Midea boosts global Man City partnership

Midea and Manchester City today announced an amplification to their global partnership which kicked off in January 2020.

Throughout this partnership, Midea has produced engaging digital content, which has been extremely popular with City fans around the world.

Most notably, the #MideaHomeChallenge kept fans entertained during lockdowns when several Manchester City players challenged fans to show their football skills interacting with their home appliances in unique ways.

Also, the Midea #WorldClass Awards campaign celebrated the Club’s, and especially players’ #WorldClass performances during the 2020/21 season. Midea’s innovative awards show, moderated by City legends Paul Dickov and Shaun Wright-Phillips, attracted millions of views and engagements from fans when nine different #WorldClass trophies were voted on and subsequently awarded to, their favourite City players.

This season, hand in hand with the Etihad Stadium’s new top-notch and world-leading two-tier LED display system, Midea now has 12 LED slots at every Manchester City home match to showcase their extensive range of smart home appliances across all categories.

“Midea’s global visibility is still fairly small compared to our ambitions. Partnering with Manchester City - awarded the most innovative sports team in the world and with their philosophy to combine playing the most attractive football to watch, with a very successful outcome – gives us great global visibility and a business partner with the same high ambitions towards the future.” said Eric Wang, VP Midea Group and President & CEO of Midea Group’s International Business Division.

“There are 55,000 fans in the stadium, but millions of Manchester City fans among the 3.5 billion football fans all around the world watching on TV and Social Media at home – and home is where we are. Hence, in Midea, we are delighted to showcase our commitment and ambitions to millions and billions of fans who are enjoying football from their homes.” Wang continued.

“Manchester City’s partnership with Midea has gone from strength to strength and we are delighted to further deepen our relationship. Midea has shown great understanding in how to engage with City fans around the world by producing some of our strongest performing social media content in recent seasons and we’re now looking forward to expanding this partnership into community outreach and further smart product integration,” said Roel de Vries, City Football Group’s Group Chief Operating Officer.

“We are extremely proud & happy to be again associated with Man City FC in the 2021/2022 season. With football being the No.1 sport in Malaysia and Man City’s huge fanbase here, we are very excited to have the chance to again showcase Midea’s wide range of smart home appliances to all the Man City fans to deliver the experience of “make yourself at home” with our innovative products. We believe our forthcoming active engagements with the Man City fans in the 2021/22 season will bring about a stronger brand presence for Midea in Malaysia as we witness another winning championship season for Man City.” said Mark Tam, General Manager Midea Scott & English Electronics Sdn Bhd

Midea will also extend its relationship to help support the community by partnering with the Club’s renowned ‘City In The Community’ programme, to explore ways to tackle social challenges.

Over the coming months, the Club will also be integrating industry-leading Midea smart home appliances across the Etihad Campus to provide enhanced facilities for players and fans alike.

In addition to the commitment with the Manchester City Men’s team, Midea is also the exclusive global Home Appliances, White Goods and HVAC partner of the Manchester City Women’s team and a main partner of Manchester City’s City Football Group sister club, New York City FC which plays in the MLS.

Fast & Furious running low on fuel

IN the action-packed fantasy world of Dominic Toretto where reality-defying car stunts and fight scenes take centre stage, the execution of these high-octane set pieces is what drives fans back for more.

It also means that each addition to the franchise will inevitably try to one-up the previous movies.

This definitely seems to be the case with the latest Fast & Furious offering, F9: The Fast Saga.

Directed by Justin Lin, the movie speeds from one ludicrous action sequence to the next in a “getting the job done” approach, rather than making a fun action movie like Furious 7.

After being around for two decades, F9 first takes the audience on a peaceful car ride to Dominic Toretto’s (Diesel) quiet life off the grid with Letty (Rodriguez) and his son, Little Brian.

While Dom finally has some peace and comfort, danger creeps up on him and lures him to confront the sins of his past if he wants to save those he loves the most.

As Dom join forces with his crew to halt a world-shattering plot, he reunites with his estranged brother, Jakob (Cena), who happens to be (drum roll, please) the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver the team has met to date!

This is a super hard sell considering Cena’s Jakob is nowhere near as charismatic and badass as Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw.

Undeniably, Lin has made the franchise famous globally since joining the team in 2006, and directing three previous films.

However, this project reflected his lack of creativity considering how several elements in this film seemed forced and empty.

To illustrate, its narrative showcased a rather cringy, slow-paced backstory and a plot that made me wince throughout the movie, especially during bits where the characters were spewing the word “FAMILY” over and over again.

To top it off, the dialogue was not intriguing enough to keep my attention to the very end.

While the star-studded line-up looked exciting, some of the performances were disappointing.

Diesel’s forced machismo and threatening expression looked comical, whereas Theron’s performance this time seemed unnatural as she was trying too hard to be villainous.

Under Lin’s direction, Cena’s character can be summed up as constipated, which is a shame because we’ve seen in The Suicide Squad what he can do with better material and direction.

As the movie progresses, several ridiculous storylines start to surface. From Tej (Ludacris) and Roman (Tyrese Gibson) sitting in a car that is launched into space, to the convoluted explanation of Han’s (Sung Kang) return from the grave.

Despite these flaws, Han’s return will surely warm your heart, especially if you have been following the series from the start. There are also a few surprise appearances in this film that will make you smile.

This sequel could have certainly used James Wan’s touch to leave more impact on the audience.

F9 is out in theatres now.

Retirement is no joke!

By this point in our series on Your Personal Journey to Financial Security we have already covered topics that can offer you tools to help you build your wealth. We’ve given you ideas on how to invest your money wisely, how to find the right experts to advise you, and even asked you to consider investing in Unit Trusts and Private Retirement Schemes.

This time, however, we would like to remind you about the ultimate reason for doing so: so that you are able to retire comfortably, and with peace of mind.

When you are young, saving for your retirement might seem like something that can wait for later, especially if you have other commitments that may seem more urgent. However, we want to emphasise the hard truth: Retirement Is No Joke!

Let us imagine two young people: John and Jane. Both of them begin working at around the same time, and earn similar salaries. Both of them purchase the same type of car, get married and start families, even purchase a home at the same time. Both of them also make sure that they live within their means, without any unnecessary splurges.

The only difference between them are the plans they have made for their retirement. John is planning on living off his retirement savings in his Employees Provident Fund (EPF), while Jane has been setting aside a certain amount of money every month for investments and additional retirement savings, which she is planning on drawing from to supplement her EPF savings in her old age.

Now, which of them do you think would be in a better position financially should they suddenly fall ill during their golden years?

If you have prepared yourself financially – you can have peace of mind and enjoy your retirement without having to worry too much about money. If you have not – you may have just enough money to get by, and if a major crisis happens, you may find yourself stretched too thin at that point in life when you need your savings the most.

Why is it important?

We Malaysians are expected to live until we reach 75 years old. However, we retire at 60 years old. That means, we can expect to live at least 15 more years without drawing a regular monthly income.

Some of us may be fortunate enough to receive monthly pensions, or be able to tap into our EPF savings. Nonetheless, research have shown that merely having pensions or EPF savings may not be enough to live through retirement.

Some of us may have children who are working and receiving salaries. Yes, they can provide for us, but do we really want to burden them, especially if they have children of their own whom they need to care for? It would be better if we are financially independent and not be a burden to others.

As such, to be able to fully enjoy our golden years, we need to start saving and growing our money in time for our retirement.

Growing your retirement savings

We don’t just want to save our money. We actually want it to grow. The way to do that is by investing our savings and an option would be to invest in Unit Trust Schemes (UTS) or Private Retirement Schemes (PRS).

Investing in UTS and PRS is one of the simplest forms of investing. It doesn’t require large amounts of money, time, or expertise.

All you need to do is approach a UTS/PRS Consultant and transfer a portion of your savings into a UTS/PRS product that is suitable for you. The monies in the UTS/PRS, including yours, will be invested by a licensed professional fund manager.

Saving for retirement

A Long-Term Activity

Remember that life is a marathon, not a sprint. If your retirement is still some time away, it will give you a lot more time to prepare for it. This means that you can save a lot simply by putting aside some money consistently over a long period of time.

To maximise your savings, the key is to start early. Just like in a marathon, every now and then, you should take stock of your progress and ‘refresh’ yourself. As your salary increases, revisit your periodic contributions and adjust accordingly. As pay increases, your lifestyle gets upgraded.

After retirement, you do not have any more fixed salary, but the expenses of your upgraded lifestyle remain. As such, your target savings should be one which can sustain your desired future lifestyle.

But how much should you save?

You can refer to a retirement calculator. The Private Pension Administrator (PPA) has one, which you can utilise here. After you key in the requested details, the retirement calculator will inform you of the amount of savings you will need, as well as the projected savings you will have based on your current savings amount.

From there, you can calculate the shortfall and determine how much you should be saving on a monthly basis.

Consistency is Key

Remember to pay yourself first! Most of the time, once people receive their salary, they would save whatever remains after paying their bills, taxes, loans, groceries and such. However, this practice can lead to inconsistent savings. It would best if you can allocate a fixed amount for your retirement savings first, before seeing to your other commitments.

Likewise, do NOT take ‘savings holidays’ or defer your savings contributions. You must be consistent!

It would be ideal if you can consider signing up for a regular savings plan when investing in a UTS/PRS. This plan will, on a regular basis, automatically deduct money from your bank account and purchase units in UTS/PRS. Hence, you can ensure that you will be consistent in your savings.

Name a Nominee

Essentially, a nominee is the person who will inherit your savings in the event something happens to you. Hence, it is very important that when you make your investments, you elect a nominee.

Even if you don’t name a nominee, your next-of-kin can still receive your monies. However, the process is a lot more difficult and expensive because he/she may need to procure and submit multiple documents (including court documents) to prove his/her entitlement. By naming a nominee, the process is a lot easier and more cost effective.

If you have not yet named a nominee, you can contact your authorised UTS/PRS Consultant and he/she will help you with the process.

How to make a nomination

When you invest in PRS, you are automatically enrolled as a lifetime member of PPA. As a member, you can make a nomination for the purpose of easy disbursement of your PRS balance in the event of your demise. You can nominate up to six (6) persons and allocate a specified percentage of the PRS balance to be paid to the nominee(s).

The final word

Retirement is no joke! We want to be able to enjoy our retirement comfortably and without any financial worries. As such, we must start saving for retirement early and doing so in a safe and disciplined way.

Getting an early start on saving for your future gives you a huge advantage. The younger you start saving and investing, the less you have to work today to have a financially secure future, because you can let the compounded interest to do the heavy lifting.

To find out what other steps you can take to reach financial freedom, look out for the next article in our series on Your Personal Journey to Financial Security, only in theSun, brought to you by the Federation of Investment Managers Malaysia (FIMM).

Hong Kong’s hidden gems

AS global vaccination rates begin rising and life slowly gets back to normal, many Malaysians are looking forward to being able travel once again. While international borders have yet to reopen, that has not stopped people from drawing up a list of cities and countries they would like to visit, and Hong Kong definitely ranks high on most of them.

In anticipation of its borders reopening to international travellers, Malaysians might want to take note of Hong Kong’s latest tourism campaign, which introduces visitors to some of its newer, less crowded destinations, encouraging people explore and seek out hidden gems that offer a taste of the city’s rich cultural heritage.

One such district that is the focus of the latest campaign by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is West Kowloon, which has undergone a renaissance of sorts in recent years. Once known as the quieter, homelier twin to Hong Kong Island, today West Kowloon stands as a real testament to ingenuity and transformation.

The coastline of western Kowloon is situated at the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD), a large-scale land reclamation project, converting the space into a vibrant art and cultural hub. The West Kowloon neighbourhood campaign, covering Yau Ma Tei, Jordan and WKCD, connects the traditional craftsmanship, historic buildings, authentic dining, and shopping experiences in the city to the new bustling energy of this international art and culture district.

As a natural bay and coastal area, Yau Mai Tei used to be a shoreline where seafaring Tanka people docked their fishing boats. Since 1876, the coastline was pushed from Shanghai Street to Reclamation Street, and later to Ferry Street in Jordan due to city development.

This emerging neighbourhood is filled with plentiful treasures that boast no shortage of gems for visitors to rediscover Hong Kong in a new perspective. Five thematic walking routes are offered, focusing on Heritage & Craftmanship, Cultural Arts and Culinary Arts, taking visitors into little-known corners of the city that are often overlooked by residents and visitors alike.

Sindart Embroidered Slippers

Owner Miru Wong is the third generation to run Sindart Embroidered Slippers, a small store selling traditional embroidered Chinese footwear in Kowloon’s Woo Sung Street since 1958.

These silk-brocade slippers were popular amongst ladies of the upper and middle class, who wore them inside their homes. Completely handmade, the traditional designs of Sindart’s slippers are infused with modern elements, incorporating animal motifs such as pandas and owls alongside non-traditional flora like camellia and cherry blossoms.

Wong began practicing embroidery under the tutelage of her grandmother whilst still in primary school, and once she entered high school, learnt the shoemaking craft from her grandfather. Today, she keeps their legacy alive by continuing to produce the traditional slippers that earned Sindart its reputation, incorporating new elements into the product while staying true to its traditional roots.

Like Kowloon itself, Wong has adapted her craft to suit modern times and tastes. Apart from slippers, Sindart also offers flats and heels to be worn outside of the house, as well as accessories and handbags.

Biu Kee Mahjong

The game of mahjong is deeply rooted in Chinese tradition, traditionally played at family gatherings and during important festivals like Lunar New Year. And in a quiet shop on Temple Street, Jordan sits master craftsman Cheung Shun King, better known as Uncle King, one of the last artisans in Hong Kong who still makes mahjong tiles by hand.

Perched on his work stool facing Jordan Road, Uncle King deftly etches symbols and numbers onto the smooth plastic faces of the bare tiles, before bringing them to life in glorious technicolour. He inherited the shop from his father and has been honing his craft for over 50 years.

Apart from traditional mahjong sets, Uncle King also makes custom tiles that can bear anything from names to cartoon characters. He also hosts mahjong-carving workshops for people who would like to try their hand at making their own tiles, and has worked with local authorities to create exclusive pieces for art exhibitions.

Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market

The locals call it Gwo Laan (fruit wholesaler), but this vibrant market on Reclamation Street in Yau Ma Tei is more than that: it is a one of Hong Kong’s most iconic cultural heritage buildings, continuing to supply fresh produce to the neighbourhood since it was first built in 1913. Although it once also sold fish and vegetables, following the opening of other markets in the 1960s, Gwo Laan has narrowed its focus to just fruits.

Consisting of rows of one- and two-storey brick and stone buildings built in an Art Deco style, Gwo Laan also boasts architectural features typical of the 1950s and 1960s, now rarely seen elsewhere. A trip to the market is like a trip back in time. Spend a few minutes walking the area and admiring all the historical architecture, including the Yau Ma Tei Theatre right across the street.

The market is at its busiest during the early hours of the morning when fruits are delivered, and it is definitely the best place to find inspiration for your next culinary creation.

Stay tuned for part two of theSun’s feature on West Kowloon, where we explore the culinary heritage of the city! For more information, visit discoverhongkong.com.

Lucky numbers from an unlikely source

A total of RM23,531,049 was won by a single winner and RM4,652,529 won by other partial winners of Magnum’s 4D Jackpot earlier this week. A lucky man from Petaling Jaya, Selangor experienced a life changing moment recently, witnessing the Jackpot numbers he purchased drawn up via the Magnum Mobile App Live Draw on 17th October 2021, Sunday.

The lucky man played 4D Jackpot by purchasing 5 bet lines for RM10. The winning numbers 6810 (First Prize) +1911 (Second Prize) which won him RM 23,531,049 were inspired by random car plate numbers parked in his neighbourhood. Yes, you read that right!

An avid Magnum customer for the past 30 years, he usually purchases RM20 Jackpot numbers per draw. It was an exciting time when he came to Magnum Headquarters to receive his winning cheque.

“It is unbelievable, he exclaimed. I felt my hands were shaking while holding my mobile phone watching the Live Draw. I literally shouted when my numbers were moved to the top three prizes. I could barely sleep the whole night realizing that I’m a multi-millionaire now!”

When asked how he will be spending his prize money, the winner said that he will share the windfall with his family members, allocate some amount to repair his ancestors house in China as well as to donate some to charity organisations as he strongly believes in giving back to society.

Our Magnum Representative said, “We could not be happier for our customers. There’s a lucky streak recently, as our Magnum Life Grand Prize was won on 25/9/2021 (winning RM1,000 every day for 20 years!), just a week after we resumed business and now the Magnum 4D Jackpot is fully won. We in Magnum would like to send our congratulations to the winners and hope it makes a positive difference to their lives!”

Kellogg and The Lost Food Project to feed frontliners

KELLOGG COMPANY (Kellogg), the world’s leading cereal and snacks company, recently announced its partnership with The Lost Food Project, to distribute breakfast and snack items to essential frontliners throughout the month of October 2021.

Facilitated by The Lost Food Project, Kellogg will contribute breakfast packs consisting of its healthy cereal, milk, fruits and Pringles to about 5,000 essential frontliners which include healthcare personnel, police officers and vaccination centre volunteers around Kuala Lumpur and Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.

This contribution, which coincided with World Food Day on Oct 16, is part of Kellogg’s Better Days initiative, its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) flagship initiative which aims to create Better Days for three billion people by the end of 2030.

Anoop Abraham, managing director of Kellogg Southeast Asia said: “Kellogg is committed to providing nutritious food and helping solve the issue of food insecurity via its feeding programmes. In conjunction with World Food Day, we continue to push forward this commitment by recognising our essential frontlines for their tireless effort and contribution throughout the pandemic.

“We hope that the breakfast packs will help our frontlines start off their day positively, and create a ripple effect of Better Days for their families and the broader community.”

Touch ‘n Go eWallet Launches DuitNow Transfer function

PETALING JAYA: Touch ‘n Go eWallet today announced that it has launched the DuitNow Transfer function, allowing its users to move their monies from any internet banking account directly to the eWallet in real time.

In addition to providing users with greater function and flexibility, this supports Touch ‘n Go eWallet’s expansion into the digital financial services space.

With the DuitNow Transfer function, Touch ‘n Go eWallet is now interoperable and part of a larger payments ecosystem alongside banks. Touch ‘n Go eWallet is already accepted in over ONE million DuitNow QR merchant acceptance points, and the implementation of DuitNow Transfer is expected to fuel its usage further.

“This marks our deepened penetration into the financial services ecosystem. DuitNow Transfer allows us to inter-work better with our users ‘source of funds’, as we aim to deliver superior value-added services to them across a range of use-cases,” said Effendy Shahul Hamid, Group CEO, Touch ‘n Go Group.

“This also opens several new opportunities for our users. For example, working adults can easily move monies directly from their internet banking accounts to the Touch ‘n Go eWallets of their children, elderly parents and/or domestic helpers. As things evolve, employers could also use this as an alternative to allowance disbursements for their workers. We will continue to innovate around this space for our users.”

Using the DuitNow Transfer feature is easy as users can receive funds from registered banks by simply entering the recipient’s mobile number or their Touch ‘n Go eWallet account number.

DuitNow Transfer is an instant fund transfer function that is initiated from an online banking account as well as participating eWallets. It is operated by Payments Network Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PayNet), the national payments network and shared central infrastructure for Malaysia’s financial markets.

DuitNow Transfer is the second service from PayNet that has been accepted by Touch ‘n Go eWallet, the first being the DuitNow QR, the national QR code standard which allows for any compliant QR Code to take payments from any participating banks and eWallets.

Payors transferring money to any verified Touch ‘n Go eWallet account will have greater peace of mind as the eWallet has enabled facial verification, a tightened security feature for eWallet access and transactions.

Additionally, users of Touch ‘n Go eWallet also enjoy the Moneyback Guarantee feature which promises full compensation within five (5) working days, for any unlikely event of unauthorised purchases or transfers.

The one and only Kentaro Miura

Kentaro Miura, the creator of the long-running and best selling dark fantasy manga Berserk, began drawing at the age of 10.

Born on July 11, 1966 to artist parents, Miura created his first manga entitled Miuranger in 1976 which was published for his classmates in a school publication. Miuranger spanned 40 volumes and he created a second manga in 1977 titled Ken e no Michi (The Way to the Sword).

Miura graduated from the art college of Nihon University in Tokyo in 1989. His most popular work, Berserk, was first serialised in Hakusensha’s Monthly Animal House in the same year.

It went on to sell more than 50 million copies worldwide during the span of his career. The popularity of Berserk inspired two TV series, a film trilogy and two video games. In 2002, he won the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize.

Its popularity also spilled over to the US market with publisher Dark Horse helming the English-language version of the manga. In 2018, Dark Horse reported that Berserk remains the top-selling series in its history, with nearly two million copies sold.

Unfortunately, Miura’s demise due to an acute aortic dissection on May 6, 2021 leaves the story of Berserk, which has spanned 40 volumes, incomplete.

As an artist, Miura was known for the intricate linework in his drawings and his stories that infuses sword fights and supernatural encounters with complex moral dilemmas and themes.

His style was distinguished by the obsessive use of minute crosshatching and extra textural details. His attention to detail and love for sweeping fantastical landscapes has been compared to the works of the Dutch Renaissance master Hieronymus Bosch.

“Miura ... fill[ed] those pages with an epic of boldness, elegance, horror, adventure, love, redemption, perseverance, friendship, humour – an epic of contradictions: beautiful, grotesque, whimsical, cosmic,” Dark Horse manga editor Carl Horn wrote in a tribute released by the publisher.

The legendary influence of Berserk can be observed in the world of games, manga, films, anime and even literature. Guts, the main character in Berserk, carries a massive sword and this character design has been attributed to inspire characters like Cloud Strife of Final Fantasy VII and Dante of the Devil May Cry series. Despite the stoic exterior, Miura also managed to flesh out the main character.

“Guts is a survivor of horrific sexual assault, [which] defines his early characterisation more than anything else,” said Kotaku’s Patrick Marlborough.

Other contemporary mangaka who cite Miura as an influence include Attack on Titan’s Hajime Isayama, Black Butler’s Yana Toboso, and Black Clover’s Yuki Tabata.

The influence of his work can also be seen in popular video games such as Dark Souls, Final Fantasy and Devil May Cry. Even the assistant director of Netflix’s Castlevania, Adam Deats, drew inspiration from Miura.

Many have praised Miura for his bold storytelling too. “He was willing to kill off a lot of named characters in one fell swoop to bring Guts to his lowest point,” said Deats. “Playing things a little bit darker and letting ourselves linger on things was something I always took from his work.”

For many fans of Miura, his passing is soul crushing. In light of this, Dark Horse’s Horn included an uplifting word to Miura’s legion of fans in the written tribute.

“By the millions he touched lives, inspired lives – put life into people, sometimes when we truly needed it. You who are his fans knew that already; some of Miura-sensei’s life is in you now. You are already carrying the story forward,” Horn wrote.

Berserk’s Volume 41, will be the first tankubon (collected volume) to be released since Miura’s passing, with a regular and Special Edition.

Slated for a Dec 24 release date, the Special Edition will include a drama CD featuring an adaptation of the Awakening arc from Berserk, which has never been adapted in the series’ multiple anime adaptations.

Taking beautiful shots with the vivo X70 series

Now that we’re allowed to travel safely, it’s important to capture the beautiful memories during your long-needed holiday and you can do all that with just one smartphone.

vivo recently launched its X70 and X70 Pro professional photography flagship smartphones in Malaysia, boasting a stellar camera performance thanks to its partnership with ZEISS.

The X70 series camera lenses are coated with ZEISS T* coating which reduces stray lights and ghosting effects, bringing out the true colours of photos and videos taken in both day and night. The Ultra-sensing Gimbal Camera ensures your shots are crystal-clear even in low-light or unstable settings. Together with X70 series Real-Time Extreme Night Vision, dark and blurry photos are a thing of the past.

Shutterbugs will love all four of ZEISS’ legendary style portrait lenses. The Distagon style gives a dreamy bokeh effect, Planar style gives a classic bokeh style, Sonnar style results in a creamy bokeh look, and Biotar style gives a swirly bokeh effect.

Whichever mode you choose, your stunning pictures will inspire wanderlust even long after your return home.

When it comes down to the specifics, the X70 series all have 32MP front-facing cameras. The X70 are equipped with three rear cameras (40MP, 12MP, 12MP) while the X70 Pro has four rear cameras (50MP, 12MP, 12MP, 8MP).

Both smartphones run on the MediaTek Dimensity 1200V chip and powered by a 4,400 mAh battery on the X70 or 4,450 mAh battery on the X70 Pro. On a full charge, the batteries can last more than two days. The long-lasting battery on the phone is especially great for travelling because you’ll be out and about exploring your environment.

If the batteries run low, there’s no need to worry because it takes only 68 minutes to reach a full charge thanks to the 44W fast charging feature. The X70 series smartphones are also 5G supported, have a 120Hz refresh rate and an extended RAM 2.0.

The sleek smartphones sport a smooth touch thanks to their Fluorite AG coating and come in two elegant colours: Aurora Dawn and Cosmic Black. The smartphones are also lightweight thanks to their slim design – as thin as 7.55m – and weigh only 181g.

In short, the vivo X70 series of smartphones will help users take enviable images wherever they are with just a few clicks.

To help demonstrate the functionalities of the vivo X70, vivo has enlisted the help of several local celebrities and newsmakers in a video campaign to showcase the functionalities of the device.

News presenter and executive producer Lim She Ting, TV presenter Nik Munirah Nik Hassan, celebrity host Wayne Wayne, news presenter Tan Chia Yong, local comedian Dr Jason Leong, celebrity entrepreneur Jeff Chin, shoe designer Christy Ng, film producer and business executive Joanne Goh, and STTOKE Inc co-founder Law YiShen and head of marketing Samuel Soong all spoke about how the device helps them redefine themselves and “tell their stories”.

For instance, as a news presenter, Lim She Ting needs to constantly stay connected with the latest news updates. With the vivo X70’s 44W fast charging feature, it allows her to minimise her downtime, so she can always be on the go.

For STTOKE co-founder Law YiShen, the vivo X70 series’ various professional ZEISS lenses allow him to stylishly shoot the mugs his company designs, and to use the images for business purposes.

Similarly, Samuel Soon needs to handle many different responsibilities as STTOKE’s head of marketing. The vivo X70 series’ powerful MediaTek Dimensity 1200V chipset ensures that he manages to complete his tasks as smoothly as possible.

Building wealth with a Private Retirement Scheme

The previous articles in our series on Your Personal Journey to Financial Security have talked about why you should consider investing your money in order to ensure a more secure future for yourself and your loved ones, and how to find the right experts to help guide you along your journey.

For most people, the ultimate goal is to be able to retire comfortably, by ensuring that they have adequate savings or investments to sustain them in their old age. However, there can be no denying that the hardships brought about by the pandemic in the past two years have made achieving this goal a lot more challenging.

Various economists have warned that a retirement crisis is on the horizon. The most recent figures released by the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) show that almost half of its members (46%) have less than RM10,000 in their account, and that the percentage of its members who are on track to reach the basic savings threshold (RM240,000 by age 55) has dropped from 36% to 27%, exacerbated by the number of people withdrawing from their EPF accounts to offset their daily expenses during the pandemic.

However, it doesn’t have to be that way. The best time to act is now, and the earlier you can begin saving for your retirement, or even growing your wealth again after it has taken a hit, the better.

This time, we would like to touch upon a wealth-building option known as a Private Retirement Scheme (PRS). PRS are offered and managed by PRS Providers and are governed by the Securities Commission Malaysia.

As the name indicates, a PRS is voluntary long-term savings and investment scheme designed to help you save more for your retirement. First introduced in 2012, it is meant to help encourage people to contribute to their retirement savings.

Investments in PRS are structured in the following manner: contributions are divided into two sub-accounts, and you can only make withdrawals once you reach retirement age, or in case of death or emigration. You are permitted to make partial withdrawals before then, but you will incur a penalty fee.

Contributions to PRS are entirely voluntary, and offer more diversification in terms of investment options. PRS seek to enhance choices available for all Malaysians, whether employed or self-employed, to supplement their retirement savings under a well-structured and regulated environment. Each PRS offers a wide range of retirement funds from which you may choose to invest in based on your retirement needs, goals and risk appetite.

Why invest in a PRS?

Contributing in PRS may be one of the best things you can do for your retirement. Here’s why:

Designed for retirement

As a scheme originally established to help investors accumulate more savings for their retirement, you can be assured that there is a selection of investment options to suit your specific goals and needs.

Easy investments

Anyone can invest in a PRS, regardless of experience. There is a wide choice of PRS Providers and self-selected funds, as well as default option funds that have been pre-selected based on investors’ age.

Affordable savings

The minimum contribution varies depending on your chosen PRS Provider. While the flexible nature of the investment scheme means that there is less pressure on you to commit to a certain amount, just remember that the more you ‘save’, the better your results. If you manage to contribute 10% of your salary into a PRS, you can grow your retirement savings at a faster rate.

Tax incentive

Besides being able to enjoy the additional retirement savings later in life, you can also enjoy a yearly personal tax relief of up to RM3,000 from your taxable income, for as long as you contribute to a PRS (the tax relief is available up to 2025). The earnings generated from a PRS will also be tax exempted, so that is even more reason to contribute!

Factors to consider

It takes time and effort to accumulate wealth and to maximise the benefits from compounded returns. This is more so given that most of us are saving for the long term, such as for our retirement years.

When making your PRS contribution, you need to consider various factors such as your age, personal and household income, risk tolerance, retirement objectives as well as the suitability of the different funds under the various schemes to meet your retirement needs.

The following chart offers suggestions on what you should take into consideration prior to investing in PRS. While the rule of thumb is that your investment strategy should be based upon the time you have until retirement (i.e. long-term investment strategies should focus more on capital growth, while short-term investment strategies should focus on income generation), remember that everyone’s situation is different, and that you should always consult an expert should you have any questions.

Among the key items to note:

Objectives: Based on your intended goals, you can choose to invest with the intention of growing your capital, income generation, or a combination of both strategies. The goals for each person are different, and dependent upon a variety of factors, so it is important to decide which option you wish to take.

Your life stage: Those who are nearing retirement age should focus on investments that can provide them with a sustainable income, while those who are younger should be looking towards investments that have a higher potential for growth in order to reap bigger rewards once they are ready to retire.

Your risk appetite: Investors who are able to handle greater risks tend to be those with long-term goals, who have more time to weather any market volatility. Those who value stability tend to be those already nearing retirement age, and therefore would benefit more from investments that would allow them to preserve their initial capital.

It is important to bear in mind the cost of living and inflation in setting your retirement goals, as well as to think long-term. As our needs change through different stages of our lives, you should review your PRS portfolio regularly so that it matches your risk appetite and investment objectives.

Investment risks

When you invest in a PRS, there are investment risks involved. These are general risks which you will be exposed to when investing in any of the PRS funds as well as specific risks associated with the investment portfolio of each fund. Therefore, you should consider the different type of risks that may affect you and the fund. These risks are disclosed in the PRS’ Disclosure Document or Product Highlights Sheet (PHS).

For a list of the PRS fund’s general and specific risks with your respective PRS Provider, please refer to Funds & Providers section here. Alternatively, you may contact any of the PRS Providers and ask for a copy of their PRS Disclosure Document or PHS.

How do I invest in PRS?

Your journey to save more for your retirement with PRS begins by following these 4 simple steps:

1. Select your PRS provider. There are a number of accredited PRS providers in Malaysia, who are guided by the stringent rules set out by the Securities Commission Malaysia. For a list of PRS providers, visit here.

2. Choose a suitable fund. Once you have selected your PRS Provider, you should take the time to explore the funds they offer to find one that suits your current or long-term investment goals.

3. Open your PRS account. Your chosen PRS Provider should be able to help you with this, and you can choose to contribute directly to them through PRS Online, or by visiting any of their branches.

4. Top up your funds regularly. Once you have your account set up, you can make your contributions at your own convenience. The more you contribute, the closer you will get to reaching your retirement goals.

The final word

Remember that with a little careful planning, a PRS can be a useful tool to help you in your wealth-building journey. By staying focused, disciplined and investing wisely, you can be assured of a comfortable nest egg once you reach your golden years.

To find out what other steps you can take to reach financial freedom, look out for the next article in our series on Your Personal Journey to Financial Security, only in theSun, brought to you by the Federation of Investment Managers Malaysia (FIMM).

Visit FIMM’s website for more details on Unit Trust Management Companies (UTMC) and PRS Providers, information on Unit Trust Schemes and Private Retirement Scheme, as well as the lists of approved funds.

Let the fun begin

Malaysia’s iconic theme park Sunway Lagoon reopened its gates on 7 October 2021 after being temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This long-awaited announcement is in light of the recent government’s advisory that Klang Valley is entering into Phase 3 of Malaysia’s National Recovery Plan from 1 October 2021.

A look into Sunway Lagoon’s official Facebook page which currently has around 430,000 followers has seen an overwhelming response in its comments section where fans are excited for Sunway Lagoon to reopen.

Guests are required to show proof that they are fully vaccinated before they enter the park in adherence to the SOP for theme parks that are reopening. Children that are not vaccinated have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian that has received their full dosage of vaccine. Face masks are mandatory except when dining and while in the water parks and water slides.

In a statement by Calvin Ho, Executive Director of Sunway Theme Parks who manages Sunway Lagoon, Sunway Lost World Of Tambun, Sunway Lost World Hotel and Sunway Organic Garden, “We are very pleased with the recent announcement by the Malaysian government. Sunway Lagoon has extensive safety procedures in place and during the recent temporary closure, we have made enhancements to our already strict standards.”

“Besides frequent sanitization at high touch points and limiting capacity at certain rides and attractions, public huts that used to cater to large groups has now been converted into private cabanas for families seeking a little more privacy in our outdoor 88 acres park. Sunway Lagoon will also cap its capacity to 50% of its total park capacity.”

A reopened Sunway Lagoon also means new attractions and promotions in place.

“We understand that families longed to be out in the open and spend quality time with their children in a safe and secure environment. As part of the stringent measure to create a safe environment for all our guests, we are introducing Camp Out! at Sunway Lagoon that will provide you with an extension of our Best Day Ever experience from morning till the next day.”

“Sunway Lagoon is centred on outdoor attractions which are pertinent in this era of the COVID-19 endemic. 90% of our attractions and rides are in the open-air.”

“We are very blessed with the natural environment where Sunway Lagoon is built. From a once abandoned tin mining land, our Chairman of Sunway Group, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah had the foresight decades ago to build an outdoor theme park and water park where families can gather to create a lifetime of memories.”

Sunway Lagoon together with Sunway Hotels (Sunway Pyramid Hotel and Sunway Clio Hotel) will also be launching staycations packages from only RM588 as part of its offerings in Amazing Sunway City Kuala Lumpur.

Stay Connected with UNIQLO 2021 Fall/Winter Collection

AS we step into a new lifestyle and embrace a smaller, more local and familiar world, UNIQLO dropped its new LifeWear 2021 Fall/Winter Collection, a sign of its aspiration to bring new perspectives and meaning to life.

Finding solace in neighbourhoods, UNIQLO’s new collection stems from the freedom of being able to be yourself in your own neighbourhood as these special places are vital in sustaining a high quality of life.

However one chooses to dress up, whether casually or stylishly, just to go to their favourite restaurant or even for a relaxing walk in the park, staying true to themselves plays a prominent role in discovering their own style.

With Neighbourhood Living standing as the main theme, this collection is broken down into four other sub themes as well which are Freedom in Motion, Need for Nature, Curated City Living and Rest and Recharge.

1. Freedom in Motion

As our new lifestyles have us reassessing our relationship with the natural beauty around us, the freedom to slide seamlessly between urban and natural settings blurs the boundaries between having fun and getting through everyday tasks. This collection provides freedom which allows one to dress up or down easily while also feeling comfortable and at ease at the same time.

2. Need for Nature

Social distancing has seen people increasingly spending time outdoors with family members and friends. Utility wear is perfect for hiking, camping, and other outdoor ventures as it is comfortable to move around in and maintains comfort even when the weather and temperature change abruptly. Items that are simple and functional, as extensions of everyday apparel, double the fun of life’s little adventures.

3. Curated City Living

People are adopting routines that keep them safe and sound while incorporating all that is great about city living. UNIQLO has employed innovative designs and functionality so people can look comfortable and neat even when they are busy working or doing household chores, offering wardrobe items that are free of excessive embellishments to complement comfortable and positive urban living.

4. Rest and Recharge

A vast majority are now working and exercising at home. UNIQLO has created a full range of apparel to help them remain comfortable and relaxed. Bedding has also been enhanced so people can sleep better and recharge to stay healthy while looking their best.

Survive if you can: 13 shows similar to Squid Game

Netflix’s Squid Game series has made it an instant hit with fans all over the world. In the show, a number of people who are desperate for money are lured into a competition where they have to battle to the death while playing children’s games.

It’s a violent and good binge watch, but it only lasted nine episodes. If you love shows like this, check out these flicks that are similar to Squid Game.

Alice in Borderland

If Squid Game seems to be a little mild for you, Alice in Borderland is a must-watch. The series is fast-paced and the stakes are higher. While hiding from police near Shibuya Crossing, three friends are suddenly transported to an alternate and dystopian Tokyo. They find they have no choice but to participate in deadly games to load their individual ‘visas’, or face execution.

Battle Royale

Battle Royale is considered the OG survival movie, and it’s based on a manga of the same name by Koushun Takami. The Japanese flick has gained cult status among fans to this day. In the near-future, the Japanese government kidnaps and sends groups of teenagers to a remote island. The teens are forced to murder each other in a twisted competition until a victor emerges. Those who refuse will be killed by the explosive collars they are forced to wear.

The Hunger Games trilogy

To punish the other districts for rebelling against the Capitol, one boy and one girl from each district in Panem are chosen via lottery to compete in a series of deadly games called the Hunger Games each year. Each game gets aired across Panem. The participants are called tributes and only one victor can emerge from the annual games. When Katniss Everdeen takes her sister’s place at the games, she becomes an unexpected symbol of hope for Panem’s citizens.

The Purge anthology

Imagine having one day in a year where you’re able to kill anyone or carry out your sickest fantasies without impunity. In The Purge, a wealthy family made the mistake of welcoming a stranger into their highly fortified home. The night quickly turns chaotic when the stranger disappears after a fight broke out at home. The family soon realise they have to survive the night when a murderous gang is at their front door.

Escape Room

Six people who are able to solve a puzzle cube are invited to join an escape room game to win a huge cash prize. The participants soon discover that they might not get to live through the game. Each room can lead to any of their deaths and their fates are in the hands of the Gamemaster.

As the Gods Will

As the Gods Will has drawn comparisons to Squid Game because the unfortunate participants have to play deadly children’s games too. However, this film is said to be way bloodier than Squid Game. A group of high school students across Japan are forced to undergo trials set by ‘gods’ who are animated versions of Japanese dolls. If the dolls aren’t appeased, they will not hesitate to kill.

Nerve

In the film, an online reality game called Nerve lets people enlist as Players or Watchers in a game of Truth or Dare. The winner of the day will receive monetary rewards. When a young woman named Vee (played by Emma Roberts) gets teased for her unadventurous nature, she joins the game to prove all her naysayers wrong. Along the way, the game pairs her up with a guy named Ian (played by Dave Franco). While the game starts out fun and exhilarating, it soon leads into riskier dares and descends into chaos.

Saw

Two men wake up in a room after having been knocked unconscious, with chains on their legs trapping them there. They soon discover that they are victims of the Jigsaw Killer—a serial killer testing his victims’ will to survive through ‘games’ involving murderous contraptions. This 2004 movie spawned a hit film franchise that features victims placed in near impossible scenarios and forced to make difficult decisions in order to live.

Jigsaw

Years after the death of John Kramer aka the Jigsaw Killer, five strangers wake up inside a barn with buckets on their heads and chains around their neck. A tape recording from John Kramer explains that they have been chosen because they have all sinned and must sacrifice some blood in a series of tests.

Kaiji

Based on a manga of the same name, Kaiji centres on a gambler and petty thief named Kaiji Ito. Kaiji is approached by a mysterious man who tells him he can win a large sum of money just by playing games aboard a ship. Each game has its own unique rules and the outcomes can range from mild to deadly.

Animal World

Animal World is a loose Chinese adaptation of Kaiji. Zheng Kaisi is in deep debt and is invited onto a ship called Destiny. Passengers on the ship engage in a game of rock paper scissors for money. Each player is given cards that correspond to rock, paper or scissors, and three stars which can be lost or gained through matches. To win and get off the ship, players need to finish all their cards and have at least three stars.

3%

This dystopian Brazilian show is set in a near-future Sao Paulo where 20-year-old residents from the impoverished Inland compete to enter a utopian offshore society. To do that, they have to compete in a series of tests called The Process and only 3% of participants make it through. Failure to do so means death so participants use any trick in the book just to make it through.

The Belko Experiment

An ordinary office day quickly turned violent when 80 employees of the Belko Corporation realise they are pawns in a deadly game. They are trapped in the office and are instructed to kill two of their co-workers within 30 minutes. If they refuse to kill their colleagues, everyone else will die. Factions start to form and betrayals are rampant.

Interview with Troye Sivan: Celebrating love and growing up

Since his debut, Troye Sivan has proven to be a multifaceted artiste. The Australian singer-songwriter quickly amassed a following – now having more than 7.44 million of subscribers on Youtube – and winning numerous music awards.

He was also sought out to model for the Pasha de Cartier luxury watch collection and recently walked Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty show.

His latest project is his brand new single, an intimate ballad titled Angel Baby. The dreamy track is full of yearning and romance, and will remind listeners of 90s synth glory. The Fader described the hook of the song as “pure George Michael,” another testament to Sivan’s talent as a music artiste.

In a recent teleconference interview, Sivan said: “Angel Baby is my crack at an adoring, doting, love struck, mega pop, gay power ballad. I thought we needed a few more of those.”

He also shared some titbits about the track’s highly-anticipated music video, saying that it would be just like the song which is “a complete fantasy”.

“It’s really a celebration of queer love in a really beautiful way,” he added. He was also coy when asked who will play his partner in the video.

“I don’t want to spoil anything but it’s not necessarily a man. It might be many... people,” he teased.

While the music video has yet to be completed, fans can enjoy a taste of it through a visualiser on Sivan’s YouTube channel (also included in video above).

After months of being away on stage due to the pandemic, Sivan shared that he almost cried when he got to perform again because he missed it all so much.

“There was a moment when I was speaking and I got choked up and have to take a second. It’s weird because I dreamt about this my whole life and then it all sort of came through,” said Sivan.

“And then it was snatched away and it almost made me think that the whole thing was just a dream or fantasy that I’ve had so when I was doing it again, I remember that ‘no, it was actually happening.’ It was such a nice moment to be able to look at people and actually smile and sing back the words. I missed it so much,” he added.

For Sivan, making Angel Baby was taking a different step in his artistic process.

“I just feel more confident and I think you can hear that in the music. I feel more confident vocally,” Sivan said.

Angel Baby for me, it was a new side to my voice. I felt that when I was singing and it felt really exciting. I think that’s just about a lot more confidence in the process,” he mused.

“It was different [compared to previous works] because I was in Australia. We started the song from afar and then I came back to LA late last year for a short period of time,” he said.

“And we went back to the studio and that was when I wrote the verses. I didn’t want to touch the chorus because the chorus was perfect before. We also wrote the bridge that day.”

When asked whether he has hobbies that influenced his creative process, Sivan shared that it was definitely nice to have another creative outlet.

“Yeah, I really love interior design. That’s a huge part of my life now. It’s kinda nice and fun to have another creative outlet and another way you can explore, express and create. I really went for it during the pandemic,” he explained.

The singer also took the time to reflect on his career and talked about growing up together with his fans.

“What’s crazy is I’ve seen my demographic changing over time and it’s so cool because I started making Youtube videos when I was 12, and I’m 21 now. Wait, I’m not 21, I’m 26 [laughs]!”

He continued: “So it has been a really, really long time and some people have been there the whole time ... and I’m just so, so appreciative that they’ve stuck around as long as they have.”

In terms of his own growth, he’s able to manage his time better. “I feel like I have sort of figured out how I want to split my time between Australia and America a lot better so I’m a lot less homesick,” he said.

“I don’t miss my family as much because I know I’m going to see them again soon. So I think I’ve kinda struck a bit of work-life balance and it’s making me really happy.”

Sivan shared that he can’t wait to meet his fans in Southeast Asia. “I miss you a lot and I can’t wait to come and hang out and to be somewhere warm.

“Hopefully, I’ll come when it’s like a really nice weather and we can all hang out and we can play a show,” he said.

Offering a helping hand

Public Bank continues to provide full support for its customers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, said Public Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Tay Ah Lek.

“With the gradual reopening of the economy, Public Bank understands that there are still customers who continue to require assistance. We are committed to supporting all our customers during these challenging times,” he said.

Proactively ensuring the financial needs of its customers are attended to, Public Bank had been offering financial assistance which includes moratoriums and targeted repayment assistance to suit their changing financial needs.

Public Bank has offered a moratorium to about 1.5 million customers with over RM210 billion loans during the first six-month automatic loan moratorium between April and September 2020.

On top of that, Public Bank has offered various flexible targeted repayment assistances to assist its customers. As of the end of Sept 2021, over 429,000 customers with more than RM76 billion loans continue to receive these targeted repayment assistance.

A multipronged approach to assist SMEs

Public Bank has also continuously supported the small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which play an important role from generating employment to contributing to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Apart from repayment assistance, ensuring SMEs’ continuous access to financing is vital and despite the tough operating environment, Public Bank has approved more than RM12.7 billion of financing to more than 50,000 SMEs since the beginning of the pandemic.

On top of that, Public Bank had also participated in various Government and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) schemes with an approved amount of RM3.4 billion which has assisted more than 17,000 SMEs.

Having access to finance by SMEs leads to creating employment, supporting livelihoods and contributing to the nation’s economy.

As one of the leading SME financiers with about 22% market share, Public Bank remained dedicated to this mission which can be seen in its annualised growth of 4.6% with total financing of RM68.3 billion as of June 2021.

Another aspect that Public Bank looks at is assisting SMEs in capacity building.

“It is very important that SMEs understand the fundamentals of running a business, particularly during unprecedented times as this. We have organised roadshows to keep them abreast with the options that they have as the pandemic continue to present us with uncertainties,” he said.

Public Bank had also been organising roadshows prior to the pandemic to deliver quality advisory services and address the information asymmetry issues faced by the SMEs.

Drawing large crowds from the SME community nationwide, these roadshows help to elevate their awareness and knowledge on the availability of funds and financing schemes. The pandemic did not stop these roadshows, which are usually held in hotels.

Instead, it continues with a virtual roadshow which showed a rise in SME attendees, with the next one scheduled on late October 2021 for customers in Sabah and Sarawak.

SMEs also continue to receive guidance from the Bank’s SME Helpdesk and SMEs may contact the Bank via email or telephone and for further information, they may visit the Bank’s website at https://www.pbebank.com.
