Sirim to test Covid-19 vaccines

WITH the government determined to ramp up the vaccination rate for Covid-19 around the country, it is now more important than ever to reassure the public about the safety and efficacy of the available doses. To aid in that task, Sirim has taken on the responsibility of testing incoming batches of Sinovac-CoronaVac (Sinovac) vaccines.

The Sinovac vaccines, which are being distributed by Pharmaniaga, will be delivered in two forms: pre-filled vials and in bulk quantities. According to Dr Ahmad Hazri Ab Rashid (pix), general manager of Industrial Biotechnology Research Centre (IBRC), Sirim, vaccines received in bulk require testing after undergoing the “filled and finished” process, where they will be filled into vials in order to be distributed to vaccination centres. The “fill and finish” process produces three batches per week.

The tests needed in Malaysia are part of the Manufacturing Process Validation, which measures criteria such as toxicity, stability, potency and microbiology of the vaccines to ensure the final product is of high quality and is safe to use.

There are three stages of process validation for vaccines, namely Stage 1 Process Design, Stage 2 Process Validation or Process Qualification, and Stage 3 Continued Process Validation. Upon approval, it would take a few more days until they can reach vaccination centres.

The tests are done by approved labs appointed by Pharmaniaga such as IBRC, Sirim, which is currently performing safety tests – Abnormal Toxicity Tests and Immunoassay (Relative Potency) and tests in animals (mice and guinea pigs). These tests will be carried out by six competent analysts and three technicians.

The tests are also governed by the USP Standards for Quality Vaccines covering 32 general and specific tests and the testing regime adopted depends on the type of vaccines.

How are the tests carried out?

The vaccines are delivered in two to three batches each week to the lab in special containers in order to preserve the temperature at 2°C to 8°C. The vaccines are then pooled and kept at room temperature for more than two hours before being injected into mice or guinea pigs.

These animal subjects will then be subjected to further testing to see the effects of the vaccines. For the abnormal toxicity test, abnormal behaviour, body weight and mortality are checked for 24 hours to seven days post-injection.

In the Immunoassay test, blood will be drawn 14 days post-injection for testing.

The ELISA kit will be used to detect the antibody titer (a measurement of how much antibody an organism has produced), and the relative potency ratio will be determined.

Animal testing has been approved within an ethical framework, and is a requirement by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency as these animals provide a biological correlation to humans, and relying on in-vitro (non animal) lab tests alone will not give an accurate reflection of vaccine efficacy or safety for human use.

Once approved, the vaccine vials will be sent for distribution to vaccination centres following strict standard operating procedures in terms of product tracking and storage temperatures.

Samples from released batches will be kept for further testing of shelf life and stability studies.

If the vaccines tested do not meet the criteria, the tests will be repeated to see whether any errors were made. Vaccine batches will not be released to the general public if there are still unresolved issues following repetitious testing.

At the moment, Sirim is testing only the Sinovac vaccine, but has also contacted companies distributing the Sputnik and Can Sino vaccine, offering its testing services if needed.

Sirim Berhad has developed the facilities and capabilities to perform a number of these tests and is continuously working with the government, other scientific testing laboratories and the pharmaceutical industry to provide comprehensive service support to ensure the country is able to undertake a vaccine development programme.

Can’t stop the music

WHAT do you do when you trip and fall just before reaching the finish line? If you’re Icelandic electronic musician Daði Freyr Pétursson, you stand back up, dust yourself off and keep on moving.

Music fans around the world first took notice of him in the lead up to Eurovision 2020, where he had been set to represent his country with the song Think About Things, one of the favourites to win that year, thanks in part to a catchy dance routine accompanying the song.

Daði recorded and performed the track with his backing band Gagnamagnið, which is made up of family and friends – wife Árný Fjóla Ásmundsdóttir, sister Sigrún Birna Pétursdóttir, and friends Hulda Kristín Kolbrúnardóttir, Stefán Hannesson, and Jóhann Sigurður Jóhannsson.

The band was an instant hit at live performances, dressed in matching teal outfits with pixel-art images of their faces.

Sadly, Eurovision 2020 was cancelled due to Covid-19, but Daði got a second chance at this year’s Eurovision competition set to take place in the Netherlands in May. He had written another song, 10 Years, with another hit dance routine.

However, right in the middle of rehearsals in Rotterdam, tragedy struck. One of the members of Gagnamagnið was found to have contracted Covid-19, and the entire band was forced to sit out the live performances and submit a recording of their rehearsal for the competition.

It was a testament to their sheer talent that Iceland still managed to place fourth at Eurovision 2021, mainly due to audience votes from across Europe.

Despite having his Eurovision dreams cut short, Daði is back at work, focusing on promoting his first EP, Welcome, as well as preparing for a world tour.

BUZZ managed to catch up with him in Berlin, Germany where he lives with his wife and Gagnamagnið bandmate Árný – who is pregnant with their second child – and their toddler daughter. In an email interview, the musician talks about his Eurovision experience, and shares his plans for the future.

It’s been almost a month since Eurovision 2021. How was the overall experience of being there in Rotterdam, up until the Grand Final?

“The experience was fun the first week. We got to go to the arena two times for rehearsals, and it was cool to see the other contestants face to face.

“When one member of Gagnamagnið got Covid, we had to isolate ourselves in our rooms. To be honest, that was a pretty boring week. All in all, it was a good experience but I wouldn’t say that it was that much fun.”

What other Eurovision acts did you personally enjoy seeing, and why?

“I didn’t see any of the other acts live, would have been cool to see Go_A (representing Ukraine) since I’m a fan of their music. Also Gjons Tears (Switzerland) and The Roop (Lithuania), because I met them last year and they are super nice people.”

You still managed to place fourth, but do you wish things had gone a little differently?

“It makes me feel good that people enjoyed our performance, fourth place I feel is really good. But it’s not the reason we competed. The reason we competed was to actually go and experience what it’s like to compete in Eurovision, we didn’t get to do that, and I don’t see myself ever going back to the competition.

“There are mixed feelings about the whole thing.”

How has life been like for you post-Eurovision?

“Life has been good ... well, my wife got Covid so we had to isolate for two weeks after we came to Iceland. But now we are in Berlin and I’m getting ready for baby number two, and starting work on my debut album. I’m done with competing in Eurovision, at least for now. I don’t know how I will feel in some years, but right now I don’t see myself ever stepping on the stage as a contestant.”

How would you describe your particular sound? What are your main musical influences?

“I just make music that is fun for me to make. I don’t think too much about the genre but I listen to a lot of indie/synth/funk-pop and make most of my music on synthesisers so I guess it’s easiest to call it Synthpop.”

Right now your biggest hits involve catchy beats accompanied by a distinctive dance. Is that going to be your signature, or do you see yourself evolving into something else in the future?

“No, my biggest hits are Eurovision songs, so that’s where the dances come in. I might do some more dancing but only if it feels right, I don’t want to force it. I’m not a dancer, I just make music.”

You’re currently preparing for your tour across Europe and the US next year. Can you tell us a bit more about that?

“I am so excited to finally play in front of people again. Last time I played a gig it was in Iceland and I was ecstatic to have sold out a venue of 250 people. [Recently], I sold out a 3,000 capacity venue in the Netherlands in less than two hours.

“The change that has happened since I last played a gig is so huge to me, and I just can’t wait. I have put a band together with my friends Pétur and Ylva and I think we are going to be making some unforgettable parties.”

How do you feel about the prospect of touring again?

“I am a little nervous since the venues I will be touring are a lot bigger than the ones I am used to, but mostly just excited. I have been playing music live for over 10 years and I think I’m ready for whatever comes my way.”

You’re also branching out into other things, such as video games and a beer collaboration. Is that all part of building a brand for yourself aside from just being known for your music?

“It is in some ways a part of building a brand, but also I just like doing different things. I never want to reach the point where my art is boring to me, then I will start doing something else. And part of keeping things interesting is trying new things.”

What can we expect from you and the band in the future, in terms of new music?

“I’m working on an album to be released in 2022. Daði & Gagnamagnið is going on hiatus for a while since we are not taking part in Eurovision anymore. Maybe we will do something together later down the line, but I am a solo musician, I write, produce, record and perform the music myself.”

Would you like to say anything to any fans you may have in Malaysia?

“Thank you for listening, hope to come to Malaysia soon!”

Taylor’s Borderless Learning help culinary students to continue learning from home

Taylor’s University learned quickly how a global health crisis could impact in-person classes during the SARS epidemic in 2002. Not wanting a repeat of events again, the university quickly adopted a Borderless Learning approach into its entire curriculum.

Taylor’s Borderless Learning approach features state-of-the-art equipment and features which help online classes run smoothly. I get to experience this first hand during Taylor’s Culinary Institute’s (TCI) Macaron Decorating Masterclass conducted by Chef Aaron Tang.

During the class, Chef Aaron uses a remote to control a mounted top view camera with zoom capabilities and converse with students via a two-way headphone with microphone. Students can send in their questions using the chat box which will be received by Chef Aaron on a Smart TV. A mounted lighting helps to illuminate the demonstration tables well.

Our first task as students is to mix the ingredients to make chocolate ganache for the macarons. I find that it was easy to follow the instructions because I can get a close-up view of the demonstration table although I was all the way at home. By the end of the class, I’ve successfully made delicious chocolate ganache to go with the macarons.

Aside from these features, a part of Taylor’s e-Learning masterplan included the development and deployment of Lightboards. Lightboard is a glass board that records what lecturers write in real time which can be directly included in lecture videos. The university has also invested in a virtual lab simulator called Labster, a realistic first-person “simulator” that allows users to practice conducting experiments without worrying about time and risk. Taylor’s University integrated Augmented Reality (AR) and gamification elements into its classes too.

Nabilah Abdul Gafur, Taylor’s Culinary Institute’s first-year student testified that the integration of technology into TCI’s curriculum as a positive move for students, especially for those studying across the borders.

“As an international student, Borderless Learning has been a massive help to me during this pandemic. With this concept, I have the flexibility to access learning materials at my own convenience, so I can understand the module, assignment and the techniques at my own pace and not fall behind on my education, at the comfort and safety of my home. The ability to interact with lectures also helps me improve my communication skills,” said Nabilah, who is an Indonesian native.

Taylor’s Culinary Institute Director, Chef Frederic Cerchi said, “As conditions are volatile, with positive COVID-19 cases steadily rising each day, TCI needed to mitigate risks of classes being put on hold yet again. As the culinary and hospitality programmes are much more hands-on in nature, we worked closely with our e-Learning experts to develop and enhance the university’s e-Learning innovations and capabilities to ensure our lecturers and students are able to reap the full potential and benefit of online learning. Even if it means we are cooking in different kitchens.”

The e-Learning enhancement for TCI sees the innovative integration of technology to its kitchen-classroom settings, equipping it with a state-of-the-art lecture system to conduct practical learning sessions. “Since then, we have carefully curated our programme offerings to ensure it is a mix of theory and practical training, even when we are unable to conduct face-to-face classes. The implementation of TCI’s Borderless Learning into our curriculum ensures our chef-lecturers and students are able to continue their classes no matter the situation,” he added.

Building on the success of Borderless Learning, TCI will be running an online cooking competition “Beyond the Boundaries of Taste” from 28 June to 28 July 2021. The national competition is open to all diploma students majoring in culinary arts, and participants will stand a chance to earn bursaries of up to RM5,000 to enroll in Taylor’s Advanced Diploma in Patisserie and Gastronomic Cuisine, along with a guaranteed 3 months Internship at a Michelin Starred Restaurant in Summer 2022 and a Certification of Participation.

For full terms and conditions of the online competition, please visit TCI’s Instagram page (@taylors_culinary_institute).

Life hacks to reduce lockdown stress

Are you feeling restless and agitated like a caged cheetah or feeling lethargic in this extended lockdown? You’re not alone. Thanks to the internet and social media, people around the world have been sharing life hacks that have kept them sane during their time indoors. Here are some life hacks you can follow to save your sanity!

Exercise

Those who feel lost because they don’t have a fitness trainer to motivate them during workouts can find similar workout videos online. The good thing about most exercises such as callisthenics relies on your body weight so you don’t need to purchase extra equipment unless you want to.

Have flowers in the home

Staying indoors for too long can take a toll on mental health and stress levels. A beautiful way to manage being stuck indoors is to introduce plants especially flowers into the home. Some research suggests that looking at flowers can reduce pain and stress levels. It’s also a pretty and elegant way to spruce up the decor at home. Taking things a step further, you can consider taking up the art flower arrangement as a means to relax and occupy your free time.

Do a puzzle

Our stresses often come from doing the same and repetitive tasks daily. This stress doubles when work never seems to end because not everyone knows how to respect after work hours. To save your sanity, remember to take a rest break for a few minutes to stretch and surprise surprise tackle some fun puzzles. Whether it’s a jigsaw puzzle, a word search puzzle or a logic puzzle app, these short game breaks can help lower stress levels and is a low tech, therapeutic activity.

Tidying up

While artists exclaim that messes reflect creative minds, working in clutter may not be for everyone. If you’re someone who finds calmness in an organized space, it’s time to take some time to declutter and reorganize the home. Start with something small before tackling larger items. When it’s all done, you’ll feel calmer and ready to do the next item on your things to do list.

Choose the right lighting

The right lighting can help improve moods too. Too much harsh white light can be glaring and uncomfortable while too much yellow light can make everything look dim. Mix up the lighting in different sections of the home such as having calming, yellow lighting in the bedroom.

Clean up social media accounts

Due to events in the past few years, we truly see the true sides of our friends online. Sometimes, what they say is becoming toxic day by day. They could have fallen deep into the conspiracy theory hell hole. Your mental health comes first so it’s a good time as any to start weeding out the toxic people in your social media timeline. If you’re afraid of causing drama from removing problematic friends, social media platforms have introduced nifty features which help you limit seeing their posts. Keep the circle of friends or the people you follow small and life is so much calmer.

Put on the chef’s apron

It’s time to experiment in the adult lab which is the kitchen. Some people get hung up about cooking because they feel they’re bad at it and they don’t know what to do. It helps to allow yourself to make a complete mess or butchering the perfect recipes. The idea is to learn how to have fun like children once again. Once you let loose, the thought of cooking and baking will be enjoyable and you’ll soon make delicious treats for yourself and the family.

Quick and easy cleaning hacks for your home

Clean window tracks easily with a modified sponge

Window tracks can be tricky to clean due to the different widths of the tracks. For a quick clean, you just need to make your own personalized cleaning sponge. First, get a big sponge and line it up with the window track. Mark the lines or rails on the sponge. Next, cut where you’ve marked but don’t go all the way through. With that done, you can now slide the sponge along the window tracks easily and accurately to mop up the grime.

Organize bathroom items beside your sink in a tray

The bathroom sink counter is usually narrow and can collect dust easily at corners. To make cleaning easier, organize items such as the soap dispenser, toothbrushes, toothpaste and mouthwash on a tray. This way, you can quickly wipe the counter without removing each item on it one by one. A tray also helps to collect water droplets from drying toothbrushes and can be drained or wiped down easily.

Pick up hairs easily with a modified broom

Hair strands clogging up the brush of the vacuum cleaner? This won’t be a worry any longer with this nifty hack which just requires a tiny modification. Stick a duct tape at the edge of your broom or wrap it in plastic and it’ll pick up dust and hairs without issues. To discard, just remove the tape or plastic and chuck it into the bin. Alternatively, you can also use double-sided sticky tape.

Sushi myths debunked

This article was first published in theSun Buzz Sushi & Shows edition. So yes, you can enjoy watching these shows while having a plate of yummy sushi!

ONE of the many reasons why most people refuse to give Japanese food a try is due to the prevalent sushi myths they have heard. Today, we unearth and debunk some of the sushi myths once and for all so that everyone can expand their gastronomic selections.

Myth 1: Sushi is a Japanese thing

Truth: Sushi may be a Japanese thing but most countries in Southeast Asia have a variation of this. This is because using vinegar is the best way to preserve fish. A long time ago, cooked rice and vinegar were packed around fresh fish to preserve them before refrigerators came along.

Myth 2: Sushis are expensive

Truth: Just like all dishes around the world, there are both cheaper and expensive options for the same food. There are cheaper sushi sold in supermarkets which are just as good as the more expensive fares in fancy restaurants.

Myth 3: Some sushi fish are served alive

Truth: Sushi fish that are served alive are known as ikizukuri, which is a different area of Japanese cuisine.

Myth 4: Salmon is a traditional sushi fish

Truth: Contrary to popular belief, salmon, while very common these days, wasn’t a traditional sushi fish, because it spoilt quickly. It only became popular when refrigeration came to Japan.

Myth 5: Rub the chopsticks together to get rid of splinters

Truth: Chopsticks are rubbed together to create a rough surface to help pick up noodles easily. However, rubbing the chopsticks together in a place owned by a Japanese person is considered rude and insulting.

Myth 6: There’s a specific grade for sushi fish

Truth: There is no special grade of fish to make sushi. What’s important is that the fish meat used must be fresh and presented in a way that eliminates bacterial growth. A sashimi grade fish basically means a fish that is fresh enough that you can safely eat it raw.

Myth 7: Miso soup is an appetiser

Truth: In Japan, miso soup is usually what you eat for breakfast!

Myth 8: Sushi pairs with sake

Truth: Sushi and sake are both made out of rice and it’ll be too much of the same thing. Sushi is usually paired with green tea or beer.

Myth 9: Sushi is an everyday food

Truth: A lot of us think the Japanese eat sushi everyday but that’s not true at all. They believe in having balanced meals, and eating sushi daily does not provide that at all. Sushi is still great as a quick meal or snack though.

Myth 10: Sushi must always be eaten with soya sauce

Truth: It’s not necessary to always eat sushi with soya sauce because the rice is already properly seasoned on its own. It all still comes down to preference. Just don’t drown the sushi in the sauce plate.

Getting to know sushi

This article was first published in theSun Buzz Sushi & Shows edition. So yes, you can enjoy watching these shows while having a plate of yummy sushi! Check out these sushi myths we debunked too.

Japanese restaurants are a popular sight in food-loving Malaysia. However, it turns out that people are often hesitant to fully explore the menu, because they don’t know what to expect. Here’s a quick debriefing on the most popular food in a Japanese restaurant – the sushi.

First off, ‘sushi’ actually refers to the vinegared and sticky rice. However, it has come to colloquially mean any small bite-sized food rolled up with seaweed and rice. If you flip through the menu, you’ll see ‘sashimi’ being served as well. A sashimi refers to the raw fish, and it’s served without the sticky rice and seaweed (also known as nori). Sashimi is usually served draped over a garnish such as daikon (shredded Asian white radish) and accompanied by one perilla leaf per slice.

Another type of sushi is known as the ‘nigiri.’ The nigiri or nigiri-zushi is usually a slice of raw fish sitting atop a bed of sticky rice. It’s also important to note that not all sushi are served with raw fish. Some sushi have cooked ingredients and vegetables such as avocado, Japanese cucumber and sweet potato.

The most recognizable sushi of all is the ‘maki.’ A maki is simply a rolled and cut sushi. It can be found in grocery stores and is great as a quick meal for the day. On the other hand, a makizushi is typically fish and vegetable strips laid in rice and rolled inside a long nori into a cylinder. It’s then cut into six to eight pieces to be served.

An ‘uramaki’ is the opposite of a maki, and is sometimes known as an ‘inside-out roll.’ This is because an uramaki is rolled with the seaweed inside while the other ingredients, such as the rice, are on the outside.

A gunkan-maki is an oval-shaped sushi wrapped with a strip of seaweed and topped with various ingredients such as ebiko (shrimp roe), which usually looks like it’s overflowing on top.

A crowd pleaser is none other than the tempura. A tempura can be either fish or vegetables that are lightly fried in batter. It can be eaten solo or incorporated into sushi rolls as well.

Another popular sushi is the temaki or hand roll. A temaki is easily recognizable due to its seaweed cone which holds all the fish, rice and vegetables inside.

The inari or inari-zushi is a tasty sweet sushi. This sushi is encased in a pouch of fried tofu, and typically only contains sushi rice.

All of these types of sushi can be enjoyed with condiments such as shoyu (soy sauce) and wasabi (a green, spicy paste made out of Japanese horseradish). Due to its spiciness, wasabi is an acquired taste for many so it’s best to try a little for the first time.

As you make your way through each page of the menu, you’ll find more terms that you may not be familiar with. While you can ask the server what it all means, it’s also good to know a few terms on your own. Here are some words you’ll see on the menu and what they mean:

Aji: Aji is a flavourful Spanish or horse mackerel, usually served as sashimi or on sushi.

Amaebi: Raw shrimp that’s naturally sweet and usually served on top of finger sushi.

Anago: Glazed, barbecued saltwater eel

Chutoro: Deliciously buttery tasting fatty tuna belly meat

Ebi: Cooked, butterflied shrimp

Hamachi: Japanese yellowtail fish, usually served raw

Hotate: Yummy sweet sea scallops

Ikura: Fresh salted salmon roe, which looks like large, shiny, orange-red balls.

Masago: Fresh salted smelt roe with a crunchy texture

Maguro: A generic word for all types of tuna

Sake: It’s a salmon

Uni: It’s a sea urchin roe and looks like tiny, yellow tongues. Despite its appearance, it’s really delicious.

Unagi: Glazed, barbecued freshwater eel.

Sushi rolls for beginners

Now that you know the different types of sushi, it’s time to tuck into the good food, but what should you order? The best way to start your gastronomic journey in a sushi restaurant is to try the popular and basic rolls first. Here are some rolls you’ll find in most sushi menus:

-> California roll: A California roll is the most popular roll in any Japanese restaurant. It has real or imitation crab meat (cooked), avocado and cucumber wrapped in a big piece of seaweed (nori) into a cone.

-> Shrimp tempura roll: It’s just fried shrimp with crunchy battered flakes. It just takes one bite and you’ll want more.

-> Philadelphia roll: It has salmon, avocado and cream cheese wrapped in seaweed.

-> Boston roll: A Boston roll has cooked shrimp, avocado and cucumber in it.

-> King crab roll: This yummy roll only has cooked king crab meat and mayo.

-> Vegetable roll: Perfect for vegetarians and vegans, a vegetable roll contain an array of raw or cooked veggies and fruits such as carrots, shiitake mushrooms, cucumber, avocado, mango and spinach.

-> Salmon roll: Ordering a six-piece salmon roll is a good way to experience eating raw fish meat for beginners. The raw salmon meat is wrapped together with strips of avocado and Japanese cucumber in seaweed, and these three ingredients can act as a buffer to the raw meat for first-timers.

How to eat sushi the right way?

Sushi is best eaten using chopsticks instead of a fork to prevent slips and spills. However, it’s important to remember that the chopsticks should not be rubbed together. This is because the act implies you think the food quality is poor, and it’s seen as rude. If there’s no fork available and you struggle using chopsticks, eating sushi with your hands in a restaurant is perfectly acceptable too.

Next, pour a touch of soy sauce into a small dish and dip one piece of sushi, fish side in. The reason why you shouldn’t dip the rice into the soy sauce is because rice is like a sponge. It’ll absorb too much soy sauce and overwhelm the rest of the sushi flavours.

For those who want to add wasabi, use a chopstick to slowly graze the top of the sushi with a little bit of wasabi. Too much wasabi will also overwhelm the rest of the sushi flavours.

The sushi should be eaten whole to completely enjoy the full flavour. The sashimi and the other small rolls are usually small enough to be eaten in one bite while the larger, Americanised rolls may require a few bites to finish.

Contrary to popular beliefs, the slices of pickled ginger aren’t supposed to top the sushi. The pickled ginger slices or strips should be eaten on their own because they acts as a palate cleanser. This prepares your mouth for your next bite, so you can fully enjoy the following sushi flavours.

With all of this info in your arsenal, you can enjoy feasting on an array of delicious Japanese food. Even if you don’t remember all the terms, it shouldn’t stop you from experimenting and trying new food and flavours.

Loki director Kate Herron shares the ‘nerdy’ process of building the set

If you’ve loved the Loki sets so far, you’ll want to get familiar with the name of the production designer. To bring the world of Loki to life, filmmakers turned to none other than Kasra Farahani.

The set of the Marvel Studios’ series was created in Georgia and utilized Pinewood Studios sound stages and locations around the state. Due to the schedule, building practical sets and using real locations was a necessity for production.

“A big part of that was building out the TVA and building sets that could be flipped and turned over, and building all of the hallways and building all of these locations so that it could be a real lived-in world,” said co-executive producer Kevin Wright.

“Kasra has gone above our wildest, wildest dreams,” Wright added. “At the speed of which this show moves, it’s almost every week, we’re moving into new spaces and new sets. Every time, you can see on the actors’ faces as soon as they walk in that they’re blown away. Real, practical, lived-in spaces elevate everything. A real standout of this show are these amazing sets that Kasra has built for us.”

Having practical sets and locations also worked very well for Autumn Durald Arkapaw, the director of photography, who enjoyed shooting in a real space.

Some of these locations include a quarry in northern Georgia which became a mining town; an Atlanta downtown hotel became the home to the Time Variance Authority’s archives; and a vacant discount store transformed into Roxxcart, a futuristic superstore with merchandise costing at sky-high, inflated prices.

The scene in Renslayer’s office is a real office with an actual ceiling with practical lighting built in. Another example is filming the time theatre scenes in a Brutalist space with ceilings and lights, which created a sense of scale and grounds the scenes.

It was this grounded, tactile, real-life feeling that director Kate Herron wanted. “It was amazing when Kasra pitched his ideas because I remember there were images in his pitch that were in my pitch. Already from the get-go it just felt amazing to know that we already had that common ground and that we both were aiming for the same story.“

Herron further explained why shooting in a real environment is important. “The sci-fi I really love has this kind of gritty realness to it, and it’s not so unbelievable that it doesn’t feel like something too far away from our future now. But there are just little hints, like the security robot, for example, in the set that remind you that you’re in the future.”

As it happens, Buzz had an opportunity to have a chat with director Kate Herron about the sets and locations of Loki.

1. What was the most challenging thing for you as the director?

I think for me it’s paying respect to what’s come before Loki and also having a good reason to go back into his character because he’s a beloved character. We’re taking a Loki from Avengers who’s obviously at a very different emotional space to the Loki we’ve seen grow and change across the MCU. So, the challenge then becomes how this new Loki reacts to this new area of the MCU we’re taking him.

2. Was it all filmed in green screen? What were some of your favourite locations to shoot and the challenges it posed?

We actually built a lot of our sets. It’s really important for me for TVA to look like this living, breathing place and having classical sets really allow us to do that and we use effects to really just enhance all the sets they went to. One of my favourite locations is the location at the beginning of episode 2. It’s just because I’m very nerdy so I had a lot of fun filming that.

3. Were there any challenges filming in the pandemic?

Yeah. We were about halfway through filming and then obviously like the rest of the world, we had to go home and stay inside. I think for me I just try to make the best of it with the team and we’re editing everything we’ve already filmed.

I think that was very helpful in the sense that it really helped us inform the rest of the show as we went back in. Just tonally we’re kinda seeing ‘ok this really works’ or ‘maybe isn’t landing how we thought it would.’ There are also the little details the actors were bringing in as they were finding their characters which we think ‘that’s really cool’ and we want more of that.

Obviously, it was already quite a challenge making a show of this scale but we had an amazing safety team with us. I’m really grateful to the casting crew because we did all have to isolate for a long time to get it finished. Everyone was just really grateful to be working so we all took it very seriously.

4. Were there any particular shows or movies you used as inspiration to bring the show to life?

Oh there are so many! The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Metropolis, Blade Runner, Brazil, The Jetsons, Jurassic Park... We’re pulling left right and centre of all kinds of things. Basically I love scifi and I want the show to be kind of a love letter to scifi so we pulled inspiration from far and wide.

5. Can you tell us more about the decoration and design of the TVA and the thought process that went into it? The interior of the TVA seems to be inspired by the 70s and 80s and since the TVA controls time, I thought they would have kept up with the times.

Yeah, I thought what was fun about it was that I used to work in a lot of offices and even those things like the computers aren’t even the latest computers. It was like “oh if you break it, we’ll replace it.” I liked the idea that the people at the top of the tree kind of not have the most up to date tech in that sense.

I thought it was interesting because we had this mixture of Brutalist architecture which fits the godlike characters called the Timekeepers who oversee the TVA but then we also have a Midwest Madmen style because the TVA is very heroic.

The TVA aren’t really in the past and they’re really not in the future. They’re outside of time and space so it felt like we can kinda have a bit of fun with pulling in different areas of architecture and design, and also give it a new spin.

6. Will there be a second season or is it a limited series?

I always thought about it as just 6 hours of storytelling because I’m still finishing the show so I don’t know but never say never. I don’t know what Marvel is planning but we designed the show in these 6 episodes.

7. What was it like working with Tom Hiddleston and the whole crew?

It was great and really enjoyed working with the writers. I thought the stories were excellent and it was such a cool new way to explore Loki, and where we are going to take that character. Tom is a delight. Very lovely, very charming and he was an executive producer in this as well so we collaborated quite closely on story and just across the show generally. It was all so fun to work with all of our cast.

8. What can we expect from the show?

Oooh, I would say it’s an epic adventure of identity!

The cast of Black Widow share about filming intense action scenes together

The Black Widow film has been delayed several times and it seems like it’ll be finally showing in the cinemas soon on July 8, 2021.

The film follows Natasha Romanoff/ Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) on a journey to confront the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. To do so, she also needs to deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships she left behind when she became an Avenger.

Black Widow promises to be an exciting and action-packed spy thriller. With Natasha’s past as a formidable agent, the audience will get to see more of her Black Widow family namely Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz) and Alexei Shostakov/ Red Guardian (David Harbour).

“I wanted to create something really visceral and fun, but to talk about Natasha as a human being. To let audiences see a side of her that they had never seen before,” said director Cate Shortland.

Diving into Natasha’s past will also shed more light about the Red Room where young girls were groomed to be super assassins. This means the fight scenes will be way more intense and gruelling as compared to the other Marvel films combined, as teased in the video below.

“There are some of the most intense fights we’ve had in the MCU,” Scarlett Johansson said in the Ready Set Action featurette.

Aside from being physically intense, the family reunion is emotionally charged. Florence Pugh indirectly gave some clues about the relationship between the estranged family in the film.

“All the fighting in this film is so emotional and about not knowing how to say what you feel,” said Pugh, who’s rumoured to carry on Natasha’s mantel as the next Black Widow.

“It sort of doesn’t feel like a movie. It feels real,” said Rachel Weisz.

While not much is revealed about the plot in detail, the featurette showed that it will be set in Budapest. Budapest was first referenced in the MCU film in a conversation between Natasha’s Black Widow and Hawkeye during the Battle of New York.

What took place in Budapest between the two wasn’t fully addressed in the films but perhaps the upcoming Black Widow film will answer it once and for all in the big screens.

July is a month away. While we patiently wait for the film’s release, enjoy this message from the cast of Black Widow.

Father’s Day gift ideas

This article was first published in theSun Buzz HERE

Although dad says he doesn’t want any gifts for Father’s Day, there’s no harm in surprising dad with a present that he can use. Show him how much you appreciate all he has done for the family with these thoughtful gifts.

Earphones or headphones

Getting dad a good and comfortable earphone or headphone set might help cut down the frequency of loud videos being played from the phone. Such devices also make perfect gifts for dads who love music. It’s even better if the headphone or earphone comes with noise-cancelling features so dad can put the whole family on mute on this special day too!

Bluetooth shower speaker

Dads who love to sing can carry on in the shower with a Bluetooth shower speaker. After a long day, dad can let loose and rock out to his favourite tunes while getting clean.

Grooming kit

Men with beards only look good if the beard is maintained well. Help dad look his best with the best grooming kit to keep those facial hairs in pristine condition. Your mum might even thank you if it helps keep him away from her own skincare products.

Robot vacuum

If your dad has been complaining about the amount of hair fall on the floor, perhaps it’s time to get a robot vacuum. It’s also a handy gift for fur parents. Some robot vacuums come with a mop function, which will make cleaning the home easier. It’s much more convenient if the vacuum can be controlled from an app so the house can be cleaned even if dad isn’t at home.

Perfume

Even dads love to smell good. Help dad by picking out a good perfume or cologne that isn’t pungent. You can even rope in mum to help with the selection too. Maybe you might even find a perfume for both of your parents too.

Watch box

For dads who are watch collectors, it’s only right to get him another and better watch box. Watch boxes help keep his watch collection in order and safe from scratches. It can also double as a display case. If you’re able to splurge, it’s a good idea to get dad a spinning watch box, called a watch winder, to keep automatic watches working for a long time even when not worn.

Pillow

As our dads grow older, it’s important for them to be able to rest better. Get dad a good pillow or mattress if the old ones are worn out. A good pillow and mattress can help prevent body aches and injuries.

Magnetic desk mat

Getting a magnetic desk mat will help dad keep his workspace and table organised. Some mats can hide away loose papers and notes, and come with a magnetic cable holder to keep wires organised. These desk mats can come in silicone or PU leather. Getting a silicone mat may be better because it’s easier to wash and clean.

Burdened with glorious purpose: The Making of Loki

When Tom Hiddleston played Loki in Marvel Studios’ Thor a decade ago, the character quickly won over fans with his charm and charisma. Everyone thought it was the end of Loki when he was killed by Thanos at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War. Love him or hate him, the Marvel Cinematic Universe would have been a poorer place without its resident trickster.

So, when Kate Herron got wind that a Loki series was going to be made, she literally pestered her agent to get her in the director’s chair. She even went as far to create an elaborate pitch and utilised a whole wall to put forth her vision.

“I remember leaving that first meeting with Kate feeling like this is a person who understands the spirit of what we would love to achieve, and she wasn’t just going to execute those ideas but was going to push them even further,” said co-executive producer Kevin Wright.

“She had an extensive visual pitch that was unlike anything I had seen. She left no scene unturned and had a complete vision of how to translate this series to screen and create something wholly unique to the MCU.”

Herron shared that she was immediately drawn to the story when she read Michael Waldron’s script. “What I really loved about the story when I first got the script was that it was this really big, ambitious sci-fi story,” said Herron.

“But, in disguise, really, it had another story going on. That’s definitely what drew me in. [Loki] had one of the best arcs, I think, across the MCU, and we’ve seen him change so much over a decade. The exciting thing as a storyteller was to go back to where we see the Avengers’ Loki, and he’s a completely different guy to the person that we have seen in the recent movies. What really excited me was that he still has all this road to travel.”

Although Loki only appeared in the films for less than two hours over the course of ten years, he has become a fan favourite character to everyone’s surprise including Tom Hiddleston.

Knowing how much fans love Loki, Marvel Studios filmmakers knew they didn’t want to invalidate Loki’s death and sacrifice at the hands of Thanos. It was really important to have a premise that allowed for a new story that doesn’t undo everything the audience have known and loved about the journey Loki has been on.

In the films, Loki’s story is always tied to his connection with his brother, Thor, and his family. British actor Tom Hiddleston, who also serves as an executive producer on the show, knew that Loki needed to evolve and thus, posited questions of his own during meetings with Marvel Studios filmmakers: “Where do we go now? What have we not done? What’s new? What’s original?”

“That was the most inspiring conversation,” recalls Hiddleston. “I remember leaving it thinking, this is going to be very, very new because the character has got so much breadth and so much depth. That’s been the gift to me as an actor. Loki is almost this endlessly fascinating box of tricks where the moment you think you know him he reveals something else.”

Knowing that Hiddleston is a treasure trove of information regarding Loki’s place in the MCU and his relationship with the other characters, Herron jumped at the chance to draw out this knowledge for the benefit of all the cast and crew.

The ‘Loki Lecture’ held by Hiddleston helped make sure everyone was on the same page and working from the same angle. The lectures also helped Owen Wilson to bond with Hiddleston and bring his character Mobius up to speed regarding Loki’s character.

For head writer Michael Waldron and his team, it was an exciting challenge to run with all these crazy ideas and to show another side of Loki.

“It was obviously a big, crazy thing with a lot to figure out. It was like, how do we take that character and everything we love about him, and tell a whole new story?

“The big idea from Marvel was the Time Variance Authority. I was like this is the craziest thing in the world, but it was really exciting,” said Waldron.

“My pitch was to do something nobody expects and with every episode let’s blow up what people think the show is and do something totally different. It was always about doing something awesome and totally unexpected with this character,” he added.

Marvel Studios’ Loki is currently available on Disney+ Hotstar. Catch new episodes premiering every Wednesday.

Exclusive interview with Loki series head writer Michael Waldron

Marvel Studios’ Loki sees the return of the God of Mischief who gets apprehended and recruited by the Time Variance Authority to help stop a bigger threat. BUZZ had the opportunity to get a bit more info from the head writer of the series, Michael Waldron.

What’s the overarching theme of the Loki series?

“Great question. I’m still trying to figure that out myself. The best TV stories, it’s about somebody getting a reckoning of identity with who they are and who they want to be.

“Loki encounters an incredibly powerful organisation [in charge over] all of time. They’re uniquely suited to hold up a mirror to him and make him ask himself who he really is. And that’s something thematically that myself and the writing staff are excited to explore.”

Will this version of Loki reunite with Thor on good terms, or at least remember their bond?

“I’m curious about it myself and I think that’s also something fans are curious of. This is obviously the 2012 Loki that picked up the Tesseract and disappeared with the space stone.

“His relationship with Thor is very different from the Loki who reconciled with Thor in Ragnarok and then lost his life in Infinity War.

“It’s exciting to get to tell a totally different story of Loki wondering if those two will ever reunite again.”

Does Loki get to see the future threats to come when he’s with the Time Variance Authority (TVA)?

“I think that question is exactly why the TVA is an interesting organisation to put Loki up against because they have so much power.

“So when Loki looks at them and realises: ‘Oh man, if I had access to what these guys have access to, imagine what I can do with that information.’

“And that will be bad news and so that’s why he’s drawn to them in our show and that’s what makes an interesting partnership.“

Can you give any hints about the ‘bigger threat’ that Loki has to apprehend?

“Only that it’s a threat that Loki is uniquely suited to face off against. What that means is that the audience will just have to tune in to find out.”

What are the influences when it comes to writing for the show?

“The team was inspired by a lot of other shows and films. Rick and Morty [Waldron won an Emmy last year for writing and producing season 4 of the hit animated series], Blade Runner was one, Zodiac, Maniac on Netflix, and different great bits of sci-fi and hardboiled detective stories like Catch Me If You Can.”

What can the audience expect from the Loki series?

“I think they should expect the unexpected (laughs). Like Loki himself, they should expect a show that’s a little bit of a shapeshifter. We try and do a lot.

“It’s just when you think you know where the show is going and you really try to change direction and surprise people and it is first and foremost a thriller and a sci-fi crime thriller.

“People should expect to hopefully be on the edge of their seat as they watch it.”

There’s a rumour saying we get to see a female Loki and a kid Loki, is that true?

“Where does this stuff come from? (laughs) I can neither confirm nor deny, except to say that the TVA has access to all of time and space and different versions of different people and so it’s an exciting place for Loki to find himself in the middle of.”

Do you think there will ever be a Dr Strange, Scarlet Witch and Loki team up in the future?

“Like that cool comic panel that everybody is sharing? (laughs) That will be cool. You’re gonna have to talk to whoever is writing the new Dr Strange .. oh wait! It’s been fortunate to write now for all of those three characters.

“They’re all amazing, all played by three great actors. I think it’s exciting what the future holds for all three of them for sure.”

Are there any fan favourite characters making a surprise cameo in the series?

“Wouldn’t you love to know? Tell everybody here right now. I’d say there’ll be a new fan favourite, and it’s going to be Owen Wilson’s character Mobius. I think he’s going to be a character that people are gonna love to watch.”

Define the series in three words.

“Time travel disaster.”

Pablo Chabot, Marketing Director at HEINEKEN Malaysia said: “Edelweiss has a distinctive golden cloudiness and delicious fruity aftertaste. But it is about more than just great taste. It has this crisp, cool bite that leaves the drinker feeling refreshed. We have crafted this wheat beer to capture the spirit of the snow-capped peaks of Europe, where Edelweiss was born. We also want to bring people a wheat beer with the freshness of the Alps in every sip, even while they are staying home.”

Celebrate Ghostbusters 37th anniversary and Ghostbusters Day in style

Happy Ghostbusters Day! If you aren’t sure what this day actually means, you’re not alone. In a Ghostbusters Day video with producer Ivan Reitman, Bill Murray appears not to know what is Ghostbusters Day either.

According to Slashfilm, Ghostbusters Day first started in 2016 to coincide with Paul Feig’s female-driven Ghostbusters movie which has been officially titled Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. While the film didn’t get a positive reception from manbabies, the franchise is picking up again with another Ghostbusters film.

The new film Ghostbusters: Afterlife leans heavily into the nostalgia of the original movie that we all love. The release of the film is also significant because Ghostbusters recently celebrated its 37th anniversary of the original movie.

So when is Ghostbusters Day actually? Since ghosts never rest, it’s only right to celebrate ghostbusting every day.

“I think every day is a ghostbusting day, but the fact that there’s a designated one now means maybe we’ll get a lot more busting done,” said Bill Murray. “I think if we can all apply ourselves and focus, be a little more diligent, [we can] get rid of some of these ghosts.”

The anniversary also comes with the release of new merchandise such as:

- New #PlasmaSeries Classic Figures that glow in the dark from Hasbro. Get the toys through the end of June HERE

- Hasbro Mini-Pufts toys with 3 alternate heads, which can be ordered online HERE

- T-shirts featuring designs from around the world by artists such as @VochelleYum, @JohnYurcaba, @StuartReeves, and @BrendanPearce.

Get the tees through the end of June HERE

Look out for Ghostbusters: Afterlife which is set to be released on November 11, 2021.

The animated comedy adventure follows a socially awkward middle-schooler named Barney who might finally get a friend when his dad bought him the highly anticipated B Bot.

Barney named his “Best Friend out of the Box” Ron. Unfortunately for Barney, Ron isn’t like the other B Bots because it’s ‘socially awkward’ in a robot way.

Ron’s hilarious malfunctions, set against the backdrop of the social media age, launch them into an action-packed journey in which boy and robot come to terms with the wonderful messiness of true friendship.

Ron’s Gone Wrong features the voices of Zach Galifianakis (“A Wrinkle in Time”), Jack Dylan Grazer (“Shazam!”), Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), Ed Helms (“The Office”), Justice Smith (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”), Rob Delaney (“Deadpool 2“), Kylie Cantrall (“Gabby Duran and the Unsittables”), Ricardo Hurtado (“The Goldbergs”), Marcus Scribner (“Black-ish”), and Thomas Barbusca (“Chad”).

First look images of Money Heist Part 5 show the gang in dire straits

Netflix unveiled the first images of the final season of La casa de papel (Money Heist)! The first images reveal the chaos both inside and outside of the Bank of Spain.

The cliffhanger final episode in the previous season saw Sierra holding the Professor at gun point in his secret hideout and Lisbon safely reuniting with the rest of the gang in the bank.

With the Professor incapacitated (hopefully temporarily), the Gang must now bring out its toughest side to survive, fuelled by anguish, more weapons and the desperation of not having a plan.

Money Heist showrunner and executive producer Alex Pina revealed that fans will see a lot more of the female characters in the final season.

“Are they going to play a crucial role at certain times? I would say very, very crucial. And we’ve added a new twist involving women in this fifth season,” said Pina.

However, Pina asserted that the show has always consciously given both male and female characters equal limelight to carry the story forward.

“I think we have always worked equally well with women and men. In that sense, we remain committed to giving women a leading role, as at other times, men also have a leading role. I don’t think it is more or less: it remains the same,” he added.

Money Heist Part 5 will have ten episodes and is divided into two volumes to be released on September 3 and December 3.

Are you ready for the final battle #ForNairobi?!
