies and Practices to enable employees to feel valued, accepted, and respected in a high performance-based culture such as at Carlsberg Malaysia.

For instance, on top of enabling a working parent-friendly environment through the introduction of family care leave as well as increase in maternity and paternity leaves, Lim noted that the Company has this year implemented enhancements to the existing Flexi Working Arrangements (FWA) including Work-from-home, Flexi Working Hours and also Time Off arrangements.

“This FWA policy aims to support the needs of the employees as they go through different phases in their lives. The Company believes that a flexible workplace will lead to increased levels of employee engagement, health & wellbeing of employees; and ultimately create a high performing workforce who feels empowered and valued,” Lim added.

Out of the eight directors, between the ages of 36 and 55 years, there are three male directors versus five who are female. To enable an inside-out and also outside-in perspective, five out of the eight directors are Malaysians, while the three other directors are from Italy, France and Germany.

Two out of the five Malaysian directors are local university graduates, showing that Carlsberg Malaysia promotes equal opportunity for all, independently from their educational background

Carlsberg Malaysia advocates internal movements to retain its own pool of talents, and to provide opportunities for employees of different ethnicity, race, age group for an internal career move or performance-based promotion. YTD, internal movement versus external hire stood at 68:32.

Come 2022, Carlsberg Malaysia is looking to do more and not only making DE&I a conscious choice, but also an intrinsic value for its people. Lim said: “We will continue to reiterate the importance of DE&I and look into giving equal opportunities and priorities to everyone. We are here to celebrate diversity, celebrate all cultures, going beyond just giving out incentives to attract and retain a diverse workforce. Taking a step at a time, we will extend the unconscious bias training for all people managers in the upcoming year and subsequently for non-people managers in 2023.”

Hunting for hidden delicacies

UNDER the neighbourhood programme launched by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), visitors are given the choice of five unique walking tours that will allow visitors to experience this vibrant location at the ground level, focusing on the cultural heritage of the area, and introducing visitors to an as-yet-undiscovered perspective of West Kowloon, which include little pockets of urban street art.

But no holiday is complete without a taste of the local delicacies, and part of the adventure is hunting down some of the best in local street food. Hong Kong is known for its sumptuous cuisine, and the West Kowloon district is bursting with a variety of traditional eateries, some of which are centuries old. It truly is a foodie’s paradise, and no trip is complete without a visit to one or two of these landmark food shops.

The cultures and traditions that have defined the spirit of Hong Kong’s food culture are perfectly preserved in each of them, and they truly are the heart and soul of West Kowloon.

1. Liu Ma Kee Fermented Tofu Store, Min Street, Jordan

The oldest shop on our list, the Liu Ma Kee Fermented Tofu Store has been serving the community its preserved bean curd for over 100 years, and is currently run by the fourth generation of owners. The shop is famous for making bean products using traditional methods, which are a closely-guarded family secret.

Liu Ma Kee still uses a traditional stone mill to grind soybeans, and its fermented tofu is particularly rich in flavour. Fermented tofu is an acquired taste for those unfamiliar with Chinese flavours, but is a favourite of Hongkongers, both local and abroad. It goes well with lamb dishes, and adds intense umami flavours to all sorts of sauces and marinades. It can even be enjoyed when mixed with plain rice.

Adding to the charm is the old school packaging – Liu Ma Kee’s products are still in glass jars, with a label displaying an image of its founders, the Liu brothers.

2. Mak Man Kee Noodle Shop, Parkes Street, Jordan

Famous for its specialty handmade wonton noodles, Mak Man Kee Noodle Shop is truly a Hong Kong street food success story. From its humble beginnings as a dai pai dong (open air food stall) in 1948, the noodle shop has grown into a global brand, even being recognised under the Michelin Bib Gourmand guide.

Founder Mak Woon-chi originally brought these Cantonese noodles from his native Guangzhou, and opened his first shop right here in West Kowloon. He sold them paired with handmade wontons. For generations, this simple but hearty dish has been enjoyed by generations of Hong Kongers, as well as visitors from all across the world.

3. Kung Wo Tong, Woosung Street, Yau Ma Tei

Steeped in over 2,500 years of history, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has remained almost unchanged for centuries, and is deeply intertwined with the lifestyle of the vast majority of modern Chinese people. In Hong Kong, one type of TCM remedy that is easiest on a first-timer’s palate is the guilinggao, also known as tortoise jelly, which is readily available at Kung Wo Tong. Despite its name, guilinggao is made from herbs, and does not contain any actual tortoise or turtle parts.

Kung Wo Tong has outlets all over Hong Kong, including in Yau Ma Tei, and has been serving its signature guilinggao for decades. The herbal concoction was selected as one of Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage in 2006, and is served either as a jelly with syrup, or in liquid form as a tea. It is considered an effective remedy for detoxing or dispelling heatiness in the body, which usually accumulates after eating too many unhealthy foods.

4. The Woosung Street Temporary Cooked Food Hawker Bazaar, Woosung Street, Yau Ma Tei

Some of Hong Kong’s most interesting eateries are located in dai pai dong, where the set-up consists of a stove, some fold-out tables and a few rickety stools. It is truly one of Hong Kong (and Asia’s) most authentic street food experiences.

The Woosung Street Temporary Cooked Food Hawker Bazaar is one of the most famous dai pai dong venues in West Kowloon, a famous neighbourhood site that is home to 20 hawker stalls selling all kinds of dishes and snacks.

Its unusual name stems from the fact that it was first opened in 1984 as a temporary location. However, 37 years on, it has become one of the island’s most established dining spots. It is continuing to serve the local communities’ appetites, after being closed for several months for some renovation work.

5. Mido Café, Temple Street, Yau Ma Tei

Previously featured in our article here, this picturesque café has served as the backdrop for numerous films and TV shows during its 70 years of operation. The interior design exudes nostalgia thanks to its well-worn coloured windows, mosaic tiles and ceiling fans, which have made it an Instagram darling for visitors from around the world.

Known for being a hybrid combination of cha chaan teng (tea restaurant) and bing suut (ice room), the café has served up both hot and cold drinks alongside light snacks such as cakes and pineapple buns, and is the perfect spot to sit and relax after a long day of exploring the neighbourhood.

To find out what else you can discover in West Kowloon, stay tuned for the final part of theSun’s special feature. For more information, visit discoverhongkong.com.

Feel the Love with Coach

COACH is determined to make the month of December “the most wonderful time of the year”. The global fashion house brand is ringing in the festive season with a lavish bespoke holiday installation at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

Themed Give A Little Love and inspired by a snowy winter park in New York City – the birthplace of the brand – the installation features larger-than-life figures of Coach Holiday animal mascots frolicking in a landscape consisting of a magical tunnel of twinkling lights and a glittery arch, and a festive holiday tree in the centre of it all.

The mascots on display include Rexy the dinosaur, Fuzz the polar bear, Belle the penguin, Holly the deer, Ginger the fox, Paddles the goose, Luna the owl and Spike the hedgehog, who embrace the holiday cheer with their stylish ski gear.

Shoppers will be able to get into the spirit of the season by taking photographs with these mascots, as well as the holiday decor. They can also delight in the sight of a curated giant 3D animation at Pavilion Elite’s LED screen, the largest of its kind. The animation features Coach’s beloved mascots Rexy and Fuzz playing with a New York City taxi cab.

The fun isn’t just outdoors, however. Inside the Coach store, shoppers can not only peruse the latest seasonal collection, but also play the newly launched interactive in-store Snow City game.

In the game, which is also available in a digital mobile version, players must race through the snowy New York City as one of Coach’s Holiday animals, collecting “love” that they they can share with friends – inspired by Give A Little Love, Coach’s message for the holiday season.

At the end of each run, players can share the love collected with friends while the points earned remain with the player, allowing them to unlock more Coach Holiday animal avatars.

Tracked on a digital scoreboard, the “love” collected becomes part of a Global Love Score, allowing players to collaborate and share in a global experience – as part of Coach’s message of love and affection as the greatest gift of all this holiday season.

Locally, for the digital mobile game, the player with the highest score will be eligible to win a Coach bag.

New Coach Ski Collection

The new collection was launched with a campaign starring actress Brittany O’Grady, TikTok star Wisdom Kaye and models Tiffany Guo and Mia Regan.

Coach Ski introduces nostalgic winter sportswear reimagined through the optimistic lens of now. Featuring new outerwear pieces that combine shearling with colorful nylon stripes, and quilted leather bags, sweaters, and snow boots, the collection reinterprets the house’s codes within a new graphic language inspired by vintage finds sourced from Lake Placid and the Adirondacks.

To bring the collection to life, Coach will release a series of images photographed by Zackery Michael. Featuring members of the Coach Family in a snowy landscape, the images capture the free-spirited mood of the collection while celebrating skiing as a fun and nostalgic winter past-time.

In a press release, Coach creative director Stuart Vevers said: “Coach Ski is inspired by winter adventures and the possibilities of tomorrow.

“Joyful and nostalgic, it reimagines our heritage within the bold, colourful language of American sportswear.”

Getting into the pet-tech business

JOJO PET introduces a brand-new pet taxi service in Malaysia and is extending an invitation to investors who are interested to grow the pet-tech business.

“The pet industry has a huge potential for growth with over one-third of the country being pet owners,” explains Seow Kim Chin (KC), the founder of JOJO Pet.

While there are other pet taxi services available in Malaysia, KC finds that these services have not resolved the pain points of the market, especially when it comes to experienced pet transportation services. He explains that most pet taxi services will have their drivers meet the pet first before deciding whether to transport the pet, and this time-consuming process creates a major inconvenience to the pet owners.

With JOJO Pet’s Pet Taxi application, the pet owner will only need to make a few taps on the phone and a driver will pick up the pet within an allocated time. JOJO Pet also ensures that all transport used to transport the pet are well-equipped with the necessary safety equipment such as pet seatbelt, safety net, seat covers with top-notch hygiene for a safe and comfortable journey towards the dedicated destination.

What’s more, pet owners will not need to make additional phone calls to make appointments as its mobile application will have it arranged in tandem.

“Our drivers will undergo stringent inspection and training before they are allowed to transport pets,” says KC. “The first criteria that they need to meet is that they are responsible pet owners themselves. This is to assure our customers that the drivers will know how to handle pets especially when the paw-rents are not physically able to be there with the pets.”

A dashboard camera, as well as a pet camera, will be installed in every vehicle for assurance and safety.

Constant Enhancing of Mobile Application

The JOJO Pet team took ten months to develop the technology behind its pet taxi services. The team collected feedback during different stages of development, making improvements and bug fixing to provide a seamless experience for its customers.

“Our team is constantly researching and developing the application so that every customer’s journey is pleasant for both the pet and the pet owner,” states KC. “While we are excited about the launch, we must make sure we uphold our promise to both the investors and consumers on our app quality and seamless journey,” he adds.

Opening Additional Revenue Channel for Pet Businesses

Seow Kim Chin (Centre), the founder of JOJO Pet and his team

KC also extends an invitation to all pet business owners in Malaysia to join JOJO Pet’s Pet Taxi mobile application as a merchant. This, KC believes, will open up an additional revenue channel for these businesses with its all-around pet-tech ecosystem.

“We have contacted at least 200 pet grooming businesses in Klang Valley alone, and the numbers are still growing. For them to sustain their businesses, they may need to complete at least 2 to 5 appointments per day. This figure does not include other pet services like pet clinics, training centres, hotels and even pet supplies shops,” KC states.

“With our pet taxi mobile application, they can expand their market reach beyond their locality which will also encourage their revenue growth in the long run if they sign up as our merchant,” he further explains. With strong and strategic partnerships, KC believes they can further penetrate the market and reap the benefits together.

More than just a pet taxi service

JOJO Pet has a great vision for its mobile application. The mobile application will not be contented with just providing pet taxi services.

“JOJO Pet Taxi’s mobile application app is currently gaining traction among pet lovers and the number of bookings is increasing day by day. Hence, we would like to extend an invitation to pet business owners to take this opportunity to join our platform and leverage the popularity of our app to increase their business revenue,” says KC excitedly.

“At the same time, we also want to bring pet lovers together and build it as a strong community where they can interact and support each other in their journeys as paw-rents. This will happen in our phase 3 updates where we will introduce dedicated pet social platforms for both pet lovers and their pets.”

KC also has a mission to grow JOJO Pet into a global brand where it provides millions of pet trips daily around the world.

“This is our ultimate goal: to support the pet industry on a global scale where every pet lover on earth can enjoy a seamless journey whenever and wherever they are with comfort and convenience.”

Investors or pet business owners who are interested to be part of JOJO Pet’s journey can indicate their interest by contacting kcseow@jojo-pets.com.

The magic of sharing a Guinness Christmas

Christmas celebrations for the past two years have been rather different for everyone. While the tradition of sharing gifts and love lived on despite being far away from one another, there is nothing quite like the spirit of celebrating the festive season and being merry in the presence of our loved ones.

Guinness, Malaysia’s favourite stout, wants to remind drinkers that time spent together is the best gift we can give our loved ones this Christmas. In an effort to amplify the festive spirit as Guinness lovers reconnect with one another again, the brand provides a platform to enable its drinkers to share a meaningful Christmas with their loved ones - all while enjoying a smooth, cold and creamy Guinness.

This year, fans who want to take their Christmas celebration up a notch with their loved ones stand to win an exclusive Guinness Christmas gift via the brand’s latest social media contest HERE. All they have to do is share a throwback picture or video of them spending Christmas with loved ones and tell Guinness why they need a Guinness Christmas this year. Their submissions will be complete when they tag @GuinnessMY and include the hashtag #GuinnessXmas on either Instagram or Facebook platforms.

“Guinness is all about bringing loved ones together to celebrate the joyous moments. When dine-ins were allowed again, we welcomed our loyal drinkers back to bars by giving away about 3,300 FREE freshly tapped Guinness’ to commemorate their wait to have the first sip of Guinness Draught again. Now, to keep the celebrations going, we’re inviting them to have a Guinness Christmas by celebrating their precious time together with loved ones, just like they did before. With Guinness, their joyous occasion will have a dash of magic to it,” said Shaun Lim, Marketing Manager of Guinness Malaysia.

From now until mid-December, up to five winners will be selected weekly to share a Guinness Christmas with their loved ones. Up for grabs are exclusive Guinness Christmas dinner for five pax at Makhan by Kitchen Mafia, a comedy night at Crackhouse Comedy Club for five pax, an exclusive Guinness cookbook for those who want to bring something different to the table this Christmas, as well as a cosy Christmas movie night for five pax at Aurum Theatre, The Gardens Mall.

“We all have a different take on festive celebrations. Some look forward to tasting a Christmas feast – be it a home-cooked meal or at their favourite restaurants, while others might prefer an intimate movie night with their loved ones as they enjoy each other’s company. Celebrations with loved ones, however, also go hand-in-hand with laughter and that special festive cheer. As such, we are looking forward to gifting our fans a Guinness Christmas that they can cherish for years to come,” Lim continued.

Budget 2022 to integrate PWDs into the workforce

PETALING JAYA: Among the key groups targeted in Budget 2022 are Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with several initiatives designed to uplift the community, and to increase their numbers within the workforce.

Among the measures are an allocation of RM10 million to implement training and mentoring programmes for the disabled at independent training centres and the Government Industrial Training and Rehabilitation Centre

The government is also planning to develop the Community Rehabilitation Programme (or PPDK), an early intervention medium for children with disabilities to improve their skills and secure employment. Currently only implemented in Universiti Sains Malaysia, the programme will be expanded to other public universities beginning next year.

The government is also encouraging more companies to hire PWDs by setting a special quota of 1% from the Short-Term Employment (MyStep) programme for the disabled under the Jamin Kerja Keluarga Malaysia (JaminKerja) initiative.

Employers will also receive wage subsidies to hire PWDs with 30% of the monthly salary for the first six months and 40% for the following six months on condition that the monthly salary is RM1,200 and above.

One example of a company which has fully embraced the PWD community is Starbucks Malaysia, whose Signing Stores were developed to allow deaf baristas or partners to grow and build their career paths. The first started in Bangsar Village II in Kuala Lumpur and a second Malaysian store was opened in Burmah Road, Penang.

Besides providing an opportunity to work with one of the world’s most recognisable brands, the Signing Stores help bridge a gap between the deaf community and the hearing-abled. The company had partnered with The Society of Interpreters of the Deaf to realise the venture.

Starbucks Malaysia managing director Datuk Sydney Quays said: “I believe that it is a good start for our government, and there should be more companies providing opportunities for the PWD community.”

He hoped the government would ensure that companies give due consideration to the skills of PWDs when hiring them.

“For example, people with autism may not be suitable to operate in loud or noisy environments. At Starbucks, we have people with autism who only focus on making beverages because we understand that they need to do things in patterns. For our deaf partners, we created a store designed specifically to meet the needs of the deaf community.”

One of Starbucks’ deaf partners is Tan Xue Mei. The 28-year-old has been working at Starbucks’ Burmah Road outlet for the past two years. She hopes to one day be a certified coffee master, and even a store leader in the future.

“So far, my experience has been very positive,” Mei said. “I truly enjoy working with my hearing and deaf partners. They are very considerate and loving, and the environment encourages very supportive and dynamic teamwork among us.

“Hearing customers and the surrounding community have also been very supportive and willing to learn sign language to communicate with us.”

Both Quays and Mei hoped more would be done to provide PWDsS with training and development to equip them with including special and vocational skills.

Quays said: “Many interpreters do not work full time, which often makes it difficult for us, especially when we need them for our classes, hiring process, training or even when we are doing our events.”

Mei added: “I think there is a need to recognise sign language interpreters as a profession, as many interpreters need to work full time to support their passion in sign language.”

Other companies can look to embed and modify working arrangements to provide the tools to enable PWDs to work, she added.

When tabling Budget 2022, Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz had also announced several other initiatives for the community.

In addition to creating disabled friendly infrastructure in public government buildings, the government will bear the full cost of road taxes for all private vehicles owned by the disabled for the coming year, a move to help relieve financial burdens and also encourage more PWDs to be independent and to travel.

The National Sports Council (NSC) will also receive a total of RM10 million to improve sports training programmes for disabled athletes and to build a sports league for them.

Number of sellers double for Shopee

Shopee continues to witness more Malaysians pivoting, or starting their businesses online as it saw sellers more than double in the past year. This shows the increasing involvement of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the digital economy following consumers’ growing reliance on e-commerce and digital payments.

Many Malaysian sellers have also been able to fast track their e-commerce growth with Shopee. In fact, 80 local sellers, who joined Shopee in 2021, achieved more than RM1 million in sales in just their first year on the platform. Some of these sellers hail from areas outside of state capitals and main cities such as Hutan Melintang, Perak; Kulim, Kedah; and Bera, Pahang, selling mobile and accessories, home and living, and health and beauty products, among others.

For Liow Chee Kah, 33, who runs the Woohuu Store with his wife on Shopee, he hit the RM1 million mark within the first seven months of joining the e-commerce platform. “Even though my products’ price range is fairly low, it is not impossible to achieve this amount of sales. When we started out, we utilised Shopee Ads and joined Shopee’s campaigns as well as Shocking Sale. This proved to be effective in increasing exposure to my store and attracting more followers. Now, as we continue with our low pricing strategy, customers are coming back for repeat purchases.”

Liow works in a factory that produces furniture in Bera, Pahang where the business was impacted during the Movement Control Order. He then decided to start the online business on Shopee with his wife to support their household income.

Terence Pang, Chief Operating Officer at Shopee said, “As we wrap up 2021, we see another year of Malaysians adapting to the pandemic, and it is now more important than ever for businesses to go online to capture more online-first customers. This year, we saw more local traders and sellers either taking their first step online or continuing their journey with us.

Our sellers’ achievements is also a testament to e-commerce’s ability to create inclusive and sustainable livelihoods amidst a challenging business landscape. We are glad and humbled to be part of their success stories, and we continue to strive to help more local MSMEs to benefit from technology and have access to the digital economy.”

To help more sellers make their mark online, Shopee celebrates local by introducing more campaigns regionally and locally to give them a spotlight. Under the #ShopeeSapotLokal initiative in Malaysia, Shopee is hosting the ‘Seller of the Month’ contest where sellers are to share their journey as a Shopee seller on social media. The winning seller, chosen by an internal jury and votes from Shopee users, will receive a Shopee Live stream feature, store vouchers, Shopee ads credits and exclusive merchandise.

Additionally, Shopee’s double-digit campaigns such as the ongoing 12.12 Birthday Sale serve to celebrate the achievements of sellers whilst gathering the support of Malaysians towards their stores through attractive offerings.

The most joyful year-end celebration, happening till 12 December, is treating Malaysians to Free Shipping Vouchers with no minimum spend as well as 12 million vouchers. One lucky shopper will walk away with a new car by playing Spin & Win Hyundai Kona, fully sponsored by AIG Malaysia Insurance Bhd. On top of this, Malaysians topping up their ShopeePay mobile wallets from now till 11 December can look forward to winning up to 12,121 Shopee Coins every day.

The e-commerce platform via #ShopeeGivesBack is teaming up with 12 non-government organisations (NGO) and social enterprises including Budimas Charitable Foundation, Hopes Malaysia Welfare Association, Islamic Aid Malaysia and the MyKasih Foundation on a donation drive. It is also joining forces with Mydin, Nestlé, RB Home, Thong Guan Trading and Unilever to offer users the option to donate essential bundle packs between RM30 and RM100. Proceeds from the donations, as well as bundle packs will go to providing necessities such as clean water, food and other basic amenities to rural and underprivileged communities in Malaysia.

“Every 12.12, Shopee comes together with our users - shoppers, sellers and local communities, to celebrate the milestones and achievements over the past year. This year, we would like to show our appreciation to everyone for letting us be part of their daily lives through the various elements, entities and efforts on Shopee. We look forward to celebrating the year-end with all Malaysians as we bring cheer to one another this holiday season,” Pang added.

In celebration of Shopee’s sixth birthday, Shopee will be hosting its 12.12 Birthday Bash TV Show on Shopee Live and TV3 from 9PM on 11 December. The show will feature local celebrities such as Misha Omar, K-Clique, Siti Nordiana and more. Viewers will also be enticed with XBox Series X, Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryers and 12 million Shopee Coins that are up for grabs during the Shopee Shake Battle Mode. The TV show will also feature Timbang & Menang, where viewers can guess the weight of randomly selected objects by the host and win up to RM15,000.

Say no to drink-driving

Drinking tonight? Let’s plan ahead for a safe night out by leaving your car at home whilst enjoying free or discounted rides with five e-hailing and chauffeur-on-call partners. This year’s #CelebrateResponsibly campaign is launched in tandem with the reopening of economic and social activities as Carlsberg Malaysia extends its support in driving footfall to food and beverages (F&B) outlets amid recovery from COVID-19 impacts.

Back for the 7th consecutive year, the brewer reaffirms its stance on responsible consumption by advocating the importance of no driving under the influence of alcohol that is in compliance with the Road Transport (Amendment) Act 2020, of which the blood alcohol content (BAC) limit has been reduced to 0.05% from 0.08% and heavier penalties on driving under the influence were enforced in October last year.

The #CelebrateResponsibly campaign, which runs from 13 November 2021 to 2 January 2022, is made even more timely as it coincides with year-end festivities such as Christmas and the New Year’s celebrations, both a festive period that most commonly celebrated with alcohol for many. Coupled with the increasing number of road users as interstate travelling are now permitted given that more states have moved into Phase Four of the National Recovery Plan, it is more so important for alcohol consumers to not drink driving and opt for alternatives like e-hailing, chauffer-on-call and designated drivers.

Once again, building on the strategic partnership from the past years, Carlsberg Malaysia continues collaborating with e-hailing providers such as Grab, Riding Pink and airasia ride – the new kid in the block; as well as chauffeur-on-call service providers Lailah and Buddy Driver for the 1.5-month campaign this year extending to consumers nationwide.

By simply using the promotional code CELEBRATERESPONSIBLY, consumers can enjoy up to RM10 off each ride to and from over 3,000 Carlsberg Malaysia’s affiliated bars, bistros and restaurants, which can be redeemed between 5pm and 12 midnight daily until 2 January 2021 or while rides last.

Alternatively, if you had an impromptu drinking session, you could opt to get a driver to drive you home in the comfort of your own car. With the same promotional code CELEBRATERESPONSIBLY, consumers can get an hour FREE with Buddy Driver on the TREVO app or 10% off Lailah’s chauffeur-on-call services.

“In trying times like this, we set out to do more than just curbing irresponsible drinking but also support the local F&B outlets to recover with dine-in businesses after weeks of disruptions.#CelebrateResponsibly further reiterates our stance that we have ZERO tolerance towards irresponsible drinking and that drinking-related accidents are one too many and can be avoidable, should one make the responsible decision before planning for a drink,” said Carlsberg Malaysia’s Corporate Affairs Director Pearl Lai.

“As a responsible brewer, we also believe that it is crucial for us to send across a clear signal that we are single-minded and devoted to educating and ensuring that the consumption of beer should be done in a responsible and moderate manner for the safety of everyone”, she added.

“We want to change consumers’ mindset, behaviour and habits right from the very start by making responsible decisions even before taking their first sip. You can make a difference by being a responsible drinker!” she stressed.

This campaign is in line with the bold vision set by the Carlsberg Group for a society without irresponsible drinking. By 2030, the Group aims to see a continuous reduction of key responsible drinking statistics in all of its markets in support of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) objective of reducing harmful use of alcohol, as well as the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 3 to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

“Our responsible drinking initiatives do not just stop here; all our packaging and online platforms contain responsible drinking messages - #CelebrateResponsibly in Malaysia and Singapore. This, in turn, is part of our Group’s global goal of achieving ZERO Irresponsible Drinking through enabling, informing and encouraging responsible choices,” Lai concluded.

#CelebrateResponsibly is Carlsberg Malaysia’s annual responsible drinking campaign is part of the Carlsberg Group’s global commitment towards ZERO Irresponsible Drinking under its Together Towards ZERO sustainability ambitions.
