Time has never been more frightening in M Night Shyamalan’s Old

Getting bored with the usual fares available on television? This summer, visionary filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan unveils a chilling, mysterious new thriller.

Titled Old, the film is based on a graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters. The story is about a family whose tropical holiday turned deadly when they discover the secluded beach they’re relaxing in for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly. Their entire lives are reduced into a single day.

Watching the trailer upped the scare factor of the film too.

Youngsters start to develop wrinkles while their bodies age uncontrollably and an unseen entity is seen lunging towards a couple.

While M Night Shymalan hasn’t been consistent with his films, Old might be another potential comeback for the director.

The film Old stars some of the industry’s greatest actors such as Gael Garcia Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Abbey Lee, Aaron Pierre, and Alex Wolff as the helpless family.

Rounding up the cast are Kathleen Chalfant, Alexa Swinton, Nolan River, Kylie Begley, Embeth Davidtz, Eliza Scanlen, Emun Elliott and Thomasin McKenzie.

Old will be showing in cinemas on 22 July 2021.

What to pack if you’re going for quarantine?

This article was first published in theSun Buzz HERE

Malaysia is still not out of the woods from the Covid-19 pandemic despite the ongoing vaccination efforts. With the recent high number of cases, we’re bound to know someone who needs to undergo mandatory quarantine.

Quarantining in a place other than your home can be scary. If you know someone who’s about to spend a few days at the quarantine centre, hopefully, this list of things to pack and what to expect will help allay their fears.

Arriving in Malaysia

Based on the guidelines by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia, all Malaysians and non-Malaysians arriving in Malaysia are required to provide their test results of the Covid-19 RT-PCR test.

This test must be conducted three days before arrival to Malaysia and presented to the health authority at the point of entry.

If the test result is negative, it must be indicated in the form of a certified laboratory report or a report issued by a registered medical practitioner. It’s also important to note that the test result must be written in English or Bahasa Malaysia.

Upon arrival, travellers must undergo a mandatory quarantine and they’ll be assigned to a hotel or a government-designated quarantine centre. The quarantine period for those returning from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka was recently extended to 21 days, while the quarantine period for all other travellers remains at 14 days.

Why vaccination is important

This article was first published in theSun Buzz HERE

Covid-19 brings the possibility of serious, life-threatening complications for anyone who’s infected. Thus, getting vaccinated against Covid-19 is still a safer way to build protection for yourself and everyone around you without falling ill first.

Covid-19 vaccines are only approved and authorised for use after it is showed that they are safe and effective in clinical trials. The known and potential benefits of getting vaccinated far outweigh the risk of getting infected.

While we know getting vaccinated is important, it’s unfortunate that not everyone is eligible to get the Covid-19 vaccine. Infants, young children, some of the elderly and those with serious underlying health conditions are discouraged from taking the vaccine.

To protect these vulnerable groups, the responsibility lies on those who can take the vaccine to get vaccinated as fast as possible.

It goes without saying that the Covid-19 pandemic has taken a lot of lives over the globe. Families everywhere have lost the people they love dearly or are separated from each other for months due to the lockdowns.

The only way to regain some sense of normalcy, reunite families and prevent more loss of lives is to make sure everyone gets vaccinated.

When more people in the society are vaccinated, the higher the chances are to achieve herd immunity to protect everyone and keep the Covid-19 virus at bay for good.

In Malaysia, more than a million Malaysians have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine without suffering from ill side effects. According to the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), this is evidence that it’s safe to be vaccinated and will help Malaysia to be on track to achieve its target of herd immunity sooner.

“If everyone cooperates, we will be able to meet the nation’s target of having at least 80% of the people vaccinated to achieve herd immunity by February next year,” said MMA president Datuk Dr M. Subramaniam.

However, people in rural areas may not be aware of the importance of vaccination. To manage this, Subramaniam said health and social workers should travel to these rural areas to educate the communities there so that they are also protected from the Covid-19 disease.

Village chiefs and MPs should also be roped in to help dispel doubts and apprehension about the vaccines and their side effects, and encourage communities to sign up for vaccination.

Malaysia is doing its best to meet its target of achieving herd immunity by February next year with the ramping up of vaccinations throughout the country.

Here’s to hoping more of us can get vaccinated soon. In these urgent times, medical experts agree that the best vaccine is the one that is first available to you.

Tips for sanitising the home

This article was first published in theSun Buzz HERE

THE SARS-COV-2 virus which causes Covid-19 isn’t going away anytime soon. Based on an updated study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the SARS-CoV-2 virus is less likely to spread by surface contamination than once thought before.

However, it doesn’t mean we can go back to the way we once were. Everyone still needs to practice good hygiene habits and here are a few tips on sanitising the home.

Wash and moisturise hands

One of the very first steps we can take is to remember to wash our hands with soap daily. It’s especially important to wash our hands after coughing, sneezing or when we return home after getting groceries. While the virus is less likely to spread by surface contamination, the risk is still there.

The World Health Organisation recommends everyone to wash and scrub their hands for 20-seconds, which is about the duration of a Happy Birthday song. If you cannot find a sink and soap to wash your hands, a hand sanitiser works just as well.

A hand sanitiser isn’t a cure-all but it helps keep germs and viruses at bay.

Frequently washing our hands with soap can dry out our hands fast too. As such, it’s important to remember to moisturise our hands after washing. This is because dry, cracked skin increases our risk of getting infections.

Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces

Cleaning and disinfecting are two very different things. Cleaning removes contaminants from the surface while disinfecting kills the pathogens. Hence, it’s beneficial to carry out both cleaning and disinfecting especially if you have had visitors over.

To make the task as seamless as possible, the first place to clean and disinfect is the high-touch surfaces in the home. High-touch surfaces are areas where it’s frequently touched such as doorknobs, table surfaces, chairs, kitchen counters, faucet and faucet knobs, toilet seats and the flush handles, light switches and TV remote controls.

To clean, wipe the surface with a hand towel and soapy water or a cleaning spray. This helps to remove the layer of dust and debris. The next step is to disinfect. To do this, apply a surface-appropriate disinfectant using disinfecting wipes or disinfecting spray.

According to the head of infection prevention and control at the Oregon Health & Science University Dr John Townes, if a disinfectant has an indication for killing influenza, RSB, SARS virus or other coronaviruses, “it should work against” SARS-CoV-2 virus too.

If you are out of disinfectants at home, you can make your own homemade bleach disinfectant spray. Just mix four teaspoons of household bleach and one litre of water into a spray bottle and shake it vigorously.

Spray the homemade bleach disinfectant on the surface and leave it for 10 minutes before wiping it away with a wet cloth.

Remember to wear gloves and keep the windows open if you’re cleaning using bleach. Do not mix bleach with other cleaning products and be aware that bleach can damage or discolour sensitive surfaces.

Disinfect your gadgets

Another high-touch surface is our gadgets such as our smartphones, laptops, gaming consoles and tablets. To disinfect our smartphones and tablets, use a disinfecting wipe or alcohol solution (at least 70%).

Make sure the front screen, buttons, sides and the back of the smartphone and tablet are wiped down. It’s also important to wipe down the phone and tablet covers too.

When it comes to cleaning our laptops and computers, avoid using disinfecting wipes on the screen. This is because laptop displays aren’t always made of glass.

For example, matte displays are plastic and wiping them with a strong solution may cause damage. To make sure the gadgets are cleaned safely, wipe the surfaces such as keyboard, trackpad, mouse and the exterior surfaces with isopropyl alcohol (70%) solution and a soft towel.

Shower and wash all clothes upon returning home

Similar to washing hands, it’s good to quickly shower and throw all the worn clothes into the washing machine upon returning home. While we may be masked up, we can’t be sure if the sneeze and cough particles or other contaminants are stuck to our clothes and hair.

The usual laundry detergent does a good cleaning job. However, you can wash the clothes in the warmest appropriate water setting to be safe. This is helpful if you’re washing the clothes of someone who’s sick or is under home quarantine.

Disinfect bedrooms and bathrooms when someone is sick

If you find yourself having a family member under home quarantine, it’s important that they have a separate bedroom and bathroom to use.

Since no one can clean up their room, it’s helpful to provide them with some cleaning and disinfecting supplies too. Cleaning and disinfecting supplies to be included are disinfecting wipes, hand sanitisers, tissues and paper towels.

If the person in-home quarantine can’t clean, the person who’s going into the room to clean and disinfect must wear a mask and put on gloves. It’s important to limit contact with the person who’s sick so just clean the areas around the person. Last but not least, it’s good to open windows to increase air circulation at home.

With these tips, hopefully, everyone will be able to keep safe and lessen the spread of Covid-19 infection.

Out of the shadows

This article was first published in theSun Buzz edition HERE

What do you do when something that was once your safe haven turns into a source of pain? For musician Lucinda Chua, her solution was to pick up the art of embroidery, which helped her embrace her heritage and return to music with a fresh perspective.

Chua is a South London-based singer, songwriter, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Raised in Milton Keynes, she has English, Malaysian and Chinese roots. Growing up as a mixed-race kid in an overwhelmingly white area, she found solace in art, photography and her local music community.

She began learning music from the age of three using the Suzuki method, which meant she largely played by ear. She regards music as a natural form of non-verbal self-expression.

By the time she was in her 20s, she had caught the attention of US indie label Kranky, released two albums with her first band Felix, and even toured with Stars of the Lid as a cellist and string arranger. She has also performed with English singer-songwriter FKA twigs’ live band for her Magdalene tour in 2019, whilst self-releasing her debut solo EP Antidotes 1.

She has performed solo across the UK and Europe, including at the Red Bull Music Festival London, MUTEK Barcelona, Tate Modern and Somerset House, earning praise from publications like Pitchfork, The Guardian, Dazed and gal-dem.

However, last year in the midst of the pandemic, she decided to take a break from music, as a result of heightened tensions brought about by discussions of racism on social media and within the music industry. The situation inspired a journey of self-discovery for Chua, as she sought a new method of expression.

For nine months, she stopped listening and playing music entirely. Instead, she immersed herself in the meditative process of sewing and embroidery.

This quickly became an outlet for her to chronicle new discoveries about her heritage. When she emerged from her musical hibernation, it was with a new sense of identity, as well as a jacket she designed with motifs inspired by ancient Chinese culture, which she wears with pride.

BUZZ had the opportunity to have a chat with Chua about her second EP Antidotes 2, which was released on May 7, and the story of her growth during lockdown.

Tell us about Antidotes 2, and what listeners can expect from the EP.

“Antidotes 2 is the sister record to my first release, Antidotes 1. The process of making 1 felt like building a world, something textural and explorative. 2 feels a lot more intimate and personal – I am living right inside it, stripping back the layers.”

What’s the inspiration behind your single, Torch Song?

“For me, Torch Song is a love song for the self. It’s about feeling invisible and the desire to move and be moved. To be a river running but buried under stone, or a pile of leaves waiting to be carried by the wind.

“Many beautiful moments can feel fleeting when there is no one there to see.”

What’s the significance of the first track in Antidotes 2, Until I Fall?

“I think it’s easy to focus on growing upwards, or moving forwards, we forget that life comes in cycles. The higher one climbs, the easier it is to be afraid to stumble or fall, but a fall can be exhilarating – it’s a chance to release the things that are no longer serving us, a rebirth.”

The jacket looks amazing! Can you share with us the creative process and how you came up with the designs?

“Thank you! With live shows getting cancelled in 2020 and being grounded at home, I found myself with a lot of time. For the first time I didn’t have any desire to connect with music. I spent a lot of time at home listening to audiobooks, and whilst I listened, I taught myself to embroider.

“I was inspired by different creatures from Chinese mythology, but I interpreted them in my own way. Each of them represents a moment in time for me, like tattoos that I wear on the outside.

“It was a way for me to feel connected to my culture whilst I was separated from my friends and family and to remind myself of who I am outside of music.”

Was it hard to learn embroidery? Do you plan to continue honing this newly gained skill?

“It’s not something I had ever done before, I taught myself by looking at pictures and figured it out as I went. I think traditional Chinese embroidery is so stunning, such an eloquent way to convey a story, it has definitely been an inspiration to me.

“The dragon was my first piece, you can’t see on the jacket but the back is very messy! By the time I had done a few, I was a lot neater and had learned how to control the threads better.

“I hope to continue doing it because I love the process of sewing, it is like a meditation. My dream is to collect threads from each city I tour, so I can sew a diary of my travels and have something that will always remind me of the memories.”

How was your experience working with FKA twigs?

“FKA twigs is a very talented, ambitious and hardworking artiste but she is also an incredibly kind, sensitive and generous person. I really enjoyed our time working togethert.

“The shows were magical, it’s something I am very proud to have contributed towards. But some of my favourite moments were the small things, like making each other herbal teas on the tour bus, thrifting through vintage stores on our days off or going out dancing and letting our hair down.”

What attracted you to the cello?

“When I was very little, I saw a girl play the cello. She was a few years older than me and she had red hair. I just thought she was really cool and I wanted to be like her.”

What’s in store for you next?

“I don’t actually know the answer to that, but I hope it’s something nice!”

What would you like to say to your Malaysian fans?

“I really hope I can come to play for you. I have so many happy memories of Malaysia from my trips as a child, picking rambutans in my grandma’s garden, going to the market with my dad, eating food at the hawker stalls, paying respect to my ancestors at the cemetery.

“I have never visited as an artist, and I would love to have the chance to share my music and connect in a different way.”

Augment your reality

This article was first published in theSun Buzz edition HERE

SNAPCHAT recently announced a host of new features at the Snap Summit 2021. One new feature will allow Snapchatters to shop and try on clothes and accessories virtually, while standalone app Story Studio lets them edit high-quality videos on the fly, along with an inclusive camera to capture darker skin tones accurately. Find out more about the new features HERE

One of the more exciting features is Connected Lenses. Connected Lenses allow Snapchatters to build or carry out an activity together, no matter where they are.

BUZZ had the opportunity to speak to Qi Pan, the director of Computer Vision Engineering at Snap, about some of the upcoming features.

Can you tell me more about Connected Lenses?

“Most of the Augmented Reality (AR) experiences that exist on Snapchat allow you to experience AR on your own, and the social aspect comes when you share the video with your friends.

“With Connected Lenses, we want to go into the next generation and for the first time, you can actually experience the AR experience together with your friends and family. It’s a shared experience and a real-time interaction between multiple users.

“We have two versions of this. One is the remote Connected Lenses, where you’re in a different place from your friends and family, and you can do something together, like build a Lego set [while] sitting on the table or the living room floor.

“The second version is where users use Connected Lenses in the same room and build the Lego on the same table together.”

Which feature are you most excited about?

“For Lens Studio 4.0 [which was] released today, I’m probably excited about Connected Lenses and Body Mesh reconstruction. This is really an amazing understanding of people and the scene around you.

“You can do hand gestures and things like that, and it can be understood by the Snapchat camera. This is very exciting when combined with Connected Lenses because it can recognise other people in the scene and it tracks with them.”

Other than building Legos together, what are the other future activities users can do using Connected Lenses?

“Connected Lenses really opens up the AR world and the shared experience. We’re also looking into utility and other things we can do and go beyond entertainment.”

Does the feature need constant data connection work? Can it work offline?

“For Connected Lenses, you’ll need to be online to experience [it], because we rely on real-time data stream. For a lot of the other features, it’ll require a connection to get the Lens, but once you get the Lens you won’t need to use data.

“For example, the Body Mesh Reconstruction is running on the phone itself, so it doesn’t need to send or use up data. All the processing is happening locally, and offers a great experience because it’s instant.”

Everyone is using different types of phones. With all these new features, will it slow down our phones?

“Some of the features need quite a lot of processing power, but we generally try to design it so that it can be used by phones with [either] a fast or slow CPU. If the phone has lower computational power, we try to tune it down, so you can still have a great experience. We try to tune it so the feature works well across all phones.”

Since Snapchat focuses a lot on virtual and augmented reality, do you think the public is still hesitant to embrace this technology?

“Snapchat has embraced AR in a different way compared to other companies, in that people are using augmented reality without knowing necessarily that it’s augmented reality. We’re seeing the end-user creativity rather than us telling them it’s augmented reality.

“If you look at Face Lenses, for example, people see these amazing, creative ways to express themselves and we don’t necessarily say this is AR or this is not AR. We’re saying this is a really good way to communicate. I think that’s probably the best way for the public to adopt AR: by not actually thinking they’re specifically adopting AR but through gaining enough value-added experience.”

vivo’s driving factor in the competitive M’sian smartphone market

Within the nation’s competitive smartphone industry, vivo Malaysia has carved its name as one of the brands to witness a steady and consistent growth. Marking its continuous commitment towards its customers, the brand has earned its most recent title as “Top Smartphone Vendor in Malaysia” for Q2 and Q4 of 2020. Growing from strength to strength, the brand recorded an impressive 25% shipment share and 21% market share in Malaysia during Q4 2020, according to the Canalys report.

As the brand celebrates its 7th year in local shores, celebrity entrepreneur, Jeff Chan took the opportunity to host a candid fireside chat with vivo Malaysia’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mike Xu, and vivo’s Senior Marketing Director, Southeast Asia Business, Brandon Lim, to find out more about what makes up vivo’s winning factor.

Through the 3-part video series, Jeff sought to uncover valuable insights into vivo’s journey in Malaysia and how it stays ahead of the curve, by engineering innovative devices that meets consumers’ demands and beyond.

Focus on caring for its employees

In the interview session with Jeff, Mike was quick to point out that a brand is only as strong as its workforce supporting it and the recognition is only made possible through the relentless support and drive of vivo’s employees.

Mike emphasized on how vivo continues to prioritise and empower its staff and candidly divulged the one factor he looks for in every candidate. He shared how a love for the brand is a key criteria for each and every one of its employees and this marks the basis of how vivo builds its workforce. The vivo Malaysia team has grown from a humble nine employees and with more than 5,000 dealers all across Malaysia, now serves an estimated 2 million users per annum in the local market.

“At vivo, we are thankful to have not only the trust of our customers, but the support of our employees, partners and dealers as well. Through this, vivo constantly strives to deliver products which are authentic, of good quality and are user-friendly to meet our customers’ needs,” said Mike.

Customer-first mindset

Brandon could not agree more as he elaborated vivo’s customer-first mindset which has shaped vivo’s way of work. This includes how smartphones should elevate the digital lifestyle of its user and enable them to explore the beauty that life has to offer.

vivo’s prime ethos is to deliver products and services that cater to its customers’ needs, be it a smartphone with impressive photography capabilities to capture life’s best moments, or one which is innovative and ahead of its curve.

“It is vivo’s belief that technology should not be complicated and should serve as a tool to help our customers lead a better life, which encapsulates our brand promise, “Joy of Humanity”. One way that vivo stays competitive as a brand as well, is to continuously be relevant. As we listen to what our customers want, including their pain points and aspirations in life, we are better able to design a product that helps them to achieve their desired outcome,” said Brandon.

Innovation at its core

With the upcoming launch of the vivo V21 5G Exclusive Edition, it comes at an ideal time as the government announces earlier this year its MyDigital Blueprint, which is put in place to fast-track 5G infrastructure developments in Malaysia. As the nation progresses towards becoming 5G-enabled, vivo in turn has powered a series of its flagship devices with the capabilities of 5G, including its recently-launched vivo X60 series and the soon-to-be released vivo V21 5G Exclusive Edition.

Enabling Malaysians to be among the first in the country to enjoy 5G at their fingertips when it becomes a reality in local shores, the upcoming vivo V21 5G Exclusive Edition ensures a smoother, more efficient, and more powerful connectivity experience for browsing and mobile entertainment through vivo’s innovative 5G technology. The device is ideal for users who demand a future-proof smartphone which also reflects vivo’s major strides in industry-leading research and development in the 5G technology.

As of February 2021, vivo has applied over 2,000 5G invention patents and submitted over 5,000 5G proposals to the telecommunications standard development organizations of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). In the meantime, vivo has also started research and exploration of 6G, which is expected to be launched around the year 2030. More immediately, as Malaysia is now moving towards a 5G rollout and with consumers moving over to 4G/5G enabled devices, there is more room for growth and vivo is ready for this revolution as it is well-placed to support Malaysians with the next level of devices.

Malaysians will soon be able to have a first look at a device which is sure to partner them through life’s best moments, as the vivo V21 5G Exclusive Edition is set to hit local shores. The dual-mode 5G phone, combining proprietary 5G antenna technology, consumes less power but is more powerful and more stable than single-mode 5G phones. The hyper-fast 5G connectivity allows users to enjoy 4K UHD live streams and CPU-intensive games as well.

The vivo V21 5G Exclusive Edition will be available in Malaysia from 27 May 2021. For more information on the new vivo V21 series, visit vivo’s official Website or check out vivo Malaysia’s Facebook and Instagram.

Full trailer of Marvel Studios’ Eternals shows first glimpse of new superheroes

Marvel Studios’ Eternals welcomes an exciting new team of Super Heroes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The epic story, spanning thousands of years, features a group of immortal heroes forced out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s oldest enemy, The Deviants. In the comics, the Deviants (or also known as ‘the changing people’) are a fictional race of humanoids with some form of physical or cosmetic mutation. While we aren’t told of their motives yet, it’s likely the Deviants are out to take over Earth.

“We have watched and guided. We have helped them progress and seen them accomplish wonders,” Salma Hayek’s Ajak mused in the trailer. “Throughout the years, we have never interfered — until now.”

The outstanding ensemble cast includes Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena. Kit Harington plays Dane Whitman, who becomes the sword-wielding hero Black Knight in the comics.

Eternals will be the 26th Marvel Cinematic Universe movie and the third film in the MCU’s Phase Four.

Directed by Academy Award–winner Chloé Zhao, Eternals will be shown on November 4 in Malaysia.

Wesak in other cultures

This article was first published in theSun Buzz Wesak Day edition HERE

The festival marking the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha is celebrated differently around the world.

On Wesak Day, which falls on May 26 this year, Buddhists all over the world commemorate events of significance to Buddhists of all traditions: the birth, enlightenment and the passing away of Gautama Buddha.

As Buddhism spread from India it was assimilated into many foreign cultures, and consequently Wesak is celebrated in many different ways all over the world. Here is just a glimpse into how Buddhists everywhere mark this spiritual occasion.

Bhutan

In Bhutan, Lord Buddha’s Parinirvana or Duechen Nga Zom falls on the 15th day of the fourth month of the Bhutanese calendar (Saga Dawa) which is usually around May or June. The whole month of Saga Dawa is considered auspicious and the import and sale of meat is banned in this holiest month.

On the day of Duechen Nga Zom, devotees across the Kingdom offer prayers and butter lamps in temples and monasteries. The devotes also turn the prayer wheels and make offerings to gain spiritual merits, which is said to double on this special day. In the nation’s capital, Thimpu, devotees will gather at Tashichho Dzong, a Buddhist monastery and fortress which is also the seat of government, the throne room and the offices of the king.

Nepal

Wesak Day is a public holiday in Nepal and is known as Buddha Jayanti. Devotees will flock to Lumbini – the birthplace of Buddha – and attend religious processions around the Kathmandu Valley while reciting Buddhist scriptures. Many people will also don pure white clothes and abstain from eating meat.

At the temples, prayers, sermons and talks on Buddhism are held to spread the teachings of Buddha. People are also encouraged to do good deeds such as donating food, giving financial aid to charities and donating blood.

South Korea

Buddha’s birthday (seokga tansinil) in South Korea falls on the 8th day of the 4th month in the Korean lunar calendar. The highlight of the event is the Lotus Lantern Festival. The festival has roots reaching back over 1,200 years.

Major cities such as Seoul will host grand parades featuring Buddha replicas and other cultural icons such as dragons. Participants also carry lotus-shaped lights to symbolise purity and wisdom. The rest of the celebrations include traditional performances and folk games.

Thailand

Buddhism is integral in Thai society. In fact, young men are encouraged to be ordained as monks for a period of time as a rite of passage. It’s no surprise that Wesak Day (Visakha Puja) is a major celebration in Thailand. Devotees will flock to temples and make offerings to gain merits.

At the temples, monks will give religious sermons and people give offerings such as food, flowers and candles to symbolise the finite nature of material things. The people also observe the five precepts which include refraining from consuming intoxicating substances. As such, bars and clubs are closed to avoid serving alcohol.

Indonesia

Indonesia is home to the world’s largest Buddhist temple and one of the religion’s holiest sites, the Borobudur Temple. Situated right in Central Java, thousands of monks will perform a unique ritual known as the Pindapata on Waisak Day. The monks will circle the temple while praying to receive charity and blessings for the people in Indonesia.

There is usually a large procession between ancient Buddhist temples, starting from the Mendut Temple in Java to Borobudur. Devotees also release sky lanterns as a symbol of light and enlightenment. It’s a wondrous sight to behold at night with the full moon shining bright.

China

On Buddha’s Birthday (fódàn), devotees observe Bathing of the Buddha by pouring scented water over a statue of the infant Buddha. The act of bathing Buddha symbolises the cleansing of minds from negative influences and starting anew. Devotees also recite sutras and light the incense at the temple. Caged birds are released to gain good karma.

Japan

Wesak Day in Japan revolves around flowers especially the lotus flower. According to legends, lotus flowers sprang from where the infant Buddha walked. During the Bathing of the Buddha, devotees will sprinkle the Buddha with ama-cha, a type of sweet tea mixed with a variety of hydrangea leaves.

They will also leave a garland of lotuses around the Buddha’s neck. The main event is the Kanbutsu-e or Hana-matsuri (Flower Festival) which is usually held in April to coincide with the blooming of the cherry blossom.

Sri Lanka

Vesak is a public holiday in Sri Lanka. On this day, all liquor shops and slaughterhouses are closed to make sure no death takes place during the celebrations. Locals decorate their houses and the streets are filled with candles and lanterns.

Decorative gateways depicting different parts of Buddha’s story known as pandols are also erected on the streets to symbolize enlightenment. There will also be Dansalas which is a free buffet for monks and the underprivileged.

Cambodia

Buddha’s Birthday is known as Visak Bochea in Cambodia. It’s considered a public holiday and visitors will see Buddhist flags raised above temples and paraded in the streets by monks. The monks also carry lotus flowers, candles and incense. People usually offer the monks alms too.

Myanmar

On Wesak Day, Buddhists in Myanmar carry earthen pots of water to water the sacred Maha-Bodhi tree (a holy Banyan tree), under which the former Prince Siddhartta attained enlightenment and became Buddha.

Wesak Day also falls on the month of Kason which is the middle of the hot season.

Thus, watering the beloved Banyan trees ensure these trees will survive the dry weather. The act of watering the trees is an expression of piety and respect too.

It is fascinating to see how different cultural elements add a unique touch to the celebrations. BUZZ would like to wish a safe and blessed Wesak Day to all those who celebrate it.

Wesak Day explained

This article was first published in theSun Buzz Wesak Day edition HERE

Wesak Day or Vesak is a celebration to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha who founded Buddhism. As such, the day is also known as Buddha’s Birthday.

It’s celebrated during the first full moon of the ancient lunar month of Vesakha, which is usually around May or early June.

This year, Wesak Day is celebrated next Wednesday, May 26.

The celebration is observed by Buddhists and some Hindus in South and Southeast Asia, including Tibet and Mongolia.

Celebrations typically start from dawn with pujas (devotional worship including meditation) at the temple with a renewed determination to follow the five precepts.

A Bathing Buddha ceremony will be held as well. Devotees will bathe the Buddha statue as a symbolic gesture to wash away bad karma and starting anew.

In some places, captive animals and insects will be released to symbolise liberation. However, this practice of releasing animals is banned in some countries such as Singapore. This is because these living creatures may not survive in the wild in the long run or tip the ecosystem.

What are the five precepts?

The five precepts are also collectively known as the panchasila. It’s a code of conduct to help Buddhists live a morally good life and achieve enlightenment.

The five precepts are as follows:

1. I undertake the precept to abstain from taking life, both humans and all animals

2. I undertake the precept to abstain from taking what is not given.

3. I undertake the precept to abstain from sexual misconduct.

4. I undertake the precept to abstain from telling lies

5. I undertake the precept to abstain from intoxication through alcohol, drugs or other means.

We hope that this little explanation offers an insight into Wesak Day, one of the many religious and cultural celebrations that makes Malaysia a unique country to live in.

Data Asia to accelerate SME digitization

Despite the surge in digital adoption rate among Malaysian consumers since the first movement control order in March last year, small-and-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are slow to catch up.

According to Virtualtech Frontier (VTF) founder Jason Low, a large portion of SMEs have yet to digitalize their business. As such, over 30,000 SMEs have closed in 2020 alone following the decline in business and the inability to cope with high overhead costs.

As more businesses are adopting digitalization to ease the impact of the pandemic, those who are left out are finding it difficult to survive. The main challenges for SMEs in digitalization are insufficient technology, skillset, and funding. Many SMEs owners also find that they do not know how and where to digitalize.

Low, who has worked as SME digital enablement specialist for 5 years said, “packaging digital enablement tools to SMEs requires a different pitch altogether.

“Typically SMEs are run by owners who believe and have been successful in using the traditional methods of reaching out to customers. Cloud computing, data analytics, and internet-of-things (IoT) are big words which they may not understand.

“For these owners, adoption means having to spend time and resources that they may not have to learn new skills. There is also the worry that these technologies will be expensive to implement,” said Low.

To help simplify the process of digitalization and remove barriers for SMEs, VTF will be organizing a DATA Asia 2021 virtual exhibition between May 24-30, 2021. DATA Asia virtual tech exhibition was curated to help SME owners discover the right digitalization tools for their business in an interactive virtual environment, instead of hearing pitches in silos.

“We have incorporated gamification technology, business matching tools, etc to make the experience more immersive and easy to participate even for those with little technology knowledge,” Jason said, adding that DATA Asia aims to accelerate the process of SME digitalization by bringing together digitalization enablers and matching them to SME owners based on their digital needs.

Barriers like lack of understanding and lack of funds will be removed, he said, given that DATA Asia has customised the user interface and experience to make it simple for SME owners to use and connect with digital ecosystems such as cloud computing, e-commerce and payment solution providers.

“At the expo, these SME owners will be able to learn about ways to get their digital transformation journey funded. They will also get the chance to mingle with industry leaders through keynote speaker sessions,” he said.

Jason also said that the expo had attracted a good mix of global and local corporations across industries.

“Organisations such as VISA, NetApp, Exabytes and Newpages have been championing digitalisation for many years and will lend their support towards local SME digitalisation through the event.

“Apart from private corporations, technology accelerator and early-stage venture capital firm 1337 Ventures is also participating in DATA Asia,” he said adding that online quarterly accelerator programs run by 1337 Ventures such as Alpha Startups Digital Accelerator (ASDA) had been quite successful in helping tech founders understand more about their customers, product and market which, in turn, help them achieve product-market-fit in a shorter duration.

With the participation of 1337 Ventures in DATA Asia, Jason hopes that Malaysian startup founders can benefit from the digital event.

On e-commerce adoption among SMEs, DATA Asia exhibition sponsor Exabytes said that their database had seen a 70% increase between March and December last year compared to the same period the year before.

Exabytes, which is one of the local digital enablers that qualifies SMEs for MDEC 50% matching grants for digital solutions costing up to RM10,000 now has over 160,000 SMEs in its database.

“The more popular packages that SMEs opted for were eCommerce Starter, an eCommerce website with the capacity of listing up to 1,000 products with 6 products pre-inserted during our setup. And for solutions, our Managed eCommerce Solution is the most sought-after. This solution includes the building of an eCommerce store, managing businesses’ eCommerce operations plus marketing activities, digital advertising, data analysis, and more.

“We believe that the demand surge for these packages were due to the shifts in shopping behavior among customers. Covid-19 has undoubtedly accelerated the transition to a more digital environment and sparked shifts in the eCommerce industry that are likely to have long-term consequences. Following the pandemic, more than half of the survey’s respondents now shop online more frequently and rely on the internet more, so it is a huge plus to the online retail industry. Ordering food, delivering things to others, buying clothes, and even stocking up on wet groceries are made online because people want to stay at home. SMEs who are now online retailers are doing their very best to retain their customers by ensuring a more comprehensive online store setup and appropriate marketing” said Exabytes CEO Chan Kee Siak.

Those interested in attending the virtual event can claim their complimentary tickets at https://data-asia.biz/. Tickets will be available on a first comes first-served basis

Robert Downey Jr executive produces epic post-apocalyptic adventure ‘Sweet Tooth’

After hanging up the mantle of Marvel’s Iron Man, actor Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey are serving as Executive Producers for the upcoming series Sweet Tooth, alongside Jim Mickle, Beth Schwartz, Amanda Burrell and Linda Moran.

Based on the DC Comic book series by Jeff Lemire, Sweet Tooth tells the story of The Great Crumble pandemic that wreaked havoc on the world a decade ago. It led to the mysterious emergence of hybrids – babies born part human, part animal.

In typical human fashion, these hybrids are hunted by humans out of fear.

After a decade of living safely in his secluded forest home, a sheltered hybrid deer-boy named Gus (Christian Convery) unexpectedly befriends a wandering loner named Jepperd (Nonso Anozie).

Together, the duo set out on an extraordinary adventure across what’s left of America in search of answers – about Gus’s origins, Jepperd’s past, and the true meaning of home. Their journey see them bumping into unexpected allies and enemies, and Gus quickly learns the lush, dangerous world outside the forest is more complex than he ever could have imagined.

Robert Downey Jr. got involved when he heard about the series and thought it sounded interesting. “We heard there was this great graphic novel series,” he said. “And it just had this incredible emotional breadth of the storytelling.”

The story of Sweet Tooth resonated with director Jim Mickle too. “I read Sweet Tooth when it first came out,” Mickle said. “I finished it and loved it. I think it was Jeff Lemire’s voice, and the way that he brings so much of himself.”

According to Collider, the tone of the adaptation will be bit lighter than the comic version. “We felt we could really hold on to the themes, but make it a more enjoyable place,” said Susan Downey.

“I just hope people have the experience that we get to have with our kids where we cuddle up on the couch and all watch it together.”

Before anyone get worked up about the slight changes, the comic author Lemire gave his blessings. “Some of the best parts of the show are some of the new characters,” Lemire said.

“To see something that you created in a sketchbook walking in front of you on a film set — it’s wonderful.”

Rounding up the cast are Adeel Akhtar (Dr. Aditya Singh), Aliza Vellani (Rani Singh), Stefania LaVie Owen (Bear), Dania Ramirez (Aimee Eden), Neil Sandilands (General Abbot), Will Forte (Father) and James Brolin (Narrator).

Sweet Tooth is set to premiere on Netflix on June 4.

The Drac Pack gets a shock in Hotel Transylvania: Transformania

Drac and the pack are back and so is the cunning Van Helsing! In the upcoming film Hotel Transylvania: Transformania, monsters (and a very human Johnny) gather at Drac’s fabulous hotel like they do every year.

While Johnny is always excited to be with his monster family, he’s sad because Drac still gives him the cold shoulder. Johnny is convinced the animosity from Drac is because he’s human and not a monster like them.

Things begin to look promising when Van Helsing proposes a solution. Unfortunately, Van Helsing’s Monsterfication Ray goes haywire and turns every monster at the hotel into human.

Every monster is horrified about the change except Mavis’s husband Johnny who’s turned into a scaly monster and loving it!

Drac, who’s now human and stripped of his powers, must work together with exuberant Johnny and race across the globe to find a cure before it’s too late and before they drive each other crazy.

Luckily, Mavis is on hand to give the hilariously human Drac Pack help and support while the gang once again is put on a hilarious mission to make sure the change doesn’t become permanent.

Hotel Transylvania: Transformania is scheduled to be shown in cinemas in August 2021. Have a little giggle by watching the trailer above.

Year 2020/2021 - 10 Life Lessons

Assalamualaikum....

Remember me? Hahaha Alhamdulillah... still well alive and living a quiet life as normal human and have been doing self-reflecting with lots of things.
I haven’t write anything to express what i feel for quite sometimes. Perhaps in 3-4 years maybe? I hardly remember.
Here it goes...

1. Family is everything. Certain family have a very close knit family bonding that I always envy throughout those beautiful pictures or not. Well... as the eldest, i hope it is not too late to make my family happy with my existence. I am trying my best, it might be slow progress but it will get there. Gonna be an uncle again for 2 little princesses! Yeay!
Marriage? Do not take over Allah’s job please....

2. Be happy, always be happy with own self. Do not rely your happiness on others. Seriously it will disappoint you big time. Learn to make yourself happy even when you are alone. Sometimes, small little things that you do in life will spark a joy or create a smile on your beautiful face.

3. Be kind, not necessarily be right. Right now at this age, if you ask me “1+1=5, i will say you are right!”. People are struggling every single day in life even they mask it with a simple smile on their face. Don’t be harsh. Do not ASSume, coz it will make you an ASS. Be kind.

4. Know when to stop and let go. Certain things are really not meant to be in life, do not force it. Sometimes holding on something that you already know that will not meant to be, it is just gonna break you more than you can imagine. Not worth it. Trust me, just let it go and move on. Life is a climb, but the views are totally great!

5. Best friends? Really? Close friends maybe... I do not know. How you define “best friend”? It is just a label anyway. The best ones will always stay close whenever they are. You know who you are. 😉

6. If it meant to be, it will be. Time is everything. Career, marriage, relationship, friendship, money etc are something that you cannot force it but instead you can work for it. However, if He said it is not meant for you this time maybe somewhere along the journey it will be yours. Just enjoy the moment.

7. Forgive people in silence. Make peace with yourself. Do not hold grudges. It will not make your life be at peace and move on. Forgive people but it must start with our own heart. Try it, you will feel something heavy has been lifted from your shoulders. You will start seeing things with fresh set of eyes and minds.

8. Admit mistake & seek help is not an embarrassment. There’s no need to always be right at all times even it is clearly wrong or there’s no need to always stay strong even we know we really need help. There’s should be no shame in seeking for help or admitting any mistake if it is good for you.

9. Stop saying sorry more than 3 times. Just walk away, it is a self-respect. Even you know it is not your fault, stop saying sorry just for the sake of holding on certain things that you think it is the right way to do it. Limit it to 3x and then walk away. Have a self respect.

10. Love, focus and always choose yourself. Invest yourself with good knowledge, treat/focus your body with good exercises, vibes, meals etc. At the end of the day, you will only need YOURSELF to stand up and carry on with your future. No one else. Except you and Du’a mak ayah.

During this difficult time, please take care of yourself. Always stay safe & healthy.

Until then... bye!
John...

Mothers make it work, always

What do mothers who earn five-figure salaries have in common with mothers who hustle to make ends meet every month?

A lot, especially when it comes to making life-changing adjustments for adopting a new role in their life.

“Prior to this my husband and I were focused on what we wanted to do when we wanted to do it and that’s it. After we became parents we became focused on what Sofia needs, what would be good for Sofia and how it would affect her before we think about our needs,” said Che Puan Sarimah Ibrahim, 43.

The Irish-Malay award-winning TV host and emcee who was appointed as Patron 2021 of the Mental Illness Awareness & Support Association (MIASA) said that motherhood had helped her discover her passion in mental health and shifted her career from entertainment to edutainment to improve mental health awareness and remove the stigma against mental health conditions.

Sarimah who gave birth to Tunku Sofia Najihah Tunku Nadzimuddin, 2, on 19 July 2019 said that although she had a background in psychology, she had never pursued it in any way and would never have if not for motherhood.

“I sort of put my career on hold when I was trying to get pregnant naturally. Put it on hold again for my entire pregnancy. Once I delivered Sofia, I took some time to heal physically, mentally, emotionally. Now, I am back to work now busy with a lot of digital emceeing and hosting talks online” she said adding that she had a bout of postpartum depression and took about six months to recover with the help of her very supportive husband Tunku Nadzimuddin Tunku Mudzaffar, a mental health professional, family, and friends.

Sarimah sees a 360 degrees change in lifestyle. Her calendar these days is filled with more family-focused activities, playdates, spending one on one time with Sofia and she even goes to bed with the soundtrack to the cartoon show Cocomelon in her head.

In terms of fashion style, she said that she feels she is a much more sporty kind of mum.

“It’s definitely comfort over the runway now. On an ordinary day, I am wearing black sports pants with a colorful shirt, as I aim to look casual but still try to look smart in outfits that are comfortable enough to keep up with Sofia and her needs,” she said.

For 43-year-old single mother Elzie Darwinna Alias, motherhood is about spending enough quality time and imparting life’s knowledge and skills on survival to her six children aged between 13 and 22 years.

She was a paralegal handling property transactions at a legal firm for 18 years prior to becoming a mother.

Having a full-time office job, Elzie used to make sure that she spends quality time with her children early in the morning and in the evenings.

“I would wake up at 5 am to prepare them breakfast so that we can all have breakfast together and then when they go to bed at night, I would make sure to read them bedtime stories. Naturally, I did not get much sleep myself as I have six children to tend to!” she said.

When she had her second child in 2000, she had no choice but to bring her children to work in order to keep them safe as she could not have afforded childcare.

Knowing that she would not be able to sustain a full-time job while being a mother and a father figure to her children, she turned to Selangor Asnaf Development Centre under Lembaga Zakat Selangor to learn business management and marketing skills in order to start a home bakery business, Danriench Bakery.

“Motherhood is a life-long commitment. You will never be able to stop wanting to give your best to your children and for me, it’s ensuring that they grow to become well-rounded human beings with not only formal and religious education but also enough skills to survive this world and the worlds after,” she said.

Meanwhile, for career-oriented Rachel Tan, 32, she believes that it is possible to have a well-balanced career that one enjoys while being a hands-on mother to her two children, Arissa, 2 years old, and Damien, 5 months old.

“Before becoming a mother, I was extremely career-focused. I was a marketing lead for a well-known e-commerce platform, which requires a lot of time and energy, and very often I would come home late or still be on my laptop even on weekends.

“My perspectives changed after I had my firstborn and I felt that motherhood is a lot more than just fulfilling the needs of your child. It is becoming a guide, a cheerleader, a friend, a fisherman, and anything that your child needs you to be,” she said, adding that there were times when she worried about her child while she was at work and missed certain developmental milestones.

Right before her son Damien was born, she found a way to integrate motherhood with her career through her new role as head of business for Malaysia’s fastest-growing e-commerce lifestyle brand Oxwhite which allows her the flexibility of working from home while caring for her children.

The brand’s commitment to comfort and quality also allows her to choose comfort over trend and wear more casual outfits while at work.

“Some days in between meetings, I would be making food for my children or changing diapers. Working at Oxwhite allows me to keep things flexible and minimalistic. I always rely on the basics like a plain top, leggings, comfortable pants and slip on a jacket or cardigan for important meetings,” she said.

In conjunction with Mother’s day, Oxwhite would like to treat 10 lucky mothers by giving away RM100 shopping vouchers worth a total of RM1000. To receive this special gift for any Oxwhite purchases, do share with us your favourite mom moments in the comment section at this LINK.

To our dearest mum!

This article was first published in theSun Buzz Mother’s Day edition HERE

The pandemic may have kept some families apart but Buzz readers didn’t let distance stop them from wishing their mothers a very Happy Mother’s Day for all she does for the family.

Tho

Dear Mummy,

My most memorable memory with you was the day I was admitted to the hospital due to breathing difficulties in the middle of night. To be exact, I am a bronchitis patient. The doctor advised me not to take sweet and cold food because it’ll cause phlegm and will get stuck in the breathing tube.

That night was really killing me. I was sent to Sunway Hospital by my sister and you. Nurses checked on me and said I should’ve been admitted earlier as my oxygen level was very low.

She gave me the oxygen inhaler and then admitted me immediately for health and safety reasons.

It was my first time being admitted. The feeling of fear and butterflies in my stomach made me want to cry ... I didn’t want to and never dared to stay in the hospital because I always read of horror stories in such a place.

When the visiting hours were over, the nurses asked you to leave, you tried so hard to convince them to let you stay in the ward with me.

The kind nurses there accommodated you that first night. You slept on the chair beside my bed for the whole night. I could not imagine how uncomfortable it was to sleep while sitting, without a proper bed and pillow.

Somehow the medicine I took made me weak and dizzy. Whenever I moved or rolled over on bed, you would be awake to ask me if I wanted water or food. I couldn’t hold back my tears and felt so thankful to have you in my life.

I love you mum! You’re the reason why I’m still surviving even though I have gone through ups and downs.

Your daughter, Tho.

Justine

Mummy, thank you for all the things that you have done for me. Your love, devotion and sacrifice has made me into the person I am today. Even in times of hardship, you are the one I turn to. I love and miss you dearly. Happy Mother’s Day!

Kitto (Kishore)

Happy Mother’s Day, mommy! I love you so much and I miss you more than ever. Although I couldn’t come home this year, I hope that my wishes can make your day better. Love you always mommy.

Evelyn & Leonard

Mummy, you have spent most of your life prioritising us and helping us chase our dreams. Your only wish is for us to be happy and healthy. We will make it up to you by loving you till the end of time. We would like to wish you a Happy Mother’s Day!

Billie

She is beautiful, softened at the edges and tempered with a spine of steel. I want to grow old and be like her. To my mom and all the mothers in the world, happy Mother’s Day!!

Adrian Leong

Ma, you gave me the best in everything you could ever give to me. My only gift to you, your lovely granddaughter that you never met. I love you ma. Happy Mother’s Day!

Benjamin

Dear Mom, Growing up, I am always thankful to you for giving us such a wonderful life even when times were tough. You have always set an example of a Godly, righteous woman for me to look up to.

Thank you for being my anchor when the waves come crashing down. Happy Mother’s Day.

Sarah Heng

Dear Mum,

You are my anchor and my strength. You are a reflection of grace and unconditional love. Thank you for your selflessness and toils. Thank you for always being present to comfort us and to assure us that all will be well. Happy Mother’s Day!

Mei Yu

Dearest Mama,

Thank you for always being there.

Thank you for teaching and guiding us.

Thank you for your selflessness and unconditional love.

You are the best and always will be greatest mom in the world. Happy Mother’s Day, Ma!

Love, Your children

Vincent & Vivian

To the iron lady in our lives, your strength, kindness, compassion and above all, your love, are our sources of inspiration to grow into the people that we’ve become. Thank you for raising us single-handedly.

Your three angels

It’s not the easiest task to be a mum, our mum, but thank you for trying your best to be the best!

8 questions with Douglas Lim

This article was first published in theSun Buzz edition HERE

It has been a while since BUZZ last did an 8-Question interview, so we’ve decided to bring things back with local funnyman Douglas Lim.

The last time we saw him perform was during the last leg of the Malaysian Association of Chinese Comedians (MACC) Goodbye Tour in November 2019 with fellow comedians Kuah Jenhan, Dr Jason Leong and Phoon Chi Ho.

Lim’s latest comedy production, aptly named I’ve Missed You, which was to take place over the weekend, sadly had to be cut short due to the sudden announcement of MCO 3.0 earlier this week.

In this interview conducted prior to the announcement, Lim updates us on what he has been doing over the past year.

1. First up, you’ve been really active on your Youtube channel during the MCO. Can you tell us a bit about that?

“The MCO 1.0 basically shut down the live entertainment industry. So usually when I think up funny things, they go into a live.

“With no live shows, I figured I might as well so short clips and upload them. I get to indulge in my love of comedy creation/ performance and people get some free entertainment.”

2. Tell us a little bit about your fitness journey ... what motivated you to start and what was the toughest change you had to make?

“First of all, I need to clarify. My fitness journey is really not properly done. I have put zero effort in eating healthy. In fact, the reason I exercise is to try and shed the calories that I constantly put into my body due to greediness. I was a state and junior national athlete during my school days. Once I started working, I stopped exercising and became really unfit.

“Then in 2015, my wife and I decided to go to Machu Pichu for a holiday and friends who had gone before advised us that the trek can be quite demanding. So, we decided to head back into the gym as we wanted to enjoy the holiday.

“Then after the trip, I started running and now I basically run, gym and play some badminton (badly).”

3. Tell us about your show, I’ve Missed You. What inspired you to organise it?

“Harith asked if I would like to do some shows and the last LIVE IN PERSON stand-up show I did was in September last year. That’s a long time. So I told Harith that I’d love to do some shows and he made it happen.”

4. What can we expect during the show? Will we be treated to one of your famous singalongs?

“I have a mixture of some new stuff and some old material. I think it’s quite obvious that we’re going through some strange times now and I have my opinions about them (so does everyone, actually).

“As for the songs, yeah, I’m thinking of doing the 2020 year in review that I performed as Yuni on my social media platforms.”

5. Speaking about your shows, has there ever been a time where someone in the audience made you laugh?

“I’m sure there must have been but I can’t remember a specific occasion. I think this is mainly because I’m a set list comedian and not a banter/playing the room type of comic.

“I usually prepare and practice exactly what I’m going to say and do and then go on stage and perform. So I don’t give audiences a chance to verbally engage with me.”

6. Many of us last saw you during the MACC farewell show. With all that’s happened in the country since, have you considered restarting the project?

“The MACC decided to do a farewell show mainly because our individual schedules were becoming too difficult to synchronise.

“Everyone has got their own projects so we’re taking time to work on our individual pursuits for now. I don’t see an MACC show happening anytime soon. Sorry ah ...”

7. What are your thoughts about the future of the entertainment scene in Malaysia, especially for comedy?

“I think we need to properly handle the pandemic first. The fact is, LIVE IN PERSON entertainment can only be fully enjoyed if there is no threat of death (hahahaha). Doing live entertainment while adhering to SOPs is also quite difficult.”

“Stand up comedy in particular needs a live audience for the laughter. If not, it just becomes talk. Just one person talking and giving opinions. The problem now is, that laughter is quite an effective way to SPREAD the virus.

“So, we need to tackle the pandemic first before anything can be done about the comedy industry, in my opinion.”

8. Who do you think is the next rising star in stand-up comedy?

“I can’t be sure mainly because there have been no consistent live stand-up comedy shows for one and a half years now. But I think Mad Sabah has incredible comedy instinct and an amiable personality which endears him to the audience. I’ve been hearing many good things about Riezman. Also, Hannan Azlan. Her material may not be for everybody but those who like it really do.”
