Fate: The Winx Saga is returning for Season 2 despite rocky start

Netflix’s live adaptation of the beloved Winx Club comic got off on a rocky start but was received well enough from viewers to get a second season.

Fate: The Winx Saga season 2 is set to begin filming eight brand-new hourlong episodes in Ireland later this year.

“The six episodes in season one only scratched the surface of this incredibly rich world and the powerful fairies who inhabit it. As Bloom’s story continues to evolve, I can’t wait for you to learn even more about Aisha, Stella, Terra, and Musa! And you never know who might show up at Alfea next term,” said showrunner Brian Young.

Just like the live adaptation of Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Fate: The Winx Saga was given a grittier treatment and made some changes in the character lineup.

In the original Italian comic, Winx Club centers around six girls named Bloom, Stella, Musa, Tecna, Aisha and Flora. In the live adaptation, only five girls appeared as the main cast: Bloom, Stella, Musa, Terra and Aisha. Tecna does not make an appearance and Flora is mentioned in passing as Terra’s cousin.

The first season was also criticised for whitewashing Musa, an East Asian character in the comics, who is played by Elisha Applebaum in the show. Flora, a Latina comic character, was seemingly replaced by a new character named Terra.

Actress Abigail Cowen who plays the titular character Bloom addressed the casting backlash in an interview with The Wrap.

“If we are lucky enough to get a second season, I think Flora would be brought in and I would definitely welcome that. I’m not a part of the casting process, but I do think, if the series does go to a second season, I think hopefully these concerns are something that can be addressed, because I do think diversity both in front of and behind the camera is vital and much-needed throughout the industry and internationally. So I think it’s important that we are having these conversations.”

Enjoy Massimo bread with a peace of mind thanks to tamper-evident seal

The Covid-19 pandemic has understandably made many extra cautious about the hygiene of the items they buy. One of the worries is that pranksters or irresponsible people may have accidentally or purposely damaged those soft, fluffy loaves on the shelves.

Bread bags in Malaysia have traditionally been secured by Kwik Lock bread tags that can be opened and closed, undetected, making bread an easy target for pranks and malicious attacks.

Which brings up the question: How can you be certain that the bread in your cart has not been tampered with?

Fortunately, Massimo’s new tamper-evident bread bag packaging which is sealed for your safety will be rolled out across all Massimo bread loaves, beginning today.

All customers have to do is to check the seal on the bread packaging to ensure that it has not been tampered with. The laser-sealed tamper-evident packaging allows everyone to enjoy your favourite bread with a peace-of-mind.

Here’s how to check:

Step 1: Look for the #SealedForSafety Massimo sandwich loaf on the bread rack.

Step 2: #CheckTheSeal is intact. If the seal is not intact please pick another Massimo loaf to avoid accidental or malicious contamination.

Step 3: Purchase with confidence, and enjoy with a peace-of-mind.

Step 4: To open, break the seal; to close, twist the packaging and attach the Kwik Lock bread tag.

The Italian Baker Sdn Bhd, the makers of Massimo, invested RM1million in the laser-seal tamper-evident packaging technology from the United States of America to keep its products sealed for safety for you. The tamper-evident packaging helps to alert you to any visible alterations to the product.

The Italian Baker Sdn Bhd, Managing Director, Mr Jeremy Goon explained that the tamper-evident packaging further uplifts product integrity, food safety and quality assurance for your safety and satisfaction.

“Towards the end of 2019 a social media challenge in the United States of America had pranksters opening food products and deliberately contaminating them via grossly unhygienic behaviors before carefully placing the contaminated products back for unwitting consumers to buy,” Mr. Goon explained.

“The risk of such pranks, and its possible effects on consumers especially during the Covid-19 pandemic required us to increase product safety and integrity. We quickly found a solution to safeguard our customers but with global lockdown restriction, it has taken us a longer time to implement.”

“In Malaysia, only Massimo has tamper-evident bread loaf packaging because your safety and satisfaction is our priority. Your peace-of-mind as you enjoy the wholesome goodness of our products, confident in its safety is important because Massimo cares,” he said.

Mr Goon shared that the laser seal tamper-evident technology was specifically designed to make any tampering clearly visible.

“Massimo is a consumer-centric organization that always considers safety, practicality and functionality of our packaging. The laser-seal packaging we use is easy for legitimate users to open while clearly showing any attempts to break the seal by non-users. Always remember to check the seal for your safety and for your peace-of-mind,” he added.

About Massimo

Since its introduction in 2011, Massimo has become a Malaysian staple, providing wholesome goodness through a variety of bread including Sandwich Loaf, Sandwich Loaf with Wheat Germ, 100% Whole Wheat Loaf, Fine Wholemeal, Ricco Chocolato Loaf, and Kurma & Milk loaf.

Massimo breads are baked using quality ingredients under stringent quality assurance to delight consumers with its deliciously healthy taste, and to give them peace-of-mind with its tamper-evident packaging.

The popular Massimo Sandwich Loaf with Wheat Germ is infused with the natural goodness of wheat germ that is associated with better heart health. Wheat germ is high in vitamin E, Omega-3 fatty acids, natural fibre, protein, B1, B2, B6, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc.

The whole wheat and fine wholemeal ranges are packed with the nutritional goodness of fibre, essential nutrients and minerals, with the soft and fluffy texture, Malaysians love.

Setting up your travel fund

This article first appeared in theSun Buzz edition HERE

The Covid-19 pandemic certainly has derailed all of our travel plans last year and the coming year. While we may not be certain when it’s safe to travel again, we can set up a travel fund to be used in the future.

With the Chinese New Year celebrations coming up, some of the ang pau money can be channelled into your travel fund.

Here are a few things to think about while setting up your travel fund:

Decide how much to contribute

If you’re setting up a travel fund with your loved one, it’s important to set a goal and decide how much each person can contribute. It’s important to take stock of other financial responsibilities and daily expenditures too. Contribution to the joint travel fund can be in equal amount for each person or the person who earns more contributes more. Decide what works for everyone.

Have a dedicated savings account

To make saving money easier, you should create dedicated savings accounts for this purpose. You may also want to forego getting an ATM card for this account which will make it harder to access your savings should the temptation strike. Saving money takes discipline and dedication. As such, an app which can help automate your savings is definitely helpful!

Pick out a few dream travel destinations

It’s helpful to pick out a few travel destinations and research each place so you know approximately how much money you need to holiday comfortable. Some exotic and far-flung places can cost a bomb or it can be dirt cheap. Also, take note of whether there are free-entry attractions at your dream travel destinations. It will help cut down a lot of spending!

Make lifestyle changes

It’s time to be honest with yourself and assess how you spend your money on a daily basis. With easy access to online shopping while in lockdown, the desire to treat ourselves is hard to avoid. To ensure saving for your travel fund is a success, it’s time to find out which spending habit to cut so you can save and channel more money into your savings.

Start a side hustle

Most of us have an idea of a side hustle but have never gotten round to execute it. Now it is time to start your side hustle to earn some income. Alternatively, you can subsist on some freelance work or work part-time online for some extra cash.

Check your travel points and credit card miles

Don’t forget to check the travel miles you’ve accumulated via credit card or memberships. If you’ve saved enough points, you may be able to shave off some travel expenses too when the time comes. These points can be used to redeem free hotel stays, complimentary room upgrades, free flights or extending another night at the hotel for free.

Simone Ashley lands Bridgerton Season 2 lead role with meaningful surname

Dear members of the ton, actress Simone Ashley will be joining the cast of Bridgerton in Season 2!

Simone Ashley will be playing the character named Kate Sharma (known as Kate Sheffield in the books) who is Anthony’s love interest too.

Bridgerton Season 2 will be based on Book Two of the series, The Viscount Who Loved Me, which revolves around the elusive bachelor Anthony (the eldest Bridgerton) in his search for true love.

Fans who have read the books will know that Kate brought Anthony lots of joy and love in his life.

This makes the revelation of the meaning of the character’s new surname even more meaningful.

According to a tweet by @beylioness, the name Sharma in Brahmin Hindu means joyfulness and comfort. It’s a beautiful surname for the character who will change Anthony’s life and bring him much comfort.

Also, casting Simone Ashley as Kate Sharma is a huge representation for Desi and Southeast Asian people alike.

For those who have an issue with the name change, many fans have pointed out that Kate’s character is more than a name and the original surname (Sheffield) holds zero significance in the books. The name change is not only beautiful but doesn’t affect the storyline at all.

Nevertheless, this amazing news makes Bridgerton Season 2 ever more exciting. Can’t wait to see Simone Ashley don the beautiful costumes.

Academy Award winner Emma Stone brings punk rock Cruella to life

“This vampire bat

This inhuman beast

She ought to be locked up

And never released

The world was such

A wholesome place until

Cruella, Cruella De Vil!”

Good news for fans of the villain, Cruella De Vil!

Academy Award winner Emma Stone (“La La Land) is bringing Disney’s Cruella to life in an all-new live-action film about the rebellious days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains.

Cruella is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution and the story follows a young grafter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs.

She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets.

One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”).

But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.

Styling the character Cruella is two-time Oscar-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan (“Mad Max: Fury Road,” “A Room with a View”). As teased in the trailer, fans get to see dazzling and imaginative costumes donned by Cruella herself throughout the whole film.

Disney’s Cruella is directed by Craig Gillespie (“I Tonya”) from a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, story by Aline Brosh McKenna and Kelly Marcel & Steve Zissis. It was produced by Andrew Gunn (“Freaky Friday”), Marc Platt (“Mary Poppins Returns”) and Kristin Burr (“Christopher Robin”), with Emma Stone, Michelle Wright, Jared LeBoff and Glenn Close serving as executive producers.

The film will be released on May 27, 2021.

Critically acclaimed American horror drama series Monsterland makes its debut in Asia on February 17 on FX channel. Based on Nathan Ballingrud’s novel North American Lake Monsters: Stories, Monsterland tells eight different stories about people dealing with loss, regret, guilt, and loneliness.

Dubbed as “an absolute must watch for horror fans” by Forbes, the engaging and provocative eight-part series explores the monsters within and among us.

Each episode features a different present-day American city, with a new protagonist grappling with monsters -- some that present as Gothic beasts, others more closely resembling a version of themselves, or the darkness within them. Grounded in reality, it explores the dark, unique, and at times starkly conflicting realities that can exist inside one person.

Executive producer Mary Laws (Preacher, Succession) teams up with Under the Shadow creators, renowned composer Gustavo Santaolalla, and emerging auteur directors to bring the series to life.

Viewers will recognise familiar faces from popular television and blockbuster movie roles, such as, Orange is the New Black (Taylor Schilling), Westworld (Jonathan Tucker), Star Wars (Kelly Marie Tran), Joker (Bill Camp), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Unbelievable (Kaitlyn Dever) star in Monsterland taking on nuanced, rich roles.

Animated short ‘Us Again’ to debut in cinemas with ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’

Us Again is a vibrant and original new theatrical animated short film from director Zach Parrish that is set to debut exclusively in cinemas worldwide beginning on March 5, in front of Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon.

Set in a vibrant city pulsating with rhythm and movement, an elderly man and his young-at-heart wife rekindle their youthful passion for life and each other on one magical night.

The years fade away as the joy of dancing propels them across the exciting cityscape of their youth and revives fond memories and ambitions. Us Again is told entirely without dialogue and set to an original funk and soul musical score reminiscent of the mid-60s.

Who are the people behind Us Again?

Parrish is an eleven-year veteran of Disney Animation who served as head of animation on Big Hero 6 and director of the Short Circuit film, Puddles.

Award-winning choreographers/dancers Keone and Mari (featured performers on “World of Dance,” and renowned for their collaborations with such top talents as Justin Bieber and Billie Eilish), and acclaimed composer Pinar Toprak (“Captain Marvel”) brought their unique talents to this experimental and musical fantasy.

The film is produced by Brad Simonsen (associate producer on “Big Hero 6,” “Zootopia” and “Ralph Breaks the Internet”), and executive produced by Jennifer Lee, chief creative officer for Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS).

“Working with Keone and Mari was the key to making this film work,” recalls Parrish. “From the very beginning, I knew that I wanted this film to be music driven. And I felt that dance is a universal language that can translate into any culture. I loved that their dance style felt like it was made for animation, and that there was this genuine, honest and organic connection between them because they were actually a married couple in real life.”

“The story itself was inspired by my own grandparents, who faced getting older in different ways, along with my own physical limitations in playing sports resulting from getting older and injuries. I started thinking about how someone might look at the world differently as things change and they grow older.”

Simonsen adds, “It was fascinating to see the process and the close collaboration between the music, the choreography and Zach’s vision for layout and animation. The film has a timeless and life-affirming message and an emotional resonance that is uniquely entertaining. Zach’s love of dance and animation, and his willingness to take chances as a filmmaker, made this a true labor of love.”

Keone observes, “Mari and I have always dreamed of having our particular style of movement being incorporated within animation. Our style is very new and young and we were like kids in a candy store working with Zach and the team to capture it and see our movements realized through the characters in the film.”

“From the first time we saw the storyboards, I was already tearing up,” adds Mari. “The characters were easy to relate to and to empathize with. As a married couple, we tried to imagine being their age, and we also thought about our own grandparents in bringing the characters to life through dance.”

Us Again will premiere on Disney+ in June.

Carry on the CNY spirit with Snapchat’s festive Bitmoji and Lenses

In life before the pandemic, we used to host large reunion dinners and visit relatives’ homes. This year, many of us will be celebrating a more subdued Chinese New Year due to the Movement Control Order restrictions and protocols. However, this annual festivity does not need to be cancelled - it can still go on albeit through a different experience.

Staying safe is our priority this year. So, even without being physically present, we can still celebrate this festive season virtually in a unique way on Snapchat.

1. Wear a mask, but make it fashion

The first step of staying safe is always wearing your mask correctly. Send a Bitmoji with a festive-themed mask to remind your loved ones to always wear a mask wherever they go.

2. E-angpows are the new norm

Just because we can’t do house visits, doesn’t mean the tradition of giving and receiving angpows stop! These days, various banks and e-wallet providers offer e-angpow services. Drop your loved ones a subtle - not really - hint with your personalized Bitmoji, just like this!

3. Virtual decorations are equally important

Keep the CNY spirit high up with more festive decorations, like lanterns and peach blossom flowers. You don’t have to do it only at your home, you can also ‘show’ them to your friends through your Bitmoji.

4. Video Calls with a Fun Twist

Virtual gathering is the next best thing if you are not able to celebrate with family in person. While it might be hard to show off your new clothes in a full-body shot through the camera, why not make yourself stand out in another way among your cousins or delight your nieces and nephews? Snap Camera can be your best buddy in this!

5. Send you greeting with Snapchat Lenses

We usually send our Chinese New Year greetings and wishes to our loved ones when the clock strikes twelve. This year, why not send unique and personalized ones with the help of fun and creative lenses from Snapchat?

Besides that, on the 15th day of the Lunar new year, some people toss Mandarin oranges into ponds and lakes, hoping to find a perfect match for themselves. This might not be able to take place in person this year, but don’t worry, you can still go on to Snapchat to try out this exclusive Chap Goh Mei lens to send your warmest greetings to your loved ones or your crush. Perhaps you may hit the jackpot from here?

6. Get Out of a Funk with Headspace

If you are feeling a bit down this Chinese New Year due to the pandemic, try out this 4-minute mini meditation on Headspace Mini on Snapchat, titled “Get Out of a Funk”.

You can access the Mini in chat on the Snapchat app by clicking on the rocket icon at the bottom of the screen, which initiates the Headspace session within Snapchat. The people you’re chatting with can also join in.

Regardless of how you’re celebrating Chinese New Year this year, most importantly, let’s continue to adhere to the SOPs and stay safe and sound throughout this Chinese New Year celebration.

Oxpicious decor for Chinese New Year

This article first appeared in theSun Buzz CNY x Valentine’s Day edition HERE

The Lunar New Year celebrations this year may be a little quieter. However, we can still embrace the festivities by decorating the home even just a little. With these minimalistic and simple decor ideas, preparing for the festive week will be fun, laidback and enjoyable.

Lucky Wishes on the door

Start the celebrations on a festive note with lucky wishes on the door. The IKEA SOLGLIMTAR is made out of thick, durable paper and it’s easy to put up with double-sided tape that’s included. When translated, the lucky decor wishes everyone who comes in good health, wealth and prosperity.

Good Fortune stickers

For a minimalistic approach, putting up these Good Fortune (Fuk) stickers add to the festive atmosphere without much fuss. Check out the Good Fortune stickers from MR DIY with its creative designs featuring cute Oxes.

Flower ball

If putting up the Good Fortune stickers feels a little plain, these flower balls with Good Fortune written all over it might do the trick to liven up the house. The flower balls can be a lantern substitute too and look great both indoors and outdoors.

Lanterns

Lanterns are another staple Chinese New Year decor and it can be either bought or made together with the children. Families with young children can easily turn lantern-making into a family art project to keep children occupied. All you need are the basic arts and crafts supplies such as coloured paper, scissors, threads and some glue.

Lucky bamboo

Even plants aren’t spared from being decorated during this festive season. The lucky bamboo plant is another popular decor and can also double as a gift. These small bamboo plants are arranged neatly in a shallow pot and some variants are twisted into beautiful shapes.

Pussy willow tree

One other popular plant in Chinese households during the CNY celebration is the pussy willow tree. The pussy willow tree is easily recognizable due to its white-grey furry buds which are sometimes dyed red, orange, yellow or fuchsia. The tree symbolizes growth and the coming of prosperity in Chinese culture.

Lucky plants

Other than the pussy willow tree, there are other lucky plants according to the Chinese culture too. Plants such as the jade plant, money plant, Dancing Ladies orchids, Kalanchoes, tangerine or kumquat trees bring in much festive joy, luck and abundance into the home.

Tree ornaments

The pussy willow tree is usually decorated with adorable CNY ornaments. If families ever need more ideas to keep children occupied, they can have the children make their own CNY ornaments to hang it on the tree.

Otherwise, store-bought ornaments are good too with designs such as the ox, lucky cat, gold ingot and the lion dance head to choose from.

Ang pau fish

Making ang pau fishes is another favourite activity among young children. This activity is also an opportunity to reuse or finish up old ang pau packets for decorative purposes.

Hanging up ang pau fishes as ornaments symbolizes a play on the words ‘Nian nian you yu’ (年年有余) which means wishing everyone else an abundance and surplus every year.

DIY firecrackers

Another festive DIY project to do is to make DIY firecrackers (just for decorative purposes). This can be easily made using painted toilet or kitchen rolls, or just rolled up red colour papers. The DIY firecrackers can be hung at the entrance to frame the Lucky Wishes or hung inside to frame the Good Fortune sticker.

It’s a comprehensive book about the Chinese Peranakan culture and identity in Melaka, Malaysia which will also tickle the fancy of any history buffs you know.

For plant lovers...

Plant lovers will openly welcome a gift of any potted plant. Since it’s Chinese New Year, you can gift them a pot of lucky bamboo. The lucky bamboos are thought to increase good feng shui, prosperity and all-round good wishes for the household. These lucky bamboo plants are also often arranged into beautiful, twisty shapes and make good home décor.

For the elderly...

Bird’s nest is believed to help boost the immune system, maintain a youthful complexion and help speed up recovery from illnesses. All of these health benefits combined make bird’s nest a good gift to give to the elderly. Bird’s nest is also easy for the elderly to consume and digest.

For all ages...

A box of mandarin oranges is a delicious and refreshing way to up our intake of vitamin C to boost our immune system. Gifting someone a box of mandarin oranges is also a way to wish someone prosperity and happiness.

For the whole family to share...

These days ordering desserts such as cakes can be easily done online. Get the family a delicious dessert to enjoy together after sitting down for a good reunion dinner. Sitting down to enjoy food as a family is an enjoyable way to bond and spend time with family members.

VALENTINE’S DAY GIFTS

While many couples do not celebrate Valentine’s Day, there’s still no harm with surprising each other with a gift. In order to move away from the superficial connotations of Valentine’s Day, get your loved one a gift that’s functional or something that both of you get to enjoy together. Here is a list of gifts you can gift this year!

Watches

Gifting each other a watch, whether it’s identical or not, is a great way to celebrate the time you have spent together today and forevermore. A watch is also a fashionable accessory that you can wear daily and might even help spruce up your look. If regular dress watches aren’t what they’re into, getting them a smartwatch is much more versatile due to its in-built many functions such as fitness tracking apps.

Upgraded smartphone

Upgrading the smartphone of your loved one comes with several benefits. Couples with smartphones that are equipped with better cameras can take high-quality pictures of their time together. Taking lots of pictures help create and immortalise the good memories made together.

Bouquet of flowers

Start the day right by surprising your loved ones with a bouquet of flowers. With the availability of flower delivery services, surprising loved ones with a special bouquet is made even easier. Just head to a flower delivery website to order a bouquet and have it delivered right to your doorstep. You can even have it delivered to their workplace.

Wireless earbuds

For the music lover in your life, it’s time to get them wireless earbuds. With wireless earbuds, they’ll be free from the mess and tangles of earphone wires or the need to lug a bulky headphone around.

Perfume

They may be eyeing a perfume they want to get for some time now and it’s time to make your move if they haven’t got it for themselves. Instead of getting tied down to one scent, getting them a set of mini fragrances is a fun option too because it provides the freedom to change up the scents as they wish.

Pampering kit

A self-pampering kit can contain several items such as bath essentials, home spa products or facial products. If you can’t find a curated set, you can easily create and package your own as a Valentine’s Day gift to your partner. A gift set that’s uniquely curated by you will definitely be much more appreciated for a long time.

Jewellery and accessories

Both men and women love jewellery and accessories. However, getting these items as gifts can be tricky as well. To be safe, get them a piece of jewellery or an accessory that can help enhance their outfits.

Makeup

The ladies will love receiving makeup products as gifts. Gifting makeup products is already a bonus because it’s always packaged nicely and it’ll be something they’ll use for a long time. Keep a lookout for the limited edition releases of their favourite products as well.

Grooming kit

Men want to look good and pamper themselves too. Get them a grooming kit to help them maintain their beards so they can look good for themselves and you.

Nail wraps

With nail salons closed again due to the Movement Control Order, getting gel nails done and getting it removed is going to be a chore or damaging to the nails. Get them a few packets of nail wraps so that they’ll still have gorgeous nails even in lockdown.

New normal, but MagnumCares is still doing its part for the community

2020 has been a tough year for everyone in Malaysia as we first experienced Movement Control Order and started practicing social distancing due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Despite this, MagnumCares continued to engage with the communities by providing different forms of assistance to ensure the communities receive the help that they need to endure throughout this pandemic.

This pandemic has impacted many lives especially the underprivileged communities as their incomes, food necessities and health assistance continue to decline. MagnumCares responded promptly to assist and even worked hand-in-hand with several non-profit organizations to help more than 27,000 people from different groups of underserved communities and more than 5,000 students nationwide.

This MagnumCares spirit of caring for the Community never faltered and in line with our MagnumCares’ tagline, ‘For you, with you’, in 2020, we helped different communities by providing financial aid to support single Moms to sew 4,000 PPEs for the front-liners, donated health equipment (ventilators) to hospitals, donated to NGO centres to be better equipped and able to self-sustain their own livelihood, provided financial aid to students in need as well as we helped the Orang Asli villages to install basic lighting in their homes.

Magnum Group has contributed more than RM2.5million in 2020 helping the community to lessen their burden during the Covid-19 situation.

This year, following the implementation of Movement Control Order 2.0 (MCO 2.0) in the Peninsula states, this upcoming Lunar New Year is going to be a “stay-at-home” new year. However, this is not stopping MagnumCares from continuing to spread festive cheers to more than 13,500 residents in 230 charitable homes nationwide under the new normal practices.

“We will be distributing face masks, food necessities and provide financial assistance to them.” Ms Beh Swan Swan, Head of Magnum Group CSR said,

“Despite the many challenges faced by everyone in Malaysia, wherever Magnum can, Magnum will continue to render help and reach out to those underserved members of the Community. We understand the tough challenges that everyone is facing and we will always try to find new and effective solutions to help them endure and ride over this tough period. Do check on your family, friends, and neighbors who are alone during this festive period and extend your greetings to help cheer them on”.

Magnum wishes everyone a Happy and Safe Chinese New Year to all Malaysians. “Let’s stay home and safely usher in the year of the Metal Ox. Remember “Nobody can do everything, but everybody can do something.”

Listen to Alena Murang’s newest song about missing home, Meno’

Sape’ songstress Alena Murang releases a new single and music video Meno’, a nostalgic lament of home, missing the longhouse and the people.

Alena, a descendant of the Dayak Kelabit people of the Baram river in Sarawak, recalls the days of the past when her ancestors used to make long journeys from the highlands to the coast of Miri to trade.

They went by long boat through the rapids, and up through the dense jungle, sleeping at villages or in the jungle on the way. It was at times like these they would sing “belian meno’ ” (wistful songs), a type of graceful song of yearning Meno’, in Kenyah language, is an emotion of yearning, thinking of something or someone that is not there.

The Kenyah language, spoken in Sarawak and Kalimantan, is of the Austronesian language

group and listed as an endangered language.

“In the recent years I’ve been travelling internationally a lot, and I would always sing this song on stage, also thinking about how much I missed home at the time”, explains Alena, who has played at festivals like South by Southwest USA, Førde Traditional and World Music Festival (Norway) and OzAsia Festival (Australia).

“I’m now based in KL, and in the past year the inability to return home especially to the

kampung has had a greater impact on me than I would’ve thought,” shares Alena.

“I balik kampung at least twice a year to see the family, to reconnect with the land, to do research, and it really grounds me. I really miss it and I can’t wait to go back, but for now we have to keep everybody, especially the interior areas, safe from the virus.”

How the music was made

The music video, edited by Sabah-based Kelabit filmmaker Candy Yik, uses snippets of video from the road and rivers of the villages in the interiors of Sarawak along the ulu Baram river.

On recording and producing during Covid times, Alena comments that it is a challenge but not impossible - “it just slows down the process alot”. Meno’ is the second single released in anticipation of her new album. The album recordings are supported by Kementerian Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia as part of the Roads To Our Heritage project, and the Dayak Cultural Foundation.

“In the midst of Sarawak’s development we see that the modern Dayak identity is strong

through projects such as this music production by Alena Murang,” shared Libat Langub, the Secretary to the Board of Trustees the of Dayak Cultural Foundation.

“We are proud of Alena and her team for their dedication in upholding the culture of Kenyah and Kelabit people through music and language. We hope that other young people will be inspired to similarly create, to learn and share the wealth of knowledge and beauty that lie in the many languages and cultures we have here.”

Roads To Our Heritage (RTOH) is a music project collaboration by three (3) local Malaysian bands - Alena Murang, Estranged and Stonebay to produce an album each as well as a six (6) episode documentary series featuring East Malaysian music heritage.

The project is supported by the Kementerian Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia (KKMM) and funded under the Ministry’s 2020 Digital Content Fund (DKD) for the creative industry.

Through this documentary series, the three (3) bands together with music researcher Dr Nadia Widyawati Madzhi of UiTM Music Faculty aim to reach out and tell the stories of the natives of Sabah and Sarawak, specifically the traditional music craftsmen.

By sharing these stories told by the native heritage caretakers, they hope that this could generate interest as well as be a part of the preservation efforts on East Malaysian culture and shared across all ages, both locally and internationally.

Every day is Valentine’s Day

This article first appeared in theSun Buzz CNY x Valentine’s Day edition HERE

Whether you take part in Valentine’s Day celebrations or not, what’s important is to appreciate and love your partner every day. Just like our readers have shared, it’s the little things that count at the end of the day and not the grand displays of affection!

1. Christabel

What’s something meaningful you or your partner has done?

It’s often the little things that count, and my husband shows his affections in various ways. I live in the UK so it’s often cold but he will warm the bed up before bedtime for me.

In the mornings, he will bring tea for when I wake up.

A Message to My Loved One

I hope we live long, stay happy and healthy. Don’t forget to celebrate the small stuff.

What’s something meaningful you or your partner has done?

After a full day of training, we decided to head over to a restaurant for dinner. Unfortunately, we had a tyre puncture on the way but managed to pull over at a petrol station.

Rain started to pour while he was changing the tyres so I held up an umbrella over us and found our situation quite comical. It was only later that I realised that was also the day he actually wanted to ask me out but the plan was ruined.

We had to change plans and ended up at a shopping mall instead. I appreciated that he never once lost his temper although he was hangry. The trying day didn’t end because we were stuck in the mall’s carpark for a good 30 minutes or more because everyone was leaving at the same time. He still kept his cool! This happened a few years ago and we’re getting married in a few months.

What’s something meaningful you or your partner has done?

My favourite Valentine’s Day was my first one with my hubby 4 years ago before we got married. I made some chocolate-covered almonds as Valentine’s Day gift and prepared a nice dinner. My husband gave me a bunch of pink roses!

A Message to My Loved One

Happy Valentine’s Day to the best husband ever! You are the only one that I want to share Valentine’s Day with forever. I love you!

4. Samantha Yee

What’s something meaningful you or your partner has done?

My favourite Valentine’s has to be one where my partner, Razlan Rizal, and I were in our first year of university in Melbourne. At the strike of midnight, he got my housemate to let him in the apartment and he surprised me with the only bunch of roses I’ll ever allow him to buy me (because I don’t believe in gifting flowers) and handmade love coupons filled with activities we could do together.

A Message to My Loved One

Happy Valentine’s Day sweetheart! Thank you for buying me roses that one time. Thank you for always buying me separate gifts even though my birthday is exactly a week from Valentine’s Day. I love you.

5. Kookie

What’s something meaningful you or your partner has done?

On Valentine’s Day, he flew all the way from UK to see me for 3 days. He said he did it because he wanted to show me that the distance didn’t matter and he loves me.

6. A & F

What’s something meaningful you or your partner has done?

Do you ‘believe’ in Valentine’s Day? Or are you a skeptic and think that it’s just another way to make consumers spend money on flowers and chocolates?

I am firmly in the latter group. But my fiancée is in the former. So, what happens when Valentine’s Day comes around?

Well, compromise happens. Compromise is the basis of most healthy relationships. Without this vital trait, any relationship would be hard pressed to survive long term.

You see, my fiancée and I are in a long-distance relationship. When I moved from Malaysia to Scotland for work, our future as a couple was very unclear. Fast track a couple of years and she managed to land a job in Switzerland to be nearer to me. That meant we would just be a couple of hours away from each other rather than being halfway across the world.

So, on Valentine’s Day 2019, we compromised. She flew down to see me because she really wanted to celebrate the occasion in person with me. However, she didn’t want to put any pressure on me to celebrate so she refused to remind me that Valentine’s Day was just around the corner.

I did not want to celebrate, but I recognised that she was flying down because she wanted to be with me on an occasion that she viewed as being special. So, I knew I wanted to celebrate it with her as a thank you.

We went to an art museum nearby and had a lovely cappuccino in the café along with a moist piece of cake. It’s a day with many fond memories.

A Message to My Loved One

To my fiancée: You are a gift to the world. Be yourself and trust that everything will work out. Happy Valentine’s Day.

7. P & T

What’s something meaningful you or your partner has done?

He is not a romantic person and would not express his love through words but through actions instead. Since we were in a long distance relationship (I live in Perak while he lives in Selangor), I didn’t harbour any expectations.

On Valentine’s Day 2016, I was working in a bank and was busy attending to customer’s queries when I saw his figure at the banking hall. At that time, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me so I didn’t pay much attention to it.

However, when I was done with a customer, he walked towards me with a bouquet of roses on his left hand and a Pooh soft toy (I’m a die-hard Winnie the Pooh fan) on his right. I was dumbstruck and surprised. Thank god it was almost closing time and there were not many customers left.

After receiving the gift, he waited patiently for me to finish work around 7pm. After having dinner and spending some quality time together, he drove back to Selangor as he needed to work the next day. That was indeed my most memorable Valentine’s Day.

A Message to My Loved One

To T, thank you for all your love towards me for the past 5 years, thank you for your tolerance and whenever we quarrelled, you gave in and will act as though nothing has happened the next day. It was not always a bed of roses for us, but nevertheless, I hope our marriage will last forever and, I LOVE YOU 3000.

From, your love

8. Steph

What’s something meaningful you or your partner has done?

On Valentine’s Day last year, we finally had a reason to dine out at a nice keto restaurant after weeks of having homecooked keto meals. Now that the restaurant is closed indefinitely and only does meal plans, it makes the day we dined out there even more special.

My husband even gave me a deposit receipt from an optical shop as one of my Valentine’s Day gift. This means I could walk into the shop and choose my preferred frame and lens. Although I told him that I like practical gifts, I found his gift absurd. I can imagine him walking into the shop and asked the owner to take his money, write a receipt and someone else will be back. It’s so strange.

A Message to My Loved One

You’re really one of the clumsiest and most forgetful person I have ever met. Every week surely you’ll do or say something to me and I’ll vomit blood. Logic and reasons point towards us being incompatible yet it still feels strangely right. As individuals, we are opposites of each other and incomplete but as a couple, we are whole and complete. However, with that being said, eh come on la you idiot! Get your act together before I run out of blood to vomit! Happy V-day

Find out if love is racist before Valentine’s Day on iwonder

Tackling a rarely discussed dating taboo in the run up to Valentine’s Day comes Is Love Racist? The Dating Game, getting under the skin of the objects of our affection to reveal our hidden biases when it comes to choosing a potential partner.

Sociologist and broadcaster Emma Dabiri takes an in-depth look at racism in Britain through the world of modern dating, unveiling the results of a major survey of online dating habits. Central to the film, a volunteer group of young singletons take part in a series of experiments to discover if there is more than meets the eye going on in the flighty world of modern dating apps.

Discussing some of the findings revealed in the documentary, Emma Dabiri says: “We like to think that our preferences are something that are innate and really personal and individual to each of us. But if that is the case, why is there such an overwhelming preference towards whiteness?”

Using eye-cameras to analyse onlookers’ visual responses to people of different races, a Harvard University association test to reveal subconscious biases, and a number of other psychological experiments, over the course of the documentary the subjects and their observers unpick what’s really going on beneath the hidden rules of attraction and the role society plays in shaping of view of love.

iwonder Head of Content, Alexandra Fox-Hughes, says of the film: “Singletons might think they’re making conscious decisions on the suitability of a potential partner, but what this fascinating film shows is that behind every swipe left or swipe right, there are a number of deeply engrained preconceptions and prejudices influencing our decisions.”

“No matter what people’s personal preference are when it comes to finding the perfect match, understanding more about what’s guiding their choices could be a hugely important step towards finding happiness in the complex worlds of love and dating.”

Airing on February 9 and only in iwonder, viewers can watch Is Love Racist? The Dating Game for free by signing up to the 14-day free trial period, while also gaining access to 1,000+ other acclaimed documentary films and series.
